Honestly yeah that was so fugging bad i regret everything, i was rushing it so i could get the physical copies made in time for this local record convention next month, but in the process i fucked up that track with midi drums, the CDs cost $7 each in shipping to PR, and the city won't sponsor the convention anymore so it will most likely will get cancelled. Shit innit

What's some good experimental worship music besides your album

>Gungor - One Wild Life: Soul

It's been a while since I heard such an intense mix of both excellent and awful musical elements. The instrumentation is usually beautiful, if not a standard baroque/art pop affair. The vocals are awful, bland, and uncompromisingly "indie" sounding, there are only rare moments on this record that are able to really shake it from being a slightly artsy corporate Christian album. I will repeat that there are some magnificently gorgeous moments on here, and I will be checking out more by this band. "Light" and "Lion of Rock" are my favorites. The worst track here is "We are Stronger", the band's self gratifying #alllivesmatter jerkfest that made me visibly wince, a rude awakening from the respectable first three cuts.

Charlie Haden - Liberation Music Orchestra
>Experimental Big Band, Avant-Garde Jazz

Big band stuff of this nature is usually ambitious, bold and chaotic. This basically follows the same pattern, with Haden showing off his compositional skills in an impressive suite-based movement. Everything is bombastic and way too over the top. There’s brass sections, saxes, clarinets - all the bells and whistles (also both of those). It’s impressive to hear Haden balance this huge orchestra, while tackling a huge spread of musical influences. At first, this feels like a Spaghetti Western, with horns and strings giving it an old school but triumphant feel. Then, there’s passages that transition into free jazz and even some hints of classical influence.

At the same time, this album ultimately ends up lacking a consistent feel. Not that all albums need cohesiveness in that way - this just feels particularly scattered. It has some amazing moments - with Haden shining on the bass on some of the later tracks especially. But in the end, I felt like this was just an excuse for Haden to show off his compositional skills. Impressive, with some great moments - but a little overblown and overdone. Or maybe I just don’t like this style all that much.

Leonard Cohen - Recent Songs
>Folk

It’s Leonard Cohen so you know you’re in for at least one amazing track. On here, it’s pretty much just the opener, “The Guests” and closer “Ballad of the Absent Mare”, with a few solid tracks in between (“The Window”, “The Gypsy’s Wife”). Cohen has some great moments as a songwriter but it seems as a whole, he focused too much on the instrumentation. I think he thrived when the production is more on the sparse/minimal side (his first three albums) and when he dives into something more ambitious, it rarely works. That being said, this has some cool instrumentation, with jazzier flair on most of the tracks. There’s little guitar riffs and horn passages that add to the romantic atmosphere on here. And it’s kind of cool to hear him over something different.

But as a whole, something is lacking here, despite some great cuts, and I’m not quite sure what it is. Maybe the weakest Cohen I’ve heard so far but it’s still definitely an above average release. I could see this growing on me though, I thought the same when I first heard I’m Your Man

Crass - Penis Envy
>Anarcho-Punk, Hardcore Punk

For whatever reason, there’s something off-putting about putting female vocalists behind punk music. It works so well though, I almost think I prefer it to male vocals at this point, I’m not sure why. Anyway, this is some heavy, furious punk with some awesome songwriting. I’ve never actually heard a Crass album before but this is certainly a great start.

Musically, this is tight. The drumming is so impressive and the guitar work is fast, energetic and passionate. Nothing too complex pops up on here, as you’d expect from hardcore, but it works really well. Though tracks like “Smother Love” have little artsy passages that work far better than they should. And parts of “Health Surface”, which are minimalist and almost glitchy, are such a cool approach to punk.

That being said, the lyrics and themes are certainly what boosts this above your average punk album. All the songs have strong feminist themes, with the singers challenging the establishment in a bit different fashion than most punk. “Berkertex Bribe” is the standout - railing against marriage, gender roles, etc. It’s just pure anger, I love it.

I think that’s ultimately what makes this album so entertaining. It’s so angry but channeled so well. It never really goes too over the top, if that makes sense. And when it goes into something more traditional songs (“Our Wedding”), it manages to be both catchy and a great parody.

I mostly just rambled this review but I thought this was a fantastic listen.

@yamir who I think was asking what bands I saw last night:


Oshwa - Chamomile Crush

This is one of the bands I saw live last night. And while not nearly as mind-blowing in studio recording as in person, that was kind of to be expected. It’s still really good.

Imagine a more deconstructed and minimal version of latter-day Dirty Projectors. It has that same distinctively spastic, herky-jerky thing going, in its attention disorder-driven compositions, often found in ROI records, but here it’s to distinctly pop-oriented ends. It also is similarly funky. That funkiness is hard to qualify though, because it’s so deconstructed. I tend to think funkiness needs an extended groove of sorts, and no song here rests on a groove for more than a few seconds.

It’s simultaneously catchy; funky, and abstract; avant-garde. It also tosses in bits of free improvisation-style jazz, both actually (in the songwriting, there are free improv sax break) and in obvious influence elsewhere. The vocals do occasionally remind me of those in Paavo.

And while certainly minimalist, relative to the stripped back solo aesthetic of the live performance (manned just by Alicia Walter, lead female vocal), this record is positively maximal. The live performance was just so good. Her voice is not of this world.

Oshwa - I We You Me

While I was surprised to realize I recognize a lot more of these songs from last night, this album takes a markedly more well-produced and structured approach to songwriting. The results are honestly somewhat disappointing. The craziness has been sedated and the compositions normalized. Alicia’s vocals are still nice, but she never really lets loose here. They also seem more particular and stylized—not so freewheeling. Don’t get me wrong: there are still some really high points here, but there’s not as frequently occurring as on the previous record.

The songs were consistently much wackier and much more memorable when played solo live (case in point, I can recognize the songs at all).

If you would've told me that my favorite album in the last few days would have a main tag of "indie rock" I would've told ya to go flip off!! I never really care for much indie music, but I really think this post-punk style fused with the charismatic female vocals work so perfectly. I really get a Velvet Underground & Nico vibe from this, for real. Not sure if anyone here would enjoy this as much as I did, but the only song I didn't care for as much was "Envoys". Otherwise, everything else was near-perfect.

Didn't care much for "Small Talk at 125th and Lenox" but this was far better. Discounting all the social issues presented here (although they're integral and inseparable to most of the music) almost every song present bangs. Least favorite tracks would have to be "
Peace Go With You, Brother (Wa-Alaikum-Salaam)" especially after the fantastic closer that would've been "H2o gate blues" and "
A Very Precious Time", which also kind of pales in contrast to its fantastic preceding track "Rivers of My Fathers". Lots of good shit here, and I'm excited to try out the rest of this guy's stuff.

Albeit a bit bloated, this is a really fantastic straight-forward psych rock record. It doesn't really pull many extremely unique punches, the Japanese traditional influence combined with tiny prog elements really give this a unique character. If you're looking for something with a hypnotic and slightly unforgiving atmosphere, ya need this in yer life.

SO the live performance by Ava Luna was actually mind-blowing. The best way I can describe it is like “pop funk Spiderland—but it works”. They had such a command over tension and dynamics, the music was so edgy, but it was also really instantly accessible. Now, that may seem too buzzword-y for ya’ll, compounded by unreliable narration, yada yada yada—but trust me, it was unreal. If you were there you’d’ve been grinning like an idiot too. Also—this definitely contributed to the awesomeness (in the most literal sense of the world)—the bass was way too loud there. That was great because the bassist was the best I’ve ever heard. I actually found him, Ethan Bassford, after the show when I was buying the poster and band shirt and told him as much, and he was actually concerned the bass wasn’t loud enough. Hah! He had apparently asked them to turn it up because he couldn’t hear it back where he was. Godbless shitty co-op house basement acoustics.

So anyway the record is not quite as good as the live performance, but it’s still pretty good. I love how they mix funk rhythm and soul vocal tropes into a poppy indie rock package. This was the perfect band to play after Oshwa. They’re remarkably similar.

In all honesty, one of the best ambient albums I've ever heard, though I didn't really care for the last half of disc one as much as everything else. For most albums I wouldn't mind this fraction of a chunk of non-engaging tracks, but it's about half-an-hour of shit I just didn't care for. Disc two is where it's at though. A lot more of a bright, optimistic-feeling black metal influence starts to shine through and this section gave me Aesthethica vibes for real. Not as consistent as I'd really hope an album of this length to be, but a damn fine experience.

Odd how Chaos is Me is only three minutes longer, yet is somehow considered the "album", and is much more consistent. If a track here is under a minute, it's guaranteed to be worse than the ones that are longer than a minute. Though it's not really that long, the five minute track closing this album feels HUGE, half out of comparison to the rest of the stuff on here, and half because it's by far the best song included.

Though not their best, this certianly feels like their most consistent record, having the good shit sprinkled throughout. My biggest complaint about "No. 1 in Heaven" is that the finisher waaay outshines everything else. If you enjoyed that and "Kimono" there's no good reason to pass this up.

Warm and "comfy" sure, and if that's all you're looking for in an album then by all means check this out, but I found pretty much everything on the second half to be super empty and uninteresting. Really upbeat pop that's about half doody, but nice for what it is.

Ava Luna - Infinite House

Wow this is fantastic. It’s no live performance—let’s not get ahead of ourselves here—but this stuff has that Slint-like control of tension and dynamics I loved so much in their live performance. One second (or one song) the band can be quiet, groovy, and tame, then erupt into blown-out head banging. It’s a fantastic switch. Hearing the songs on the studio album, it’s definitely no Spiderland—the compositions are far simpler—but it’s still pretty great.

The only time I think the band steps away from the live-studio comparisons I keep subjecting them to is on the seven-and-half minute “Victoria”, which employs freakish glitchy manipulations really only possible in the studio. The twisted vocals, groovy bass line, and extended electronica improvisation all also contribute to making it the best track on the album.

The songs are still funky, and the vocal performances are a fine, freakish combination of pop and soul, but the songwriting is next level, and the production is stellar.

Gonna go through this bit by bit, because this is a pretty dense EP. I really liked the first track, but I thought the really strummy, wet guitar tone turned me off. The second track builds a lot of great atmosphere, but the “dark”, slowed down Beach Boys edit felt kinda amateurish and made me laugh a bit, though I don’t know if that was the intention. Again, the buzziness of the guitar mixed with the vocals on track three really turned me off. I thought what was going on in the background was way more interesting, and I did really like how the actual notes of the vocals/guitar contrasted to the drone’s building and changing atmosphere. If that track’s main repeating theme were smoothed out, I think it could be fucking fantastic. I especially like the conclusion of that track, but don’t really care for how it fades out just when I think it was transitioning into something interesting. I also really like the beginning half of the closing track, but I feel like it kind of dies down and gets shittier right at the end. Yamir, I really do think you have a talent in bringing a really unique evolving tension and atmosphere that I think is pretty rare, I just think a lot of elements don’t feel

I'm starting to like this band more and more, and yet less and less. I've been listening to "
The Legend of Chavo Guerrero" at least once a day for almost the past week, but the rest of that album isn't as consistent. To be fair, this is a fairly consistant, well-written modern folk record, but I really can't excuse the gorilla-style recording. It's just bad and unpleasant to me. Some people might dig this lo-fi style more here, but I don't think it suits this style well. I wish these recording could be redone in a studio some day, because the shitty recording really just got to me before a lot of the incredible songwriting did, which feels like a huge musical blue-balls :/

I really enjoyed this on my first listen, but going back to it I really didn't enjoy most of it. The distorted, compressed instrumentals combined with the synths were all incredible. However, anytime anyone sang or talked at all I just fucking groaned. The dude's flow is alright, but his nasally rapping is fucking obnoxious and the singing vocals are a really whiny, gross, false falsetto. If this was 100% instrumental it might not be as active, but it would for sure be much better.

i agree on the guitar tone being pretty bad, i was recording my acoustic guitar (which hadn't had its strings changed in three years) through a $5 mic and i was pretty new at audacity so i was just tossing in any effect i could to make it sound nicer.
The Beach Boys thing was pretty amateurish and was meant as a funny thing. I'm going to share an interesting backstory on that track: I originally made it for one of those /mu/ makes an album things (pic related was album cover) and i was assigned a track title "Good Vibrations From a Dildo", which is why I sampled Marky Mark's Good Vibrations and Beach Boys' Good Vibrations. The song actually came out really well so I figured "hey, I'll just take out the moaning and call it a track". Agree about Rain Serenade, so close to being perfect but I missed the spot. The version on s/t is much better but it's very different. Last half was kinda a meme desu, i was just using this loop a guy gave me and tossing in random sounds to try and make it a song.

It's a very embarassing and amateur audacity atrocity, but everybody starts somewhere.

Not nearly as good as dataplex. It's much simpler, with more drones and soundscapes than the near-techno beatfuckery of the aforementioned album, and I don't like this approach as much. The tones are still great, as is the production (it sounds amazing on headphones, of course), but I can only listen to the same tone get repeated over and over again before I lose pretty much all interest. Definitely a formative work that paved the way for his more structured, interesting releases by having a greater focus on sound design than any real sort of structure, so it's interesting from that point-of-view but not a fantastic listen from any other perspective.

“Blind” Willie Nelson - Stardust

My introduction to Wilson is a really bizarre one. This is not your typical country - in fact this is just a collection of covers. Nelson adds a slight country twang to all the tracks, gliding over them all in a really smooth manner. His voice is really something, adding a lot of passion and emotion to a lot of the tracks. In fact, he carries a few of them with his vocal performances. “Blue Skies” has a tame instrumental, with jazzy little touches - but it’s probably one of the best on here. And his cover of “Unchained Melody” is terrific as well.

That being said, this isn’t the best album. Since it’s all covers, Nelson doesn’t get a chance to show off his songwriting skills - which is ultimately what made him famous. And while it’s intriguing to hear an outlaw country musician cover some pop standards (weird combo imo), it isn’t all that great. Nothing about this stands out aside from Nelson’s voice and a couple unique arrangements. Cool concept, okay listen.

Everything I hate about the 90's "world music" mini renaissance, or should I say dark age.
What could be moderately okay Hindustani vocal performances are completely ruined by horribly cheesy synths, pointless and distracting english singing with unbearable new-age-y type lyrics, and god-FUCKING-awful production that absolutely destroy what should be a beautiful vocal performance.
A Capella tracks just sound like incredibly lazily done vocal warm ups with some WHOA crazy delay (but only sometimes cause we wouldn't want to actually build any interesting progression).
I haven't heard any of her other stuff but I feel I can't blame Sheila for whatever dumbass ex-hippy professors with phd's in music put her up to this.

Nico - Chelsea Girl

I’ve actually explored Nico’s catalog completely backwards, which was probably a mistake. Both Desertshore and Marble Index are very dissonant, with clashing strings and guitar work making them both chaotic and experimental. This, on the other hand, has very little of those elements. These are fairly straight forward folk cuts for the most part, with mellow guitar, beautiful strings and even flutes(!) dominating most of the instrumentation. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the flute, including from Nico herself, but I think it’s one of the best parts of this album. Anyway, she still goes a little wild on tracks like “It Was a Pleasure Then”, where the guitars are a bit grinding and experimental - but it’s pretty tame compared to her other work.

Despite the mellow atmosphere, Nico still manages to make this album feel melancholy and a bit haunting. The lyrics on the title track are just absolutely crushing and something about Nico’s voice is so beautiful and depressing. It’s a wonderful pairing and it’s actually great to hear her voice over something traditional. For some reason, this was just one of the most emotionally impacting albums I’ve heard, at least lately. Even the Dylan cover managed to top the original, solely thanks to her voice.

Brilliant, I wish I’d discovered this earlier.

Frank Sinatra - Watertown

Frank Sinatra sounds like he’s singing to Scott Walker compositions? It also sounds like he was really inspired by Pet Sounds here? A good *album* by Frank Sinatra?

Anyway, this was very good, even if it is suspiciously like Pet Sounds. For example, the guitar is very prominent, while the orchestra takes a back seat. And also, uncharacteristic of Frank Sinatra, and archetypical of Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson, the love songs here are not so straightforward—nor are the songs always love songs. They’re emotionally muddled and all too sobering. Just like Pet Sounds saw the Beach Boys shifting from simplistic happy-or-sad pop love songs to more emotionally-charged and real material, Watertown sees Sinatra taking a step in the same direction. Too bad it was a one off, he does it well.

And even Frank’s heart isn’t in it—I mean, he never writes this stuff, just basically agrees to sing it for whoever writes it (in this case, producer and composer Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons, lyricist Jake Holmes, and arranger/conductor Charles Calello) and pays the checks—he sure is convincing. I’ve never heard Frank Sinatra so sentimental and emotional. And as I said before, the chamber pop and light rock accompaniment, atypical for Sinatra’s old-tyme pop orchestra sound, really brings out the best in him. Look no further than “Michael & Peter” to hear an example of the fantastic production Gaudio and Calello have to offer. It’s just so lively.

And the songwriting, the lyrics, while not ridiculous, are certainly a few standard deviations from Sinatra’s norm (i.e. on “She Says”; “She says she’s lost some weight…/She says, the city’s strange…/She says, the weather’s cold…”). It’s also his most concept-oriented album to date. The songs actually tell a story believe it or not. And I won’t spoil it, but the ending hurts.

However, I doubt he did this for the money. Or if he did, he was sorely misguided. Biting Pet Sounds would not have been a sound financial move in 1970. And the album performed expectedly: it was Sinatra’s only “major album release” that failed to crack the Billboard Top 100.

This was a surprising punch to the gut from Sinatra (really from Bob Gaudio, Jake Holmes, and Charles Calello, but Sinatra’s vocal talents shouldn’t be ignored) and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, especially Pet Sounds fans. It is imperative that you listen to the lyrics, though.

Someone come up with a "normative opinion/prejudice" I could possibly hold against some group in society. This is for a seminar tomorrow which is completely retarded and I can't really come up with anything that wouldn't be hilariously inflammatory. It is like that because that is how discourse dictates behaviour in group settings. Dissenting views are easily shut down simple from social reinforcement, rather than through arguments and discussion -- express an opinion that does not fit into the allowed borders of the current discourse and you will be socially excluded, ridiculed, shamed.

It has nothing to do with higher education per se, and everything to do with how we work as people in groups.

Often times, subjects such as gender identity, body image, feminism, and intersectionality like very close to the heart of some people and are taken as personal doctrine or dogma, and any dissenting voice is a direct attack on them, and lashes out on anyone who is willing to raise that voice. Only when they know they're backed by a large group, however. I know that almost any one of the people in my class would be able of discussing these topics one on one, but in a group it's impossible to be the lone one out.

Definitely. Way too complicated. It annoys me how little I know and understand about history, but at the same time the difficulty of the subject is a huge barrier when it comes to finding motivation to learn history. I know that almost everything I read will likely be strewn with misinformation, poorly nuanced, lacking detail and last but not least impossible to understand without a greater understanding of context, which I lack. It's a stupid Catch 22 - the more I realise that I don't know, the less I feel willing to learn.

Grand Designs is a really good show. God I wish I had the amount of money these people do.
