The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Tommy Wright III - On the Run (1996)
>memphis rap, gangsta rap

Even memphis wasn't immune from the bizarre trend of mid-'90s hip hop albums being over an hour long. For as much as I absolutely adore the memphis rap sound in every way, it can easily get played out over long periods of time, but Wright is a skilled enough producer and a vicious enough rapper to keep things interesting. It's at the same time the scariest and most humorous memphis rap album of all time. Wright's bars and delivery are genuinely intimidating, but he's got a penchant for dark, absurd humor, and the samples generally lighten the mood a lot. Production sometimes stagnates, but this is the most modern sounding memphis album I've heard, it's almost indistinguishable from modern trap, save for how lo-fi it is, a fact that I adore. He might be intimidating, but Wright does well by passing a lot of the MCing onto featured artists, who are fucking incredible, Tinimaine and La' Chat especially. Overlong, but a damn fine memphis album nonetheless, and one of the best gangsta rap albums I've ever heard.

Litku Klemetti - Juna Kainuuseen (2017)
>indie pop, lo-fi indie, psychedelic pop

Nice, brief pop album. The comparisons to a Finnish Ariel Pink are pretty apt, the dreamy, hazy atmosphere is very reminiscent of a lot of hypnagogic pop, but this album is a lot more urgent and rock-based, with fuzzy guitars and nice garagey drums abound. The songwriting is lacking, a lot of songs fail to make any mark, and most of them just feel like half-baked ideas rather than fully fleshed out songs, but I like this a decent bit.

2.5+

Julie Byrne - Not Even Happiness (2017)
>contemporary folk, chamber folk, singer/songwriter

Not much to say about this one. It's a standard singer/songwriter album you'd see in a Starbucks, but Byrne is a nice guitar player and a wonderful, intense singer. Her vocals and guitar skills with more interesting songwriting and a less played out aesthetic would be wonderful, but this album is so incredibly generic. Nothing bad about it, but there's nothing good or memorable about it either.

Pretty shitty however that my entire team got sick so we can't participate in the student union quiz this thursday. I've really acquired a taste for quizzing.

Aye. Both remaining albums were nice. Disillusion had good riffs and I liked the death metal influences, though I found the vocals pretty mediocre. And Holdrejtek on the other hand had some pretty great ones but the record suffered from being pretty similar throughout. It'd be nice if they added more elements to their songwriting I guess. I was thinking of checking out Rego Rejtem which is also tagged as neofolk. Thoughts on that one?

Let me tell you first off, great work man. Overall, this album was very enjoyable and solid all the way through.
Your songwriting skills are top notch. You can really carry a strong melody.
And I loved how you nailed that early 70's singer songwriter vibe almost to a tee. Both in the singing and guitar playing.
Speaking of which, your guitar playing is pretty damn good on this record. I heard maybe one or two slight flubs, but you're already leagues ahead of your average joe shmo folk artist.
And your voice is really pretty (I just wish I could hear it more!)

Things that could be improved:
Like I mentioned, the vocals could really use a boost. You've got a really nice voice, and I think if you bring it up more in the mix it would have 10 times the impact it does now.
Just in general, the whole record would sound way better if you got it recorded in a proper studio.
A good production job could get rid of those squeaks and clear up your vocals + give them some more bottom.
And the last thing I noticed I was craving was some intensity!!
The last track is gorgeous, but right around the middle it needs to start building, or growing, or changing in some capacity.
I applaud your songwriting skills, but I have to admit I was getting a little bored during that section. It's just a bit too flat.

I thought you did a grade A job otherwise, be proud.

Minimalism is becoming one of my favourite genres of music. Pic related is my favourites so far (as you can see I'm a big Reich fan); does anyone have any recommendations based on these?
I'll say that most of the time, I'm more interested in the minimalism that has complexities in melody and rhythm, as opposed to the droning minimalism, though as can be seen in the chart I do appreciate some of that style too.

Paul Kelly is good, but really Australian to the point of being alienating to foreigners
Kev Carmody is p good, very political, deals with Aboriginal rights, more like a poet than anything
The Drones are alright
Dirty Three I've recently discovered are fantastic
Crowded House is classic, even if Neil Finn is technically New Zellund, he expatriated at a young age so we get to call him Strayan
Cold Chisel is fucking HUGE here, Jimmy Barnes is a national treasure
Dead Can Dance are apparently Australian?
Midnight Oil is also classic, Peter Garret was at one point the federal Minister for Education

I listened to some music, first month is over, I'm kinda surprised this works so well so far. Even a few albums ahead.

some short thoughts

>Uniform - Wake in Fright
I would have absolutely loved this a couple years back, still like it pretty much, it's in-your-face, loud, heavy noise rock, even tending towards metal in some parts.

>Myra Davies - Sirens
A new thing from Gudrun Gut, which is always good, she teasm up with Beate Bartel here and delivers the music for Davies' texts, solid, refereshing little record

>Ethan Chandler - Rituals
Yeah, this was alright, it's just entirely not my style, singer/songwriter, solo-guitar never really gets me, for that it was actually quite nice, since the voice is super lovely and calming, as others said, it should be higher in the mix

The Haino EP is from 2016 I noticed, will be corrected in next update

>Love Devotion Surrender

Great musicianship, alright music. I can't seem to get into fusion that's more on the rock side. The album starts with two of Coltrane's compositions, A Love Supreme and Naima. The Love Supreme version is heavily centered on both guitars, which sound out of a Mahavishnu Orchestra record, very alike in style and overall not too reminiscent of Coltrane's music. On top of that, rather than an acoustic piano, you have Larry Young playing the organ for extra 70s fusion sound. But then comes Naima, a complete change in style. A bare sounding acoustic version, but still a powerful track and my favorite from this record. After that, the record returns to two guitars jamming stuff in The Life Divine. The track also incorporates some vocals similar to the ones from A Love Surpeme (it's still after all a record influenced and dedicated to Coltrane, despite sounding pretty different) but not much more. Then comes a fifteen minute track full of more fast and bombastic guitar solos I really don't care about, but go on for long enough to be tiring. Thinking about it makes me not want to revisit this for some time. And then it closes with another short acoustic track, Meditation, that does more in two minutes than the previous one did in fifteen.

One of the more unique approaches to Coltrane's music and spiritual sound, but not one I found particularly enjoyable. Larry Young's organ is pretty nice on this too, but the focus on the album seems to be on Mahavishnu and Santana and their guitars.

2.5/5 I guess (now with picture).

>Zendik Farm Orgaztra - Danze of the Cozmic Warriorz
>proto-psychedelic

A 60's art community project featuring a unique instrument (8 string instrument that is cross between a sitar and guitar) and plenty hippie babble. The music comes off as a intriguing look into early psychedelic where it was very much just arty young people getting together and dropping acid, seeing where the music takes them. The freak-out moments are the highlight of the album, hypnotic and a bit raw, but overall might be considered rather tame for the more experience psychedelic listener. The problem is that you have to go through this hazy and tedious music jam sessions that's pretentious even for the 60's.

>Best song: Lets get Stoned
Hypnotic 60's anthem of getting high, has a nice peak.

>worst song: The Kiss
Feels really out of place for the album, Jazzy and comes across as pathetic in my head, like a song that a recent divorcee would write while chasing a lost dream for a career in music.

Off to a good start this month!

Earth Wind & Fire - All N’ All

How I’d never heard this album in its entirely is beyond me. My uncle is a huge fan of this group and talks about em all the time. After Maurice White died, he even sent me an article he wrote about em back in the day. Anyway, the grooves are ridiculously tight, with nice little funk guitars, plenty of horns and some great singing. Basically everything you'd expect out of this style.

As a whole, the album is a nice little combination between soul, funk and R&B. The more upbeat songs kind of lean toward funk but with a much poppier feel than most of what I’ve heard. Some of the best tracks on here are in this style - “Fantasy” and “Jupiter” in particular. The slower songs are like a southern soul sound but a bit glossier. I wasn’t a fan of all of these ones, the end up feeling schmaltzy and honestly a bit dated.

The slower, more R&B tracks kind of drug down what could’ve been a ridiculously great album. That being said, I do like the fact that they tried a few different related styles in this album. Overall, it’s a bit corny but fuck it, I dug it.

Various Artists - New York Noise: Dance Music From the New York Underground 1978-1982 (2003)
>dance-punk, no wave, post-punk

Some absolutely killer tunes here. Many of the tracks that experiment more with what "dance music" can be are the best. "Optimo", already a favorite of mine, meshes disco with insane percussion; "Wawa" brings in french pop; "Beat Bop" is one of the earliest experimental hip hop tracks; "Contort Yourself" is an insane free jazz funk exercise; "Lesson No.1" meshes no wave with epic totalism compositions; and "Defunkt" is just a fucking dope jazz-funk track. This compliation may be varied, but it does lose focus at points, and some tracks aren't up to snuff with the rest. Despite that, it's a perfect primer for no wave.

3.0+

Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams (2002)
>avant-garde jazz

I couldn't have expected the last two tracks to be as good as they are, because the first five are pretty meh. They're very calm and very dreamy, but incredibly underwhelming and unmemorable. Yoshihide tries to go for a poppier sounds but he forgets the melodies and the smoothness that makes good jazz pop good, instead making a very awkward halfway point between pop and the avant-garde. But when he embraces avant-garde on the last two tracks, he makes a sublime racket. I was wondering why I kept on hearing melodies from O'Rourke's "Eureka" on the sixth track, but lo and behold, it's an interpretation of "Eureka", with the electronics and the noisy saxes turned up to ten and the length extended an extreme amount. It doesn't improve on one of my favorite songs, but it's a really interesting interpretation, and a wonderful track on its own right. "
Hahen Fukei" is another cool freakout, barely substantial but enthralling as hell. The smooth, poppy sound here is misguided and bland, but the freakouts are really something else.

Duke Ellington and His Orchestra - Masterpieces by Ellington (1951)
>big band

"Mood Indigo" is an absolutely classic composition, and it's performance here is lovely. Ellington obviously knows the piece inside and out and he squeezes every last bit of melodic goodness out of it, it's fifteen minutes long but every second feels meaningful and necessary, and the vocal performance from the seemingly unknown "Yvonne" is lovely. I can't heap as much praise on the rest of the tracks, however. The other compositions most certainly do not deserve their lengths, often going on for a solid five minutes longer than they really need to, and the big band aspect of the music is underutilized, it's underwhelming and Ellington's piano dominated most of the pieces. Being an album from the early '50s, the quality is pretty poor as well, but that's to be expected. It's all pleasant stuff, but nothing can touch "Mood Indigo" or even come close to how wonderful it is.

(someone harmed my ego so here's a real nigga hours review)

>Old Punks

Old Punks is the only release from Doronco Gumo. They are part of the residual movement that was derived from the heat-death of the "japadelic" rock moguls of the 20th century. People who know me knows that I really dig that scene. I adore Japan's response to the Velvet Underground's bold and endlessly creative music.

So naturally, when I found out that the bassist from LRD fronted another band, I was interested. However, the only album that they have released was well past the golden age, so I was a bit hesitant going into it. Needless to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

First of all, I want to briefly discuss the tone of "Old Punks". In terms of songwriting, the music shares the same level of simplicity with it's predecessor, but there is something decidedly different about its approach. It is very mellow and laid back. Not to say that there weren't mellow tracks in LRD's discog, but the songs on here sound especially lax, almost inconsequential even. This immediately set the album apart from it's contemporaries, as it's technique almost goes against how previous bands of it's genre wrote effective music. (This is all speculation, but here me out). Bands like Mainliner, Fushitsusha, 3/3, and LRD are all heavy psych bands that have germinated in the wake of The Velvet Underground. That means that their music is simple, but momentous. All of those bands utilize simple chord progressions, but make sure that each chord change comes with immense weight, carefully wrought atmosphere, perfect guitar tones, endless repetition and context. On the surface, their music is simple, but there is alot of thought and creativity that goes behind the writing of their music. Old Punks shares that same simple effectiveness, but inner workings are fundamentally different. Everything feels loose and carefree. Alot of the aforementioned bands improvised alot, but there was still alot going on contextually.

Old Punks’s airy demeanor works to it’s benefit. It may be alot less weighty, but it still has a hell of alot of charm. This album is effective in the same way Mac Demarco or The Savage Young Taterbug is effective. It hits that “slacker rock” appeal while still in touch with it’s “japadelia” roots. Some tracks even dabble in psychedelic pop. Hell “Lulu” edges ever-so-slightly in shoegaze territory. It doesn’t give a fuck, but it’s still emotionally sincere and I love it for that.

Of course it’s lackadaisical demeanor has it’s downsides. The guitar tone is certainly not one-size-fits-all. Some songs work a hell of a lot better with it than others. Also, the last two songs feel out of place due to it’s unusually clean production.

I don't have an endpiece so... listen to this.

The shorter tracks were really nice, but the longer tracks were sorta dull and unfortunately those make up a large portion of the record. 5/10

>While My Guitar Violently Bleeds
First track was cool; it displayed some great Indian-influenced guitar playing. The second track was interesting with the multiple layers of droning electric guitar. But there was little variation in this 11 minute track so it got old about halfway through. The final track suffered the similar fate as the second, but the final few minutes sorta make up for it. 5/10

a modern classic, and one of the defining works of the genre (at least since its rebirth in the early 2000's)

I think it's a perfect blend of his more rooted blues style and his intense, raga-esque playing.
incredible finger picking also. One of the best players by far

This is a piece with undoubtable fame, given that it is the magnum opus of a composer seen as one of the founders of minimalism. And, in addition to this, much of its background says "magnum opus" as well: the piece is a five hour sprawl from one chord to the next, played within La Monte Young's calculated tuning system of perfectly set ratios, creating an interesting sound for listeners who, like me, are used to Western instrumental intonation – the tuning of Young's Bosendorfer has microtonal intervals from the Western "standard" scale.

Perhaps this move away from the traditions of Western classical music was inspired by the composer's exposition to Indian music during his time at UCLA, because what also appears to be a product of Eastern influence is the fact that the sustain pedal seems to be held for the vast majority of the performance, creating a layer of harmonics around the chords reminiscent of the droning and resonant instrumentation in Hindustani classical music. These harmonics allow the chords and the notes of each melody to blend into one another, while Young blends his playing between a sparse style (for example, when he plays a repeated pedal, allowing the dynamics of the note to become the source of variation, as opposed to the pitch) and thicker passages of rolling arpeggiated chords.

Is The Well-Tuned Piano too long? Perhaps it is, but no listener is forced to sit and listen to it all at once. The almost impenetrable scale of the work allows it to be presented as a monolithic passage of time, in which any arbitrarily selected moment is likely to hold musical beauty.

>>70755153
that sounds really interesting actually. I took a theory class during hs and I'm taking a jazz class right now which is kinda disappointing scope-wise so far but still interesting and fun. I did have a pretty lengthy convo w/ my prof about Blind Willie Johnson after class though which let me brag about how much I pretend to know about music which is always fun for someone like me.

We have a test tomorrow that's "memorize these eight popular jazz songs and know these terms" and pic is part of our study guide. Is your class any similar to this format?

I play clarinet which is the shittiest instrument for outdoor playing cause no one can hear you but it's whatever. I played upright bass in my high school's jazz band and i'm debating whether or not i should start seriously practicing again so i can audition for one of the big bands on campus but idk if i want to invest that much time. I might try and join a small combo or something.
>>
>>70755557
it's a bebop drumming term, ya probably coulda googled it dum xP

the instructor is just going to play about a 30 second sample from a piece and we're expected to know what the song and performer are. Pretty standard for music education classes on specific genres from what I've heard.

songs we're expected to know are
>Lennie ristano Trio - Line Up
>Miles Davis - Boplicity
>Dave Brubeck Quartet - Blue Ronda a la Turk
>Thelonius Monk - Four in One
>Bud Powel - Un Poco Loco
>Coleman Hawkins - Body and Soul
>Art Tatum - Tiger Rag
>Charlie Parker - Shaw Nuff

All are distinct enough to tell them apart as long as you've heard each a few times though. Tiger Rag has Tatum's signature hand movements, Monk's piece has a really distinct dissonance, Davis' piece is laid back as shit, Un Poco Loco has fucking cowbell, etc.

>>70755617
he said Coltrane is going to be a major subject next. We've talked about him being in Davis' band slightly though.

I'm actually really surprised how many people are in this class. Not many people seemed that interested in the subject matter but I guess they needed an art credit and the more epic music classes like "beatlmania" and "woodstock" were already full. Out of nearly a hundred kids there's maybe a handful of people in the class that seem to care about the material.

>>70755638
>upright bass
fucking jealous. I should learn bass.

I used to play alto sax in middle school, which functionally seems similar to clarinet.
>>
>>70755697
Playing bass (especially in a jazz setting) is lit because there's so much subtle improvisation you can do within the chord changes. I played a bit of alto sax too and a lot of the fingerings for the notes are exactly the same as on clarinet. The hardest part about playing both is adjusting your embouchure to the different sized mouthpieces.

>Scratch Acid - The Greatest Gift
Damn this is good. The rhythm section is so tight, they incorporate some nice jazzy ideas while still keeping the main focus just smashing the fuck out of their instruments. I'm not sure if it's the same guitarist from Jesus Lizard but I appreciate the guitar being used a bit more texturally than in that band, filling the gaps the awesome bass and drums leave. This might now be my favourite record from Yow and co, my only complaint is the length, there's a bit of filler here which I think you could cut and it'd be improved a lot. 4/5

>The Savage Young Taterbug - Theme For Gasoline Weirdo
I couldn't get too into this, there's cool ideas but the looping feels like it's in a weird middle ground where it doesn't go on long enough to be droney and just feels like it might be interrupting a good song. But it's enjoyable anyway. Also it's annoying the hell out of me, 1-3 mins of the 1st track sounds just like something but I can't put a name to it at all. 3/5

>Shotgun Wedding

I'm a big fan of Rowland already, but this was my introduction to Lydia Lunch. In this record she only does the vocals, which are okay since definitely fit the style of the music, but not really special as you can probably hear the same type of singing in many other post-punk releases. However this is still a great record thanks to Rowland's guitar playing. He does some pretty noisy riffs in the style of the birthday party and also some slower and more bluesy ones in the same fashion as that of his later records. His backing vocals in some tracks are also deserve a mention. He doesn't really sing much in this one but the music is still full of his personality, so it's worth listening to if you're into him, or just like dark post-punk in general.

3.5/5

i'm glad you found no lives matter interesting. the main thing i disagree with is you taking ytp death as comically as you did. ytps are supposed to be funny by their nature, but within the context of the album, with no accompanying video, the humor is lost. you're left with complete deconstruction of the human voice. i think it plays in very well. you'd probably like New Wounds more. it's a lot more focused.

also i guess i can say that one of my bodies has a new album out:
