The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Mercury Rev - Yerself Is Steam
Pretty cool overall and deserves all the praise and hype it gets. As for me though, I pretty much only love Chasing A Bee and Frittering. Everything else is okay.
Will definitely check out Boces soon.

>Comus - First Utterance
This album is definitely weird as fuck, but it's intriguing and unlike anything I've ever heard.
It's like Current 93 but not utter shite.
I'll need time to decide if this'll be a regular spin or a coolio thing that I think of from time to time but don't listen to regularly.

Yuri Morozov is probably one of the best of the Russian underground, he's definitely had the most diverse and prolific career
most people haven't heard of any of them though cause they all had to remain hidden and anonymous from the strict soviet cultural controls, so their music never saw the light of day outside of Russian tape circles
>>
>>70978893

I'm well aware of how difficult magnitoalbom releases are to come by, given that they were only given to close friends. Even some of the most famous artists out there have holes in their discography that will probably never get patched. It's always a small miracle when a bootleg emerges.

Japandroids - Near to the Wild Heart of Life (2017)
>indie rock

Japandroids have always sounded like a less ambitious, much more boring Titus Andronicus that have never had a song half as good as "A More Perfect Union", and they continue that streak of pure mediocrity with this record. It's just boring as shit commercial rock from start to finish. This whole style of overly anthemic indie punk has already been done to death, but this is bland even for it's genre. The lyrics are sappy; the songs are unmemorable and derivative, and they rely on their choruses far too much; and it all just seems like music concocted for maximum profitability in a beer commercial. The title track is alright, the rest is fucking worthless.

Erasmo Carlos - Carlos, Erasmo... (1971)
>MPB

Rogério Duprat doesn't have a massive role in this album, but the influence of his style of arranging practically bleeds over every single track here. It's a lot more rooted in western rock than anything else done by him or Chiquinho de Moraes, but the very distinctly Brazilian arrangements are still put front and center, and they're wonderful. I don't really care for the more straightforward folk rock tracks that much, but these heavily orchestrated, lush tracks are really astounding, and some of the best MPB I've heard.

David Bowie - No Plan (2017)
>art rock

"Lazarus" is of course an astounding track (see my year-old write-up of Blackstar for convoluted, stupid thoughts), and the title track is no slouch either. You can definitely tell it's an outtake from Blackstar, it's got the same very dark, dismal, jazzy atmosphere, and the vocals are terrific. The other two tracks are pretty middle-of-the-road. I don't like the hard-edged "Killing a Little Time" at all really, and "When I Met You" is a pretty safe little pop tune, decent but unmemorable. I'm glad they put this EP out, because the title track really is terrific, and it's a nice listen because I really wish we could get more of that Blackstar sound, but it's a bit pointless.

2.5

>>70982738
yeah, the first four tracks are really great, but the only track besides those i really like is walcott.

honestly it blows its load in its first two minutes with mansard roof
>>
>>70982772
nice! It's for real one of my favorite albums out there, and it's mainly /because/ of the folk rock tracks that I think it's so good. That said, one of the drawbacks of this album is that Carlos doesn't let the tracks really develop (Case in point: Gente Aberta). Even so, I think this is a fantastic album and I'm glad you gave it a shot

>>70982957
oh yeah, gente aberta definitely seemed like it cut off /right/ when it was getting good. thanks for showing me the album though!

>Glassworks
"Opening" was a beautiful piano piece and works great as what its title says it is. "Floe" was pretty cool; I was not expecting that electric organ when it came in. "Facades" was beautiful too. I wasn't floored by the rest of it, but I still really enjoyed the majority of this album.
7

>Too Many Voices
I was not a fan of this one. Most of the tracks here were pretty messy and dragged on too long (or felt like they did). "Forgotten" was actually really great though.

Kimono My House (1974) by Sparks, recommended by Anonymous
I guess this band is supposed to trade in over-the-top excess, glam, campiness, but everybody already knew that. The songwriting is pretty interesting throughout, albeit in an attention-defecit sort of way, but the record is so overproduced that it's hard to pay attention for more than twenty seconds at a time. Very tiring.

Oh No, It's Devo (1982) by Devo, recommended by trianglecubed
Another camp act, but a whole lot more listenable. Devo may be a high-concept band, but it's possible to enjoy them enough without loving the act. Put this down to a fabulous sense of fun that's not too overbearing and some tight synth performances that make Gary Numan look stiff and fusty in comparison.

Broken Wing (1979) by Chet Baker, recommended by s
I have my beefs with CB, but we can put those away for one night of smooth, toasty ballads, right? If I enjoy this record more than I expected to, credit that to Baker seeming to avoid as far as possible touching his horn. I'm a fan of Phil Markowitz's light, classical, and lyrically modernist piano solos, and the rest of the rhythm quietly smoulder throughout. Baker still can't sing, but on a late album like this one it becomes a slightly more endearing kind of failure, not unlike Jim O'Rourke's bad crooning.

Kairon; IRSE! - Ujubasajuba (2014)
>shoegaze

It's pretty good but I'm not really seeing how this is so special or original. "Valorians" is a really cool song and I like when they get very heavy and dense, but the lighter moments are really unappealing. They shed a lot of their shoegaze influence on these tracks and adopt more of a Sigur Rós-esque sound, down to the ultra-airy Jónsi-lite vocals. I don't like this sound to begin with and they don't really do it particularly well, especially since their crescendoes are less crescendoes and more explosions of sound, which can be done well but they become somewhat of a gimmick if every single song has one. The heavy stuff is real nice though, the guitars are crunchy and noisy and the drummer is incredible. I'm not feeling all the hype but it's a pretty cool record.

>Cloudberry Jam - Providing The Atmosphere
Sorry man, just couldn't get into this, didn't like the woman's voice much and the mixing of jazz didn't work well at all. Some of the soul inspired stuff was alright but I couldn't get past the voice, there's just something about it all. 2-/5

>El Jesus de Magico - Scalping the Guru
Opening 10 mins is some pretty great noisy psych, gud jams. Loses it's way a bit in the middle but brings it back up slightly for the last 10 with more jammy goodness. 3/5

You definitely have to be a big fan of shoegaze (especially mbv) and post-rock to get into it
Also, the vocals are the best part and are way better than Sigur Ros
>>
>>70993069
Offbeat lines, mumbly lines, stressing syllables really hard. In general vocal gimmicks anco staples but it used to more so be screams, falsettos and whispers not this. Also ethereal might have been a wrong way to describe it I mean the pronounced fuzzy bass and delayed panda vocals making it sound very much like both Painting and PBMTGR (in other words poopy)
>>
>>70993280
Listen to the rest of Boces!! Some of the best pop music out there imo.

Also, the opening from Ujubasajuba is totally an MBV rip, but an effective one for sure.

>>70993336
Yeah I wouldn't use ethereal but it is definitely some Panda Bear gobbledygook throughout there. I really like Avey's vocal performance actually, but they could definitely use some new ideas.

but at least back then you could defend it somewhat, now its gotten so bad its inexcusable. Its staggering how burn out and completely devoid of ideas anco seems now, even when they seem to pull out something new they're just rehashing an aspect of their previous stuff forced into the new setup. It's so odd considering how insanely varied their stuff used to be until MPP.
>>
>>70990961
nah
not as good as the PW stuff imo
the beat sounds real nice and spacey even if it's kind of a regression in style, i like it
vocals sound way less involved even though they're so prominent, idk avey's crooning voice doesn't sound good with such a laid back melody. lazy in other words, or it shoulda been sung mainly by panda, his parts were neat. but thats really where PW shined, well they couldn't use the hocketing technique again for a whole album

Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (2014)
>outlaw country

Warms my heart to see people keeping Cosmic American Music alive, this harkens back well to the golden era of country without ever seeming really derivative, but its definitely got some problems. The up-tempo tracks don't sit well with me at all, and the whole first half of the record before "The Promise", save for the opener, is definitely in one ear and out the other, just some pretty typical country stuff, well-performed and well-sung but tedious. "The Promise", a When in Rome cover, is one of the most genuinely heartfelt and passionate ballads I've ever heard, country or not. Simpson's already great vocals are amped up tenfold to make for one hell of a wonderful song. "It Ain't All Flowers" is a banging psych-country tune, and "Panbowl" is a very pretty, delicate ballad. The second half (besides "A Little Light Within") definitely outweighs the more generic, up-tempo first half, but this is an enjoyable album. Simpsons doesn't stand tall with the best country greats (yet) but I'm really glad to see him getting so much popularity, he deserves it.

N'Draman-Blintch - Cikamele' (1979)
>highlife, afro-funk

A fun album, but it's definitely very amateur sounding, which hurts the grooves going on. I just don't think I can get into highlife that much, it's very light music, and I definitely do like lighter sounding music, but so often this album seems like it should be going in a groovier, more urgent direction, but it seems content to just stay in it's pretty low-key comfort zone. The vocals are another poor aspect, they have no power to them and they seem really meek and uncomfortable. Some really fun tracks here though, "I First "U" Last" is infectious and "Man-Nou" has some killer synth work. The more negative aspects of this tend to rear their head on the b-side, which makes for an uneven but enjoyable album.

2.5

Fabiano Orchestra - Butterfly Island (1980)
>jazz-funk, jazz fusion

I said I wasn't a fan of the fusion on this chart, I was wrong, this is pretty fucking great. A few poorly-realized takes on reggae and dub definitely hurt the album, but everything besides these misfires are ultra-energetic, funky as hell jazz fusion, with some great prog tendencies. Definitely cheesy, but too enjoyable for that to matter.

Mark III - Marvin Whoremonger (1976)
>funk

Definitely the weakest album on here so far. It's just very generic funk with some overly sexual vocals that remind me of Blowfly without the charm and humor. Some decent grooves here and there ("Going to the Top" is a good track), but altogether fairly lousy. But once again, sampling potential is off the charts.

TOURNAMENT: OVER!

Pom recommended some rare brazilian groove. pretty straightforward, basically a long jam with a cacophonous vocal section. it seems to encapsulate the energy of a parade- albeit, a small and slow parade. if you really like brazilian music, go for it. pretty middle-of-the-field, forgettable for me though.

I really appreciate you posting this for me and everything
and this is obviously a well played and objectively good piece of music that holds high cultural importance
but it is tedious and boring as fuck.
I bought a cd once when I was at a record store with givingbear, and it's recordings of the radio in Myanmar. Royal Court Music sounds exactly like the little clips they play before talking about the weather or the great political and economic progress glorious myanmar is experiencing (40,000 jade lots sold at a trade expo). That CD has all kinds of cool shit on it. even a poor burmese rendition of an avril lavigne song.
ugh, see how easy it was for me to change topics talking about royal court music?

Ironically, I for the most part enjoyed the more musical tracks near the beginning over the melody-less ones that dominate the second half (since the latter is kinda what no wave is supposed to be). thank you so much for this pom! i really enjoyed going through it.

Stone Alliance - Stone Alliance (1976)
>jazz fusion, afro-cuban jazz

Batshit jazz freakouts. The freer bits on this album are so insane that they make the admittedly quite decent funk bits seem really boring and restrained in comparison. All three members of Stone Alliance were sidemen of Miles Davis during his most out-there fusion period (think the 71-74 era), and this definitely shows here. The percussion is insane, with hi-hat heavy grooves played on a kit meshing with the congas perfectly; the sax is in your face and uncompromising; and the bass is grounded and groovy, the perfect yin to the percussion and sax's yang. Some straightforward funk and disco-ish tracks kinda ruin the flow, but this is probably my favorite album on this chart.

3.0+

Sony Enang - Don't Stop That Music (1982)
>disco, funk

Light, fun, disco. Not a big fan of the boogie tracks, because apparently that Letta Mbulu album is the only album that does slower-tempo disco in a decent way, but the fast-pased four-to-the-floor tracks are good fun. Not much else to say about it, really, super one-note and forgettable but enjoyable enough.

2.5-

Aleke Kanonu - Aleke (1980)
>afrobeat

The densent afrobeat I've ever heard. It's not really fun in the same way Fela's style of afrobeat is, it's much angrier and heavier, and I really like this take on it. I still prefer the dancier take on the genre, and some of the longer tracks on here seem a bit pointless, but I've never seen grooves that are easier to get lost in. The percussion is straight-up hypnotic, and the horn solos are amazingly free and skronky. Very good album.

I did use a bass loop in one song initially, but it sort of evolved into something else over time and I took it out.
such is the nature of these things.
I appreciate them though, they all go in my sample bank for potential and future beats

Alllright, finished with the hip-hop section! Pumped for the jazz

Ski Mask Troopaz - S/T

Solid Memphis rap all around. Dark, eerie beats and some really tight raps. As a whole, it’s a bit streaky, which is kind of lame considering it’s only about half an hour in total. I’ve never heard anything else by these guys and honestly have not heard of anyone in the crew but they’re all pretty entertaining MCs. They all have that furious Memphis triplet flow which absolutely rips on some of the tracks. Production wise, it ranges from the generic No Limit/Mannie Fresh shit to darker beats with the classic Memphis flair. Surprisingly, most tracks aren’t overwhelmingly lo-fi like these scene tends to be - but they still have that feel at times. Pretty much everything you’d expect otherwise.

I can’t say this stands out in any unique way but it’s entertaining.

3/5

Ten Wanted Men - Wanted Dead or Alive

Like everything else Tommy Wright III has been involved with, this tape is dope. The beats are muddy and really lo-fi but also pretty catchy. A lot of songs I’ve heard from Memphis have blown out bass or excessive repetition but Wright’s beats always feel strangely crisp for the style for some reason. Maybe that’s just me though.

Wright tears it up as always but the real standout, I’d argue, is Princess Loco. On her verses, Loco is ridiculously tight. The best song is probably “Loco Ain’t”, which has this weirdly cinematic beat and a lot of repeated hooks. It shouldn’t honestly add up to much but female rappers sound even creepier and more badass over Memphis beats - and it really works here.

One of the weirder aspects of Wright’s music is his tendency to have lengthy tracks. The title track is almost 9 minutes with like 4 or 5 verses and “4 Corners Pt 3” is about 6 minutes. It starts to get old, especially with all the hooks/choruses but in the end I like that he’s trying these longer cuts. Cool stuff.

Great all around.

Eric Taxxon - The Anthill (2017)
>synthpop, indie pop

Cute little album. Taxxon's strengths definitely lie in soundscaping and not pop songwriting, so this is definitely a pretty unsubstantial record from a pop and lyrical standpoint, but the short forays into ambient are still nice and there's a really endearing quality to this album. The synth sounds are just inherently cute, as are the lyrics, the whole album kinda sounds the soundtrack to a kid's video game from the early 2000s, which is pretty cool. Doesn't make for a great album, or one that can match up to Sky, Simplified, but a solid one nonetheless.

2.5-

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly (1982)
>sophisti-pop, jazz pop, pop rock

Don't get me wrong, I like Steely Dan just fine, but this is porn for audio nerds and nothing else. The songwriting skills and the lyrical prowess of Steely Dan's records are completely eschewed here in favor of some really boring, typical melodies and a lot of really generic lyrics. Even the lauded production is just incredibly sterile, the songs are all so suffocated by the technical perfection of everything that they have no chance to breathe or really flourish at all. Some of it is kinda enjoyable, and I like the bass, but this is all just really oppressively plastic.

Yeah, Wanted Dead or Alive is at least worth another chance. Definitely grew on me after a bit.

I'm hyped for ALL these jazz albums honestly, I've been meaning to check out most of em for a long time now. Universal Consciousness especially, I feel like Alice Coltrane is just a super interesting musician.

I'm pumped for this reggae/dub stuff too because I know so little about that area of music.

Tight, looks like I'll probably enjoy this. I'm definitely gonna check some of these out. Also that Bwana cover is fantastic.

Hey guise,

any interesting field recording (music concrete is okay too if it's not too dynamic) album that aren't made by Chris Watson that you can recommend me? I'm working on a thing and I want to look into more approaches on collaging sounds together that are not build-up of volume, followed by ambient synth into next soundscape.

thanks
