Trying these because they were on sale last month. I usually use the cheaper D'addario chrome flats.

Verdict: the DR flats sound nice and play nice but they are not worth the extra 10-15 bucks over the D'addario chromes. In a blind test with my basses plugged in to my amp, I doubt I could differentiate them based on tone.

By connector you mean Audio Interface?
A good one is probably $200-600.

For example, if you're a Mac guy, Apogee's Duet 2 is basically the standard.

You can plug line-in and get enough gain to record crystal clear, and there are good pre-amps for your mics too if you want to mic up your guitar rig.

Flashback came today, have a humble family shot. Setup is unfinished to excuse the mess.

Now all I really need is a compressor, overdrive and maybe a noise gate later on.
>>
I've never jammed with someone because I'm afraid they'll just want to play songs from the radio. When you jam with someone how willing are they usually to just make shit up there and then? I love noodling on scales and making riffs but I don't know very many songs.

I'm talking about drummers, keyboard players, etc not other guitarists.
>>
>>69977424
Flashback is great
>>
>>69977445
just literally ask if they want to improvise, if they want to play covers, they aren't worth your time anyways
>>
>>69977445
Most of the time jam means improvise. Jamming with just a drummer is great. Highly unlikely they will want to play radio songs. Specify your age in your post.
>>
>>69977336
Yeah that's what I meant, kinda new to this computer recording stuff.

Prepared to spend a fair bit but ~£500 for your suggestion is a bit much, just looking to lay some stuff down and mess around rather than a professional-tier set up.

Got any recs for roughly half the price?
>>
>>69977544
18, I know a drummer and a keyboard player and was thinking about setting up a session but I'm not sure what kind of stuff we would do.
>>
>>69977445

drummers are the easiest going of the lot, you can jam with them all day.
>>
>>69977613
this
drummers are bros and will most of the time, go with the flow

What tuning do you have these in? I have .13s on my Les Paul but I had to drop them to C standard because in E standard the neck was visibly bending from the string tension.
>>
>>69978048
Get a used Classic Player Jazzmaster for $500-$600, Squier Mustang $200 with an extra $200 in upgrades or a Japanese Jaguar or Mustang for $500-$600. Or you don't be a fag and get a used American Tele for $650

Muh thick tones.

But honestly, I was using .10s on a Strat, which I heard were like .11s on a Les Paul, and they were super comfy. So I decided going 2 gauges up to try it out wouldn't hurt. Nope. Not too big of a loss, I did want a C standard guitar to play stuff like Queens of the Stone Age etc.

Didn't SRV play .13s in E standard on a Strat?

>>69978185
>>69978165
We'll it's a Mustang MG73 in Competition Orange, it's got a few nicks here and there but it's fine. The guy who I bought it from priced it as the same as any other Japanese RI Mustang without looking into the market of that color. This guitar is also reissued as a 1969 with a matching headstock and precise detail to the original vintage 1969s, these are the ones that usually sell for $800-$900.
TL/DR: I won't mind selling and waiting my 1973 RI for an exact replica of a 1969, it'll technically be a trade.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that this isn't bait
materials used to make guitar
pickups(the things that pick up the vibrations from the strings and take them to your amp)
strings, there are many different kinds, some thick, some thin. this will affect your tone
whether its a solid body guitar, semi-hollow, or a hollow body
many other factors but those are probably the most important ones a beginner should know
also the amp will impact the sound greatly
>>
>>69978465
not uncommon for non-lead guitarists (which I don't think applies to OP though)
>>
Should I learn to play well with my thumb? I've been learning for a few months now and pretty much only play with a pick because when I play with my thumb it sounds pretty shitty.
>>
>>69978380
I'm going to badly paraphrase something I read a while ago:

All guitar sounds different. This is because the sound of the instrument is formed up the vibration of the strings. Literally everything effects the exact way the strings will vibrate and there for how it will sound. Not only this but the pickups pick up all sorts of vibration from the body of the guitar to. So everything, the wood, the neck, the strings, the pick, the picks ups and the way you hit the string effect the sound.

And this is all before the equipment you use to amplify the sounds which is essence a sin wave. A sin wave which can be easily manipulated in all sorts of ways to make slightly different sounds or tones as guitar faggots call them

Kek I knew if I posted it it being a Mustang or the color would make you guys say sell it. I have an upgraded Squier with Hot Rails for heavy stuff and I wanted a MiJ Mustang for clean Surf. The color is my favorite since i like offset colors and it reminds me of the Mangos my grandma used to give me when I was a lil boy. But I do have to agree financially and say a $400 profit is worth it especially when I'm only $300 shy from a Vintage Mustang or a stripped finish one I can repaint to Orange anyways.

Also I have a Tele
>>
>>69978398

As a beginner I would learn every basic chord shape (all open chords, and F and B. As a beginner you'll really struggle with F and especially B, don't worry if it takes you weeks to get them right). Actually just check out a site like Justin Guitar and go through all the beginning materials, that would be a solid start imo. Can be a bit boring, in which case just learn an easy song you like or something.
>>
>>69978558
I think I can get a little cash together for 2 or 3 sessions, I know I guy thats pretty good and who teachers other students

>>69978702
yeah i am trying to do that, but now that i know some chords i feel like learning songs for days or whatever is just a giant waste of time since i don't really get any better aside from knowing a song.

>>69978772
i ran maj/min scales for a while and i should do that more with warmups, my right hand alt picking is still super slow when trying to play like either coheed/maiden/metal (as an example).

i guess i was just wondering how good mel bays is because i seem to "learn the most" or progress the most when i complete a few pages of those books. i want to take lessons again (did bass a long time ago), but i am too jewish to spend the money. i kinda want to just run the books on my own for a year and then go get a legit teacher.

£500 is a pretty large budget for a first amp, you dont need that much power, start cheaper
>>
>>69978987
I didn't get any of that stuff
>>
>>69978933
how long have you played for?

it's never a waste of time, transitioning between chords should become second nature and you only achieve that from practice.
>>
>>69979041
i played bass for a long time but never really got "good". i started playing guitar in october but had some down time with vacations over thanksgiving/xmas.

i'm relearning a lot of theory i once knew, and a lot is coming back to me very fast, it's just my guitar mechanics are non-existant and are currently being formed.

i just feel like a huge fag only playing punk rock or making up dumb shit on an acoustic with open chords all of the time.
>>
Will I fuck up my pedals if I run them in 18v instead of 9v?
>>
>>69978937
thank
>>69978989
my reasoning was I didnt want to spend ~200 on a amp now only to spend ~500 in a year or two. I am open to look into anything though.
>>
>>69979021
it might be a solid state thing. I had a line 6 spider amp and I heard about the dummy plug thing years ago and it legitimately made my amp sound better and more clear. It didn't turn into a tube amp but the dummyplug cleared some of the muddy bottom end. Idk how but I was happy about it.
>>
>>69979103

Yes
>>
>>69979103
No, in fact it will make them sound twice as good

>>69979119
I can see that logic, if this your first guitar and amp kind of thing normal people just buy basic gear and make sure they like the hobby first
>>
>>69979091
>i just feel like a huge fag only playing punk rock or making up dumb shit on an acoustic with open chords all of the time

Everybody starts off playing shit like Smells Like Teen Spirit and Wonderwall. You're being too negative about yourself.

Try out some different styles and focus on the ones you like, write a couple of songs too however bad. Fun breeds enthusiasm and you won't get anywhere without that.

Always nice, well the Marshal MG stuff is cheap, basic, and does the job

Theres a quick run down of the amps:
Fender: Normally sort after for there distortion break up
Vox: See fender but think wooder-y
Blackstar; Known for metal, works well for pop punk and even noisier rocker
Orange: Know for warm tone, mad crutch when you up the gain

any idea on your first guitar?

Mind went totally blank during my first gig, bassist though so survived with some basic improv. Took from that that you can never over-prepare, know not just your individual parts but your compositions throughout.

Stage fright and nerves never go away for some unlucky folks like me, but you get through it by enjoying yourself. Audiences don't notice mistakes, especially when they're drunk.

Sound engineers are always grumpy cunts too, so make sure to arrive at venues early with plenty of time to sound check and EQ properly.
>>
>>69980366
Depends, I personally get some sort of adrenaline rush.
I think how confident you are also depends on how you feel on stage, for example a few insecure girls I knew who had to perform something on stage for school broke down in tears afterwards. But girls are weird in general.

>how does it feel to play live?
Feels good, man. Not much is as satisfying as a crowd getting rowdy for your music. It's still nerve-racking before I get on stage even after 4 years, but once I'm up there it's just a good time.

>what stuff do you / does your band play when you perform live?
death metal unironically

>what kind of gear do you use?
5150 and a Mesa 2x12

>how do you know when a show has gone well or gone badly?
Merch sales are an obvious indicator. As is good crowd interaction. A general rule is if you and your band are feeling it on stage, the audience will feel it too. Another way to tell if it goes well is lots of people will come up to you afterwards to give compliments. Although people will give a quick offhanded "good set, man" even if you suck ass that night, so it's more believable if they seem really genuine with specific comments and want to talk for awhile.
And when it's bad, you know. Save drugs and alcohol for after the show

>horror stories
One night a lot of shit went wrong all at once. Gear fuck-ups and drunk bandmates combined into a shit-show. The drunk drummer miscounted two song intros and stopped playing instead of finding the beat like he should have, so we had to start them over. Also his double pedals kept coming apart so he'd have to fix them between songs. The drunk bassist got too rowdy and knocked over the rhythm guitarist's mic on his cab and a couple cymbal stands. The rhythm guitarist for some unknown reason brought his old fucky Line 6 head which fizzled out into a clipping mess towards the end of the set. Add sloppy performances to all of that and you get the picture

Sounds like a disaster from the get-go, let alone playing death metal. My old band were pretty strict, beer or two to settle the nerves and that's it.

I really miss playing with them, all good musicians and our frontman would let us jam freely.
>>
>>69982242
I learned how to play and sing when I started off because I wanted to be like billie joe from Green Day. I just fumbled through it most of the time until much more recently where I could kind of work on muscle memory alone and kind of separate the barrier between singing and playing.

Now Me being GOOD at it is a different story.

Are you shit at playing through?
>>

It's simple as fuck, but I love to lay down the guitar and bass parts of Can I Kick It on my looper and solo over them. I guess it's technically a Lou Reed song though, so not necessarily hip hop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71ubKHzujy8

The intro to Eminem's Lose Yourself is really easy too.

Do it yourself. It's time.
>>
>>69983689
timing could be a bit better
are you playing to the track or are you playing to a metronome with the track quieted in the background?
the mix isn't great but that's not important
Keep at it though

is timing bad all the time or only at some missed phrases?
playing to both the track and metronome
not final mix, just recorded the bass; had it loud for better rater's listening
>>
>>69983923
do you think the timing is too off to get messy in a final mix?
