!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Aside from a couple of albums that were outside my wheelhouse, this was a pretty great chart!

Anthony Shake Shakir - Frictionalism
>Detroit Techno, Deep House

I've kind of been on a roll as far as longer albums go, with the Screw, Manhattan Research and Pelt recently. This isn't quite as long, clocking in at about an hour and a half, but it’s still longer than I’m used to. Anyway, the tracks on here are all a bit on the long side too but they're all great. The whole album has a techno vibe, with the rapid drum breaks and all. What separates it from most techno I’ve heard is the sampling. There’s more wavy synths and such bouncing in the background, giving this a very happy, upbeat vibe. It’s kind of a meld between what I’ve heard from house and techno, which was a surprisingly efficient combo.

I’m not sure how to write about electronic music but this was damn entertaining, some of the happiest danceable beats I’ve heard. Good shit all around.

Green Day - Dookie (1994)
>pop punk, punk rock

Pretty decently enjoyable album. The singles are really the only memorable tracks, but I'll be damned if "Longview" and "When I Come Around" aren't some of the most enjoyable pop tracks of the '90s. They're super poppy, but they've got some attitude and a genuinely punk sound, and the balance between pop and punk is done well. The non-single tracks are really damn forgettable, though. They're never bad, but all of them are interchangeable, there's nothing that distinguishes one from the other and the songwriting is pretty weak. Not a great album by any stretch of the imagination, but a fun listen.

Agreed. I would disagree that all the single songs are good though. "Basket Case" doesn't really do it for me. I really still like F.O.D and She to this day. 13-year old fish won't die.

If you want a darker dookie (hue) you should try out Insomniac. And though it's mostly shit, I think American Idiot is worth at least one listen, if not only for Jesus of Suburbia, which imo is one crowning achievement of an otherwise bad/mediocre band.

I started this today while waiting for tourney recs. elliott smith was wonderful. I feel like a lot of good stuff probably slipped under my radar, i'm sure it's a grower. green for now. the opener is lovely.

carrie and lowell is overflowing with sad but I like it. a lot.

>>
>>70934930
I feel like you probably won't have the 100% impact of E. Smith unless you hear him in your formative teenage years. If you want a more raw, simplified sound I'd recommend his earlier stuff and for a more orchestrated version with higher production I'd recommend anything after. Either/Or is a great starter album for anyone wanting to get into him. And Elliott Smith was the first thing I thought of when I first heard Carrie And Lowell. That album is surprisingly consistent.

Updated Yank Crime to a 4 because that album is awesome.

Also listened to Forca Bruta finally. I have to say, it's really easy listening and very enjoyable, but I don't know why everyone loves it so much.

While it might be a bit less consistently good than Yerself, Boces' highs are SO much higher than Yerself's highs. Meth of a Rockette's Kick is up there with my favorite all time tracks, and is much better than Chasing a Bee as an opener. Also, Something For Joey... 'nuff said.

Finals!
The Creator Has a Master Plan vs. Acustica, first part

This was a relatively simple decison, since I didn't like the latter at all, some of the sounds are just not that enjoyable to hear, and it doesn't help sticking alot of these together, I'm generelly not the biggest fan of experimentation with "random" sounds

On the other hand Pharoa Sanders was pretty good, not as good as I hoped, I'm still not really getting the appeal of jazz, but this had so much energy and a really strong delivery.

!wmxP/NHJxA had the better picks until the final but trip up ends up winning! Congratulations! Do you want a price or something?

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Under the Running Board (1998)
>mathcore

Boring mathcore. Tries very hard to be super manic and energetic but it ends up being really soulless and overly virtuosic. I like this band just fine but nothing about this is interesting at all, there are some cool guitar moments and as always I /love/ the drumming, but this is a pretty mediocre release as a whole.

Sorry for drunk-posting last night. I was playing 98.12.28 on my roomie's comp since he has better speakers, and I couldn't figure out how to turn the monitor off so I put a towel over it. He came in our room at midnight to find me passed out fully clothed and his computer towel'd.

ANYWAYS.

Listened to 10 albums in the past couple days and I liked four!

>Sun Ra - God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be
Probably one of the bluesiest (and best!) albums I've heard from the dude. I could say something I always do when I review jazz, like "x or x musician makes their instrument sound like many more due to their active playing" but this rings especially true when referring to Sun Ra's piano. A lot of really awesome syncopated riffs are present here. Avant-garde, but rarely as "free" as I've heard him go. And this actually isn't a bad thing, as the band explores a lot of unique ideas while still staying consistent and together. Very good.
8

>Mickey Newbury - Looks Like Rain
Just a really solid country/singer/songwriter album. Though, I fail to see what's "progressive" about this other than songs leading into each other sometimes. Perhaps it's the fact that not every instrument used here is "traditional", but this wasn't rare or anything for a country album made around the 70s. I'd list individual things I liked, but I think it's just as worth it to try it out yourself. Not a favorite for me yet, but I could see this being a grower on more listens.
7

>Quartet (Santa Cruz) 1993 - Anthony Braxton
If 2+hrs of free jazz sounds like your jam be my guest but I found myself bored rather quickly. The playing and ideas are very interesting, but not much for me here.

>Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots - s/t
Gothic country should probably be the best fucking genre in the world but it isn't. In fact, I've heard less than a handful of albums that are very good. I think it has something to do with the fact that the production and playing-style are very new-country, and very few aspects are of the "classic" world of country like they should be. I think it wouldn't be very hard to make an album in this genre which would be fucking perfect for me, but most of them, (including this one) fall JUST short. A few enjoyable tracks here or there, but nothing special.

This should be done in the next couple days then on to me new chart :DDD

>Retaliation
Peter Stelee's crossover thrash band also has a great sense of humour as displayed in the lyrics and themes of this album, and altough his sweet baritone is not really present in here, the angry yelling is much better suited for this kind of music. That is, fast and aggressive tracks dominated by rhythm and groove. Still, it's a style that gets old pretty quick. I think the lyrics are very unique and really make this stand out, but in the end I'm left with three or four standout songs and everything else is like worse versions them.
3/5

>Some Combinations Of Fingers And Passion
A solo piano album that combines classical and jazz styled playing, and while this may make you think of Jarrett or the Köln Concert, it isn't really like it in sound. Actually, the sound of this record is pretty difficult to narrow down because it keeps changing throughout. This seems to lean not only towards improvisation but also experimentation, and as a whole is a pretty diverse record that has a playful feel in it, full of different styles and imaginative, and a very interesting thing to listen to.

4/5 I think.

I'll contribute for this anon. Haunt Me was the first ambient album I ever listened to and it's glitchy, airy atmosphere is really amazing. It's not as dense and melodic as his later work but I think it holds its own wonderfully within his discography. The whole thing is like looking out on the coast of an alternate dimension. The Regis sample is a strange choice though.

Billy Bao - Urban Disease (2010)
>noise rock

Long periods of silence punctuated by some spastic, pretty terrible noise rock. Sometimes silence can be used to wonderful effect in music, but it's use here seems more like really extended pauses between tracks, it adds nothing yet it takes away /so/ much. When it decides to show up, the actual music itself isn't even that great. The band breaks into a brief afrobeat-esque jam at one point that serves as the album's sole shining moment, but the rest is just irritating, boring noise rock.

0.5

The Electric Toilet - In the Hands of Karma (1970)
>psychedelic rock, blues rock

Shockingly competent blues rock, especially shocking for an obscure band with a name like this. They flirt with some really over-the-top symphonic blues rock on a couple tracks, which is really cheesy and lousy, but the down to earth, rootsy tracks are pretty nice. The lyrics and songwriting are both very much based in americana, which I love, and the little psychedelic undertones are a nice touch. Pretty solid album.

Azymuth - Outubro (1980)
>jazz-funk, jazz fusion

This has got the early '80s written all over it. Head Hunters-esque fusion with a nice sheen of commercialism and cocaine. Cheesy as absolute sin (especially that synthesizer sound), and definitely repetitive, but it's good fun. I like when it quiets down and brings in more acoustic instrumentation to add to it's synthesizer-laden sound, and I like when it takes more influence from Brazillian music, but the standard cheesy synthesizer funk sound doesn't do much for me.

Yamir C. - Yamir (2016)
>ambient, post-rock

A nice balance of the harsh and dark and the ethereal. The airy drones are very, very pleasing, but a bit light and not very captivating on their own. They evoke wonderful, hazy images, but fail to really leave their mark. The more fleshed-out post-rock tracks are the album's highest points, especially when they're balanced with these ethereal drones. "The People Wanted to Know Why / Rain Serenade" is by far my favorite track on the album, it starts off with a sampled newsreel evoking images of war and conflict, and then a cannon fire sets off a rattling, harsh piece of industrial, the repeated snare hits sounding just like gunfire and the tremolo guitars nearly turning the whole track into a black metal track. The accompanying "Rain Serenade" is a beautiful little ambient folk piece, juxtaposing the harsh nature of it's preceding track perfectly. This track really is incredible, I can't heap enough praise on it. The rest doesn't really live up to these heights, save for the similarly dark "Compulsion", but this is still a very nice album. Will you guys (well, yamir doesn't come here anymore, but whatever) stop making good music? Gonna check out EthyBoy's album soon and see if y'all are really this fucking talented.

Bobby McFerrin & Jack Nicholson
The Elephant's Child, Recordings for the Children of Windham Hill
>Spoken Word, Children's Music, A Capella

I haven't heard another album that is so nice to listen to.

On Side A, Bobby McFerrin interprets Rudyard Kipling's "The Elephant's Child" into musical themes, which he performes a capella. Jack Nicholson narrates this story over top. I can't quite describe how this ends up so perfect, but this album manages to capture wonderful feelings in its children's "Story time!" style.

The Elephant's Child, of course, is a brilliant work of literature and Nicholson's narration is enthusiastic and creative. However, McFerrin's interpretations of Kipling's words really shine.

McFerrin takes phrases, single words or ideas from each section of Kipling's story and bends them into wonderful musical ideas beneath Nicholson's narration. He incorporates extended vocal techniques and all sorts of ways to expand on the narrative. He hisses when a snake is present, hambones when elephants are smacking each other up, it's all very playful, creative and bright.

On Side B, McFerrin takes several of the brief themes he performed beneath Nicholson's narration and pulls them into longer tracks. This 2nd half, without narration, functions as something like a musical denouement, re-stating and expanding themes. It works.

Truly, this album is pristine. It is just so nice to listen to. Feel good music of the highest regard, very unique and highly recommended. This album succeeds in its goal to entertain children (at least, I'm comfident it did), and captures something fresh and wonderful in doing so.

How the fuck aren't people sick of irony? Not really a response to this thread, but I'm reading this pitchfork article about how Father John Misty is talking about how he likes Nickelback. The dude claims to "hate the Internet" but the dude relies pretty much 100% on Internet-Age ironic content. Not just in his image, but in his lyricism too. Shit's boring imo.

On a semi-related note: recommend me some artists after the 90s that you think demonstrate aspects of new sincerity. Would be interested to see someone argue if any are/if any popular ones exist at all.

>The airy drones are very, very pleasing, but a bit light and not very captivating on their own. They evoke wonderful, hazy images, but fail to really leave their mark.
100% true, some of them just weren't intense enough. some were so not very captivating i even forgot what Jordan sounds like! not even joking, i even listened to it last week to try and remember and im still struggling to recall anything from it.

tpwtkw/rain serenade was such an achievement for me i wish i'd gotten the guy to record the drums better, easily my second best song. thanks for succ me off so much on that review. compulsion i disagree, man that was so clunky and everything was badly synchronized. that song took 6 months to make!

thanks for that review, i was having a terrible day and it put a smile on my face. :)

who is this dude lmao he's funny
>>
>>70951894
yeah I'm cool with liking his music (my gf likes him quite a bit) but

>>70951916
idk the 5 dollar words and snappy remarks get old after a bit, especially since the dude has such a boring rockist attitude towards everything. Add that with heavy focus on lyricism and blatant refusal to expand his horizons and you have probably one of the most useless critics out there. Scaruffi's complete ignoring of lyrics makes a much

And like aqam says, his contradicting biases makes him harder to read the more you hear from him. At least with Christgau, I understand the hype, as he was one of the first major rock critics to do so in that fashion.

I think he was trying to sound pretentious as an allegory for the album duh. He's a *next level* reviewer like that.
>>
>>70951986
>isn't trying to be honest kind of counterproductive
how? Have you had an emotion lately? Are your sentiments about enjoying Liturgy honest?

Also, borrowing concepts from ideologies you don't even believe in is the biggest poseur thing I can possibly think of.

>>70952003
>year is wrong
>uses one of the worst songs as his example
>opinions is wrong
wow who woulda thought.

notice how he talks entirely about the concept and 0% about the music. This would be only useful to circlejerk about my own opinion had I written the review, not to convince someone to listen or not listen to an album, thus rendering him 100% useless as a critic.

I think it's much harder to try and be anything else but honest, which for most people comes naturally. At least, in my experience.

Rare Grooves Chart.jpg

alright yknow what i'm just gonna put the lists chart on hold and go full stop on this

Maranata - Maranata (1978)
>jazz fusion

Alright, pretty glad I got the fusion out of the way early. I like my fusion a lot more rooted in jazz than this, or at least heavier and rockier than this, this is just a very sterile, poppy take on jazz fusion that doesn't sit well with me. The title track with its harmonica solo is really cool, but every other track has a lot of garish instrumental choices that really stand out in a negative way, and the songs themself aren't terribly great to begin with. The sampleability is off the charts though, and "Le Lis" is a pretty damn great song, I love the keyboard work.

2.0+

Tribo Massáhi - Estrelando embaixador (1972)
>batucada

Some of the more western influences like the funk bass might be a bit out of place, and every song might sound basically the same, but this is the fucking /sound/. The vocals are passionate as all hell, the percussion is heavy, and the atmosphere is legitimately oppressive and suffocating, this is much darker than I was expecting. That's all for the better, the whole album sounds like an incredibly passionate, fire-and-brimstone church service, and if that's not cool as hell, I don't know what is.

3.0+

>>70952251
but as a deliberate rejection of irony that's essentially what new sincerity is, actively trying to be honest

i don't know him and i don't think HHH ever talked about foster-wallace but the sense i get from all his work and his interviews and stuff is that he's unapologetically serious and hellbent on going through with any of his crazy ideas even if they're going to be turned into an ironic joke, so i would guess it's related to it even though he's far from the pseudo-confessional subject matter i'd typically associate new sincerity with
but at the same time TAW is pretty pomo

>>70952505
I mean he did have that rap song on TAW that conceptially feels like it should be dripping with irony, but I didn't get that sense at all. He definitely fully commits to his ideas in a sincere way. I've read some interviews of him talking about transcendentalism or whatever it's called, and I get the sense that he's absolutely serious.
