It's the 2nd of October

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Also since the topic came up last thread I'm gonna ask who would be up for taking part in listenalongs again.

For those who don't know what they are, basically, everybody who wants to participate gets put on a list and then said list is sorted randomly.
Then, every weekend the first person on the list picks an album and everybody else listens to it, and gives their thoughts on it.

finally something that can hold a candle to expensive shit. the grooves are a little different sounding here, which is good because a lot of his stuff can sound wayyy too similar which kinda turns me off from him. Trouble Sleep was amazing, easily in his top 3 songs. it has a much slower tempo than the usual Fela, which makes for a very unique experience. You definitely need to hear this. The closer, Go Slow, is pretty mediocre though, and doesn't live up to the first three tracks.

seeing how much everyone here loves jim's pop stuff and to a lesser extent a lot of the other records they put out, Drag City is probably a big one

Tribo Massahi - Estrelando Embaixador
>Batucada, African Folk

I don’t even recognize 2/3 of the RYM tags and I sure haven’t heard much African folk music. No idea what I was expecting going into this, aside from a connection to Samba.

From the get go, this was chaotic. Lots of polyrhythmic percussion, samba-y vocals and a lot of call-and-response vocals. There’s even like a chorus of children that chants along with most of the tracks, which is cool. The drums are noticeably mixed louder than the rest of the music though. And this is coming from someone who usually doesn’t notice shit like this. The bass on cuts like “Harmatan” blares in the foreground as well, with vocals sitting in the background, obscured by a lot of echo. It was almost annoying to have the singing so far in the back but it gave the album a uniquely dark feel. Sounded like this was recorded in a tunnel or around a campfire or something.

Musically, this is tight. The rhythm was maybe a bit over-emphasized but a lot of the music I like kind of leans that way anyway. The drumming is tight and complex, with lots of bongos and hand percussion going on. It’s almost hectic, with the groups of drums just bouncing around and joining together into a huge wall of percussion.

Though the rhythm section is really impressive, the rest of the instrumentation is fairly simple. There’s a little flute on the opener, some funk guitar riffs throughout and - not much else. As a result, it feels vaguely afrobeat-y but that doesn’t quite capture it. On each transition, there’s also a little airplane sample that kind of breezes by and reminds you that you’re going onto the next track. Despite these separate tracks, the album is essentially two big jam sessions.

The energy on here is awesome. I like the intense drumming, cool vocals and little hints of funk instrumentation. As a whole, it’s a really unique listen, I’m not sure how to put most of it into words. Great.

Also, yeah it's definitely worth a read. I read it about 3 or 4 years ago when I was heavy into science so maybe I'm biased but I thought super entertaining. Probably one of my favorite books, alongside Book of Basketball (lol). It goes into a lot of the same themes as Jurassic Park/Michael Crichton books, with the whole "should we mess with genetics?" conversation. It's just a cool story in general, I'd recommend it

Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire
>Neo Psychedelia, Space Rock

I’m not quite sure what changed since Perfect Prescription but I didn’t get much out of this release. There’s less of an epic atmosphere and I think these songs suffer a lot as a result. The guitar and synths drone on in psychedelic fashion as usual - they just feel boring. The 11 minute “Suicide” is basically a drone track, with weaving guitars and repetitive drums just splashing around in the background. It’s maybe the most epic moment of the album but it still falls flat in my mind, despite some cool little moments of distortion. The closer “Lord Can You Hear Me?” is pretty solid though, with an old-school doo-wop kind of guitar passage and some earnest, religious (as you’d imagine) lyrics. It’s very heartfelt and emotional as a result and I’m quite glad I checked out the album for that one track. The rest of the album, however, just blends together in a mush of average neo-psych.

Maybe this will grow on me though, cause I really loved Perfect Prescription.

TIEBREAKER:

Woolite recs:

My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realize (1988)
>Shoegaze, noise pop, dream pop
The first two tracks (the noisier ones), were fantastic and probably the noisiest thing by MBV I've heard. The following three tracks were decent but forgettable; the dreamier sound of those three songs was executed much better on Loveless in my opinion.
7

Jangle&Bojangle recs:

Tim Buckley - The Peel Sessions (1991)
>Singer/songwriter, psychedelic folk
It's Tim Buckley in his prime. That's hard to beat. "Hallucinations/Troubador" is the obvious standout. Although the other tracks don't stand out too much compared to the studio versions, it's still Tim Buckley and his performance is still top-notch.

Kayo Dot - Coyote (2010)
>experimental rock, avant-prog

I'm kinda shocked by the very middling reaction that this got from fans of the band. I'm not a fan of Kayo Dot or Toby Driver that much at all, but I find this pretty much on par with Choirs of the Eye. I appreciate how it pretty much sheds the band's metal influence, taking on a sound much more indebted to avant-prog and jazz than anything else. It's quite a neutered take on these genres, because the arrangements are pretty simple and very awkwardly composed, but it's an interesting direction for the band and all the performances are great. I like the jazz sound more than the avant-prog sound, it's a very spacey, avant-garde take on jazz that sounds original without every straying too far from the confines of the genre. I liked this more than I thought I would, but I'm still not a big fan.

2.5-

Sparklehorse - It's a Wonderful Life (2001)
>indie rock, indie pop

Wow, the opener is absolutely beautifiul. Glockenspiel usage always kills me, and the way that intrinsically melancholic instrument pairs with Linkous' heartbreakingly small and defeated vocals makes for one of the best album openers I've heard in a while. "Gold Day" keeps up this excellence, as do most of the next five or so tracks, but the album takes a bit of a dive right with "Dog Door". "Dog Door" itself is the album's worst track, a misled attempt to mine the sounds of electro-industrial and trip hop, and the remaining tracks on the album can't quite reach the same level of quality as the whole first half. It's still very good, but not on the same level. That being said, if the last five tracks were that new Weezer song on repeat I'd still love this album because of the strength of it's first seven tracks, so I can't complain too much.

Jeff Mills - Live At the Liquid Room, Tokyo
>Detroit Techno

Not really a big fan of dance music in general but this is pretty cool. It’s exactly what you think of when you hear the term “techno”, with the drum breaks just slapping and the bass pounding hard as ever. It’s all hectic and fast as hell, with all these samples just thrown in for the hell of it. There’s stretches where it’s just pure straight up techno, with mostly drum breaks dominating the mix. But there’s also these period where Mills shows off his skills as a DJ, crafting these cool little collages of samples. There’s also these wavy synths, lots of crossfade and pounding, African-sounding drums that pop up from time to time. And a little tropical influence on track 2, which is just the coolest. Never thought this combinations of sounds would be so entertaining - but it certainly is. From the little Detroit techno I’ve heard, this sampling is the main feature of the music that makes it so unique.

It’s a bit heavy, to the point of it feeling exhausting by the end. I wish I knew more about this music so I could write a better review… But it’s a pretty cool little mix, fairly enjoyable stuff.

Sly & The Family Stone - Small Talk
>Soul, Funk

Just outside of Sly’s fantastic trilogy of Stand/Riot/Fresh, this feels remarkably average. All of the elements which made Sly’s music so entertaining and original seem to still be here. But they’re all toned down and mellowed out in the worst way possible. Fresh at least had a cohesive atmosphere I loved and some decent standouts - this just has “Can’t Strain My Brain” and “Loose Booty” wedged between some poor to mediocre cuts. The standouts aren’t even too entertaining either, with generic soul riffs, meh guitar and much less energy than usual. Sly’s managed to pull off both mellow and upbeat but this just feels weak and lifeless aside from those two tracks. He’s definitely running out of ideas by this stage of his career and he’s kind of stuck in a rut, especially as far as songwriting goes. There’s not enough energy to make this fun and too much orchestration to make this cool. It’s not offensively bad, it’s simply mediocre.

Postin' some mini-reviews to give me a good excuse to not study for my math final.

>Oneohtrix Point Never - Rifts
FUCK yeah. A two-and-a-half hour chiptune/ambient album sounds like a fucking pain to sit through, but I was legit astral projecting through a majority of this. This guy has a real fucking knack for finding satisfying electronic timbres in a way I don't think many other electronic musicians can compare. Unreal, tangible atmosphere and OPN's best work by far. For sure not gonna be everyone's thing, but I think everyone here would get something out of it.
9

>Songs: Ohia - The Lioness
I hope to god there's more Jason Molina stuff in some vault somewhere, because this guy can't help to make some of the most impactful, melancholic music. The way he incorporates pacing into what are essentially very simple songs play with my heartstrings in a really peculiar way. No reason not to hear this if you've enjoyed this guys other projects, as this is certainly one of his bests.
8

>Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons
With tags like this, I expected this to be a half-baked Slowdive, which is already a half-baked shoegaze band. So that would make this...one quarter-baked? However, this surpasses every other "indiegaze" album I've ever heard holy christ. There's some dumber in-between moments, sure, but the noiser moments fused with pop tendencies remind me a bit of Boces, and that's not a compliment I'd had out easy.
7

>Vladimir Sofronitsky - Scriabin Recital
I probably should've enjoyed this more than I did but I really didn't. I caught a glimpse of some of the more ethereal and floaty moments by laying back and letting myself get lost in this world, but the effect wore off pretty quickly. Satisfying for sure, but not infectious to the degree I'd hoped for. Maybe one day I'll find more time to appreciate it, but that's just how I feel for now.

>Кaзмa-Кaзмa - Пляcки тpyбaдypoв
There's a lot of amazing, weird shit here, but I think the thing that prevents me form LOVING this is the recording quality. Sometimes this slav post-punk thing bodes really well with the lo-fi elements, but I think it really hurts this album, especially with all the fantastic fusion of neo-classical/denser instrumental moments. These highs would be SO much more effective if it didn't sound so damn compressed. Maybe the shottier recording/production will bode better with some, and the songs themselves are usually great, but I think that element is gonna keep me from revisiting this soon.

>Eyehategod - Take As Needed for Pain
Kicks so much ass hell yes. Was headbanging to a good chunk of this shit and I couldn't help it. The first five tracks are all incredible. Too bad right after there's a seven minute dumbass track of pure bullshit. Every track preceding that one is worse than the last, and this album takes a dive quick. What's there at the beginning is certainly awesome, but so much here sucks either comparatively, or just in general.
6

>The Magnetic Fields - 50 Song Memoir
Did a pretty lengthy write-up last thread, but basically, this has some of the best music I've heard this year. Stephin Merritt in many ways is still one of the best modern songwriters, but this album is super bloated. No reason I'd see to listen to this entire thing unless you loved the shit out of 69 Love Songs and need more.

>Kan Gao - To the Moon Original Soundtrack
Kinda torn on this. It has a lot of really emotional, sweet, well-composed moments, but then is almost always interrupted by weird, usually ill-fitting video game FL Studio cliches. I much preferred the songs that were either obviously fitted for video game background noise (usually the chiptunier stuff) or the moments that were classical imitations, but the combination of both often left a bad taste in my mouth. Could see some people REALLY loving this or thinking it was the worst thing ever, but I'm definitely in the middle of both.
6

>Beat Konducta - Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite
Not every song hits as much as I thought it would, but the highs here are very apparent. Uses a lot of elements from Dilla's Donuts, but rarely reaches the level of the source material. The final track, "Sacrifice", and "The Mystery" are in particularly great, but most feels like less dense or interesting Dilla. Mad Lib's best solo output for sure, but still nothing really that special.
6

Dio - Holy Diver
Lolol why do I like this so much? I thought it'd be a pretty easy butt-metal pan, but I liked a lot of what I heard here. "Holy Diver", "Stand Up and Shout", and "Don't Talk to Strangers" were legit bangers. "Rainbow in the Dark" seems to be one of the more liked tracks here, but the synths on that track and some others here really don't vibe with me much. There's a lot of similar dated-production/instrumentation moments, and a lot of this feels like a half-assed Sabbath impression, but doesn't any metal worth giving a shit about?
6

>Swell Maps - A Trip to Marineville
I didn't really think Jane From Occupied Europe was anything special, but this was even more bland. I preferred almost every song on the 7" single that was included with this than on the actual LP. The tones present here are nice, but I found nothing really to enjoy from the substance of most of the songs.

>Iglooghost - Little Grids
Iglooghost has for sure made some of the better OI FOKIN WONKY M9 albums I've heard, but this was my least favorite release by the guy. The opening track was pretty good, but nothing I'd write home about, then almost every following track was significantly worse. Maybe worth checking out if UK Bass/str8 wonk is your thing, but it's only slightly better than most for me.

>Mad Lib's best solo output for sure

Hmmm, I think he has some other solo output that's better. Dil Cosby is pretty solid for a traditional beat tape but he has much better stuff in the Medicine Show series. Black Soul and Shades of Blue are probably better imo. And Brain Wreck Show is the wildest record he made by far, I think it deserves a spot up there as well.
>>
>>71653668

The actual production of the thing is probably fine, it has a major Soviet producer behind it. It's just that you can only find it as a shoddily ripped 192 bootleg of a cassette only sold during live shows. Nobody is really certain what the actual cover even is, it's one of the entries in the Soviet rock book where no art is provided. I'd honestly pay really good money for an original copy in good shape or a vinyl/CD/lossless rerelease; it's one of my favorite albums ever.

Their sophomore album has a much less explosive sound, so it sounds mostly fine. Only problems are that the excellent flautist quit the band to start a mediocre industrial rock band (which still goes on today, though now it's a shitty electropop group that Transgod would probably like following Ukraine becoming obsessed with trashy electronic pop at the turn of the century) and that it's not half as fun. But if you liked the renaissance/art rock hybrid medieval parts, it's definitely worth hearing. Their third album is minimalism with a strong medieval influence, it's weird but still good.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! (2012)
>post-rock

Nowhere near as good as FA∞ or LYSF. It's got it's moments, the strengths of the album lying almost completely in its two longest tracks. These tracks are shockingly heavy for Godspeed, but not in the "epic" kind of heavy the band's sound usually falls under. It's nearly metallic in how distorted the guitars are and how noisy it gets. It's a damn cool sound, and it packs a major punch, but it seems a bit hollow. The build-ups and crescendoes don't seem as deliberate or well thought-out as they do on the band's previous works, the tracks never get any chance to breathe. The two shorter drone tracks are forgettable as hell, more interludes than anything else. Godspeed will always have a great sound, and they'll always consistently put out solid albums, but this surely isn't the greatest album they have to offer.

Group 1850 - Agemo's Trip to Mother Earth (1968)
>psychedelic rock

I never thought I'd say this, but this is too fucking /weird/. It commits the sin of being pointlessly weird, like the only reason it's so out-there and insane is just for the sake of being out-there and insane. The first track is a nice slice of delay-ridden, thick, awesome psych, the rest is just deconstructed, held together by a thread, and irritating at worst. I admire its scope and how interesting a lot of the sound design and production is, but it's too haphazard and irritating to get into.

The Field - From Here We Go Sublime (2007)
>minimal techno, tech house

I guess I like my techno a bit more active and hard-hitting than this. The sample work is the best part of this, and I love how Willner is able to very, very subtly shift his tracks and loops to keep them from getting too repetitive. He does his damndest to keep the tracks from getting too repetitive, but they still get old, fast. The album is too long for it's own good, and the tracks don't do enough to justify their length or keep me interested, mostly because I'm not a big fan of loop-based music. Still enjoyable and chill, just too stagnant, for lack of a better word.

Aqsak Maboul - Un peu de l'âme des bandits (1980)
>rock in opposition, avant-prog

One of the most inventive prog albums I've ever heard. This band tries pretty much every style and songwriting technique tangentially related to prog that you can think of. Sometimes this approach doesn't work, creating something a bit too batshit insane for its own good, but when the band gets it down they hit something visceral and primal. It's a sheer explosion of sound and energy that's so damn fun and infectious, and the interplay between every single instrument is beautiful, especially when a punk track is played with an overcurrent of hazy noise or slight electronic noodling is played in the back of a deconstructed prog epic. Spotty, but really, really cool.

i mostly study to silence or modern classical. steve reich may be a hack, but he's a pretty sounding hack. i need to study more.
speaking of being bad at things, it was that night in the woods game with the black cat as the MC. i played it mostly to spite eric taxxon, because it was one of those "cinematic" games that he's into, and i wanted to get the upper hand for once. he rants to me a lot about how shit undertale's soundtrack is. it's fun.
the game was pretty solid. most of the gameplay comes from wandering around your hometown talking to people and old friends. it was like a date sim dressed up as a platformer, but with friendship instead of sex. it was a good idea to make the setting a small town, so i felt like i was still exploring stuff and meeting people all the time, but it never felt overwhelming or barren.
i could tell it was made by a small team mostly because of the writing. the first half especially is written like a teen movie where everybody talks in quips. it started to get pretty annoying for a while, but it slowly fizzled out as the game got weirder.
it had the first semi-meta element in a serious game that didn't make me want to kill myself in a while. that moment is probably the closest i've come to crying at any media in years. i don't think i've cried in like 5 years actually. i don't want to sound tough when i say that. i really want to cry but i haven't been able to for a long ass time for reasons i really don't understand. like i just haven't felt sad enough or something. it's annoying. and kinda depressing. but it's ok.
found myself liking the characters a lot, and i say that knowing i missed half of the shit in the game more or less. i put 8 hours into it. probably just gonna find a streamer who isn't irritating and knows how to read dialogue to fill in the blanks that i missed.
if you played it and hated i'd completely understand, but it was enjoyable to 2am delirious have-to-type-my-paper-on-grapes-of-wrath-tomorrow me.

i had an idea for a show where a person gets runner up on The Amazing Race, like the tv show, and returns to her normal life, but like she slowly starts to lose all grasp on differentiating elements between previous experiences on the show and real life. it's gonna be about social isolation or smthn.
>>71658721
>>71658733
that's only true if you want it to be true. someone could be the smartest person in the world, but if they weren't nice enough to make you want to be near them for long, they just wouldn't exist at all for you. everybody you know who is smart was nice on some level, even if that level is the decapitated, mangled version of their lives told through ten different biographies that you look at thinking you'd probably get along.
>>

>>71658812
i like thinking about really broad shit, like how i can have a great night at a party and only remember the one time i made a really shit joke that fell flat and created an insignificant awkward silence, how everyone else there forgot it immediately, but that's gonna stick out as my memory from that night. makes me feel small and comfy.
i decided i wanna go into psych recently because it feels like the only thing i've thought of that i would enjoy, would probably be ok at, and pays more than minimum wage (if i could do what i really wanted i'd be a janitor or something and write weird stuff all night). i heard someone say that everybody wants to go into psych because it's easy. that made me feel kinda shitty.
>>
i've been reaching for my phone a lot, like i've noticed that even when i don't have it i find myself groping my pocket. it might be some weird mental conditioning stuff that just kinda happens when you use something long enough, like scratching an itch.
it might be some conspiracy theory stuff, but that'd be too boring. too predictable.
i might also just actually have autism, which isn't that far off from everything else i see in myself.
>>
>>71658965
people think of being autistic and being gay and stuff like that as really on and off things, like you're either a retard or normal, or you're either gay or straight. i think a lot of stuff like that it a lot more based on scales, degrees of intensity. i think as society slowly stops caring about stuff like that more and more, that'll become more apparent.
it's kinda hard saying that and being on the exact other end of it though, being 100% gay with no interest in chicks. it's like there can't be separate genes that make you gay and bi. it has to stem from the same shit. it's weird.
>>
fuck it i'm not sleeping i guess.
this truly is my night in the woods.
near the woods. i live really close to the woods. there's a gun club near our house that is within range of several schools, retirement communities, and the trump national golf club. they never stop fucking firing. we have gunfire like some people have train noises, always lingering in the background.
my parents tried to sue the township. it didn't work.
>>
>>71658989
How do you feel about the theory that everybody is equally bisexual and that it's our experiences and views of self that shape our sexuality?
>>
>>71659026
i'd say everyone is likely naturally more inclined to go straight, as far as survival of bloodline goes, but it's entirely possible that for hundreds of thousands of years the only thing shaping humanity and nature was the urge for survival, so now that humanity is at the point that we can start wasting resources as much as we have, it's not really as much of an issue. it's leveled off i guess. that would explain why lgbt groups have risen mostly in the past couple hundred years. most of the gay animals i hear about are at zoos, which are about as close as penguins would get to living in suburban america sheltered by everyone around you.
>>
>>71659026
so yeah that sounds about right.
>>
post-fap depression
night lads
>>
>>71659026
moreover how'd you actually go about researching this or has that already been done
>>
>>71659075
That's actually a really interesting point describing our natural inclination to be straight as a survival instinct. I had always chalked it up to the fact that most kids grow up in a society that shuns the idea of homosexuality, leading them to grow up being naturally opposed to the concept. It helps explain why gay couples have more gay children, although that raises an interesting question about how many people have rejected their homosexuality because of a lack of support.

Also, would you really be hearing about wild gay animals?
>>
>>71659127
I'm not sure any studies have been done that go beyond just being a hypothesis supported by anecdotal evidence and self-belief, but it's an interesting thinking point.
>>
i hate everything about how the lgbt scene is branded. i'm not even talking mentality, i'm talking as far as advertising goes.
like if you want to make your thing inclusive to every sexuality or whatever, why is the general term for the community of people who aren't straight represented by an acronym?
an acronym that you add shit onto constantly. like one that's supposed to represent the broader community of offset genders that don't fir the acronym by tacking a Q on for queer, and then more shit keeps getting added on. give me one goddamn reason asexual has to be separate from queer. why can't queer just be the broad term at this point?
it speaks to a broader issue with the "community" that people insist on making this shit so complicated and then getting morally offended when they don't know what it means. it speaks volumes to most issues regarding progressive groups. the main reason alt-right fuckboys are allowed to bloom is because leftists are so quick to get mad at minor misconceptions. screaming about how right wing beliefs are the issue only widens the gap, it doesn't do goddamn anything for anyone. the concept of a debate in america died with the rise of a two party system.
>>
>>71659129
i feel like a lot of religious values come from basic survival instincts. back in the middle east, people probably just didn't want two dudes wasting village resources without continuing the growth of their town because they felt like gayin' it up. thus, anti-gay subtext was slowly inserted over time, as it likely was for all cultures. it stems back to why people create laws in the first place.
>that raises an interesting question about how many people have rejected their homosexuality because of a lack of support.
probably literally everybody to some extent, even if it's just by the ingrained will to fit into the mold of being straight, gay, or bi.
>Also, would you really be hearing about wild gay animals?
i wish. i want there to be a show like planet earth that just follows around one animal for a bunch of years.

>>71659150
ALSO i really hate the flag. it's pretty much the most boring thing you could ever think of to represent diversity.
"WE ACCEPT ALL COLORS OF THE RAINBOW GET IT"
>>
>>71659150
There's a similar issue with gender, where the need to label everything is quite a problem with modern society. Same could be said for race as well, although that's a much touchier subject.

If you really want to start thinking, try using your thought process regarding the branding of the lgbt scene and scaled autism and apply it to mental illness.

>>71659217
The religion thing sounds incredibly plausible, although it's kind of frightening if that was the type of thinking going on back then. Although it doesn't sound too different to most modern conspiracy theories regarding government manipulation.

>probably literally everybody to some extent, even if it's just by the ingrained will to fit into the mold of being straight, gay, or bi
Yeah, absolutely. Modern society has just made that incredibly hard for people to admit.
>>

>>71659258
>try using your thought process regarding the branding of the lgbt scene and scaled autism and apply it to mental illness.
oh yeah absolutely. every mental illness on earth likely effects everybody to some degree, just depends on what degree that is. the fact that mental illness is divided into several different illnesses in itself speaks to our constant need to organize things into groups.

>>71659258
>although it's kind of frightening if that was the type of thinking going on back then.
not really. people don't think about people that much, we're just able to hear their thoughts easier now.

i'm willing to buy most conspiracy theories at this point. like i'm not into it at all, but if you told me that definitive proof came out that every politician who has ever lived was a reptile dude i wouldn't question anything really. it might as well be that at this point.
>>
i keep telling myself i'm gonna do every part of my life i just lack the motivation to do now during college, but i don't think i'm gonna do all of it, and i don't think i'm gonna fail to the point that it's interesting.

maybe time is just being simulated between the points i'm being observed from or smthin idk.
that's the gist of it though. it's really relaxing.

Andrew Hill - Point of Departure (1965)
>avant-garde jazz

If you disregard the fact that Hill composed every track here, this is basically an Eric Dolphy album. Hill stays almost completely of the background on his own album, his subtle piano work serving as the solid, steady canvas for Dolphy and co. to go nuts over. It's a bit cooler than I'd like it to be, and some compositions fall a tad bit flat, but jazz doesn't get more rock-solid than this. Don't go in expecting what you'd expect from the "avant-garde jazz" tag, but it's still a great album.

"När då då?" is a game where you're supposed to list cards with events on them in chronological order, very simple, lots of fun. "Rappakalja" is my favourite table top game to play with friends. >Tim Buckley - Dream Letter: Live in London 1968

I have very mixed feelings about Tim Buckley. I loved Starsailor, but other than that, I haven't really enjoyed him too much. This was kinda one of those things that were alright, but I wasn't in love with. I enjoyed his vocals and I appreciate his sound, but it doesn't really click with me, and overall it kinda bores me. That being said, it wasn't bad.

>Nicolas Collins - It Was a Dark and Stormy Night
this is one of the more interesting things ive heard recently. the first few tracks are really beautiful arrangements, and tobabo fonio is a super intricate, noisy track. (which kind of reminded me of revolutionary pekinese opera for some reason?) but the last track is unlike anything ive ever heard, with the narrations and all the background noises and music. its an album to experience.
4.0
>Pharoah Sanders - Karma
this is the most "spiritual" jazz ive heard so far. the sax playing has so much emotion, and sanders' vocals are wildly passionate. the free jazz breakdown towards the end is incredible, too. loved this a lot.
4.0+

what should i try next from this
