Oldfag guy here (48). I've had a lot of carpal tunnel problems and I had to stop playing for three years due to elbow issues. It's a shame to have these problems when you're not yet 50, but I do grind the axe really fucking hard. I always imagine that if Stevie Ray Vaughn hadn't died early, he'd probably have issues due to his super-aggressive playing and heavy strings.

mates to play weird games with, and a cute wife, and a bunch of kids, and a house =/= good life, necessarily. I mean, better than most, and I'm thankful for what i have.. but it's always hard work. If i didn't have to work so hard, then it'd be good. Sometimes i yearn for the days of being alone and single, wondering why i ever thought it sucked so bad. It's just different, not worse. Grass always greener and all that i suppose. I always tell my wife if anything ever happened to her, I'd never into a relationship again. Even tho she says i "need to" for the kids.

I bought these after using ernie ball green and fender stainless steel for ever.
Really floppy, almost no tension, so no downtuning or heavy handed playing. They're really bright with almost no bass, no matter what I try with my amp EQ.

D'Addario and Rotosound strings are obscenely bright.

If you want darker get DR or BHS.

Also 40s is a whole .005 off of the standard E bass strings so yeah it's normal you won't be able to downtune with those you should've gotten .50s
>>
>>70394916

I'm at my most productive when I find another artist who inspires me. Sometimes I'll listen to an album, and try to write a song with the same sort of feeling. I went through a major ska phase a couple weeks ago and now I'm writing open string indie shit.

Writing is just improvising until something good falls out of your hands.

how hard is it to give your guitar a setup as a complete newbie (to guitar maintenance)?
i don't have a job (so no money for the usual luthier) and i want to get some stuff recorded with my band, but my guitar (a strat) has high action and the intonation's not accurate

Ear training along with learning a bit of theory is good practice. You don't need to go overboard learning melodic minor and scales like that just yet. Just learn your pentatonic scales and maj/min scales, learn songs by ear and see how the theory you learn is used in a practical scenario.
>>
>>70397362
It's pretty hard to use not gonna lie, it's super washy, and you're gonna need to fiddle around a bit and experiment of where you're gonna use it. But when you can use it, it sounds fantastic. Super deep, and just kinda beautiful to hear if you're playing at home alone. If you already have a more "standard" reverb and are interested it's pretty great.
>>
>>70396674
If you have a strat like in your pic, it's easy. Dont really need to measure, set the action by turning the allen screws in the saddle. Go as low as you can without it fret buzzing anywhere. The screw on the bottom with the spring around it sets intonation. Play the note open, tune it. Play the 12th fret harmonic, make sure it's the same note. Too sharp, turn the screw clockwise, too flat, counterclockwise. Then play the note fretted at the 12th, but dont press like a gorilla, just as you'd play normally. It should be close or perfect, if it isn't, adjust the saddle again. You can get it to play pretty well without even fucking wth the truss rod. If you wanna do that, look down the neck for relief and adjust it enough by eye but to do it to spec you'll need a tools, and need to do it first, before adjusting any of the other stuff. But if you're a new to it and don't understand tensile strength you can do costly damage. The other shit is easily adjustable and nothing will break if you do it wrong, your guitar will just sound like crap until you get it right.

Yeah man. Pretty much the whole Pulp Fiction soundtrack (Surf Rider, Bullwinkle Pt. II, Misirlou, Bustin' Surfboards)

Ventures are great too, Walk Don't Run is my go-to guitar jam. Their version of Besame Mucho got me a few dates in high school.

Chantays have nice jams like Intoxica and Pipeline, you could try the Dick Dale + SRV version of Pipeline even.

Question /mu/

so I've been playing guitar a while, played in a couple bands. I've been trying to get back into gigging but no one was looking for a guitarist, but plenty looking for a bassist. I recently picked up a bass for recording. I've played along on bass to a few tracks and can keep up easy enough. Do you think I could jump straight into a band playing bass off the back of playing guitar?
>>
>>70398678
Nah, I preferred Amplitude, over GR 5, but got frustrated by shitty software and latency issues. So I got rid of it all and got a used Pod X3 Live for $100.
>>
>>70399017
Did you have Amplitube 3 or 4. I am trying to find a torrent but can't find any 4 for windows?
>>
>>70399003
As a foot in the door kind of way probably. The problem mainly is that to be a GOOD bassist you'll have to actually put in practice about holding down a groove, filling in the pocket and actually being one with the drums. Easier said than done in the end.

Seriously though, the fact that both Roger Daltrey and Gene Simmons would agree that rock is dead should really tell you something. It's sort of like when both Louis Farrakhan and David Duke endorsed Trump for president, it was a foregone conclusion at that point.

top half is ok, bottom is bad. sort your room out.

Well, if you're talking standard notation, the time signature and note shape tells you how long the note should ring out for. Like if it's 4/4 and the B is a whole note, let it ring out for 4 beats. If the F is played before the bar, the B would still be ringing.

B is a half note in the second half of the measure and then F is a quarter note that is the first note of the next measure.

can you keep a groove?
are you great at rhythm?
is your ego small enough that you won't get in the way of the other players but actually help them?
if yes to all, give it a try.
bass isn't too hard if you know guitar.

Thanks anon. Also, how are notes out of the first couple of frets indicated in staff notation? I have a Pink Floyd song book that's in both staff and tab and the staff has notes that would normally be played on the first couple of frets but the tab shows those notes as being on the 12/13/14th fret and stuff like that. How would you know to have your hand further up the fret board with only staff notation?

You have to make the decision where to play notes yourself - tab books don't always get the position right.

I started on classical guitar and I use classical style fingerings - a circled number to designate which string to play on.
