so, to get something useful out of this
when i can use a diminushed chord to go up one step in chords? like the interval on iii to vi or vi to v

You can use diminished chords resolving to the chord a semitone higher the same way you can use secondary dominants to go to the chord that's a fourth higher/fifth lower.

Where your capo is has nothing to do with in what key you play. It only affects chord voicings that use open strings.

Yes i fucking know that
Why he would put a capo in the second fret to play in A if it would just prevent him from playing an open a and make it worse

Why do you hate Yngwie? He's a good songwriter, and at his prime he was doing things musically that few others were.

Probably no because in other songs he does chords with root note included
Like on this one for example (on the verses)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViDRDE8ViFg
>>
>>71901843

The only reasonable thing he did was the concert with the Japanese Orchestra. I use to think he was the only good fast guitarist, but I realized how bland his writing is when I listened to his stuff without watching him. His video performances are alright, but overall I just don't like his following. Maybe part of it is because I was friends with a guy in highschool, named after a stratocastor, who to this day worships the guy. Kid could shred like nobodies business, even teaches now and has a cult following on facebook, but the kid ONLY shreds. The kid can sweep all 7 modes faster than he can unzip his pants but he has zero emotion. When his dad was playing for me and my friend in his studio, he was playing some real heart bound jazz fusion/blues stuff, and the kid interrupts him and asks him to do a sweep he did when he played with Chris impeliteri. Long story short it made me really begin to hate shredders, and Yngwie just happens to be the one I see more and more people worship but neglect someone like David Gilmour or Townes who tied playing with composition like bread and butter.

Estimates on most of these vary wildly - the amp in particular; have seen these go for as low as £300 but as high as £650

Maybe it's because he doesn't need to play this voicing and he knows open string vocabulary in G that uses open strings, that he wants to play in this song.

Thanks, actually this is the first time someone compliments my tone, since I only use a cheap interface and Bias FX.
About the rhythm, I used the only guitar that's not made for metal I have, which is a Les Paul copy with shitty chinese pickups so that's probably why it sounds like that. Gonna get an Alnico II Pro set for it when I get money.

Either way I'll try to fix it and if not, the next song will be better; no matter how much experience you have, there is always room for improvement.

So, I bought a used guitar and the first string broke. I went to buy a new set of strings, and the first string gauge was 0.9. But the thing is that I didn't know what gauge the guitar used. So I just bought the 0.9 gauge, put it, and now the string looks like this in the guitar's neck. Did I buy the wrong gauge, and if I did, is it dangerous to my guitar?

Does anyone else feel like they don't really own their guitar until they've taken it apart piece by piece and put it back together?

The process of inspecting and cleaning each part; making sure the action, intonation, and trem is set up just right; and making sure all of the electronics and soldering connections are good. That whole process makes the guitar into YOUR guitar. Until then it's just a guitar that happens to be in your possesion.

I love those cuts on your arm when the string snaps! But honestly just don't tune up to E# or F and you shouldn't have a problem. For future references, just buy a new set of strings in most bases if it's a new used and one of the strings breaks, because that probably means the rest will to because they don't put fresh strings on their inventory

Been there brother, often am there. I would say compacting your setup is actually for the best. Keeping things in order is a real good thing for depression. You can always buy used gear later for the same amount you sell this stuff for.

Make sure to buy yourself a slide if you're going all acoustic. You can have a lot of fun with one guitar if you make the most of it. Trying different tunings, even getting a spider capo can really keep you from getting disgruntled over lack of electric doo-dads.

That reminds me, time to take my pill. Bottom's up, this one's for you!

After all those years i still dont feel like my guitars are mine
>>
>>71903922
Oh totally I agree. I only have a "special bond" with one guitar and I haven't modified it at all.

I'm just saying that once you get home, restring the thing and give it an extensive, personal setup, the guitar feels more like home. This includes changing pots, caps, and switches if needed. I like knowing exactly what's in it and how it's wired too. THAT's the autistic part I guess.

I've always been pretty uncomfortable on random guitars so I guess it's more pronounced for me as well. I don't like the way most guitars are setup.
>>
>>71903831
to me it was the other way round

like >>71903910

guitar was my only fun and i dont have money anymore to buy strings, i'm restricted to the ones my siblings give me
so i can't play all day anymore cause my hands sweat as hell
so i just noodle on the acoustic, and keep the electrics only for recording and playin with my bands
>>
>>71904094
When I first got a nice guitar, I felt that I didn't "deserve" it. Like I wasn't good enough to have it, "who was I fooling?" That feeling goes away in time. I've bought plenty of guitars that I thought were perfect for me, but they weren't. So I kept trying new things and selling what didn't feel right.

As you get better you'll find that guitar that fits like a glove. You'll pick it up in a store and go "Holy shit". THAT will be your guitar.

Oh, most guitars are setup like shit. I played with a guy once who had some random Ibanez RG setup at a local shop. The thing's tremolo was pointed almost completely forward by default. As in, you couldn't even pull it forward to make the strings go loose.

Guy had no clue, and he paid someone to do this to his guitar. Obviously an extreme case, but most people's shit is buzzing, or a pickup isn't grounded properly (I'm guilty of this), loose jack, etc.

>>71904458
Honestly, this is why I generally don't bother playing instruments in a store. They usually sound and play crappy due to pickup height and mystery strings. I just make sure it fits all the specs and dimensions I'm looking for, including pickup specs, and listen to various demos online of what it sounds like actually set up right. Then when I buy it I just assume I need to do a set up, and depending on price point assume I need to level frets. I use a site with a good return policy. Of course, if I was getting a headless or something particularly unwieldy I'd probably go try one out, but I haven't been in that situation yet.

This has led me to resell a few instruments, and to return several, but all in all it's just way cheaper and easier for me then to search local inventory. It's just so much easier to get ridiculously specific and picky on the specs, features, and colors you want. I just don't feel like covering a local shop's margin. Maybe if I found one that did good setups on what they received, or let you mess with pickup height I'd feel differently.

For someone who doesn't want to learn about guitar electronics, construction, and setup, I can see why you'd go in to a store instead. Personally I enjoy a bit of research.
>>
>>71904660
I've always wondered, why do demo guitars tend to have fucked up pickup heights?
>>
>>71904686
I usually find them too low, I assume it's to save time on the line and to prevent poorly set up guitars from having pickups touch the strings. Just like high nuts, it's a lot harder to notice poor action or slightly uneven frets than it is to notice fret buzz.

People in a guitar shop will look at you like you're crazy if you start checking frets with a credit card, goes to show the way people are expected to shop there.
>>
>>71904660
This is what I do. If I'm getting something with a feature I'm unfamiliar with, I'll go try it out in a store or try out a guitar with that same feature. I ignore everything except that one thing I need to know.

Once "tried out" a guitar by demoing 4 different guitars that had parts like the one I actually wanted. One had the same neck, one had similar pickups, one had the same body, etc. Got it in the mail and it was fucking perfect. Set it up and it's like I had something custom made.

To be fair, you have to know what you want/like/need in order to do it this way.

Which mustang? Some of them are quite a good power amp/speaker setup due to its light weight. So rather than getting a lunchbox which includes a power section, you can get a nice pre or even a couple preamps that you like the sound of, and just leave them on top of your amp. Or, if you can swing it, an amp sim. With the mustang you may have to tweak EQ a bit after the ore or sim, so it may be worth it to get a cheap multi-band to leave on so you don't have to compensate on the pedals and amp, which can be annoying.

It's not as simple as getting a more transparent keyboard amp, but it is generally cheaper and lighter, considering you don't need the range of a keyboard amp for guitar.

Personally, since I play bass and guitar, I use a keyboard amp and amp sims. This let's me have just one amp for bass, electric guitar, and acoustic. But once again, if you are like most and just want a electric guitar setup, the mustang is a good bet, whether you want a preamp or sims.

What genre? I'd suggest the blues jr if you rely on pedals for your tone if you like distortion get the BB or Tweaker. I highly recommend the Tweaker the clean channel is really good and the distortion is top notch and even better with a OD pedal like and OCD

Bassbreaker and Tweaker are great practice/gigging amps, the Blues Jr. I would recommend for strict practice or small/solo gigs and recording. I've had good experiences with Egnater and the Blues Jr. in general, but I've never used as Bassbreaker personally so I can't vouch for it beyond what I've seen on YouTube videos.

I'm looking to start playing guitar and an uncle of mine said he could help me out (he has something of a studio in his basement and a bunch of guitars he's collected over the years). I asked him if he had any good starter guitars and he pulled out two of them, a Peavey Raptor EXP and a Squier Jaguar (I think it's a Jaguar, it might have been Jazzmaster). He said both would work as starters but I could only pick one. Which should I be looking to pick? I've looked up stuff about both but what determines which one is "better" I guess?

Why does my G string CONSTANTLY detune? I can't remember when it started. It mightve always been like this. But my g string constantly detunes while I play, especially if use my vibrato. I feel like I'm tuning it every few minutes while playing.

I think I usually use ernie balls, around 10 gauge. With my last pack of strings, I realized that the string was coming unwound at the bridge. I went to the music shop and told them about my problem and they gave me a pack of curt mangans, but the problem is still happening.

Is it something with the way the guitar is set up? Am I just unlucky with strings?

This is the most frustrating thing ever
>>
>>71908501
G string is always the most likely to go out if tune. I would make sure there's no binding at the nut or bridge. If you have a string tree, try taking the G string out from under it. Beyond that, stop using Ernie ballsacks. Daddario are fairly cheap and much better. But use whatever you find that you like, I don't have a large depth of experience here.

Teles are the primordial electric geetar. If you can't get it DONE with a Tele, you simply can't play.

unless you're one of those 8 string Djent jackoffs. then you probably can't do it with a Tele. and you probably ain't gonna be doing it with any CHICKS either, because no females come to your shows or listen to your music.

this only happens on electric guitars because when the modern guitar was 'invented' the g string was a much heavier gauge, but then bending and rock music became popular and strings got lighter so now the thickness of the G string no longer matches the geometry of the instrument. i play 11s for this reason

the last guitar i bought had a banana neck and the strap buttons were missing. i actually pointed this out to the seller, who told me that he didnt know what a strap lock was. i opened a dispute with ebay and a month later they refunded my money.

i sold it to a local shop for 1/3 of the price i was refunded for it, so i made money. buying guitars online is great!

Too much hassle, the headstock will just fall off anyway.

Why does everyone talk shit about basswood bodies?

mine went fine
though the fretboard was a bit warped and it still buzzes even after refretting it

my basswood strat sounds like shit
had to put shitty overwound pickups for it to sound minimally decent

Seconded for ebay. Got my Hagstrom on there from a canadian music shop. For international shipping I was pleasantly surprised at how perfect the condition was.
>>
>>71917035
What about a basswood bass though?
I can see the guitar tone being affected when its, well, a normal guitar. But in a bass's case I hardly seem to notice the difference.
I was told that ash for example, has a more "midboosted" tone.

so, does basswood affect the tone that much? why did so many 80s players prefer basswood then?

Any recommendations for an overdrive for dirty clean tones? I have been using my zvex distortion's low gain channel for this, but I would like to try something different. I had the voodoo lab sparkle drive in mind.

Any thoughts?

Way too many guitarists have fallen for the toanwood meme and view basswood as a cheap shitty wood, even though Ernie Ball's high-end guitars use them

Basswood is inexpensive and lightweight but soft and thus prone to damage

they use humbuckers so they can get away with it

the tune o matic bridge is literally the last thing i would consider criticizing about gibson, the design has been copied over and over again even by fender
>>

>>71918711
the strings rest oh the sharp edges are you blind
the only time I've ever seen strings break at the bridge was on a ToM

single coils sound brighter but not exactly thin and dead sounding as my strat was
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qxrns-N9RY
>>
>>71918795
it's not the guitar's fault that you set it up improperly and the strings are touching the back of the bridge

this is like bitching that the string height is out of wack on a fender bridge because you cranked them too high

>>71918795
>the sharp edges
If the saddles are sharp I guess you're doing something wrong.

>Been playing with modeling amps for years because I'm a poor student who lives in an apartment
>Hooked up my headphones to my PC and my guitar to my audio interface
>This meant that I always had some amount of latency when playing because I had to use AISO drivers to get rid of the latency but using the AISO4ALL drivers meant that I only got sound from one source and using the AISO driver from my interface obviously wouldn't output any sound since I had my headphones connected to my PC
>Just now realized that I can just set my audio interface as the main audio device in Windows and connect my headphones to that and get both the sound from Windows and the sound from my DAW output to my headphones without latency
Guys, I think I legitimately have Downs syndrome. I've been playing guitar with noticeable latency for literally years and years. Jesus fuck, I wonder how much the development of my skills have been held back by this

Thanks for reading my blog

Unfasten the locking nut, set the fine tuners about halfway out so you have room to adjust them either way, jam a piece of dowel under the bridge to make it level with the rest of the guitar. Tune up and play with the spring tension until it's both in tune and level. Lock the nut and make adjustments to fine tuners if necessary.

Something like that. It's been years since I messed with a guitar with a Floyd so maybe I'm forgetting something.
