They're nice if you don't pay too much for them. I had a 335 copy that I got for $200 and it was nicer than lots of the Epi dots I tried out. Set up real easy and the pickups sounded great for what they were. I don't know if I'd recommend them new (depends on what you're getting) but they have no resale value, so you can pick up pretty good deals on them.

I've only tried the cheaper models but the impression that I got is that they're very cheaply made guitars made to look like more expensive models with flame veneers and abalone inlays etc...

this for example has that really cheap style of neck that is normally found on sub $150 guitars.

Jazz III.

I have those Petrucci picks too, but I find them too big, even though they're ever so slightly bigger than the Jazz III. I guess I'm too used to them.

>>69964114

Agreed, I don't like how hard it can be to find maple necks now. Oh well, at least I love Fender.

Also guys, got my first proper amp (Orange Dark Terror) and don't have any pedals, want to get Jack White / Boris / Sleep / Sunn O))) tones. And just in general nice sounds, I play and love pretty much everything.

What should my first pedal be? I'm stuck between a fuzz, overdrive, delay, or reverb.

>What should my first pedal be? I'm stuck between a fuzz, overdrive, delay, or reverb.
I'd get some type of fuzz like a big muff for Sleep type tones, Sunn O)))'s core pedal is a proco RAT. Wata from Boris uses a watafuzz a lot I think and I've seen Takeshi use an eau clair thunder, which is basically a big muff on steroids
>>

Mmm I've had my eye on a Big Muff for a while, I know it's more popular but I'm not sure if I'd prefer it to a RAT, they seem pretty similar. Those other two pedals, I don't think I could justify the price really.

I don't like the OR15 that much. If I'm gonna upgrade, I'd go for the TH30.
>>
>>69964843
>>69964401
from my experience, both the dark terror and expecially the or15 don't seem to like pedals
I have an or15 on sale sitting at home for a few months now
great head, loud and dirty, but with 15 watts you have zero clean headroom, and using more than one or two pedals will completely destroy your sound
I've also been playing the tiny terror, same problem, but it's also a matter of taste
my guitarist is selling the OR15 to buy a deluxe reverb

set up for c standard, going through a few pedals and a bass terror

any point in changing the pups on a squier affinity or am I better off saving up for a new guitar?

I want to buy a good distortion box for around 50-60 bucks. Any recs?

I've owned the Boss DS-1, MXR Distortion+, RAT, and Metal Zone before. Looking for something that can get pretty metal without sounding like a scooped piece of garbage.
>>
>>69965125
As an owner of a squire affinity I would get a new guitar
>>
>>69965059
yeah... also if you bought Orange you must like the tone of the head
I'm not actually suggesting you to go and buy a 1000$ fender combo just to add some pedals to your chain
unfortunately, what I'm saying is that you'll have to be careful with the knobs on your pedals if you plan to use a low wattage Orange amplifier
but I might also be wrong, you'll plug everything in and crank the gain and love the sound
I can tell you that I like it, and I had three big muffs playing through the OR15 (not at the same time) it's a very doomy sound

>>69962720
I do agree, the feel of a rounded pick is not quite as satisfying as a sharp pick. However, on the other hand, I've found that pinch harmonics ("squealies") are much easier to accommodate with rounded ends rather than sharp. So if you play a lot of those, try giving rounded picks a go!
>>
Best fuzz pedal that gets stupid sputtery?
>>
>>69965397
I don't see what's hilarious.
If you google it, you'll find people talking about it, and giving various explanation as to why it works with some Amps.
What matters is that it actually works.
>>
>>69965408
Sputtery as in clipping or oscillations?
>>

If I Google Bigfoot, I'll find people giving various explanation as to why it's real too. Do you understand what you're doing when you insert a 1/4 dummy plug into an unused input jack?
>>
>>69965431

Uhh, I don't know the difference, but clipping I think. Happens with most fuzz pedals when you turn them all the way up.

I know you're just parroting what you've read online and I want to laugh at you, but I won't. You need to do some research and try to understand what's happening electronically if you want to be taken seriously around real guitarists. There's too much snake oil in the guitar industry, you need to understand what's happening and why if you don't want to be taken for a ride.

>>
>>69965742
not that anon but let me tell you something
there's nothing worse than being too much focused on being a physicist and consider yourself worthy of consideration since you perfectly know the wiring of all your pedals and heads
I give you that it's important to know some of the basics, to prevent damaging your stuff, but then again, that doesn't necessarily make you a better musician/artist
>>
>>69965792
don't do that
>>
>>69965742
Instead of taking this prideful know-it-all stance, how about you actually say something more useful displaying your profound wisdom

I'm fine if I'm proved wrong, though in this case, whatever the reason, I still hear a difference.
>>
>>69965846
>that doesn't necessarily make you a better musician/artist
Yes, it does. Because I understand what's happening when I plug something in, modify, or adjust my gear. Then when I'm creating music I go directly from point A to point B instead of wasting time & energy randomly throwing shit at the wall and hoping something works out. That literally makes me a better musician/artist.
>>69965876
>I still hear a difference
Yeah, we've established you have no idea what the fuck you're actually hearing or what's happening when you plug in the dummy plug. If you did then you certainly wouldn't be in here making a fool of yourself in front of people who do know what you're hearing, what's happening, and why. You look like a rube right now.
>>
>>69966007
Considering your attitude, I guess someone plugged your ass.
>>
>>69966007

>literally makes me a better musician/artist

yeah...
now I don't wanna sound rude, but I've played with plenty of guitarists, some of which knew everything about their gear, they even created some of their own pedals and could easily troubleshoot a defective head
moral of the story, some of them lacked personality (not technique) thus being self glorified physicists
I'll step back on my previous statement. Knowing how your shit works won't harm you and probably you'll save some money not breaking your truss rod, or burning your head down
but once you know the basics, and you're not DEAF, you are just twisting fucking knobs, you get to hear what is coming out of your chain and decide by yourself if you like your tone or not. I mean, knowing how a server works won't you automatically make you better at google searches

The best musicians I've played with just didn't give a fuck about the electronics of the pedals they were plugged into, but they all shared one quality, they were humble.

and sorry for my broken english
>>
>>69966121

This is one of the greatest advices you can give a guitar player to be honest. Even though you bring it kinda rude. The internet is completely useless for anything on guitar and amps ever.
>>
>>69962259
I got a Dave Mustaine Flying V (the basic one) as my starter guitar and while it is ok its kind of uncomfortable and the clip on strap I have on it isnt straight due to the top peg being on the back of the guitar.

I really want to get a good value 'Les Paul' style electric guitar in a nice black and white colour scheme.

I have a unbranded Les Paul knockoff already, that isnt too bad, but it is heavy as fuck.

Any ideas? I just want something thats slick to play on and sounds nice. A good all-rounder.

Pot meet kettle.

Seriously though, you having a little emotional meltdown like this over someone on 4chan pointing out how not knowing shit about your gear is detrimental to the goal of playing the music you want to hear is completely ridiculous and pathetic.

Note to everyone: take advice from amateurs like this in these threads at the peril of your progress as an artist.

I played classical guitar and my teacher told me to strike the strings at an angle. It sounds better but I don't know why.

So instead of your finger strokes being perpendicular to the strings you want to stroke along the strings from the direction of the neck to the direction of the bridge. Also grow your nails a little bit or use finger picks, makes a big difference

Serious question to all bassists in the thread
I was considering going all tube, and I was deciding between the ampeg svt VR and the svt v4bh
I like the vintage style and the lack of gain knob in the vr, and the price tag of the v4bh
Tonewise, they're both great in my opinion
My question is, how loud are these two 300w and 100w tube heads, compared to 500w solid state heads? I'm rocking the Orange terror bass 500 atm, with two 12ax7 in the pre. I don't want anything less loud than this

If you're a bedroom player then yeah, your amp is worth a bigger investment, particularly if you're feeding into headphones. Lots of EQ potential is great for amatuer studio set-ups too.

Gigging is a different story.
>>
>>69968564
EVERYTHING is important in your signal path, going from your instrument (bridge, pickups, strings, neck) your pedals and how you power them, your head (tubes and tweaking), your cabinet...
hell, even your instrument cables and pedal patches are important.
you can drop all your money on a great rig, but a single noisy digital OD pedal can ruin your sound
then again, it all comes to your tastes

Ok.

EXH Hum Debugger maybe? I have a Boss NS-2 but it's more of a gate than a noise reducer. I've always wanted to try a Ebtech Hum Eliminator to see how it preforms.

The ISP Decimator seems to be the standard for rock and heavy metal though.

>or use finger picks

The reason your teacher told you to strike at an angle was because you should have been shaping and smoothing your nails.
The left side of your nail, when shaped correctly, should produce a rounder, softer tone more pleasant to the ears.
The right side by contrast will produce and bright, thin sound.
Both have their places in music.
You can couple these ideas with the location and how you strike the string to produce a huge variety of tones and timbres.

But really a neutral strike should be how the hand naturally rests so the wrist isn't straining.

>>
>>69970340
Place of manufacture usually gives a good indication of the guitar quality. (only for factory built guitars though, luthiers are anoither story).
Ultimately there is no way you can know for sure if the guitar's good or not until you play it, quality control slips happen.
>>
I've some questions:

1.) Fender P Bass Bridge Covers - are there any that exist that do not require drilling into the body?

2.) Dunlop Crybaby Wah Classic Pedal - I've used it with my electric and it sounds great, but is it compatible with bass guitars thru a bass amp?

3.) Where to find good replacement red tortoise shell pick guards for a MIM Fender P Bass? My current one has the standard white (on a two-tone sunburst body) and I don't like the look of it. The body finish is poly, and the red tort guard I am considering would come from a website called "Pickguardian" but it'd come as nitro material. I know nitro will wear in time, so I'm hesitant to buy from that dealer (i.e. the guard will show the wear, but the poly body will show none and IMO that'd look stupid).

Thanks

Typically you'd want to put Fuzz in front of the amp and Tremolo and Reverb after the amp, i.e. in the amp effects loop.

depends on your store. I'm pretty shit at leads so when I go into a store I just play chords and songs I've written myself. it's actually nice because nobody comes up to you and talks to you while you're trying to try stuff out, and on the off chance someone does they usually say something like "wow, what riff is that?" and when you say it's just something you wrote it makes you feel cool.

bias here as a bassist but yes it's easy to get into providing your sense of timing is solid. you can get into a band with very minimalist skills

I've seen the V4 live 3 times and all 3 was a guitarist using it. I don't think it's used much by bassists and have become sort of a Fender Bassman because I think it's used as an easy doom/stoner amp due to the wattage and gain knob. I currently have a PF-500 and I'm looking for the SVT Classic. But since you have an Orange already I'm going to assume you play something heavy so try the V4 see if it sounds good in the bass

y0 what kind of cheap guitar toolkits are there?

Is this one any good? It's pretty cheap desu
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Werkzeug-Gitarre-Bass-Ernie-Ball-Tool-Kit-EB-4114-NEU-/162327908303?hash=item25cb7f4fcf:g:QPYAAOSw6DtYWUx2
Is there anything missing in that kit that I would need? Like I notice those big rectangle ruler things you see people use to measure the action is missing. Also there are no radius measure thingmajigs. Are those tools essential or can I manage without em. Really anxious to do my first guitar setup!

My guitar is a strat knockoff for what it's worth, but I'd like a kit that's equipped for any sort of weird shit I'm to encounter

If you have a drill and some vague idea of how to use it, you can make the necessary holes no problem. I'm endlessly confused when people fuss over whether or not a new bridge or new pickups requires new holes to install. It's the easiest thing, especially so when the new part will cover the existing holes anyway with no filling required.

Only valid reason to whinge about this is if the instrument is pretty expensive and you have an eye for maintaining value on the vintage market 20 or 30 years in the future.

The original is notorious for poor signal buffer when turned off. Dunlop does sell a version with true bypass now though.
>>
Say someone is playing a 1-4-5 in C maj
Now instead of playing the arpeggios could it possibly work to play the modes of the respective notes. So play C Ionian, F Lydian, and then G Mixolydian? Asking as a bassist.
I'm still trying to figure out how chord progressions work in things like Jazz or classical because there is a chord progression but it seems like there is more to playing a chord progression than hitting the arpeggios and the notes of them.

you play a squier tele and own a second guitar w t f? dude you ever think of this ... you could own 1 GOOD guitar instead of 2 cheap guitars?

Haha man I'm just messing with you. We coo?
>>
>>69975474

The polarity has to be correct on the power supply end as well. A lot of pedal power supplies have an extra couple outlets for center positive pedals for this reason.

about the old one with a shitty buffer,
Should one absolutely convert it to true bypass,
or is it okay to EQ properly, and use the tone of your guitar?

When I first started learning the theory behind walking bass lines I found it easiest to just learn a few songs that had different styles of them, then after that go back and analyse the why and how. They are pretty intuitive once you've learned a few and the theory is easier to grasp when you already know some of the patterns.

>Now instead of playing the arpeggios could it possibly work to play the modes of the respective notes. So play C Ionian, F Lydian, and then G Mixolydian? Asking as a bassist.
Yes.

Think about this:

You can play a CMaj triad over the I in C major. But if you extend the harmony, you can play CMaj7 over the I chord. Now you can extend the harmony further and play CMaj9 on the I chord. Extend the harmony further yet and you are playing CMaj11 on the I chord. Extend the harmony one more time and you're playing CMaj13 on the I chord.

Now if you look at CMaj13, it includes every single note of the C Major (C Ionian) Scale. You're just not playing the notes of the scale in sequence when you play a CMaj13 arpeggio, but all the notes are there. You're playing the pitch collection of C Ionian.

Similarly, on the IV chord, you'll find it's exactly the same but with a #11, giving you Lydian Mode, and on the V chord you'll have a b7 giving you Mixolydian.

So yes, it's very common to play modally over the changes.

Bud, alt-picking is the most widely used picking style. You're going to need to learn it unless you want to down-pick the fills in 99.9% of the songs you cover.
