Hey guise,

any interesting field recording (music concrete is okay too if it's not too dynamic) album that aren't made by Chris Watson that you can recommend me? I'm working on a thing and I want to look into more approaches on collaging sounds together that are not build-up of volume, followed by ambient synth into next soundscape.

thanks

I listened to the first part a couple of times today. I was doing some other things and didn't want the spoken word parts of the second one distracting me.
Thanks for the recommendation because the use of motives in here is really subtle, which was interesting to hear and different from my experience in the genre. It's also interesting how concrete this recording is, meaning how good it is at dissociating sound from their source and how varied in terms of sounds used and texture it is. Still the how feeling of the first part didn't stand apart to me, the feeling of tension created by juxtaposition of nature and machine, as well as the underling of the lows to get that drone/ambient feeling you can get from most records in the genre somehow undermined the high points of the records. To me felt that something was missing,
but I don't want to come as if I didn't liked the record (I liked it, a lot) or that I have a good taste of it (I didn't).
thanks

>>71009155

I already know about it, it's such an awesome concept and one of the few cases I feel bad for being born in "the wrong generation" and not being able to see it being performed at the ports of Baku. But on the other hand I haven't heard what else the compilation has to offer and given the timespan it covers it may be more then worth my time. I'm only familiar with the works turn of the century Russian (cubo)futurist, all I know about early soviet avant-garde I know for literature and cinema, so definitely checking this out. thanks.

The first disc is a compilation of recreations of historical things that never got recorded / the workings got destroyed. The second disc is actual historical recordings, though the actual sound quality is lacking for obvious reasons. There's a lot of poetry, but it does not actually make sense in any language, as the Russian futurists were more obsessive about literary experiments than the Italian futurists were.

The futurist movements were very forward thinking; it's a shame most of the proponents were obsessed with violence and thus intentionally joined the most dangerous fronts during wartime. And after the movement fell out of favor (in Russia due to futurist philosophy going against what the Soviets believed, in Italy due to it being degenerate), nobody took the necessary efforts to preserve anything; only one of Bragaglia's futurist films still exists, for example.

Coil - Musick to Play in the Dark (1999)
>electronic, experimental, post-industrial

I hope I'm not alone in being left completely cold by this record. I do love Coil (...And the Ambulance Died in His Arms, Time Machines, and The Ape of Naples are all stone-cold classics), but their shtick is done kinda poorly here. Balance's readings come off as much more cheesy than ominous, and the instrumental backings are just a bit dull, they're not as eclectic or dense as I've come to expect from Coil. "Brocolli" is really cool, because the low rumbles at the beginning sound incredible on headphones, and there are definitely some interesting production tricks here and there, and it's definitely not a bad album, it's just definitely one of Coil's weakest.

Let's get this bitch started

>Women - s/t
Good. Great. Grood. Better than Public Strain on GOD but "Woodbine" was sort of a worthless track. It's only a minute and a half, but when your album is half an hour it's really noticeable. A short burst of modern post-punk perfection rivaling Holograms.
9

>Republika - 82-85
2nd highest rated album today was also a post-punk album lmao I'm such a meme. Pretty much every track here was a hit, especially "Biała flaga" which is one of the best from the genre. Very few other "woah" tracks, and "Sam na linie" wasn't that great, but the rest were at least pretty good.Thnx 4 tha rec Jimbo.

>Nmesh - Welcome to Warp Zone!
oooooooookay. Jesus. Fuck. One of the most rewarding listening experiences I've had in a while.

This project clocks in at 4 hours and 20 mintues. Nice. Basically, a DJ Mix consisting of 10 tracks, each one about 10 hours. From a vaporwave artist I haven't really cared for in the past, but this is far from anything I've heard from the dude. Don't even know how to approach reviewing this, because it's just so massive, but I guess I'll start with the things I didn't like:
>Once or twice a track, it plays the same "All your base are belong to Nmesh" sample (seriously).
>It samples an uncomfortable amount of AVGN, like at least once a track, and even Irate Gamer once, who becomes the antagonist in the last track (dead serious).
>The last track, World 10: Nightmare / Finale is kind of an empty mess in comparison to the other tracks, being by far the longest and least interesting, which is disappointing following up so many awesome tracks.
>There's a lot of 80s, non-video game references in here, but there were times when the irreverent samples just went on far to long to extend tracks needlessly.
>The worst offense of all, despite sampling copious amounts of songs from the SNES and the DKC games, not ONCE was Stickerbrush Symphony played. Sad!

Other than that, this is fucking incredible. Listening to this album I couldn't keep from smiling a good majority of the time. I really doubt someone would get as much enjoyment from this had they not been as familiar with the samples being used, but literally every good video game ever is used here: song from the Mother Series, FF, SMT, Katamari Damacy, Pokemon, Sonic, Chrono Trigger, DOOM, Battletoads, Mario, etcetcetc. also, the choice to layer Smooth McGroove over some tracks here was a fucking fantastic decision. My favorite world was "World 07: Rave Zone" which, despite having the least amount of content I recognized, was about 25 minutes of bliss.

cont...
>>
>>71019441

This leads me to believe that anyone could probably enjoy this as much as me. Seriously, I could not get enough of this album, though it's far from perfect.

Doubt most people here would get as much enjoyment out of this as I did, but reccing to literally EVERYONE because I know everyone could pull something to enjoy from this. If you exist put this on your backlog. Could see this going up but there's total probably about half-an-hours worth of content I didn't really care for in this listen.
7

>Yamir C. - Yamir
Not as dark as I'd heard it would be from certain words/descriptors, but definitely a great ethereal feeling coming from this, which I'm a huge sucker for. Really easy to get lost in this atmosphere, particularly on the tracks "
The People Wanted to Know Why / Rain Serenade" and "Compulsion". Really have to admire its cohesiveness and the way such different sounds are used to make a really stunning atmosphere.

On the real, I was expecting to pan this because I like talking shit about Yamir, but I was pleasantly surprised.
7

>Various Artists - La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Enjoyed this movie, but musically it has it's up and down. The first four tracks are incredible, as well as the "City of Stars" theme used throughout. Though I didn't care for it in the movie, hearing "The Fools Who Dream" by itself now, I enjoy it much more now. Emma Stone is clearly the more talented voice here, and even though I didn't enjoy Dead Man's Bones, his voice performs so much better there than on here. Also, ya know the track they made purposely to be bad? Who would've thought that it actually turned out bad??? Every other track was just whatever or forgettable, minus the "Epilogue" part. Favorite part of any given music HAS to be the mash-up tracks like these. Something about it is so damn satisfying, and makes an up-and-down musical like this all worth it.

>Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Lovelyville
Has some of their best songs, and a whole bunch of uninteresting experiments. On one hand, tracks like "Nail in the Head" and "
Sinking Boats" are awesome, and on the other, one track is just a minute and a half of shit sounds. Hard to believe a masterpiece like "Mother of All Saints" immediately preceded this.
6

>夕方の犬(U ・ェ・) - ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ
an interesting bandcamp-core experiement that will probably interest more people who like dead space than me. Cute pupper on the cover tho.
5

>Kairon; IRSE! - Ruination
Just read my review of RYM on it. Doesn't really live up to Ujubasajuba nor does it do its own thing successfully. Just a slight disappointment.
5

>Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 3
Really subdued compared to their last output. The last two songs were okay but trades high-energy and punchlines for production cliches.
4

>Lynyrd Skynyrd - (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)

>Three EPs
Really ominous, moody techno with heavy bass on some of the tracks. Pretty far outside of what I'd consider UK Bass (but what do I know), this is still groovy in its own kind of way. I'm a sucker for dance music with an experimental touch, and this is no exception.
7

>Lubomyr Melnyk Performs KMH
Continuous piano music? Sounds a bit overwhelming, but Melnyk manages to keep it interesting at least for most of the 50 minutes. It only feels like 30 minutes though, so I guess that's a pretty good thing.
6

>Mars - The Complete Studio Recordings NYC 1977-1978
I know I'm gonna get crucified for giving this a higher rating than Contortions /and/ DNA, but this band has a certain charm that I can't help but smile at while listening. Yeah, there's some duds, but they at the very least keep it entertaining the entire time.
6

>Liquid Liquid
Funk-influenced no wave, based on the concept alone, makes me think it'd be my favorite genre. However, every band of said genre I've heard has been underwhelming based on my expectations. Liquid Liquid is not an exception, but they do pull off some nice grooves on here and holy shit, that drumming is amazing.

>Justok vs. Jimjazz
>Daniel Johnston - 1990 vs Lotic - Heterocetera

"1990" felt like Daniel sans charm. Not much to say, his songwriting is and has always been simple but here it lacks all of the brilliance that makes me like his music. This is probably my least favorite album from all of his that I've heard.

Three tracks from "Heterocetera" follow very similar, nearly identical, formulas. They present a brief spout of rhythm, then stop, then do it again a few times before going into about a minute of sustained rhythm/climax, then denouement, then the track ends. The opening and closing track followed a different formula, where they just slowly layer rhythm and noise into a climax. Basically what I'm saying is the only interesting aspect of this album is timbre, which is cool but ultimately a novelty. The rhythm gets dense, but not in a way that is cleanly syncopated. At its most rhythmic, it is just a bedlam of beats rather than anything clear. They rarely (never, if I recall corectly) used any of them spicy purdie shuffles or back beats narrow and hard to master, mostly just on-beat thumps and wubs with light embellishments. Timbre can't hold a work up by itself.

But what does it all mean!?

You both suck.

Letov wins.

matchup four boys

>Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
dear god that first half is stunning. however, the second half is weighed down by a less-stunning third song and an incredibly long spoken introduction to the fourth song. that song ends brilliantly however, so i can forgive it. real nice stuff.
favorite tracks: walk on by, hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic
7/10 i like this +

>Man Man - The Man in a Blue Turban with a Face
very eclectic instrumentation and odd vocals come together to make a very quirky experience. sadly, the various elements to me just come together like rocks and sticks in a stew. not very delicious.
favorite tracks: zebra, gold teeth, i, manface

Where's my boi rod at

>Djwwww - Arigato
In a similar vein to toiret status, I'm super impressed by the production and the arrangement of super interesting samples ranging from stock sound effects, to legend of zelda grunts, to other known artists.
However, the album as a whole sounds like a complete mess to me. While it was an entertaining listen, the ugly repetition or complete lack of any progression beyond the exploration of sound got on my nerves often.
Not quite on the same disorienting or sickening levels of toiret status but close. Still there are some amazing moments on here when things do mesh together, and the guy clearly has a great sense of humor.

Wall of text inc I don't feel like formatting fuck it

>Genetics and Windsurfing - Audio Stream Continuum
This album is mind blowing. This is a unique blend of drone and glitch samples that are molded into rugged, crusty trap/hardstyle beats. The textures are incredible. They have everything that I love. If I were to compare it to anything, which wouldn’t do it justice, I’d compare it to Pomegranates by Nicolas Jaar but much heavier and faster. In fact, it’s super fucking heavy and hard hitting and does not let up on the abrasion, yet it doesn’t overbear you with noise, each attack feels earned and built up to. It somehow manages to not be an onslaught of random noise, which I feel like has been a trend with some of the recent OM releases I’ve heard. Though the beats are hardly orthodox and constantly shapeshift, with a surprise at every corner, beats don’t go off like you’d expect them to, but they fall into place in ways that make sense later.
This is all probably just coming off as stream of consciousness and won’t make sense to a reader, so if I interested you at all, just go listen to it, though I feel like it’s a very personal album and most people won’t like it but hey try it out.
It’s one of the coolest records I’ve listened to in a long time. Bonus points for the album cover.

Gastr del Sol - Camoufleur (1998)
>post-rock, experimental rock

Gastr del Sol will probably always be that one band I really should be into that I just can't get into. O'Rourke's guitar work is amazing as always, and the tracks where his guitar dominates are always great ("Bauchredner", especially), but the electronics-driven tracks just go on and on without any real progression, and the vocals grate on me. It's more streamlined than the other stuff I've heard by this band, but it's still very overly meandering. A somewhat solid album with some big high points.

I understand that a lot of 1990 is pretty polarizing, but i don't see how you can discount the songwriting when tracks like Spirit World Rising, Some Things Last a Long Time, and True Love Will Find You in the End are on it. As for the live recordings, the stark contrast between hearing Daniel moments from breaking down and crying while people in the background cheer and clap is devastating and i can't accurately put into words how it makes me feel. Softly and Tenderly perfectly ends the album with a church choir that manages to both be haunting and comforting at the same time. Rant over. Anyway, sorry you didn't like it.

Just woke up. Coffee time.

The language experiments you describe are most probably Khlebnikoff's (transcription may be off) zaum works with which I'm well familiar, anyway I'll stop guessing and finally listen to the recording. Thanks for recommendation.
On the topic of violence I think there's a great gap between Russian and Italian futurists. With the exception of Mayakovski who has been in prison form the age or 14 (but who I think took no part in the revolution), most of the Russian futurist were die hard utopist, underling the spiritual side of the Russian soul that could be heard in the music and theory of Scriabin if that one comic book about music history I've read is right.
Italian futurists were warhungry as hell and I think even Marinetti said that "The sound of war is the music of the future/ the true music for the futurist. Don't quote me on this one though.
I think that the reason Italian works weren't preserved is that no body took them seriously. I don't think that Rusollo ever held a successful show at all. A top of that the short life of the movement (and all modernist movements at the time), coupled with the war (I think Rusollo's noisemakers were moved to an museum or something, only for the building to be turned into ruble by a bombing) helped a lot.
I think that most of Russian futurists works are well preserved even if the Stalinist regime tried to clear up the scene for it's own art.

>>71014641
I do too, that's why I ask. Lately I've been finally thinking of putting on a show or two in my city (Sofia, Bulgaria), which has virtually no scene or interest or tradition in noise/field recording or anything outside of the mainstream (except for a brief post-punk movement in the 80s-early 90's).
On top of that I don't feel like soundcloud threads or soundcloud in general is able to do for me, what I want for my music. I've been really struggling with that as of late. On top of that the only label that publishes noise/drone in...
>>
>>71014641
in Bulgaria, called Abandonment has a big "No submission wanted" sigh on it's page, and also haven't published anything in the last year or so.
The good think is that I don't really care if I managed to get published or if I really succeed in putting out of show. When I sit and start cutting up tape or playing with the mixer I feel this relief, meditaion-like, and that's what's important for me.

>>71015088
I've heard that. I would categorize it as "interesting" rather than "really good" or something, but as far as I remember it had some catchy singles.
>>71017382

"A mesmerizing half an hour. Like a crystal clear forest river, it's romantic shimmer leads one to oneself."

I won't set up a score and out front I got to say I loved it. There's that thing, a peculiar dense silence after I listen to something that grabs me real tight and that silence was there. I'm a sucker for American folk guitar and I'm a sucker for your record.
After I said this, I'll permit myself some criticism. Firstly the guitar playing on the album. It's evident that you are experienced in what you do, the tone is clear the rhythm is spot on (with some exception in the more emotional parts of the title track, which stand on their on just fine with the exception that they could be takes as off putting mistakes made by someone lazy enough not to bother with retaking the whole 20 minute set, just as they could stand as emotional high points. Still my problem with those are that they make the playing evident, anyway...) and the structure of the tracks, especially Amanita Mountain (which is my favorite) is well formed, taken care of, which I know from experience isn't that light of a task. The dynamics are a centerpoint of the album, with the fade ins and outs marking the turning points in the story told. A high point in the album is a part in Rituals where an open string provides a particular drone while, really gluing the music together. I could argue that the themes of the second and third track sound alike at some point, mainly in the way you slide the bassline, but I've heard your album just once and I don't think I have the right to make that claim seriously, more so that I'm pitch deaf.
As for the voice delivery - it's appropriate, subtle and clear, on par with the feel of the album, making the lyrics audible while still coloring them with just the right amount of melancholy to underline what's happening on the guitar.
I like the way the album's structured, with each track being twice as long as the previous,it makes the whole thing...
>>
>>71024606
it makes the whole thing move on it's own, which again underlines the feeling of a overarching flow, which corresponds both to the image of a river flowing I have, but also with the birds on the cover. I'm actually really interested in the imagery of the cover and the way the themes of the lyrics could apply to natural live as well as to social life and more than that - how both are felt the same with this clarity and honesty that make what you've did worth it. Typing this, it's nice that details like this chain together, it makes clear that the album and the pieces in it were actually thought out before recording, that there was some need of expression that set the stone rolling. A lot of amateur musician (myself included) have this desperate need for attention and are willing to produce content just so it could be out there, just so there could be a product to be advertised and liked. Anyway, to wrap things up, my only major problem is with the length of the title track. At around 15 minutes in, there's this fade out that I thought was going to be the end, but you continued for some 5 minutes more after it. There were some nice moments in that time, your playing as nice as a whole, but it felt too much like jamming, unnecessary, lacking the energy of the first 15 minutes. Stylistically there's nothing wrong with a choice like that, it's a bold one, I just hoped that the illusion of an end would bring a difference with itself, a change. Maybe that's impossible for the album, it's against the idea of the river, the idea of nature and the nature of things that are ever-changing and ever-lasting, but I feel like this fade out lied to me in some way, and maybe that's a good thing, I don't know. I say this because the album isn't varied much in musically, which isn't a bad thing, it's in own comfort zone, which is way the album is comforting,
maybe this is where subjective things start showing up, so I'll cut it up here.

Thanks for doing what you've did.
>>
>>71024601
I've never taken myself seriously enough to think that there's any sense in trying the platform. It always seemed to "professional" for what I do.
I also have conceptual problems with the whole thing. As of late I started realizing just how much effort I put into promoting my stuff in threads and in soundcloud via comments and reposts and I think that takes me away from what's important. Actually I just want to make live show since I think a big part of what I do is the performance and material manipulation that the instruments (myself included) go trough. Think mainly of the workframe that Artaud sets with his writings.

Still, I'll ask around and maybe re-upload some things there as well.

I feel embarrassed for making a third post, but I took some view more listens to Blakey tracks and my whole jazz period is getting back to me.
Mainly, Dat Dare with BobbyTimmons, such a fun hit. Blakey's playing is always so fast, input full, intense and on the point. And with the piano chops (especially with the rhythm of the more soulful projects of his carrier) it's just...

Okay, now I'm really pumped for this jazz section.

Alice Coltrane - Universal Consciousness

What a weird fucking album. It’s free jazz, driven by manic harp playing and multiple violins. Rasheed Ali provides most of the drumming too - so you know this is gonna be fast-paced and hectic. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at how this sounds - considering her contributions on John’s Infinity are quite similar. Still, I was taken aback when comparing this to Journey in Satchidananda.

Anyway, the first half of this feels like it should be part of the score to a horror movie, as the dissonant strings just clash in the most grating, jarring manner possible. It almost doesn’t feel like jazz for this section, with the strings giving such an orchestral feel. There are moments, however when this returns to more of a jazz sound. Alice blares away on the organ on some tracks and without the strings, it returns to more of a jazz atmosphere. Even then, it’s still kind of leaning toward the albeit avant-garde.

On “Oh Allah”, Alice transitions to a more spiritual sound. “Oh Allah” serves as kind of a middle ground between the two styles, with peaceful harp/violins kind of clashing with the free drumming. The whole second half of the album is a bit more mellow and rides off her usual Eastern influence thing. I really dug “Hare Krishna” too, probably my favorite off this album.

Not sure how I feel overall but the concepts are some of the most unique and intriguing I’ve heard in the genre. I can’t say I’ve heard a string section used in this style of jazz - and certainly not this well. Probably gonna need more than just two listens to fully digest this but it’s been worth the time so far.

>FKA Twigs - EP2
This was okay. In fact, I quite liked the first track. The production is solid, but a little too squeaky clean for my tastes. Reminds me of James Blake.
I found the rest of it to be quite dull though.

>Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Not much to say about it really. It's indie rock through and through. Would be much worse if not for the great lyrics and vocal work. Maybe I'll warm up to it, but I have my doubts.

>>

I do actually think they're solid. I don't do the "listen to the studio tracks before appreciating them live" thing like people have said, personally. I feel like the live version is more often the *real* version, and the opposite statement can be true. Especially because I just like how huge this live album sounds. Food for thought. You know best though.
>>
>>71039119
If I establish familiarity with the tracks before I hear the superior live version, I think I would appreciate it more. I'll be like "hot damn this sounds sooo much better".
Your logic supports that, no? Or do you feel like context isn't necessary? Cause otherwise yeah I totally agree live versions are almost always better

The Byrds - Fifth Dimension (1966)
>folk rock, psychedelic rock

A lot of albums around this time had their fair share of filler despite being incredibly short (this album only clocking in at 28 minutes), and this record is no exception. This was the Byrds' first real try at experimentation and psychedelia, with the monolithic "Eight Miles High" arguably being one of the first psych rock songs ever. This song and most of the tracks before it all range from decent little pop tunes to wonderful tracks, but everything that follows it definitely has a pretty major dip in quality. Their performances of traditional songs still aren't all that great, the band definitely has a lot of songwriting talent but they still fall back on performances of songs written by other songwriters and they really add nothing new to these tracks, and the more simple covers of traditional songs stick out like sore thumbs among the more experimental, progressive tracks. Still a fine album, because you absolutely cannot deny that guitar.

Current 93 - I Have a Special Plan for This World (2000)
>dark ambient, poetry, experimental

You can definitely tell that if you took away the poetry readings you'd be left with a pretty middle of the road dark ambient piece. The ambient backing wouldn't be bad on its own, but it definitely resorts back to a lot of tired tropes in the genre to synthesize spookiness and emotion rather than letting it come naturally. /With/ the reading, however, it gets elevated to being one of the most unsettling pieces of music ever written. It's somewhat melodramatic, that's no lie, but the poem is really great, especially with how many questions in poses as to what exactly the titular "Special Plan" is, and Tibet's reading is perfect. I wish I didn't put this off for so long.

King Crimson - Lizard (1970)
>progressive rock, symphonic prog, art rock

Lake and Wetton (RIP to both) both had vocal skills that rivaled their skills on the bass. Haskell, on the other hand, most certainly does not. He's definitely a great bassist, but his vocals are just so damn pompous and irritating. Lake and Wetton definitely had some of that pompousness too, but they could balance it with more subdued moments and some wonderful vocal climaxes, Haskell is simultanously a boring vocalist, a whiny vocalist, an unfitting vocalist, and a pompous vocalist. Even barring the vocals it's definitely one of KC's weakest efforts. You can definitely tell that none of the band could agree on what they wanted this album to be like, because it switches between hard-edged metallic prog, flouncy folky prog, and very jazz-influenced prog without any restraint or quality control, it's just a whole bunch of ideas being thrown to the wall, with only a few sticking. "Cirkus" is a great track, as is "The Battle of Glass Tears" section of the title track, but the terrible vocals and the extreme lack of focus make this a pretty mediocre album.

jens lekman- life will see you now
>chamber pop, indie pop, 2017

I pre-ordered this record, and it arrived on Valentine's Day, 3 days before the official release. what a lovely surprise!
i'm a huge fan of jens. this record is strange. i'm not /totally/ sure what to make of it yet, but I like it.
his previous album, I Know What Love Isn't, was really subdued and not nearly as accessible as his hit album Night Falls Over Kortedala.
Life Will See You Now is a move back into that same fun Kortedala territory, but it is simultaneously a move forward. Jens' lyrics once again dance between goddamn heartbreaking and lighthearted fun, depressive and uplifting, affirming and rejecting. instrumentally, jens expands his sound-world. on Kortedala he included elements that sound wacky, good melodies in nearly off-putting presentations, and made them work. This style is repeated on Life, but pushes the envelope of nearly off-putting. His song What's That Perfume You Wear uses an outright zany steel drum sample that challenges on the first listen, but becomes appreciable not long after, and somewhat beloved after that. I was similarly challenged, and then rewarded by, the peculiar female vocalizations on Evening Prayer, as well as the nearly-cuban sounding Wedding in Finstere.
I realize that these small challenges Jens presents to me rewards me musically (insofar as they give me an appreciation for styles/instruments otherwise ignored or overlooked), and in the same way, he challenges me with the poetry of his lyrics.
The popular expression is "Face the Music!", but Jens' music continues to face me, head on, and I adore it.

>Slapping Pythagoras
This piece is dominated by really droney violins that create a haunting atmosphere. Enjoyed a lot.

>Ike Yard
Basically Suicide's s/t without the personality. It does a great job of pulling off the disturbing vibe that a lot of minimal synth does/sets out to do, but also ended up being really boring at times.
5

>Killing Time
Experimental rock-wankery. I appreciate it for being innovative (very proto-math rock), but the end product is just lifeless improv that many bands seem to copy, for all the wrong reasons.
4

>Piteous Gate
This record was really surprising. It's an interesting take on UK Bass that sounds like it's attempting to deconstruct dance music and splatter its remains onto recording. It does a decent job at that.

>Dawn of Midi

Max Richter - Memoryhouse (2002)
>modern classical, ambient

It's a very hollow album, innit? Richter's got a lot of pretty ideas and a knack for making very score-esque pieces, but none of them go /anywhere/. The tracks all introduce a pretty idea and just repeat that idea over and over again. It's not done well like most minimalism is done, it just seems lazy, and a lot of the pieces really do just seem like generic movie score work. The more bombastic full orchestra pieces ("Last Days", in particular) are really cool, but the rest of this is just empty.

Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom (2008)
>lo-fi indie, indie folk, singer/songwriter

Probably Elverum's least sonically varied work. Normally he throws in some noise rock, black metal, or drone to keep his albums varied, but this is straight, to the point indie folk with some killer harmonization. It was very wise to keep this record 25 minutes, any more and it would definitely get stale, but the briefness of it works very well to create a very melancholy atmosphere that sticks with you for a while. Elverum and Eric's Trip alumni Julie Doiron's voices fit very well together, and the tracks that bring in some electric guitar are bone-chilling. While the strictly acoustic pieces are pretty static and standard, they're still done very well and they're still very beautiful. Good album.

Back alley shops are the best. The place where I snooped around about the publishing stuff is one as well. I knew it for a while now, I usually buy cheap cassettes from there to make tape loops from. I brought Homogenic (on tape) for what amounts to 20 cents in usd dollars. Made that out of the first loop I did.

I want to make around 10 more loops and make something more interesting.

So anyway, back alley shops are the best. When I was in Zagreb a few years back I stumbled upon one that was pretty big and had an amazing 5.1 stereo system. When I came in, it played some jazzy music and a minute or two in this flute just came from nowhere, it was amazing. I brought Jeff Beck's "Wired" from there on vinyl. They had an original pressing of A Love Supreme, but I was out of cash for that.

I'm interested in what you meant about (actually) listening to noise.

anyway, good cops!

I was bored, so I worked out my highest rated artists based on this formula:
>1 point for a 4/5 album, 2 points for 4.5/5, 3 points for 5/5
>mean of points + (number of albums rated/10)

This is what I got in descending order: The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Albert Ayler, King Crimson, Joanna Newsom, Captain Beefheart, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Nico, Aphex Twin, The Residents, Liturgy, Frank Zappa, Sonic Youth, David Bowie, John Coltrane, Can, Talking Heads, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Boredoms, The Stooges, Ornette Coleman, Coil, Nick Drake, Black Flag, Boris, Yellow Swans, Death Grips, Swans, Merzbow, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Sun Ra, New Order, Kate Bush, Madonna, Neutral Milk Hotel, Xiu Xiu, Brian Eno, Oneohtrix Point Never, Oxbow, Bjork, Fela Kuti, Sufjan Stevens

I wrote a python script for it (pic related, except I had all artists filled in rather than just merzbow)
It only took me about 5 minutes to fill in all the album ratings, i have 11 pages of them on rateyourmusic and I ignored the artists with only one release rated.

>Metal Box
Thinking emoji: the album. I don't know. Trying to get insight from others who are into this though, and a lot of people relate it to Tago Mago and Fun House, which are two of my favorite albums. Thing is, those albums are a lot of things this isn't. Crafted, practiced, composed, emotionally penetrable. Things I like, admittedly. Which isn't to say that this is conventionally improvisational music where the musicians bounce ideas back and forth to expand upon. Rather, they seem to kind of just play whatever comes to mind ("Swan Lake," for example). Plus, I happen to think that skilled musicians make better improvised music (duh). What this does have is a nice groove all throughout. Surprisingly toe-tapping. Really, the bass pulls the weight here. The vocals only work sometimes in my opinion. Again, I just don't know. I can tell it's grown on me a little bit with each listen and I see potential enjoyment and will probably try again, but am I missing some grand point in even criticizing formal aspects? Idk/6/10

>Free for All
Really great. Some of the most exciting, fervent jazz I've heard. This clicked immediately, though I found the more upbeat of the tracks more compelling. 8/10
>>
>>71049807
any preference for the album?
>>
>>71049719
wouldn't
for a in artists:
score = (sum(a) / len(a)) + len(a) / 10

do the same? You already have a as an element in artists so there's no reason why you'd use it as a key again? Why are you adding 0.0? To make a double/float out of the int? Isn't that rather sloppy? I expect there's a neater way to typecast in python?
>>
>>71049719
oh and also why would you put that line into score and then put it into rankings[a]? You never use score again, so just do "rankings[a] =" on the first line? (sorry, i get autistic when i see code)
>>
>>71049941
>>71049896
haha get a load of this NERD!
>>
>>71049858
I don't think I've ever seen the Fun House comparison, it's a weird one to make anyway.

With the Tago Mago one, while there is obvious influence, it gives you the wrong expectation imo. There isn't anywhere near as much progression but there isn't really meant to be, like I said before the main focus is the repetition, the groove is nearly the whole point and Levene's guitar is just there to provide texture (I use this word every time I talk about Metal Box but I can't ever think of a better description). It might just not be for you.

That's what it is for me anyway, others might disagree.

>>71049719
i should probably do some reading on code sometime so i have the slightest understanding of what's written there

been listening to more henry flynt, is there anyone else that does that avant-hillbilly thing? Only music similar I've heard is the less droney tracks on Ayahuasca.

>>71050269
yeah i love it, Stooges are one of my favourites
>>
>>71049858
The bass is key
I think what really works for me is how each element of the music is very unique, immediately identifiable, but melds together with the other aspects incredibly well.
You got that deep, dubby bass that drives the melody, but it's sitting on a sort of disco/dance beat. And the guitar is just there as sort of noise on top. They go for a very dance/reggae influenced sound, lots of treble lots of bass, on what would typically be seen as a rock record.

What do you like so much about it? I listened to it for the first time recently, and the only tracks that stood out to me were Chasing A Bee and Frittering. I definitely seem to be in the minority opinion though
>>
gravediggaz are quite good innit, probably would have got round to listening to them earlier if they kept the european album title tho, Niggamortis>>>6 Feet Deep

>>71050832
Chasing a Bee has to be one of the best openers ever, the noise is perfect.

>What do you like so much about it?
To begin with, it feels like a journey, which is kind of a dumb way to say it but that's all I can come up with rn, basically from the first track to the last track there's so much content to digest and experience that makes every listen of the record an adventure of its own. Second the songs are just so good and evocative, first to come to mind is Frittering but every piece here has something to give. For example at first I didn't like Blue and Black but now I love it for how peaceful and charming it is. Third, the atmosphere is simply very unique.
