Happy birthday Rudi!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

I apologize for my limited knowledge of future garage, but this just sounded like a more boring version of Burial's Untrue (with a little hiphop sprinkled on top). Every time there started to be a really cool idea developing, the song would either stop abruptly or a really poor/lazy idea would be thrown into the mix. Not bad, just messy.

A 2-hour long album is a lot to digest. I much preferred the classical-type pieces a lot more than the others. A lot of this album just felt like really average ambient, while the rest was actually very noteworthy. I feel bad giving it this low of a score because of how good some of parts of this is.

UGK - Ridin' Dirty (1996)
>gangsta rap, dirty south, southern hip hop

You don't even need me to tell you how fucking good "One Day" is. It's probably one of the best hip hop tracks of all time, the hook is incredible, the beat is soulful but still gritty, and it has my favorite single line in hip hop history with "AK loaded as I get swallowed under city lights" provoking more imagery than pretty much any other line I've ever heard, I get chills hearing it. The rest isn't as great, mainly because the production is a big basic, it's that same kind of soulful southern stuff that's been done to death. It's done really well here, but something about it doesn't really grab me at all. Luckily, the MCs are both awesome, with Bun B and the late Pimp C turning in some really amazing performances, so I can forgive some of the major qualms I have about the production. I don't like it as much as I thought I would, but it's still a damn solid album.

3.0-

Tut - Preacher's Son (2015)
>jazz rap, conscious hip hop, southern hip hop

This definitely seems like a mixtape that's been done before. It's very nondescript, the beats fall into that semi-cloudy, jazz rap category that's been done a lot lately, and Tut really lacks a personality as both a rapper and a lyricist. He's set apart by his focus on religion and his gruff voice, but nothing about him stands out, him and the whole album really don't make any sort of real impression. I really do quite like the production when it doesn't fall into some overlong ambient-esque sections, though, it's very spiritual but it never forgets to bang, especially during the hooks, which are the album's real standout. Tut may not be the most memorable rapper, but the fucker and his various features do some damn good hooks. I like it, it's a solid mixtape that sadly fails to be engaging at all, especially with how long it is.

2.5+
>>
>>70916317
Aw man, I was hoping that Tut tape might be a sleeper 3.0. The live jazz production is definitely some of my favorite on any hip-hop project.

Also, the first half of Ridin Dirty is incredible, that stretch from the intro to "3 In The Mornin" is one of my favorite in the genre.

Thanks for doing the drone! I'm just happy there weren't any 0.5s haha

Lusine Zakarian - Armenian Spiritual Music
>Hymns

The second spiritual/hymn-based album I’ve heard off Nat’s drone and it’s certainly the more entertaining of the two. Unlike Canticles of Ecstasy, which actually gave off a bit of an eerie vibe, this is just endlessly beautiful. It’s quite simple, with Zakarian belting out old latin church songs in a massive opera soprano. This isn’t what I’m accustomed to - and although I’d consider myself a fairly spiritual person - I don’t ever dig into this style of music.

The simplicity of this album is really the main draw. It’s just Zakarian singing, accompanied by a church organ - and it’s incredibly touching. There’s no distractions and it certainly adds to the spiritual element. You’re honed into the moment, focused on something powerful and passionate.

Hearing the organ kind of reminded me of a recent funeral and it brought forth a lot of memories and emotions. In a weird way, that experience was soothing and that’s kind of the great thing about music. For that alone, I’m glad I checked this out.

Anyway, I hesitate to give this a full 4 because I don’t see myself returning too often - but it’s a great piece of music. Definitely impacted me more than I was anticipating.

okay wtf this isn't even that bad. It's probably one of the best Gothic Country albums ever, which is a genre I keep wanting to succeed and find great music in but it just ends up being far too chamber-folk-y. This does the genre incredibly well.

However, I can totally see why it's so often hated. When put against Swans' studio discography it really sticks out like a sore thumb, especially considering it's sandwiched between two of their defining "era" albums and what some would consider their best: "Children of God" and "White Light".

I think taking this as its own album is maybe a bit challenging for any Swans fans (something it hasn't been cool to be for a while) but tracks like "God Damn the Sun" are seriously some of their best.

Thoughts? Cuz y'all are thots!!!!!!!

Amazing, considering I haven't listened to Psychocandy for like 2 years. Thoroughly Enjoyable Listen™. Is it your least favorite because it doesn't fit into the rest of the album well?

>>70924572
Enjoyable hypnagogic pop(?) with a very earnest sound. That said, the mid-point of the song drags on, leaving a little something to be desired. Not for too long, however, because it launches into a very nice harmonica solo. The song itself also deals with something that hits close to home for me: I, too, wonder about settling down and about whether my current situation is good enough for me.

Ultimately, I think that the musical winner is JMC but the lyrical winner here has to be Sondre Lerche. If this post ends in an odd number, JMC wins. Otherwise, Sondre will win.

>>70924632
It doesn't have to be the "worst" but rather the "least good" track

I'm usually a big fan of shoegaze and blackgaze, but this really isn't doing it for me :/. The use of repetition can definitely used to a song's advantage (case in point: disco) but in this case, the uninteresting chords sound muddy and samey, and definitely not in a charming or good way. I had to skip through the song a couple of times to check if it changed chords or anything. Either it's a boring song or I'm a huge pleb.

>>70924689
The spoken word intro on the track reminds me of the Clientele a little bit. The second half of the song is much more sonically intriguing than the beginning. I like this much more than the Liturgy track.

ducktails' wish hotel was boring. never mind the buzzcocks.

transsy's rec was another thing in a style I don't really like but it was still good.
I expected boring psych from brian jonestown massacre, as recommended by ARE, and I got good songs.

jimmy jazz recommended this weird, internet-age collage of death grips influenced beats and nonsense trendy buzzword spoken word. pretty cool actually, but it's too disjointed. some of it is funny and the beats are really good at bits but they don't develop anything. imagine walking into an ice cream store, they let you sample some things, and then they close before you can get a cone.

the junipers, as recommended by triangle, are a beatle-ish band that is similar to Baddest Beams but not nearly as good

dogwander recommended the new NIN. I only knew "animal" and the music he did with atticus ross for the social network. this ep was good but i'm not interested in listening to any more NIN.

ethyboy's iron & wine rec was comfy but something about it just doesn't quite gel perfectly with me. as I mentioned before, the melodies are a bit lacking.

round 3 is ethy, are, triangle, & pom
check that restriction

this is his last transmission to me:

>We've been recording and I'm not liking how they are sounding, currently. We don't have access to the keyboard I thought we would have access to! That tape looks nice, but I don't want the demos released as a product. What I'm thinking is that the most I can do right now, and do well, is record I Wanna Marry You as a single and then used the demo as a b-side or another recording from this session as the b-side and figure it out from there. All of this won't come together as soon as I'd have hoped. The songwriting comes quickly, but the arrangements, recording, and satisfactory outcomes of both take time. We have some good arrangements, but I don't want to rush them for the sake of just putting out a product. So, I'm proposing: no demos tape, a single for release by Jan, and an album date now TBD.

I understand taking a month, two months, even three months to develop and record an album on your own. But keeping me in the dark about it? It just feels like a slap to the face in my eyes.

slightly aggressive. i get the annoyance, but it's just going to make you unappealing to work with again if you use shit like "time investment." if he doesn't get the message with just you messaging, he won't get it at all.
try and space it out as well. don't do the whole paragraph at once. start with "hey justin, are you there?" and build slowly over a few days to "i'll see what i can get out of the demos if you're still unavailable. we can work it out if you get back to me."
also check if there's any other way to contact him.
it's a game of patience i know, but waiting is half the job. it can feel shitty to be ignored, but don't rush.
>>70926906
and do definitely do this. it might just not be clear you want him to keep him posted.
>>
>>70926943
ok god bless. I'm not even sure if he sees these messages anymore. He hinted in another channel that he might be quitting the internet, so I'm not sure if that's what he's done or if he even cares about the label anymore. I've got other stuff lined up, but honestly nothing on his level. I could see him becoming bandcamp-core or even sub-mu-core

Friendly PSA, daily reminder.

There's an increasing divide between the talentless tasteless poseurs of mu and the actually involved art fans.

Generally;

Poseur: RYM, /daily/, /rym/, lastfm or people that post in "rate taste" threads, /chart/, (very strong emphasis on these), /classical/, (flavor of the month circlejerk) mu discord

Cool guys: /prod/, /bleep/, /gg/

Reminder again: if you don't ever play or make music, never find better ways to get involved with this stuff- if all you do is name-drop and talk about the "uncommon time signatures" and "experimental" side of rym shit on mu discord all day, you're a poseur and TALENTLESS MERE CONSUMER and need to leave. If you're the kind of person that Google's "impressionism" and talks about "avant compositions" on RYM but has never even picked up an instrument, a noose to the neck is the only cure.

>B-but le you don't need to make art to critique it xD

That's true, but your opinion matters alot less as you have no talent and experience and treat music like a damn product you consume and not interact with. Your hundreds of thousands of ratings on RYM mean absolutely nothing to someone that actually likes music or art, it just means you're a tryhard image oriented poseur.

Got a bit ahead of myself on the calendar

[1/2]

DJ Screw - June 27th

Not only does he manage to make a Bone Thugs song sound even more menacing, he also makes a TRU track sound kind of good. You can’t even tell that it has a garbage Seinfeld-y bass riff or that most of the MCs are pretty mediocre. That’s an accomplishment in itself. Beyond that, it has some dope remixes of 2pac, Too Short and Ice T on here.

The biggest accomplishment of this album, however, the absurdly lengthy freestyle, “Da Streets Ain’t Right”, which clocks in at almost 40 minutes. It’s a little much and probably about 10 minutes longer than it deserves to be - but it’s surprisingly entertaining. Big Moe is awesome at singing a hook and paired with the classic Houston Screw beat, he helps keep this song coasting along. I hadn’t even heard of half these guys but the Screwed Up Click obviously has some great freestylers. Awesome track and the rest ranges from okay to great.

Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Live and Let Die

Kool G Rap is supposed to be one of the original gangsta rappers from the east coast but I barely heard that influence on his first album. It’s filled with Big Daddy Kane-esque raps and lighthearted, entertaining beats provided by Marley Marl. Honestly, it’s exactly what you think of when you hear “80s rap”. A little cheesy but still entertaining.

On Live and Let Die, however, he’s obviously drawing from different influences. It has a very hardcore mentality, with more chaotic, Bomb Squad kind of production that sounds west coast. Instead of that “golden era” sound, this sounds more like a Geto Boys or PE record. There’s lots of screeching horns, funk guitar riffs and Scarface/Godfather kind of samples thrown in. Kool G has definitely improved as an MC, he’s angrier and has a tighter flow. He sounds like a weird morph between Scarface and 2Pac, with a little bit of an old school vibe thrown in. Certainly impressive for ‘92.

That being said, I can’t stand this production. I love the concept, not gonna lie. I remember reading that Chuck D heard “hip-hop is just noise”, so he tried to make the most chaotic, noisy production possible to rub it in people’s faces. Kind of what ends up happening during parts of this album and I really don’t like it. It honestly just clashes with the rapping, I can’t deal with it. Also, does every hardcore rap album have to include an uncomfortable track about sex? “Operation Cb” just shouldn’t have been made - yikes.

Anyway, enjoyable but not exactly my style.

the Biz Markie song triangle picked is pretty fucking stellar. right away, a sing-along favorite.

ARE picked some anime song. instrumentally it was real solid but I didn't care for the dramatic, operatic vocals.

ethyboy's pick, I was familiar with but never heard it all the way through. glad I did, it's lovely.

I was also familiar with pom's pick, but also never heard it all the way through. definite meme quality, this is not my beautiful mouth and I must scream etc. etc. tb.h. , :0 and the rest. i'd like to hear a hip-hop mix of this, the beat is pretty nice. but i'm definitely not any more interested in the talking heads.

so, round 4. I need an LP from triangle and Pom

Any post that begins with "daily reminder" or "reminder that" can be safely ignored

>There's an increasing divide between the talentless tasteless poseurs of mu and the actually involved art fans.
invented scenario

the people in "rating" threads are entirely self-contained until you the outsider come along to validate them. Nobody here considers themselves a poseur, let alone a critic, and I certainly hope nobody here considers their opinion to have any substantial worth outside of similarly insular communities. Very few people in these threads spend any time outside them

On top of that, most people in these threads are also either involved in their local music scene, play an instrument, record music, or maintain a tape or net label

music that is released to a mass market is a product, which you can still "interact with" whatever that means

/mu/ is not some elitist society for artists—most communities of any sort are 99% consumer

why are you so angry, this PSA is not at all friendly

yeah pom i'm def gonna need links to most of these

Pedro Santos - Krishnanda (1968)
>psychedelic folk, samba

Not much in the way of true songwriting, which makes the vocal songs a bit formless and the album a bit unobtrusive, but the instrumental tracks are wonderful. They're very groovy but they've got some sinister, dark undertones, something that's exemplifies by the exotic instrumentation and the repetitive structures. The sampling potential here is also unparalleled, even if the album itself might have a few spells of boredom, because the grooves and drums on this thing are just that good. Great start to these rare grooves.

3.0

José Prates - Tam... Tam... Tam...! (1958)
>batucada

The percussive elements of this are amazing, that's what batucada is all about and the complete walls of heavy percussion that make up the best tracks on this album are great. The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are too bombastic, and not in the really awesome way the percussive tracks are bombastic. Something about them rubs me the wrong way, I don't like the male vocals and they take away from the pure energy exhibited by the percussion. They really hurt the album, but the half of it that's firmly based in percussion is great.
