Classical is often written to be the center of attention, and doesn't work well as background music - too quiet, then too loud, then too dissonant, then too quiet again, etc. Unless you're on the volume the whole time and have a playlist of appropriate tracks selected, it may be more trouble than its worth. Just put some Jeremy Soule or Matt Uelman playlist on.

Bartok wrote for the piano like for a percussion instrument, with a lot of clustered chords.
Satie's music can be very frustrating to play, since he wrote for the piano like for an a capella gregorian choir, in free tempo, and it sounds like shit if you don't play it slow enough, but you'll grow old and die if you play it too slowly.

Also that anon forgot to mention the fact that Schumann was bipolar. He used to spend his depression periods studying scores, mainly by Bach and Beethoven (by the way he is the guy, alongside with Berlioz, who linked the Romantic movement to the late Beethoven's music), and during his manic periods he would compose as fast as possible, scared of losing once again his inspiration.
Apart from a few compositions (namely his first piano sonata, his 4 symphonies and his piano concerto) everything else was sketched and polished in a few days, often in less than 24 hours.

Variations are didactic/exercises you dumb-ass. Every composer does "Variations on such and such" when they want to unwind or try out new things. They're not meant for audition. Most "Variations..." during the composer's lifetime were published as 'bonus' material for other works. Most were never published during the composer's lifetime. Most variations ever written were never published, since the composer threw them away after finishing the exercise.
