The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Just gonna do a handful of short reviews cuz I have to get to work on a compsci proj :/

Cows' Cunning Stunts' first track was incredible. Seriously one of my favorite. I'm not sure if the tracks actually get worse as the album progresses or if it just loses its flair very fast. Either way enjoyable less and less as it went on.
7

>Aesop Rock - Labor Days
Sure his flow and lyricism are good but who cares? The production is really just a step above mediocre boombap, nothing else. Most enjoyable when it gets more abstract, less so when it feels the need to stick to "roots". Still enjoy his newest album the most out of anything I've heard from him.
6

Manhattan Research Inc.: New Plastic Sounds and Electronic Abstractions is over two hours of really pleasant electronic experiments that are surprisingly accessible. As the compilation progresses, it moves from quirky product placement ads to really fascinating experiments, the former just as enjoyable as the latter, honestly. HIghlights were "Lightworks", "Limbo: The Organized Mind", "When Will It End?", and "Night and Day".
8

And the second track on this Jim O'Rourke album is one of his bests.
7

I'd be happy to elaborate on any other scores later if needbe.

What next?

>>70848905
how often does other people's enjoyment of music hinder your own? Very?

Alright Nat, I'll finish this chart eventually. Didn't realize I chose multiple two hour albums, damn.

[1/2]

Thee More Shallows - A History of Sport Fishing
>Slowcore, Indie Rock, Post-rock

A gorgeous little intersection in the slowcore/post-rock/etc realm. It’s filled with these mellow slow-building tracks, with whiney, almost whispered vocals. Instrumentally, it’s basically what you’d expect from an album of this style - soft guitar, paced/cyclical drumming… etc. There’s also some string arrangements on a few of them that give this whole album a dramatic, emotional, feel - which I’ve grown to like in rock. Paired with the vocals, it all works to create a great atmospheric listen.

The only issue I have with this style is the songs start to blend together. They’re all gorgeous and the album has an incredibly cozy, relaxing (albeit melancholy) vibe. Yet no real song feels like a standout or struck me more than the next. Despite all that, it’s quite consistent and enjoyable.

Sequentia - Canticles of Ecstasy
>Hymns, Gregorian Chant

Nice little collection of old school latin chants. If it weren’t for this drone, I definitely wouldn’t have checked this out - I usually have no interest in this style. However, I did enjoy this a surprising amount. Everything about this album felt absolutely cold. There’s all sorts of medieval sounding instruments on here, from organs to fiddles and harps. Most of them are used in droning, repetitive fashion in the background and as a result, this comes off as minimalist and simple.

Despite being very spiritual and holy, it comes off as creepy to me. For some reason, I feel like this should be used at the climax of a horror movie or something, it just has that vibe. I might return to this to see if my opinion changes, or throw it on in the background while reading/writing.

While this is oddly striking - it does get old after a while. Hearing this stuff in latin is cool but the lack of instrumental diversity is a bit of a minus. Very interesting listen, I’m glad I got out of my comfort zone and checked this out.

rutracker has most things in decent quality BUT MAKE SURE IT HAS THE ORIGINAL AUDIO INCLUDED (unless one Russian guy dubbing it is up your alley)

If you want high quality new releases PTP or BTN (private trackers, hard to get into)

If you want hard to find arthouse Karagarga (very hard to get into)

If you want obscure Asian movies then AsiaTorrents or whatever it's called now, I think you can get into it fairly easily

You can literally just sign up for rutracker without any effort whatsoever. The interface is in Russian, but it's the same as every other tracker in the world otherwise. And it's exceptionally difficult to get kicked out of (you would have to download 50+ GBs a day and seed none of it), and if you somehow manage that they don't really care if you just sign up again.

The private tracker meme was much easier a couple months ago when what.cd was still around (;__;) because you could interview to get in and a ton of people recruited from it. Now you either have to start with MyAnonamouse (book tracker, very easy and friendly, lets basically everyone in as long as they're nice) or PasstheHeadphones (what.cd revival project, but it's a bit stricter).

Thanks to ~thomasstc for telling me about this.

Jim O'Rourke - 27/6/2000 (Meltdown Festival, London RFH) (2000)
>art pop, jazz pop

Live O'Rourke, the tunes and performances are obviously immaculate, but the very obviously bootleg-quality recording hurts the sheer quality of the performance. The music is probably the perfect cross between the pop of Eureka and Halfway to a Threeway and the drone of O'Rourke's earlier works, with the pop structures of incredible songs like "Fuzzy Sun", "The Workplace", and "Women of the World" combined with the free-flowing, lengthy nature of drone. Brass improvisations are commonplace, and they add a lot to the already wonderful tracks. Some of the much longer tracks go on for too long, losing the pop sensibilities that made them such classic tracks in the first place, replacing these sensibilities with repeated melodies and phrases that get a bit old. Barring these little issues and the muddiness of the recording, it's prime pop O'Rourke with brass improvisations and heavy drums, how could you go wrong?

Secret of Kells is great, and Song of the Sea by the same studio is also super unchecked. Also, if you liked the animation style of Coonskin I would heavily rec Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic.

I gave Penis Envy and Yes Sir, I Will both 9s, I'll be rating their other three albums probably within the week.

Really bummed they don't seem to have any other material outside of their studio albums that seems worth trying out. Those are always my favorite to do when discovering an artist I super dig.

>But all I know is that the only good song off Im Wide Awake was Road to joy
Thought this album was bomb dot com in high school, but I would say the best song by far is Poison Oak. The rest is kinda generic-tumblr-core I'd have to say. I need to stop revisiting stuff I liked from Freshman year because frankly it depresses me.

seriously though I would rec hearing MF DOOM's first two albums as well as his side projects. How much Wu Tang have you heard? That ODB album, Liquid Swords, and some of Ghostface's early solo stuff but that's it. Maybe you'd also like Giles Corey's s/t and Long Season by Fishmans? Also, Iron and Wine's Woman King EP is the best thing the dude has done.

>Do you do 25 albums on all your charts?
not, it's totally whatever I feel like. one was Björk's discog, one was Black Pus' discog, so they were short, one was 50 albums, and many were 30-ish, since they were old fashioned /daily/ album-a-day calendars (pic related is one of two calendars I did in February 2015. I did one calendar of LPs that month, and one of EPs. So it was two records a day).

gotta digest this don cherry but oof it's something else

Apollo Brown - Clouds (2011)
>instrumental hip hop

Unobtrusive little beat tape. Brown's a pretty skilled producer, but all of his beats would definitely improve if they were put behind a more skilled rapper rather then left alone, he's got talent but not enough talent to let his standalone beats be that interesting. Some killer tracks, like "Heart of Glass" and "Bridge Through Time", but I'm left feeling a bit cold with this.

2.0+

Fair score for your rating system t b h. It's probably one of my most listened to hip-hop albums, I studied/wrote with that in the background like nonstop for a semester. I'm just a sucker for soul beats.

Glad you dug the Don Cherry, looking forward to the writeup!

>>70855060
Yeah, it's one of the best hip-hop albums I've ever heard. I usually don't like concept albums or longer listens but it's so damn consistent.

>>70855100
>what did you think of coloring book

Pretty solid overall. I dug the gospel/neo soul influence because it was so uplifting. Great singles too, I still come back to "Angels" and "All Night" every so often.

But honestly, it wore on me after a while, the production feels kind of glossy and... manufactured? I remember going back to Acid Rap consistently for like a year after I discovered it because the production felt so unique. Didn't really get that with Coloring Book.

Probably his second best project, despite its flaws.

It has very unique, I'd say ethereal melodies for its genre that haven't really been replicated. I understand why people say the production sounds dated but I think it's only improved with age - its an intricately layered portrait of a specific moment in time.

I was really surprised by this one after the disappointing Ascension. Don Cherry - Eternal Rhythm (1969)
>free jazz

More maximalistic that Cherry's earlier works, but even more disjointed and free, which is a pretty awesome thing. The gamelan influence is lovely, Cherry closes out the first part with a gamelan-influenced flute solo, and the general tribal atmosphere produced by the whole record and the group interplay of it is very reminiscent of the style. This first part is by far the more disjointed of the two, with the band rarely ever finding any collaborative footing, but they're playing such amazing things and the pure chaos brought upon by them is palpable, it's controlled chaos at it's finest. The second part is a bit more structured, rooted more in funk and fusion and it's proabably the part of the piece I prefer more. Sharrock's guitar takes on more of a leading role, which I adore, and it switches gears from a very percussion-intensive sound into a more spiritual, melodic sound with ease, completely mastering both of these styles on the opposite end of the spectrum. What can I say, I love Don Cherry.

3.5-

Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay (1970)
>soul jazz, post-bop

Damn pleasant without ever becoming uninteresting or bland. The two tracks in the middle are definitely lesser than the incredible opener and closer, and the album definitely lacks any real punch, but the instrumentalists here are all at the top of their game and the melodies and solos all go down super easy. Hubbard's trumpet work is commendable, but Hancock's melodic keyboard lines and White's tight, funky drums are worthy of praise too, especially White's take on the drums that leads the band into a more funk-based territory that gives some of the pieces, especially the wonderful title track, a big boost. Good stuff.

Cerebral Ballzy - Cerebral Ballzy (2011)
>hardcore punk

Probably among one of the worst records I've ever heard. Watered-down hardcore for the Adult Swim masses that takes any of the energy and aggression out of the genre but still keeps all of its irritating characteristics and amplifies every single one of them ten fold. The vocalist is snotty but he's got absolutely no conviction, the guitar tone is weak, the drummer is just fucking terrible, this is an odious goddamn album.

Nice, I'm doing well despite a few duds. Glad you liked Eternal Rhythm - it's fucking phenomenal. That mellow, bluesy section toward the middle/end of part two absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it.

Couldn't agree more about Red Clay either, great lineup and I just love every early Hubbard album.
