he's an inconsiderate cunt and insists on making constant noise. He taps his foot sings(horrible) like yodels and strums like a retard. Worst of all he won't even play simple shit like Mary had a little lamb. I even say, hey try to play something simple and master it. I'm pretty sure new musicians at least try to get good at that? He tries to play advanced or complex music and doesn't ever get better at it. It never sounds remotely close to the song he tries to play. If I say anything I'll hurt his feelings and make him angry.

So I am the one who wears headphones. But it's just not enough, I got a friend that tells me to buy sound curtains to block out my room. It's just excessive. I'm mostly ranting, I'm going insane, this is going on for almost 3 years now.

Hi pete

New vegas and 3 are so enjoyable for me because theyre still within some realm of reality. Both had some good mods, but the voice acting was done between 3 people in one closet, bew vegas bointies had some decent to great voice acting but it was really lofi. Skyrim though, all the voices(more like 95%) sound better than the official voice actors and the quests are more interesting. Ive played some shitty skyrim mods, but falskarr, forgotten city and helgen reborn are all incredible. Forgotten city is greay because everyone is voiced, sound different and the quality is good enough it doesnt break immersion. Helgen reborn is the same, but with better accents. The scwarzenegger allusion is hilarious and is only made better because he blends the accent to make it fit the rest of the character.

I've already got flatwounds (La Bella Deep Talking Flats 45-105) on a regular p bass. Knowing that, do you still recommend flats for my PJ? If so, any particular brand? And tell me about tapes, why do I have to be extra manly for them?
>>
>>70953923
They're harder to push down?
Honestly though, I don't think brand matters with bass strings, I've got fender tapes on mine right now, but I've heard LA Bella's are pretty good as well.

Just remember tone is in the fingers man, maybe you need new fingers instead

>>70955276
>>70955287

the 5 positions of the pentatonic are the skeleton shapes for everything
all other scales are just adding and subtracting a few notes
memorize the shapes and you have already mastered the hard part, assigning names to them as you transpose becomes easy
>>
>>70955276

Learning the way they're made is best. I just remember, for major scale for example, w - w - h - w - w - w - h (w = whole step, whole tone, 2 frets, h = half step, semi tone, 1 fret).

So for A major, we have A B C# D E F# G# A. Because B is a whole step from A, C# is a whole step from B (remember, B# = C), and D is a half step from C#. Then bam, we know the key signature of A major, know how to play it on guitar, and we know the notes that make up A major chord (I, III, V = A, C#, E. These are the three notes you play to make an A major chord. To play an A minor, just lower the third note of the scale, the C#, down a semitone. So A minor = A, C, E).

These rules are universal and apply to every major scale. Same with the minor scale too, of any minor scale, take notes I, III, and V, and there you have your minor chord in the key of I.
>>
>>70955421
This is all unnecessary bullshit that nobody cares about and it isn't fun. Memorize the shapes first.
>>
>>70955462
You're just lazy and not good as music
>>
>>70955474
*at
>>
>>70955462

You should certainly care about it if you're playing in a band. I'm just saying, if you understand the theory I posted, you can derive the shapes yourself, then just memorise that. Two birds, one stone. It's really not much to learn at all, especially when you're at the stage of learning scales.

A beginning player doesn't understand or care about any of this crap. The other guys were right, learn the scale patterns first, figure out what they mean later. As long as you can slide the scale shape into the right key you're good to go.
>>
What are some steps you guys use in moving away from the bedroom tone and into something that cuts in a mix and sounds great?

It seems like whenever I play around with the amp I either lose out on the chuggy low end, or the highs become so piercing it's fatiguing.
>>
>>70955778

It really depends, but typically what I'd do is get my ideal tone, and just record that. Mess with the EQ for the recorded track. Chuggy low end, you playing in B standard or something? I play in E standard with a Vox AC30 so I probably can't help you. But you should listen to some of your favourite tracks and be able to figure out how they get what they get.
>>
hey,/gg/ I've been playing electric guitar for several years and I have want to play something new. I would like to spent on 800 bucks on a acoustic or a bass+practice amp. I just want to play something different for fun. What do you think /gg/?
>>
>>70955589
This is why so many guitar players suck because you don't understand wtf you're actually doing so it makes you very inflexible musically
>>
>>70955827
I find the only way with my amp to retain the chuggy palm mutes is to either lose out on the other frequencies, or play C standard.

If I play standard tuning through my amp it just seems like way too much piercing high end, or becomes really weak and muddy when I try to bring back some of the girth to the tone.
>>
>>70955903

What amp do you have? Sounds like a problem with the amp. Do you have an EQ pedal?
>>
>>70955861
False equivalence. Knowing what you're doing musically doesn't equal better playing. Just listen to Steve Vai.
>>
>>70955929
Grandmeister 36. Seems like everyone I see using it has fantastic sound and the second I try their settings I'm utterly disappointed. It's like I get a whole different beast. Mind you I'm obviously not doing an SM57 full 36 watt recording like some of them are but still.

I don't currently have an EQ pedal, just an overdrive (Boss SD-1).

any guitars that are tonally similiar to the Custom 77 Roxy?
>>
>>70955995
It has a power soak, so I've tried 5 watt SM57 recording and the direct in redbox through my audio interface. The SM57 way definitely sounds best, but as I live with room-mates I can't crank it into the 18 watt/36 watt mode without sacrificing tone by having to dial back my master volume.

>>70956006
I'm using a Traynor 2x12 vertical cabinet with V30s. The top speaker's slanted slightly upwards, while the second is forward facing and about 6-7 inches from the floor.

This was about the happiest I could with the direct record (no EQing, just normalized and double tracked with 80% panning). http://picosong.com/rvbi/

The chuggyness is there with the C standard, but the notes just feel like they're lacking in something.

>>
>>70956102
Don't bother using the direct out on amp heads, it's always trash quality. I don't know why they even bother including them in the design.

Unfortunately good tone from tube amps needs volume. But you can still get an alright approximation using lower volumes. Having roommates makes it hard though, you'll still need to exceed quiet bedroom level without necessarily getting into earplug territory. Also don't forget a good mix for that kind of chunky distorted tone relies heavily on how the bass sounds. Guitars that sound like they lack body on their own can sound crushing in a mix with the right bass tone
>>
>>70956259
>Don't bother using the direct out
Yeah, I definitely agree that I prefer going without it. I've actually debated assembling a kind of isolation booth to try and allowing me to crank the amp louder without being a nuisance.

>Unfortunately good tone from tube amps needs volume
Yeah, kind of what I figured.

>A good mix for that kind of distorted tone relies heavily on how the bass sounds
So you're saying perhaps I'm a bit too critical of it simply because I'm not hearing it in a full mix?

You're not necessarily being too critical, just remember that the bass is going to be in the mix and will take care of a lot of the low end heaviness. Be more focused on getting the right bite you want and reigning back the fizziness rather than trying to get a boomy tone right away
>>
>>70956404
>Reigning back fizziness
What typically lends to fizziness though? I hear that term thrown around a lot. Is it the gain? Treble? Presence?

Keep in mind I also typically (for my standard tuned guitar) use a SH-4 JB pickup, which already seems constantly fizzy.
>>
ok let me ask again
should I learn to play bass or acoustic?
>>
>>70956634
how long are your fingers?
>>
>>70956507
Specifically recording tube amps at low volumes can cause more fizz than usual. Too much gain, treble, and presence will all contribute as well.
You can deal with it pretty well just with an EQ plugin. Use a low-pass filter to dial it back a bit. Then find a couple of the specific frequencies that cause the most hiss and pull them back (look up notch EQ tutorials if you're not familiar).

Its a Fender Bass VI, they don't make them every year. I think he was using ones from the 60s for a while. Squire makes some but currently Schecter makes the best ones.

I have the Hellcat VI, its pretty great. I usually play it through the bass amp for a nice clean but I believe Robert plays through the guitar amp.

Currently the hellcat VI has the single coils
THe Ultra VI has the mini humbuckers
and the ULTRACURE VI is what Robert plays.

The minihumbuckers are great, you can tap them and get the single coil sound anyway but if you wanted to go 'vintage' I think the hellcat looks better.

Great sound, but I'll say that its not the most exciting thing to play with out friends. Its good for filling up space in a song but not for jamming.

Question here, probably has been asked and answered a fuckload before, but I've been playing guitar since 2008, stopped from 2012 to 2015 and it became an on off thing due to life, and in 2016 I decided to actually pick it the fuck up and be somebody. Question here is, how do I de-blues my guitar playing? Every time I try to solo or improvise or fucking anything, it's just me butt fucking b.b. king. How do I escape that? Recommendations on what scales to learn, methods to approach, and whatnot? I've been told to pick up other instruments like piano or sax to get a broader understanding of music that isn't limited to guitar and that might help. Thoughts? Advice? Help?

I wouldn't recommend PRS but you're a retard if you think that. Paul Reed Smith is one of the finest luthiers in history, it just so happens his range lean more towards stylistic craftsmanship making them uncompetitive in the general market. Electronics/wiring/coating/general parts are all in house manufactured and they're very versatile guitars.

/gg/ just hate the inherent hipster identity that comes with paying extra for aesthetic.
>>
>>70958252
I think PRS is just as retarded as Gibson, and I think Gibson is just as retarded as Fender. If you pay more than about 1k for a factory build that they make thousands of then you're cucking yourself. Save the big $ for a luthier and customize every aspect of a guitar.

Ok, so im in a band where i tune to c# standard. My main for that is an ibenhad sooper strat. Its pretty nice, but i want a back up for live, and a second guitar to double track with.

Now, everything else i do is in standard, and for that i have a tele and an sg. I love them both, especially the sg. I really like the neck to body tansisition and how comfortable the neck is the whole way up it. I dont necessarily want to get another sg, but id like to find something that feels similar. It seems like a PRS would feel pretty similar, ive never been a fan of the body shape(same with the tele but that grew on me quickly).

Ive never seen a prs locally, so i would really have to do some searching and driving, but maybe someone here who has played both would be able to comment on how it feels compared to an SG, or recommend somethong else similar.

And i know gibson and prs are 2 of the hot new memes, im expecting to hear about that.
>>
>>70961211
it may sound weird but the flying V is probably the closest in feel to an sg. nothing else will give you the same type of fretboard access and comfort all across the neck.

I think there's a subtle flange effect going on, you can hear it pretty well around 2:32.

Other than that, try a chorus pedal like a Providence Anadime or Digitech Luxe to get that weird "detuned" sound.

What gauge strings should I get lads? I'm an amateur, and I'm only just beginning to get into solo/lead playing with a lot of string-bending (e.g. Smashing Pumpkins)

Look at pic related, and the number of reviews on each - it looks like 9 gauge is the most popular. Is this correct? Should I get that? I don't want my fucking strings to break in two seconds though

10 gauge are called "regular slinky" so that makes me think they're the regular/standard option so maybe I should get those?

What's the "average joe" gauge? The regular, the medium, the vanilla, the bog standard. That's what I'm after.

Dont bend your 3rd's or play the 4th, tritone, and fifth in one scale shape.

Look up diatonic major and minor scales and focus on using the notes note found in pentatonic scales as passing notes/melodic embellishment

Don't play over the 12 bar blues cause then it's obviously going to be a blues solo. Look at pop song chord progressions and maybe even "complex" time signatures

Maybe post some improv for /gg/ to listen to

Sorry, "...focus on using the notes NOT found in pentatonic scales..."
>>
>>70964555
You're completely over thinking this. You're not even looking at the right reviews those are specifically for a package of 10 gauges with extra picks. Just get the 10s.

That aint free. Get the same size as you already use so you won't have to setup the whole thing again.

So are 10s the "average joe" / most popular gauge?

>>70964817
I don't know what I already used because I haven't changed them in ages

Is 10 the standard? The most popular?

So im about to buy an Edwards guitar and cant decide between two. An hr145 or an mv125. One has a humbucker and single coil on a bolt on neck with a Floyd. the other is neck through with two humbuckers. I plan to set it up in drop D with heavy strings. Help me out here guys.

Really 9s are what most guitars are strung with at the store. 9 or 10s are probably the most common. I'd say 10 is the "average" size, because nobody realy goes lower than 8s. It's not like it's a permanent decision tho. Get the 10s and if you don't like them get 9s the next time. They'll feel really slinky afterwards.

Any advice for placement of pedals in my signal chain? Also, is it worth even having a compressor if I'm playing mostly heavier, shoegazey stuff?
Boss CS-3 -> ProCo Turbo Rat -> Boss DS-1 -> MI Audio Pollyanna Octave -> OBNE Procession -> Akai Headrush II -> EHX Holy Stain -> Hardwire TR-7 -> Joyo Tremolo

I've got a Squier Jaguar and it's great guitar, dickhead

I think my muscle memory is just terrible or something. Some people are naturally good at guitar.

I'm naturally terrible.

>I don't want my fucking strings to break in two seconds though

That's all about playing right. And possibly what kind of picks you use. AFAIK Billy Corgan barely touches his strings when he plays. He's all indie and shit.

But either way, 9s are durable enough if you already know how to play.

Is this a good amp?

Don't most amps generally sound the same in a live situation?
>>
>>70964555
I would get heavier string for better tone. Try 13s
It's what Stevie Ray Juan used

Practice moar. I was, too. Outta everyone i know, i seemed to be the worst while they all seemed to pick it up quickly. I just practiced more to be better. Now i kinda see while some of them are good, most of them just kinda suck it only seemed like they were 'good' cuz they were better than me at the time. Another portion of them that were good never got passed that initial goodness when they picked it up and it seemed easy. They weren't used to having to try and when it got difficult or to the point where they had to try to learn something, they didn't. Some said what they were trying to learn was "gay" and one in particular just plays garbage reggae chords now.
>>
>>70965435
No prob. Just remember there's no real rule to it. Just do what you think sounds good. I think he mentions that there
>>
>>70964898
Alright thank you for the advice m8.

>>70965293
He does some big bends, like a tone at a time.

Smashing Pumpkins aren't really "indie". The solos are intense. In my opinion.

This is the solo from Cherub Rock which I've been learning/playing recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0Ktw8KFezw

hey /gg/ here's my blog post

>not the greatest bassist
>know nothing of music theory
>nevertheless i'm thinking of playing guitar now
>worried about learning and memorizing all them chords jej
>jealous of the tones one can get out of those 6 stringed beasts

not going to buy some shitty beginner guitar to start with... it's a lot harder to play

can you guys recommend me a good model for a fair price telecaster?

i'll buy good pick ups later down the road to make it sound like those expensive models
