All these basefags. You know that base is irrelevant right? Entwshisle and Geddy are the only relevant bass players in history. You are not needed. No one cares about the bass player. Even more irrelevant than the drummer.

do you have a grasp on music theory, or do you play from tabs/memory?
want to start playing, but not if it's just miming, and I only ever played piano as a kid for a few months
>>
>>71944200
Yeah, I have a pretty good grasp on theory for bass & guitar. Can definitely write songs, and parts for other people's songs, if that answers your question.
>>
Looking to get dreampop and shoegaze sounds on either a guitar or a bass. What do you recommend(guitar or bass)? I could also use pedal suggestions.

>>71944200
not these guys but I play by ear, I'll finger out the notes till it sounds right, and etch what it sounds like into my head and where it is. Tabs is also a good way to fast forward that process as well as learning chords.
>>
>>71944193
You are not needed or wanted. Pick up a real guitar.
>>
>>71944133
>>71944200
I learn parts I can't pick up myself from tabs, but mostly by ear. Some idea on theory, but not formally taught. I feel comfortable behind a keyboard and can pick up songs pretty easy on keys after playing 20+ years of guitar. There's a surprising good bit of overlap between keys and strings. Knowing a bit of guitar or a bit of piano sets you up for so many other instruments. Even if it is just miming for a while.
>>
Anybody have experience playing with a group in a way different age level/music taste?
I'm 20, and back in high school I used to play bass in a band that did all that old fast dadmetal like Metallica and shit, but haven't really touched my bass since.
Recently, however, I was asked to join a group of people ~40s+ that plays "classic rock" at some bars/clubs most weekends, and has practice once a week.
I'm mostly interested in the pay, plus I just love playing live, and don't mind playing shit I don't like. I'm just wondering if there will be some age dynamic at play that I am currently not considering.

>>
>>71944256
Music can cut across all demographics. So it'll be an issue if you let it, or not an issue if you look past it. Guys hanging out playing music is fun, regardless of age. And if you get a dollar for it too, so much the better.
>>
>>71943116
I want to learn to play guitar, and i'm 30, but it seems kind of childish picking up a guitar at this age right? If I wanted to learn guitar, I should have started when I was a tennager right?
>>

No on all counts. Just get a guitar and be happy. Guitar is a tool, not a lifestyle.

You'll probably be more disciplined and focused than a teenager. You're probably less arrogant.

I've seen a lot of guys (in their 20s) who've played for 10 to 15 years. They've spent that time learning bad technique, having unproductive practice sessions, they've spent 15 years rationalizing why they don't need theory. They learned to sweep pick, but never learned how to build a chord. They learned to tap, but they've got shit time. They can play every AC/DC song, but they can't write anything good.

>>
>>71945497
Oh. I'm a family man too, so I guess that makes sense. Personally I don't use tube amps because I want to be able to play at whatever volume I want with whatever gain I want. Though I gotta say, unless you live in the woods or something most people have that problem. I had that problem even when I lived alone.
>>
>>71945516
Well, I own a recording business and play loud amps at all times of the day or night. MOST people have the volume problem. A lot of amp companies have made low wattage amps for these people. 90 to 150 watt amp people are the kind of people to beat the fuck out of people that complain about noise. I hurt people seriouly weekly.

Kinda.
I took 2 guitar lessons when i was 10 but my family couldn't afford it so i stopped going and didn't own a guitar
Joined band in 7th grade and played saxophone all the way through senior jazz band in high school. Never practiced on my own time because the saxophone just wasn't an interesting instrument by itself imo, but i was still good enough to keep up during class and i enjoyed that
Took a quarter-long guitar class junior year of hs which was basically a blow off class. Because of all the years i was in band i understood how stuff was "supposed" to sound and was pretty good at slowly playing stuff back by ear
Became interested in playing guitar more and got an acoustic for Christmas that year
Started by looking up tabs and chords for wonderwall/creep/house of the rising sun/etc.
Eventually I got bored of that and started noodling around on my own trying to come up with stuff working off melody/harmony things i picked up in band
And I've been doing that everyday for the past 10 years. Tbh playing guitar is like reading a book or playing videogames, something relaxing but challenging and very rewarding i can do in my spare time for hours without getting bored because there's so many possibilities.

if you didn't know hd598s are the same exact headphones as the 555s internally, and the only difference was that they took a piece of foam they taped onto the hd555s that altered the sound
598s have no foam and they jack up the price... pretty gay of them really...

i just love bands like The Oh Hellos, The Audreys, NMH, John Webley, etc.
anyway, i've taken a liking to the sound of the mandolin and they seem relatively cheap too.
how different are they compared to the regular acoustic guitar? can i easily transition from one to the other?
are there any special techniques or weird quirks i need to keep in mind before i get one?

it actually sort of seems easier without a pick, because you don't really have to change strings as quickly. use your thumb as a pivot and play both strings with your thumb but use your middle finger to play the top string. it's hard to explain idk

They're tuned in fifths, you don't play only one finger per fret, you play with your thumb over the neck, there's way more chord voicings.

Also personally I would get one with an adjustable truss rod, just for piece of mind. Like ukulele, a lot don't have that feature.

Carpenter Brut (another synthwave guy) was the closing act for a smaller black metal fest/show. There's also Dance with the Dead which is two guys who play synth and guitar. Perturbator's ask.fm (https://ask.fm/Perturbatormusic) has some good stuff about him on it although there are some shitposts too. There's also a few interviews with him where he talks about his musical background. There's a large overlap between people who like synthwave and metal.

Anyone got a Rickenbacker 4001 bass? Is the hype around it real? Will I lose some of my thickness in tone if I switch to a Ric from a P bass?
>>
>>71953251
Hype? M8, everyone knows they're shitty basses. The reason Rickenbacker is so protective over copy write is that anybody could do it way cheaper. Ricks have flat, small frets, bridges that break strings, no hum cancelling, a dual truss rod, a muting system that'll fall apart in months, and button top pickups that have a narrow magnetic field(lose volume while bending)

The redeeming factors of a Rickenbacker, to me, are the styling, the pickup placement, and the ceramic magnets. If you want to emulate the rick sound, put a pickup where the rick bridge ought to be (on a jazz bass, this is between the two pickups). The pickup should have oversized pole pieces for a strong, focused sound without losing volume when bending, and a ceramic pickup. Depending on what year of Rickenbacker you favor, you may opt for a low output pickup as well.

Some music man stingrays have ceramic pickups, and most sterling basses do. Tapping the front coil of these pups will get remarkably close to a Rickenbacker sound, and running the coils in parallel will get in the ballpark while being him cancelling. You can also add one of these pickups to your bass with a bit of hard work.

If you want to get in the ballpark without hard work, just put a ceramic pickup in your P-bass or in the neck pickup of your jazz. I'm not sure what's on the market these days but if you can find one with pole pieces that focus the magnetic field well that's a plus.
>>
>>71953549
Thank you.

Flatter than flatwounds. Try ground-wounds, aka halfrounds, if you're worried about your fretboard. Anyways, It's a short scale, so you have to expect less harmonic content. The nice thing about that is that you can crank the volume up more in a mix without getting in the way. They sound boring by themselves though. I think short scales can be really nice, but I wouldn't get one unless I was in a band.

So /gg/, I just went to the guitar store today, tried out a random inexpensive acoustic, and I realized I'm not actually as shit as I thought, it's my fucking piece of shit $150 high action uncomfortable classical guitar that's causing me all this trouble. The acoustic had a thin neck (very nice in my large hands, could do thumb-over easily), fret inlays, nice sounding strings, and was so much easier to play overall. Pressing the strings down took literally no effort, string muting was easy, it was louder, no buzzing, I could play much faster. I could also access the higher frets comfortably, I can't even do a 10th fret E-shape D chord on my current guitar.

Man, I'm regretting purchasing this worthless piece of shit guitar so much right now, I can't even get a new one for a few months, my parents are in a tough situation financially and I don't want to burden them. My fingers are strong as fuck, but I don't know if I need any more strength at this point. Fuck I feel so bad

I've been looking at getting some kind of Lo-fi pedal to jam with. Tape echo, slapback, vinyl sim, literal potato, whatever. I can get there using multiple pedals and my trem but I'd like to make it easier so I can be more creative.

>everything that fits this bill is either fucking expensive as hell or not very good

I can feel the memes overtaking me as I've narrowed it down to the El Capistan and Deco from Strymon. Is there an option I'm missing? I don't like to get lots of/expensive pedals so I'd like to avoid it if possible. I don't want a reverb and I don't need some mega super pedal like the Timeline or H9. No space echo pls.

I'm leaning towards the El Capistan right now. Deco has too much Flange/Chorus that I won't use.

Also Gibson should keep that as a permanent model in their lineup. I don't particularly like Gibson but I would definitely buy one of those. Great specs + I'm a shameless bucketbot.

yeah, honestly
getting a high end modeling pedal to achieve a rudimentary sound is about as retarded as buying a relic guitar, but it's your fucking money to waste
go ahead and buy a strymon pedal or an h9 anytime really, they're very capable pieces of gear

Who are some good guitar players/bands that you would consider to not just be technically proficient but also to have a unique style?
Trying to play rhythm guitar for a band but honestly I just sound kind of generic so far. I'm not expecting to be a fucking virtuoso player my first show but I at least want to try and do something a little different

What? That's the opposite of what I've been saying. Why don't you read this since you must have stopped reading my post as soon as you saw the words Lo-fi and Strymon.

>I don't like to get lots of/expensive pedals so I'd like to avoid it if possible. I don't want a reverb and I don't need some mega super pedal like the Timeline or H9.

Seriously I don't get it. My only issue with you is that you haven't addressed anything I've actually said, you're attacking some character that isn't me. If I wanted to sound like shit as you allege I'd grab an MXR 10 band EQ and set it up to sound like AM radio. Obviously that's not what I'm going for, so why pretend like it is?

I will not reply to you again.

Engineer actually. I like to solve problems and guitars are like tools to me...potential solutions to a problem. Use them for different styles and different songs in different tunings...set them up with specific string combinations, etc. and see what I can do with them.

Don't mean to overshare the collection. Just having fun with /mu. Some people like to see gear, others get shitty about it. It's fun to read the different responses.

What a great engineer, he doesn't know enough about guitars to know that a Gibson is a waste of money. I'm not a real engineer, just a software dev, but I managed to figure that one out.
