>Hijokaidan - The Noise (CD 1)
I look up Dogwander's review of that one for reference. Being familiar with some of there stuff, the first disc reminds me of the live shows featured in Zouroku No Kibyo. Highly dynamic noise, from a standard rock set as a whole, but thinking about it, it's interesting how the material glues together and dissolves into a memory of energy. On this note ejaculation and noise music seem very much bound, as the sweet memory fuels dark desires to listen to "ultra shit" music again. I would listen to the album again and maybe revisit it once more after I get deeper into the compilation.
What's inspiring for me is how mad those bastards were, how they used every possible occasion to play and how they played. Trying to do stuff like that here (in my city meaning) and people telling me that it's too "ahead" or too "awkward" feels weird, more so that stuff like this was put out even before the 70's. It's strange how certain things are.

btw, metadata on the compilation (got it from rutracker) is shit.

I listened to some Magic Flute today, would use a couple of Mozart recommendations, as it seems classical music it's a void on itself. thanks!

Etta James - At Last! (1960)
>rhythm & blues, soul

James’ transcendental vocals carry an otherwise somewhat bland record. I’ll never be able to get into ‘50s and ‘60s rhythm & blues. I’m not sure if it’s because the genre is so overplayed or because I just generally don’t care for ‘50s and ‘60s (early ‘60s, at least) pop music as a whole, but this style does absolutely nothing for me. A lot of the actual songs feel like they’ve been done a million times before, and this is especially apparent on the more rock ‘n’ roll influenced tracks, like “Tough Mary”. I do quite like the very overly-orchestrated stuff, however, and the stretch of songs that comprises “I Just Want to Make Love To You”, “At Last”, and “All I Could Do Was Cry” is phenomenal. And, of course, James’ vocals are perfect. She can be smooth, she can be jarringly rough (seriously, some of her more passionate moments are /guttural/), but she’s always entrancing to listen to. Over some much more inspired instrumentals, James’ voice could make for a great album, but the instrumentals and the songs themself definitely hold her back here.

2.5+

The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (1967)
>folk rock, psychedelic pop, pop rock

I think they’ve got it here. The psychedelic influences on Fifth Dimension seem a bit out of place compared to the sunshiney jangley pop, but they feel a lot more natural here. They mesh with the pop rather than taking over it, and even the straight up psych songs like “Mind Gardens” fit well. The melodies are on point, as are the jangly guitar work and the beautiful harmonies. Still has it’s fair share of filler tracks and some slightly misled attempts at experimentation, but a fine album nonetheless.

I released an album of minimalist music, mostly for piano. This is the first album I've created by recording my playingon a digital upright piano and converting it to MIDI files; it allows me to experiment a bit more with things –which is why each piece has two versions.
It would be super appreciated if anyone listened and uber-appreciated if any feedback was given. Bear in mind the first track is the worst, so don't give up there –you can skip it if you must. The whole release is only 19 minutes. Thanks

i've been trying to sort my ratings system recently for the opposite reason, since albums i like that are lower rated don't get affected at all because my rating system is ridiculously inflated from when I added my whole library in one day without much thought. think i've just about got it sorted but i can't really be bothered going back and re-rating albums

Miles Davis - Filles de Kilimanjaro (1969)
>post-bop

Davis' transitional album, his last true bop album and the first album that would ring in the jazz fusion of the later works. The first thing that pops out about this record is how damn groovy it is, a very heavy emphasis is placed on the rhythms, and Tony Williams' drum work is immaculate. It's got some great melodic tendencies as well. The melodic brunt of the record is given to the keyboards, rotated between Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, who both keep the pieces grounded while Davis and Wayne Shorter solo their hearts out. The last two pieces are a bit too self-indulgent with their lengths and the solos, but the first three pieces are awesome, and being bloated isn't necessarily terrible when the music is this good.

Hey guys. I always have a ton of music ideas floating around in my head, and I want to hear how interesting you think they'd be before I invest some time into songwriting.

What sounds more interesting to you:
•A really noisy, buzzing, aggressive noise-rock album that takes influence from avant-garde music. Think beefheart meets big black but with absolutely no blues roots at all. Also no-wave influence
•A pretty interesting singer-songwriter project that's mostly solo guitar. Melodies are introspective and emotional. Nick drake/elliott smith-ish
•A straight up weird experimental album trying to be as edgy and non-conformist as possible. Think early xiu xiu but without any roots in pop or post-punk

Animal Collective - The Painters (2017)
>neo-psychedelia, psychedelic pop

Better than it's parent album that's for sure. Still an EP full of totally nondescript psych pop, but it's not irritating like Painting With, and the band pares back on their gimmicks, with the overused hocketing only making a single appearance. "Kinda Bonkers" has grown on me, the lyrics are still stupid as fuck but I like the middle eastern influence and it's not quite as suffocating as anything on Painting With, it's a lot airier and every element is actually given room to breathe, but it may boast one of Avey's worst vocal performances. The two tracks in the middle are /really/ forgettable, but "Jimmy Mack" is a really cool tune. It's a cover but they put their own spin on it, and the vocal performances are really energetic and fun. I can't judge this against their other EPs because I haven't even heard Fall Be Kind, but this is decent.

2.0+

Paul White - Accelerator (2017)
>experimental hip hop

The two tracks themself are pretty darn good. White is probably one of the most interesting producers working today, considering Hella Personal Film Festival and Atrocity Exhibition are my two favorite hip hop albums of last year, and he definitely does well with Danny Brown, one of my favorite rappers working today. The title track is a beast, it's got the same frenetic energy as "Ain't It Funny" and it's just a really grimy, abrasive, but still really hype track. "Lion's Den" isn't as good, but it's still solid, and I love the really over-the-top string samples. The instrumentals are a nice addition, but they're worthless, these tracks were meant to have Danny Brown on them and they just don't pack the same punch as they do with him. A slight disappointment, compared to the soaring heights of Atrocity Exhibition, but still good.

Art Blakey - A Night In Tunisia (‘61)

First of all, this lineup is ridiculous. Blakey on the drums, Morgan on the trumpet, Shorter on the Sax and Bobby Timmons rounding out their sound on the piano. Man, that’s like the dream team right there. Everybody on this album sounds absolutely terrific but Blakey takes the cake. His drumming is so absurdly tight but it’s also powerful, dominating the sound of this release. Definitely some of the best I’ve heard from him.

The album kicks off with the 11 minute title track, which is far and away the highlight. For the most part, it’s just tight hard bop with Shorter and Morgan trading off solos and Timmons kind of bouncing around on the piano. But about halfway through, Blakey bursts through with this absurd, chaotic drum solo. He’s splashing cymbals, hammering away on the toms and just flying through this track. I’m not describing this well but it sounds like there’s two or three drummers at moments, there’s just so much going on. The drums eventually fade and it’s all capped off by this bluesy tradeoff between Morgan and Shorter. Really tight track.

The rest of the album kind of turns into a standard hard bop release. “Sincerely Diana” is super upbeat and groovy, with less soloing from Blakey and more from Shorter. Though Blakey has about a minute on his own. “So Tired” is a bit off-kilter - I definitely wouldn’t call it avant-garde but it has a bit of a weird flair to it that I quite liked. The last two are pretty straightforward - “Yama” serving as the most ballady cut and “Kozo’s Waltz” closing the album in hard bop style. All the soloists are pretty entertaining but I was most surprised by Timmons - I hadn’t heard much from him before.

Anyway, this was great. I’d highly recommend it to anyone interested in Blakey - especially that title track.

Alberich - NATO-Uniformen
>Power electronics, power noise, minimal synth

Well this thing is just massive so I don't know where to start. I've always had my reservations about power electronics as a whole because the vocals in most of the PE I've heard have came off as cheesy/2br00tal4me. This album, for the most part, did not overdo the vocals at all. Most of the vocals were simply spoken loudly or shouted, as opposed to the usual high-pitched screams. This is power electronics I can easily enjoy.
As for the power noise aspect of this album (which is a large chunk of it)... I wasn't a big fan. All the power noise tracks basically followed the same formula: a simple looped beat is played for ~10 minutes with static and other noises coming in and out every so often. Those repetitive bassy beats got on my nerves after awhile, especially since they didn't vary too much from track to track.
The more atmospheric tracks were done very well though. Some instrumental, some paired with an indecipherable spoken-word dialogue (usually about war), these were the highlights of the album for me. The dark, brooding, ambient noise is what Alberich pulls off the best here and even though this album runs for nearly 4 hours, there isn't enough of it.
Unfortunately this album is bogged down with too many uneventful tracks for me to come back to it more than once or twice. Some great stuff, just horribly inconsistent.

these are gonna be brief

Antony and the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now (2005)
>chamber pop, singer/songwriter

Melodramatic but pretty. Anohni's vocals range from somewhat irritatingly overdramatic to heartwrending at the flip of a switch, and the arrangements are sometimes a bit too bombastic for their own good. Definitely some moments of beauty here, though. "Hope There's Someone" is a great track, as are "Spiralling" and "Bird Gehrl", but none of the other tracks leave much of a mark. Solid enough album.

2.5

David Rosenboom - Brainwave Music (1975)
>electronic, drone, minimalism

Damn cool stuff. The first piece is just one prolonged drone, it may come off as a bit redundant but the tone is perfect and it never gets old despite having a 19-minute long runtime. The two pieces that follow tread the same piano-based minimalism ground, and "Piano Etude" is admittedly repetitive, but both are still gorgeous, the piano work is wonderful and the light electronics add to them perfectly.

3.0+

Juffage - Semicircle (2011)
>noise pop, art rock

A bit too much aimless sampling and soundscaping, but the legit songs on this thing are otherwordly. They retain a DIY charm while still shattering your damn mind with perfect use of electronics and some breath-taking crescendoes. These moments are few and far between, but when they come it's something else.

Borden, Ferraro, Godin, Halo & Lopatin - FRKWYS Vol. 7 (2011)
>ambient

They get all these names together to create a project that basically just sounds like an OPN solo album. That's not a bad thing, it's just that the album seems like a wasted potential. It's pretty standard ambient, lovely textures and some nice progressions but it's been done a thousand times before. Still a worthy listen for any ambient fan or fans of any of these artists.

>Yo fish you wanna dump a wall-o-reviews instead of working on your comp sci project
yeah man i gotchu

>Joe Meek - The Alchemist of Pop: Home Made Hits & Rarities 1959-1966
Comparisons to "Back to Mono" might seem necessary by many, but I think totally unnecessary. Yes, they're both box sets from Pop-music composers/producers from the same era, but they're very dissimilar in writing and production style. Meek dabbles in more space-age pop, country, and surf rock. Just as good (if not better!) than Back to Mono and more diverse, and even shorter. I'm not gonna pretend it's a perfect compilation for almost two and a half hours, but c'mon man. It has fucking Wipeout on it.
Listen to this if you are a fan of pop music. Essential.
8

>Jens Lekman - When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog
For what it is, I never expected to get into this guy as much as I have now. Why I do think "Night Falls Over Kortedala" is his masterpiece, this extremely charming and creative series of indie-pop songs are super close to that level. The slightly lower level of production and orchestration creates a really unique flavor of charm I can't quite put my finger on. States-era Sufjan is a good comparison as far as similar sound, but also a bad one as far as songwriting, since Jens is much more straight-forward and sincere feeling (though I also love me some suffy too).
No denying Maple Leaves is one of the best songs from the indie singer/songwriter genre either.
8

>Jens Lekman - Life Will See You Now
AOTYSF. Not that this was AMAZING or anything, this year has just sucked so far. Lekman returns with a lot of quirky, surprisingly tasteful indie-esque, well-orchestrated pop music that only on occasion is hit-or-miss. Most tracks have at least one or two redeeming qualities, and the only track I didn't care for much at all was "Our First Fight". Pretty uplifting and humorous in comparison to his previous output. Just slightly better than that album I would argue!

If you're looking for a good 2017 pop album give this a shot!
7

>Jens Lekman - I Know What Love Isn't
Like I said in the above review, this is a much more somber record than he's done otherwise. While the excellent songwriting is still there, the orchestration is a bit more straight-forward and less satisfying. Still, some of his best material is present here. The last four songs in particular are really amazing. If THIS is your worst album, you know you're doing something right.
7

>Mick Jenkins - The Water[s]
Was expecting a really nice surprise, and instead got a pretty good popular rap album for today's standards. I didn't think anything special of the man himself, but his production is really something else. Finding a way to incorporate the conscious/jazz rap style into a modern frame somewhat similar to Kendrick is a pretty impressive feat. SPEAKING of feat, the features on this thing are terrible. Anytime anyone other than Jenkins is rapping it's a groan. Jazz is a great track too. If you want a dece modern hip-hop album with good production and sample-work, give this a shot.
6

>Kate Bush - Before the Dawn
Two and a half performers of one of the greatest pop vocalists of her time performing about four good songs. I refuse to hate this outright since "Walkin' Up that Hill" and "Cloudbusting", two of the best pop songs ever, make an appearance on here. Yeah, there's the spoken word parts, but there's very few expansive or interesting parts throughout this adventure. 98.12.28 has ruined me, and I expect every live album to live up to its standards, which is just really unfair. You can't hate Kate Bush's amazing (and recent!) performances here, but I didn't love waiting over an hour for something exciting between discs 1 and 3.

>Hype Williams - Untitled
How can one man have so many interesting projects, concepts, and music in general, but consistently fall this short? Seriously, this has a lot of awesome moments, but I feel like every interesting idea lost in the really shotty, crunchy production of it all. Would like for more people to hear this, especially if a mix of Hypnagogic Pop and Free Folk sounds tasty to you. Will revisit this.
4

>Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Zuma
I really don't think I HATE anything by Young, I'm just really bored by it. Best album cover ever aside, there wasn't a huge amount I took away from this. The first two tracks and Cortez (awesome) are good, but the rest doesn't hit with me at all. He's a great song-writer, but it almost seems like there's a layer of depth that has struck everyone else but me and I feel left out :/

Cortez the Killer is by far his best song, but both Slint and Built to Spill outdid him. Wish I hadn't heard those versions first.
4

>Current 93 - I Have a Special Plan for This World
Nat made the point that "without the poetry, this would be nothing special." However, this is exactly that. The reason you rarely hear me talk about lyricism is because to me 90% of the time it just doesn't matter. This could be the most mind-blowing poem ever, but that doesn't change the fact that the music is really nothing special. Repetitious drone with almost zero redeeming qualities. Seriously, after several listens I can't find anything special about the musical aspect of this at all. The poetry is extremely interesting, but ultimately worthless when there are no good musical elements to it. I almost felt like I should be obligated to like this based on other scores, but I honestly just didn't. I'm really not trying to go out of my way to hate these guys' stuff, in fact, I think what they're doing is incredibly interesting and I WANT to like them, but none of it has clicked for me yet.

>there's a difference between coherence and changing your mind, the former is in the moment the latter happens over time
alright this is clumsy and too general but i hope it gets something across because i dont even give a shit about some guy in some band that made one great song, it's just a general thing that kinds ticks me off. congrats anon, but in any case "expecting coherency" is full autism on your side
whenever someone discovers that at one point you said something that condemns or nah is just different from whatever you're doing now it's a faux-pas
that's why, yfm? it's more just a way to fight an argument or something than anything. kinda like how you're just being cheeky, that's exactly what i mean. it's glib, disingenuous by trying to press that judgement onto another
that new linkin park single isn't worse because they once said they didn't like how soft radio rock became (it's just kinda bad because it's bad)
you're supposed to appease your envoirment's image of you though, and what you think your personality is, it solidifies both ways just like this expectation of coherency in society as a result of self-delusion. this is why characters in a story should be coherent, fiction should be coherent, but it's not that autistically simple
naturally your stupid brain does everything in its might to minimize cognitive dissonance and you have to contextualize everything new but you know what? idk where to go with this from here. but so far: "expecting coherency" is a means to shame and control. not "insane" in terms of an outlier however because it's normalized by an insane, autistic, delusional society
thus another reason why pic related is 10/10, sporkcore is psychic warfare and a righteous struggle for freedom

Haven't reviewed (airquotes not provided but heavily implied) a thing in quite some time

Psychic Paramount - 2
A pretty wild ride all in all, unrelenting whilst still managing to be enjoyable all the same, was not surprised to learn that this band is the spiritual offshoot of Laddio Bolocko, there is quite a lot of similarities woven into this thing's DNA
It's not perfect, tends to drag a bit because they Just.....Keep.....Playing, but overall I would give this a recommendation to anybody remotely interested in noise rock.

Acid Mother's Temple & The Cosmic Inferno - Chaos Unforgiven Kisses or the Grateful Dead Kennedys
That's a rubber donkey of a name right there that is.
Overall not as earthquaking or Satori inducing as something like La Novia, but I can hardly blame the musicians that, I've noticed that the style seems to be for Japanese psychedelia to build to an ultimate fever pitch, layer-upon-layer of instrumentation until it all goes down in a blaze of glory (look at me with my cliche's haha), under the right circumstances (and potentially under the right influences) that works really well, but in this case, the music was way to chaotic (go figure it says it on the tin) to be enjoyable in that way. It's not bad, but it's not quite there either.

Vallium Aggelein - Hier Kommt der Schwartze Mond
It's pretty alright, kind of hazy inner city street, maybe 7 maybe 8 pm, maybe going to a friend's gig, maybe thinking about the lack of sleep and how it will be good to catch up kinda music. Purple prose aside, it's really swirly slowcore that will evoke memories of adolescence. Kinda reminded me of Tarantel on From Bone to Sattelite in places, really sad and quite obviously trying to be pretty, it succeeds, for what it's worth.
Wasn't surprised that they were related in some way to Duster

Grateful Dead - Europe 72'
There are some great songs here, Jack Straw sticks out, as does He's Gone and Truckin'. Think I might be getting Grateful Dead burnout though, I've listened to a lot of their stuff in the past month.

I decided to review all of the albums on my to-listen list. It's kind of boring doing them strictly in alphabetical order, so do you guys have any picks from the chart in pic related?

If you're at all interested, the reviews so far are here: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/regency/reviewing-all-the-albums-in-my-backlog/

whitney- light upon the lake
>indie folk, 2016

I almost wanted to quit on the first listen because I found the vocals really annoying. I just about turned it off and slapped a red bar on this chart. I carried on, compelled by the melodies, and came to like the vocals, then really enjoy them. they're about the only hang-up I had with this record, and after a couple of listens it was completely overcome. instrumentally, Light is gorgeous and comfy. it even reminds me a bit of Nico- the title track, "Light Upon the Lake", has a guitar performance that sounds like and makes me feel similarly to Nico's "These Days" (you know that song- featured in The Royal Tenenbaums). I bet Whitney could similarly benefit from a string section.
of course, not every song is amazing, but overall it's very strong. Laden with soft, hazy imagery, the album gives an impression of nostalgia- though not in a depressive manner that disregards the present and future.

Light Upon the Lake exists in that same sort of comfortable, lovey world as the Cardigans, the Motifs, Paul McCartney, LAKE, Mac Demarco, and Coconut Records.

favorite tracks: no woman, light upon the lake, dave's song, polly.

Prayers on Fire has the classic noisy post-punk sound of the late 70s and early 80s, and manages to pair it with some fairly novel choices of instrumentation and a completely insane vocal style. Quite a few of the tracks on this album use the technique often seen in funky no wave music (such as that from James Chance & The Contortions) of repeating a phrase and allowing the vocalist to perform in a manic, freeform-sounding way over the top. I think the best track to do this is Kid Ink, which has a thick bassy riff that sounds like it could have been performed on Raw Power. Not only is it Nick Cave's weird vocals (e.g. on the track Nick the Stripper) that make this album stand out from others with a similar style, but I think the bluesy piano, which makes some tracks sound like the soundtrack to a pub from hell, and the saxophone that matches Nick Cave's fiery attitude display a unique sound to the record.

oh shit I missed that review! Glad you liked the newest pitchfork-brand of indie ;p

seriously though, I'm glad I gave u a good rec. You need to hear Rufus Wainwright's s/t. D you have any thoughts about Car Seat Headrest, particularly Twin Fantasy? I think you might get a kick out of it. If you want more Fish-gf-core, you should try out either of those, Dopamine by Borns, Townes Van Zandt's s/t or Our Mother the Mountain, or some of Johnny Cash's later material, specifically "Unearthed" or his "American" series.

His earlier Bad Seeds stuff might really appeal to you given you like that Birthday Party album. Highly rec anything from Your Funeral ... My Trial to No More Shall We Part. Already like Cash a lot (prefer his early stuff) but I'll add the other to the backlog. What Nelson do you recommend? I've got quite a bit in my iTunes because of my dad but I've never liked it much.
>>
>>71075197
idk If I could point to some specific examples, but I feel as if I too often interject, and it makes my writing hard to follow. Maybe I'm too over-critical, but I'd like to be less of a comma-flinger.

>>71075312
Best Nelson is his Shotgun Willie, Phases and Stages, and Red Headed Stranger trilogy. Especially the latter two.

Also maybe try Will the Circle Be Unbroken if you want something a bit more traditional/bluegrass. Shit's fun.

>>71075418
A consideration would be, rather than interject, finish your original thought then expand the prior interjection in a separate paragraph.

Alright Trip, the time has finally come!

Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music

First of all, I’m not usually sure how to feel about Mingus. His music is consistently pretty great but everything he does feels sooo pretentious. Like, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is great but it always feels so self-indulgent and overly dramatic. I get the same feel from his other albums, even though I usually dig them.

For some reason, Mingus goes even further on this album but it somehow feels less pompous. Mingus’ compositional skills are just nuts and they’re really shown off here. There’s a huge collection of instruments on here, used in orchestral fashion. To give you a sense of the absurdity of this orchestra, there’s three tubas, five french horns and fourteen different saxophonists credited - including two baritones. With this immense scope of an album, you’re either gonna get a masterpiece or a huge hunk of shit - I think this leans towards the former. Honestly, it’s probably the best attempt at third stream I’ve ever heard.

There’s so much depth in these songs that I don’t even know how to talk about them. So much emotion and thought put into this album, it’s actually a bit staggering. Tracks like “The Shoes of a Fisherman’s Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers” and “Don’t Be Afraid, The Clown’s Afraid Too” are so intense. “Hobo Ho” is one of the weirdest but funkiest tracks I’ve heard in jazz too, good god. And “The Chill of Death” could have easily come off as pompous as well but it works incredibly well.

One of the coolest jazz albums I’ve heard, though I still need more listens to digest honestly.

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness at the Edge of Town

Only The Boss could make me feel nostalgic about an era in which I never lived. Something about his music makes me extremely sentimental and I’m not sure why. My dad’s a big fan of his music but I never listened to him all that much early on. This whole album just screams middle America in the 70s to me, really thriving of that heartland rock atmosphere.

Anyway, some really great cuts on here, like “Badlands”, “Racing in the Street”, “Streets on Fire” and “Prove It All Night”.

Also, Clarence Clemons consistently has some of the corniest fucking sax riffs I’ve heard but they work sooo well with this style. I have no idea why, anyone else in any other genre would sound shitty but he pulls it off.

I need to get more into Bruce.

3.5/5

James Brown - Hell

Really tight/funky stuff as you’d expect from Brown but it’s far less consistent than the other albums I’ve heard. Nice grooves, lots of cool vocals from Brown and great soloing. The biggest difference is this album lacks a consistent feel. Hot Pants has this dark, brooding sound and The Payback feels like a huge jam - this is just all over the place. Upbeat songs lead into slow jams. Short tracks take up a majority of this album but there are randomly two really lengthy cuts (8, 14 minutes) thrown in here. It’s more varied for sure - but as a result feels like a smattering of Brown’s styles.

Great, even if it is somewhat inconsistent.

3.5/5

Not on the chart but I also checked out Future’s s/t earlier, which was a pleasant surprise. Production-wise, it replaced the obnoxious repetitive approach of DS2 with the more ambient-ish beats of Savage Mode. Bit long but enjoyable, with some of the best beats he’s rapped over. 3/5

Where to next?

what you say about the sax riffs goes for most of Bruce's music, it's all pretty corny but there's something about it that works. And like you I don't exactly know why, could be down to the fact that underneath the cheese, Bruce always sounds honest and heartfelt.

Also agree with Hell being disjointed, it's no The Payback. Big Star next pls
>>
>>71079067
>could be down to the fact that underneath the cheese, Bruce always sounds honest and heartfelt.

Wasn't sure how to describe it but I think you really nailed it right there. His voice makes him sound so earnest

>Big Star next pls

Will do!
>>
>>71079067
Nice points. Totally works, and it takes a special artist to get you to the point where you even like the cheese. Trying to think of other work in that category. Avalon by Roxy Music, some Steely Dan. Anyone think of other examples?
>>
>>71079285
I can't really think of any others off the top of my head but I do tend to avoid that style of 70s/80s rock, finding the good doesn't seem worth the bad

Dorothy Ashby - The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby
>post-queen-wave, jazz
Beautiful album from start to finish, but would get a much MUCH higher score from me if it ever went anywhere. Nice aimless meander in any case :)
3.5/5

Aleke Kanonu - Aleke
>post-disco, afrobeat
Next-level disco/afrobeat mishmash, better than the Afrika 70's Jealousy. The opener is a 13-minute-long monster, sung in Yoruba and English. The next two tracks are ok to middling, but the closer is something else. Wynton Marsalis's superb flugelhorn solo makes the record, for sure.
4/5

Fela Kuti and the Afrika 70 - Zombie
>afrobeat
YASS KING, #EXPOSE THEM
5/5

Fela Ransome Kuti and the Afrika 70 - Expensive Shit
>afrobeat
Beautiful effort, though not quite as good as Zombie. Thoughtful music you can shake your ass to.
4.5/5

Fela Ransome-Kuti and the Afrika 70 - He Miss Road
>afrobeat
Unlike most other works by Fela Kuti and his Afrika 70, this manages to be a fairly boring, ho-hum, even subpar composition. Still pretty ok but nothing earth-shattering like Expensive Shit or Zombie.
2.5/5

N'Draman Blintch - Cikamele
>post-afrobeat, disco
Funky beats produced by none other than the late SYNTHESIZER GOD WILLIAM ONYEABOR. That on its own gives it at least two stars. The funk it brings gives it another. The synth on Man-Nou is really something else.

Big Star - Third/Sisters

I remember #1 Record being an enjoyable record but it didn’t blow me away or anything. I was expecting greatness from a band with such a cult following but didn’t get it. After hearing this album, I think I understand the hype. Definitely one of the best pop rock albums I’ve heard. Alex Chilton has this incredibly passionate voice that gives this whole album an incredibly melancholy feel. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of some twee groups, Belle & Sebastian in particular. You can tell that the band was going through some shit at the time, it’s really reflected in the music. Really just a touching, emotional album, which is why I loved it.

“O, Dana” is a damn masterpiece but there’s some awesome songs all throughout. “Take Care”, “For You”, “Holocaust” and “You Can’t Have Me” are all terrific as well. In fact, “Kanga Roo” and “Stroke It Noel” were the only songs that felt like duds. Great songwriting and it’s surprisingly consistent for an hour long pop rock album, really dug it.

For now yeah. I'm going to have to spend most of reading week catching up on courses though because this semester is ridiculous. Probably the hardest semester I'll ever have to do and not something I'd recommend for anyone who plans on remaining sane. I pretty much have to start studying for exams like now.
Hype for your upcoming jazz reviews though; I listened to Blakey's Africaine. All I've listened to for the past 10 days or so has been minimalism and classical piano so it's a nice return to reality.

Civil Engineering at Queens U. I graduated college with an advanced diploma last year and I'm doing a transfer program so I have a mismatch clusterfuck of a year. Luckily this semester I don't have overlapping courses and tests like last, but I seem to have all the hardest prereq courses from years 1-3 in the same semester when they're supposed to be spaced out.
So in2 months I'll have 6 hard exams in the span of 10 days, all worth 43-70% of their respective courses.
Whatever, I'll get through it with a shit GPA and life will go on.
>>
>>71083271
Damn that's intense, I don't think I could ever do engineering. Also, absurd that all your finals are all that much of your grade, most of mine were probably in the high 40% if anything. So are you in grad school then or just a transfer student in undergrad?

That's what you have to keep in mind during all the stress. Like, GPA kinda matters but in the long run but one off semester won't ruin your life or anything

Jim O'Rourke - Eureka
>Art pop, chamber pop, jazz pop
"Women of the World" was a wonderfully simple tune, but I was disappointed by two things: when I found out it was a cover, and when I found out the rest of the album isn't nearly as good. Half of the album felt like interludes, which means that the interesting bits were few and far between. "Something Big" was a catchy bossa nova-esque tune that came out of nowhere and was a pleasant surprise, and "Eureka" was a nice closer. Good, but a little disappointing for me.

Sun Ra - Atlantis
>Free jazz, free improvisation
The first half was a series of mostly percussion-led free improv that was rhythmic and a little groovy. Solid. The second half was Sun Ra banging on an electric keyboard for 20 minutes... and it couldn't have been much better. Bordering on full-blown noise at times, this piece had very little to do with jazz. At some points it even sounded like Sun Ra was trying to see how many keys he could press at once, creating a disorienting wall of sound. Not for the faint of heart.

remind myself to go back in time and punch july 2016 me for deciding to spend a grand on a college chemistry course when i don't know dick about chemistry

FAILED THAT FINAL BY A SINGLE QUESTION (PASSED WITH A CURVE THOUGH)

also fyi Byrds albums are really great to listen to during downtime in school when i should probably be doing work but fuuuuuuck i just don't care

The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! (1965)
>folk rock, pop rock

Definitely their weakest, at least from what I've heard so far. Some tracks are just flat-out terrible, their cover of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" is almost laughably meek and basically the sonic opposite of a protest song, and their rendition of "Oh! Susannah" is just really pointless. The band still has all their typical characteristics that I love (just the guitar, mainly), the drumming is shockingly wonderful, and the title track is a great pop song, but the rest of the actual songs are just really bland. If you have to skip any of their first four, skip this.

2.0+

might as well listen to the Notorious Byrd Brothers and Sweetheart of the Rodeo tomorrow, i wanna go through more full discogs, i'm really bad about that. prolly gonna go through Scott Walker soon.
