The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

The Mothers of Invention - Burnt Weeny
I wasn't fond of most of this I have to be honest but The Little House I Used to Live In is a fucking saga man
Igor's Boogie 1 and 2 are my least favourite, I get what they are trying to do, but that doesn't make them not repulsive

The Constrictus Corporation - The Ziggurat
Great
just, great
takes a while to get going, but by the 5th track I was hooked, it's really something to listen to in one go
After a while you really start to get into Tudor Jones doing the voices, which is cool, but the fact that he mock-flubs his lines sometimes irks me

Art Blakey - Free For All
Yep, that's jazz

ミラクルミュージカル - Hawaii Part 2
There are some really good songs here (like Labyrinth) and some p crap songs (The Mind Electric), overall it's ok

>Girl Band - The Early Years

What the fuck happened to this band's mixing? It sounds like the bass is being recorded from the other side of the wall, and the vocalist is screaming from the very back of the recording room.
My guess is that they wanted to have their "own" sound since France 98, while fantastic and energetic, sounded like every other noise rock act sonically. Though their style of playing and singing is identifiable, so I still don’t see the reasoning.

Anyway, this is would be a run-of-the-mill noise rock record if not for the great lyrics and the absolute monolith of a track that is Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage. It’s a swirl of groaning, noisy terror that builds explodes and rebuilds, invoking fond memories of early Liars material like from their horrifically underrated album They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. That balance of ugly noise, angry vocals, and catchy rhythms is something that is just right up my alley. Also, the song is a cover of an industrial techno song from Blawan, and hearing the translation from industrial techno to noise rock is something to behold.

I need to see this band live.

>Mississippi John Hurt - 1928 Sessions
This is the only time jangle has ever been right about literally anything. I could go on and on about how incredible these songs are, but instead I'm going to cop out and complain. How in the FUCK are there more and higher ratings for the OKeh version??? Probably because of the pseudo-nostolgic cover art I would presume that goes good on avant-teens higher-end rating scale. Shit brings my piss to a boil I swear. The mixing on OKeh isn't TERRIBLE but just listening to both right after the other makes the differences so apparent it's amazing. No reason the OKeh version should even exist, honestly. They used a pretty dated production technique that sounds terrible now by trying (and failing) to remove surface sound. Seriously, if you have a high rating of OKeh delete it and give the Yazoo version a higher rating.
9

>Joe Harriott & Amancio D'Silva Quartet - Hum Dono
Okay fine Jangle gets to be right ONE more time but this is seriously it. This is like, the second jazz album I've ever heard from bongland and it was pretty damn good. I suck at reviewing jazz, but the vocals, bright horn timbres made this all seem very dreamy. Quite nice.
I dunno. 8? Yeah, 8.

>Księżyc - s/t
This is, to me, the sort of atmosphere a lot of those "neo-folk" artists try and (always) fail at recreating. There's something so authentic and old-world feeling about this. Feels like being a peasant dying from the fucking plague rather than going to a medieval fair and wearing silly underpants.

>Komeda Quintet - Astigmatic
Autismatic lmao

jk I actually really enjoyed this. I'm not sure what words I can use to describe a lot of this-era jazz that aren't already descriptors on rym, but this did have a real "dangerous" quality to it I'd say. That's a word I'm allowed to use, right? I'm not sure if sure if the last track was actually "worse" than the previous two, but I feel like it was more of the fact that I got tired of this style for 40 minutes rather than it actually being any worse. Still enjoyed profusely regardless.
8

>Viet Cong - s/t
Surprisingly creative for a modern post-punk album. It's not revivalist, indie posuer, and seems to stick to the genre's roots in a tasteful way, while adding new elements that aren't ham-fisted in the slightest. The first couple tracks are kind of a snore but I'd say sitting through this album is definitely worth it, as song quality increases with nearly every track. Save for Holograms and Iceage, probably one of the best examples of a popular group doing this genre right.
7

>Everyone Asked About You - s/t
I seem to disagree about literally everyone on this whole emo thing. I really enjoyed the explosiveness from the guitars/drums on tracks one and two, otherwise this EP was pretty much worthless to me. Seriously, something like Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit is 20x more effective than this. People tend to call bands like Snowing, Brave Little Abacus' vocals "annoying" but the indie twee-esque vocals here are fucking awful by both of the vocalists, the female vocalist in particular. I'd go for dynamic and unique explosive behavior than "indifying" it ANY day.
5

>Skream - Skream!
Really enjoyed tracks similar to Rutten, but I swear there is some undefinable qualities about these types of bong-grime albums I truly just don't care for at all.

also Księżyc - s/t got an 8 shit

>Preoccupations - s/t
Similarities it had with some of the Polish Coldwave bands were well-welcomed, but other than that this album is kind of a mess. Very few songs really come together completely. The shorter tracks are disjointed unsatisfying messes and the longer track feels like four or five half-completed tracks compiled into one song with little continuity between them. A few salvageable tracks, but hardly worth such a controversy.
5

>10cc - Sheet Music
Shit music lmao

Seriously though, the second track was alright, but this was just really boring pop-rock.
4

BONUS:

>The Pablo Collective - The Death of Pablo
An album exclusively good in theory. I really do find these "crowd-created" albums interesting and I hope this review doesn't discourage the creators (it probably won't) from making anything similar, but this is literally just bad dark ambient with interview segments and splices from TLoP. Not something I particularly cared for, but Washed Up had some good moments. The people calling this Prog-Hop (as with most outside-the-artists attempts to tie in progressiveness with hip hop) are retarded.

I listened to more but going more than three posts with my wall-o-reviews(tm) is against several of my religions.

Arthur Russell - Love Is Overtaking Me (2008)
>singer/songwriter, folk rock

I admire this album a lot, because it affirms just how fucking talented Russell was. He's one of the few musicians who were never confined to any one genre or style, he's taken on minimalism, disco, art pop, classical, and he's done all of those genres very well. Folk rock, on the other hand, is not his forte. This is a decent effort, mainly because the songwriting and the vocals are quite good like most of Russell's other works, but the production and sound here are pretty terrible. It's got a very awful '80s sheen to it, the passion and subtlety commonly associated with Russell are gone, replaced with some very sterile production and cheesy as hell pre-programmed drums. I'd probably like this more if it was done by someone besides Arthur Russell, because the songwriting is definitely solid, and "Love Comes Back" is a damn fine track, but there are quite a few duds here, and the cheesy, sterile sound of the album really hurts it.

Toshimaru Nakamura - No-Input Mixing Board (2000)
>onkyo

Very pretty minimalist feedback-based stuff. Some aspects of onkyo are still lost on me, like the extreme sparseness of it, but the way this is structured between more active passages and passages of near-silence is really cool. The way it was produced is really cool too, it's just feedback from a mixing board. Like most onkyo, less is most definitely more here.

Amps for Christ - Circuts
>Avant-Folk, Folktronica

Though I’m not a big fan of these genre labels, they’re fairly accurate descriptors. Whole album is a weird blend of crunchy, noisy electronic elements and folk melodies. Pretty sure that’s the definition of “folktronica” or whatever. Anyway, hearing the buzzing feedback roar over the more peaceful british folk is an intriguing combination. There’s times when the combo is surprisingly peaceful (“Sweet William and Lady Margaret”) and at times it even comes off as eerie and droney (“Janitor of Lunacy”). The later song kind of reminds me of Nico - the pairing of the dissonant guitar work and creepy vocals sounds just like it should belong on Marble Index.

However, this ends up being an experience that I find feels too jumbled and messy. I guess part of this is because I haven’t heard much in this genre. The only folk-electronic fusions I’ve heard (off the top of my head) are the new Bon Iver (meh) and Age of Adz. The styles clash a little too much for my tastes and I really wish this were more consistently one or the other. Not bad though, just not my favorite.

Glenn Jones - This is the Wind That Blows Out
>American Primitivism

Maybe I’ve just been hearing the classics but I’ve yet to find an album in this style that I don’t like. The guitar playing always feels so free and loose yet technically proficient. Jones, just like Fahey, weaves through a few influences - country, classical, folk etc. It could easily come off as pretentious but it’s genuinely one of the most beautiful styles of music I’ve found. Maybe it’s the novelty at this point though, I’m not sure.

The biggest difference I noticed between Jones’ and Fahey’s guitar playing is the pacing. Fahey tends to go on these huge rapid-fire whirlwinds of playing and Jones is a bit slower. Jones still does so (“Sphinx Unto Curious Men” in particular) but he seems mellower as a whole, maybe with more classical influence? Might just be me though.

Not quite at the level of Fahey’s stuff but it’s gorgeous and thoroughly entertaining.

>>70712523
Yeah, his style is a lot more deliberate. I think it's cuz he takes more influence from drone and krautrock with Cul de Sac, he's more about feel and texture than technicality.

there's people who criticize them for those three, four breaks where they stray into different genres, and i don't think they realize the whole album is damn incoherent, even though there's kind of an overall arc, a macrostructure to it, it's the individual parts. that's kinda interesting, especially because the only time they ever return to a section is the reprise of the opening melody at the very end of the album, idunno. maybe there's other reprises or motifs throughout, it's a tough one to swallow

I was in high school when Colours came out and I straight up loved it. Listened to it almost everyday, but most of my friends hated it, and I think they were right too. It's like, it's got incredible individual moments (too many to name, really), but holistically there's no particular rhyme or reason to it. It blew my 18-year-old mind how it was one continuous suite, but now it's clear how it's not really that at all, and more than anything else it seems like a showcase of everyone's skills...which one may or may not have a problem with. I don't know, I think there are right and wrong ways to approach this particular album critically. I sure as hell thought it was fun though.

>Between the Buried and Me - Colors
This album may as well be exhibit A in the case for critiquing albums with a relativist methodology. It forces you to face it on its own terms, but it also makes little sense and would frustrate anyone that thinks metal especially as a genre has a set of laws for what separates quality from garbage. It's easy (see: lazy) to make blanket statements like, "I just don't like metalcore," etc. Seems important to add this disclaimer after reading through a lot of reviews. So that's what I'm going to do--take it within the context of what it is (or seemingly aims to be).

I shouldn't need to give a rundown of all the different detours the band goes through in the course of what's overall a progressive metal/metalcore album, because I'm sure you've already heard about that aspect, but there are some hoedowns, vaudeville ditties, parts that wouldn't be too out of place in a Donkey Kong Country game. Their presence seems to have a polarizing effect on listeners--some call it wankery, some call it fun. I've always thought the thin line between genius and stupid lies somewhere under the umbrella of prog. My own take on it is this: individually, these detours are often great. Both Zappa and Ween throw together wildly different genres over the course of an album and people praise their ability to convey each disparate sound convincingly. I don't have qualms about having muzak and prog metal in the same song if it sounds good and subsequently enhances the album. This "if" is a big one though. One of the better songs here, "Sun of Nothing" builds nice tension over its course (the song is about floating toward the sun--it's about tension) until about 3/4's of the way through when they play a soft jazz/muzak ditty before delivering the great climax that the rest of the song had been building up to. It's these moments--the ones that interfere with formal qualities of music, like concept of tension or cohesion--that just make it worse.

I was about 16 years old when this album came out, and the ADD-like characteristics of this album didn't bother me much because I was pretty ADD myself. I loved the circus-like guitar solo toward the end of "(B) The Decade of Statues," which is still admittedly pretty fun, but I can't say now that it makes this album any better as a work of art. And if anything, it makes me take it less seriously, which is something I do want to do because the great no-nonsense moments are indeed outstanding (see: "Foam Born (A) The Backtrack", parts of "Ants of the Sky", "Viridian", "White Walls", which is hands-down the highlight). 7/10

>Jandek - Chicago Wednesday

The next double live album finds Rep (guitar) jamming with John McEntire of Tortoise (drums) and Joshua Abrams. 7 tracks and all of them over a 10 minute length.

From the first drum hits you can sort of tell what is going to happen during this performance. McEntire and Abrams are going to do the impossible. They are trying to stick together the jagged guitar from Sterling and turn it into a more “coherent” rock and roll sound. Well, I think they did a pretty good job. Especially McEntire who always finds a drum fill for Sterling’s scratches. Whether it is a slow tune or a fast one, everything seems to sound just fine. They all get rowdy as hell on The Lost Ruse too and holy shit it sounds great.

The lyrical content from the rep isn’t that spectacular but there are a couple of great themes. The closing “My Vow” boasts some admirable commitment to loved ones, Land Of God has mentions of prison and suffering, the opening “Bad Times” justifies the title of the track cause the protagonist really does feel like shit. A mix of stuff that doesn’t really connect to each other but it’s nice either way.

Record is alright. It actually sounds “good” in the conventional sense. There are grooves, progressions and all that jazz. Worth a listen just for the efforts of McEntire and Abrams alone.

sword heaven- entrance

wonderful. a noise-industrial affair that doesn't overstay it's welcome and doesn't compromise. absolutely pummeling, but still rich in instrumentation. it's loud as hell but things don't get muddled, or, to my surprise, fatiguing. it's so colossal but doesn't wear you down.
Very, VERY highly recommended to fans of Swans' PUBLIC CASTRATION.
>>
>>70725899
I'm a fan of regular public castration, should I listen to it too?

>Tetragrammacide- Typhonian Wormholes
>war metal/noise
a huge fucking mess. mashed and muddled so it's like HNW at times, with a drummer whose cymbals sound like a kitchen disaster. Musical Abortions is a slightly bigger mess than this, for frame of reference, except this is well-produced to be that way instead of just being some awful quality demo tape
it's surprisingly enjoyable in some ways though. there's some killer noise effects that sound like liquid.

>Chmod's picks
Techno more like HeckNO. Idk if chmod's even been on since that meltdown but you probably should have gone with some more essential bleeps rather than this stuff since I'm not a big fan anyway.

>Woolite's picks
Honor Killed The Samurai was cool, nothing mind blowing and none of the tracks stand out a lot individually but there's a great chill atmosphere throughout that I liked a lot. Sibylle Baier was really nice too, she manages to get that same melancholy atmosphere Cohen does in his music which I can't help enjoying.

Rec me anything Woolite, FlyingIceWizard. Will probably just message Rod on rym.

Meredith Monk - Dolmen Music
Eh it was ok, I do have a respect for vocal performance like this, it's fucking hard. That being said, do not much care for scat singing, although in this case it is much more tolerable than say, Alan Bishop thinking he's an avant-jazz man
the final track was the best one

Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
it's p good, p funky, don't have much else to say

Keiji Haino - Koko
It's good, but a little too repetitive for my tastes, this will be something that I will listen to again because the high points were indeed high, but for now this is the score

Young Fathers - White Men are Black Men Too
It's sometimes really good and sometimes a bit crap in the sense that it gets really dang cluttered at points.

Sondre Lerche - Sondre Lerche
Have to admit I'm impressed, Nyarl is crushin it
This was great, Lerche really pulls off the smooth rough dynamic

>In Search of the Turtle's Navel
The first time I listened to this I gave it a 5. I thought it was really pleasant but uninspired primitive guitar. Subsequent listens opened up Ackerman's beautiful melodies to me. I loved every track on this album, besides the closer, which was a bit disappointing. 8/10. p.s. saving the best (Fahey) for last

>Amnesia Scanner
Pretty decent TRAP-INFLUENCED uk bass. Just like most of the uk bass albums I've listened to, it's a mixed bag of great tracks and meh tracks. 6/10
>>
>>70730553
Ooh, nice picks. I find them pretty interesting- because while I love them, I haven't really latched on to either too hard- at least, not like some others on the record. I'm constantly re-assessing my favorite songs and records in Sondre's back catalog though, it's like they change with each listen almost. You know how you'll hear a good record and after a couple of listens, a new song gets you? I love that. I bet "Go Right Ahead" or "Coliseum Town" will get you on the next listen
