It's kind of gay but not super important for most things.

You should be able to play this shape, anyway.

If you play it as a power chord, i.e. without the B string note, you don't get to hear the major third interval which lets you know the chord is major.
>>
>>71921477

Depends on the amp. You can crank the presence on some. If your amp has a bright cap, turning the volume down gets you in there.

Marshalls live on bass cut with mid and treble boosted.

play scales for half an hour, get a ten minutes rest, and play again and again until you feel your fingers don't want to move anymore. You need hours and hours of practising.
As Robert Fripp would say, it's all about discipline.

Also, a year of playing guitar it's nothing. It's a very short time, and there's quite a lot you need to learn. Don't rush it nor feel anxious about it. As long as you practice, sooner or later, you will certainly improve.

Normally the pulled up position opens the switch on the backside of the pot. So just like you've described.

Alternatively you can use any electrical switch for this. Or on like a les paul for example, you can move both pickups to one tone control and use the freed pot to spin one of the pickups between single and humbucker.

Does /gg/ tend to copy their favourite guitarists/artists when it comes to the gear they buy?

I definitely do, I think I might rely on the artists trust on certain brands quite a lot. For example, just bought a cheap Arion Stereo Phaser because that's what TK from Ling Tosite Sigure uses. Became interested in teles after Greenwood and early Page. And there are a ton of other examples, so I can definitely say I do.

something along the lines like

Wren and Cuff Triā€‘Pie '70
Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B

which one stands out to you or you know of any else like a DIY set?

Not that other guy, but it's hard to go wrong with the Wren and Cuff TFR, or the Grey Stache, but I'll also throw in a bid that the Stomp Under Foot Rhinosaur and DOD Carcosa can pull off classic Russian (black and green) muff tones plus some. That, and the Carcosa is only $100 at ProGuitarShop.

I have a question, im trying to learn a solo from a jazz standard. I already know what i think are all or at least most of the scales, major and minor chords and arpegios and 7maj 7 m7 and m7b5 arpegios and chords.
But when i got to learning the solo i noticed there are also 7b9, mi9, 7b9#5 7b5

Do i also have to learn those new figures by heart? i really want to understand at least the figures of what im playing but seems like a lot of information

any other tips on theoretical knowledge i should know to play at least basic jazz?

Im an intermediate player but i would like to get into virtuoso old school classic heavy metal.

Like, marty friedman for example, i find that i understand most of it, i know what scales they're using, what tehcniques theyre playing, my only setback is speed.

How to improve speed focused on metal, is there a good proven guide? i don't care if it takes years to master, but i don't want to waste time on excersises that get me nowehere. I tried just grabbing the songs i want and triyng to slowly up the tempo with a metronome, but i've played the same shit montsh without progressing even a single bpm, it feels like it doesnt do anything.

So any advice or preferably good guides or books to slowly but surely build speed for techniques used in heavy metal?
>>

I don't know my first instinct was to somehow try to use troll logice to claim you weren't right but i feel im to old to do that even over the internet. so i just say the truth, you're right, it was wrong for me to describe jazz soloing as running over the scale while focusing on the chords while the truth is that it's a technique that's incredibly useful in any kind of music

>>71926866

>>
>>71926866
Yes, the pick will have less give in your fingers if you hold it tightly, and the effect is more exaggerated with thick picks since thin picks will still have a lot of give even with a tight grip. This is partly why a lot of people like thick picks better, you can still get a pretty good loose sound on chords if you loosen your grip and then get a sharp aggressive attack when you grip hard. More versatility than thin picks.

Also while picking strength and grip strength are different, they most often work together - strong grip with strong strums and loose grip with soft strums
>>
>>71926866
yes, it can change your attack in particular
>>
>>71926980
while all this is technically true, the sound from the pick is the sum of its parts and all of that is affected by any number of other things in your picking technique and the pick you're using

btw if you're not a world class player and you're worried about the sound your pick is making you're way overthinking things.

I don't actually know if this is what everyone else calls spider exercises but I was talking about this stuff:

https://pastebin.com/gdCYr7Se

Essentially, chromatic exercises up and down the neck and strings.

Don't do these for more than 2 hours at a time. Take a break, then maybe do one or two more of these sessions. Repeat a few times a week at least.

You can also do hammer-on/pull-off exercises with your left hand, doing trills between ring/pinky, middle/ring, middle/pinky etc. again on all strings and up and down the fretboard.
>>

Sorry but if you want to git gud, you have to do it. Try to look at it not as exercises or music, but as a sporting competition.

I forgot to say, you should play these with a metronome. Start slow, note down how fast you can do them cleanly and increase speed every 2 sessions or so until you can't go up. Then go down again. Playing cleanly is imperative, even if it means you can only do it at like 30 bpm.
Also the 1-2, 2-1, 1-2-3 and 3-2-1 exercises should be done with any combination of fingers, not just index/middle/ring. So do the 1-2 thing with ring and pinky as well.
>>
>>71929372

Don't get me wrong, I understand that it's kind of a chore and it's annoying but trust me, if you keep at it and maybe sacrifice an hour of shitposting twice or three times a week you'll feel like a goddamn guitar god when it's time to solo.
>>
what's the point of having a pickup hotter than the tone zone, really
don't they just get uncontrollable at some point

Don't come crying to me when you can't figure out how to play solo xyz because it's too fast and your fingers don't do what you want them to.

You tell me, I'm not the one wanting to get into virtuoso metal. Most stuff by Paul Gilbert qualifies I guess.

That solo doesn't have big stretches and if you do want to play solos that require them just get a short scale guitar. In any case, having dextrous fingers is never a bad thing. Showing off tricks to girls is always fun, if you catch my drift.

For all 7 chords that have a b5, #5, b9, or #9, or any combination thereof, use the Altered Scale based on the root of the chord, or alternatively, play the Melodic Minor Scale rooted on the b9 of the chord.

So on A7#5, for example, play A Altered, or Bb Melodic Minor (It's the same thing, basically. A Altered is just the 7th mode of Bb Melodic Minor)

This isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's a good way to start out, I think.
