how do you even play this, like can you only strum or if you can pick do you have to hold both the strings down and pick them both at once
>>
>>69858474
Yeah you can pick just fine. The strings are grouped in twos like a 12-string guitar, it would be hard to pick just one of them instead of both. Same thing with fretting, you just fret both as if it were one string. It's not hard at all, try one and you'll see
>>
>>69858509
might do that, i've heard them before and it sounded sort of cool.
>>
>>69858474
It's easier than it first looks.

Each course (pair) of strings can be played like a single string on a guitar - 12 string guitars and lutes work the same way

Last night I had a guy open my passenger door and sit in my car while I was trying to load up my gear after the gig. Thought I was his Uber ride. When I told him he wasn't, he offered to suck my dick for a ride.

I got done at 2am but couldn't finish loading up for another hour after because the place was absolutely jam packed.

Isn't a course a set of strings rather than a pair ? Like for instance you could have three strings in a course.

>>69858631
That's neat. Is there anything like a mandocello but with an extended upper range ? I could definitely see that working for black metal by the way.

>>69858867
That chart seems a bit wrong, Metallica is thrash metal (or trash metal in their latter releases), and definitely did not influence Punk, it's the other way around. Same with Motorhead.

No, it still sounds like trash without it. My bassist's amp overheated in the middle of the last song in our set not too long ago and everything just loses so much power. Bass is important, it's okay to admit it

Shit pictures I know, but I checked my intonation with the harmonic vs. 12th fret thing and it's near perfect, but my E and A strings are a bit sharp on any fret below 5. The thicker strings also don't go as far into the nut as the thinner ones.

I'm also having issues staying in tune but I also have ocd about that so it might just be me thinking about it too hard.

Should I sand and/or put graphite in my nut? How do you do the graphite thing, literally just colour it in with a pencil?

Some advice: try and identify the "core" of the bass line; the few notes that, if they weren't there, it would no longer sound like the same thing. Learn that first, play it over and over, and then when you're really comfortable with it, you'll have the confidence to mix it up a bit.

Of course, I'm not familiar with the song, so it could be that all the variations are essential in the exact point they're played for it to work. Seems unlikely with a Joy Division tune though.

Here, some times people just want more. Drop tuning doesnt extend the range, it just moves it. Take a look at this band, they're a blackened death metal band that has some of the best music ive honestly ever heard.i only found out recentlythat they actually use 8 strings. Listen to the first song off this album and tell me how much better used it is than some shitty djent band. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kni1H2idKOs
>>
>>69860451
For metal mostly. It's a bigger sound with less floppy strings that don't go sharp with the lightest touch.

Somebody who actually knows what they're doing could do some interesting stuff with the extended range, but it is mostly metal kids buying them to be BROOTAL
>>
>>69860525
HOLY SHIT MY EARS HAVE BEEN BLESSED
>>
>>69860504
Maybe some grunge where the bass is a little more prominent, I know I like to make my bassist work hard in my grunge band, and now I really want to plug him into a chorus pedal to see what happens
>>
>>69860283

Yeah your nuts slots for the E and A maybe be just a little bit too high, which will cause the fretted notes nearest the nut to be a little sharp. Check youtube tutorials on nut filing. Fortunately replacement nuts are cheap (5-10 bucks) so it's not a big deal if you botch the job.

To lubricate the slots with graphite, yes you literally just take a pencil and colour in the slot.
>>
>>69860283
>but my E and A strings are a bit sharp on any fret below 5.
then put on some fresh strings and get out a chromatic tuner and adjust it. you can find lots of videos on how to do it. it's not rocket science.

>I'm also having issues staying in tune
most likely it has to do with how you are stringing it. it could (most common) be a shitty vibrato / tremolo, or (rarely) be a bad tuner, a bolt on neck that is shifting.

>Should I sand and/or put graphite in my nut? How do you do the graphite thing, literally just colour it in with a pencil?

only sand to remove burrs if you are breaking strings at the nut / bridge. pencil will do if you want to graphite the nut but it us usually unnecessary unless you are frequently changing tuning or using lots of vibrato / tremolo.
>>
>>69860368
Inline 8 headstocks are disgusting.

>>69860413
Muting lower strings on an extended range guitar is really easy actually, it's an extension of the same palm-on-the-strings technique you use with a 6 string, or you can barre without fretting so that you mute the strings you're not playing.

>>69860431
djentkids and their obnoxious praise of ERGs, combined with the massive ego of guitarists/bassists with hurt feelings.

>>69860451
There's some neat rhythmic stuff you can do on the lower strings that you can't really do on a bass, and the extended range opens a huge amount of possibilities.
Also classical.

Any drop tuning has two extra semitones compared to its standard counterpart, but you're almost there. More strings extends the range further.

B Standard is a thing, which has less range than Drop B, on a 6-string

You don't need an 8 string for that, there's a lot of 27" baritone 6 strings, and kallium does some ridiculous gauges if you're too poor to buy a baritone. Hell, there's even three different Bass VI models on the market, one having humbuckers, in case you want that 30" scale lenght.
>>

What Gibson should I get? Budget £500
>>
>>69860418
So I've actually just listened to it and it's actually really simple. The basic riff (the one he plays very first) is made of three notes - A, C# and D (open, 4th and 5th fret on the A string) and as far as I can tell the only other notes are the G# and higher A (6th & 7th on the D string) so you can probably get away with pretty much anything as long as you stick to those five notes.

In fact, those five notes are all part of the A major scale, so if you want to really mix it up and add your own touch maybe try experimenting with other notes from that scale?

Okay first start by widening the E and A slots slightly so they are seating better on the bottom of the slot. You can do this with the strings instead of a file. Just rub the string back and forth against the sides until there is a bit more room. Tune back up and check intonation. Sometimes that's all it takes.

Hey, family.

I've realized that the digital environment and limits of Ableton is somewhat crippling. I feel like I need to extend my arsenal of sound generation.

Hence, I'm looking for a guitar with an amp and probably some FX pedals. I like the works of Grouper, 55 Cancri E (https://soundcloud.com/55-cancri-e) and Swans.

Do you have any advice? I'm very much a beginner as far as playing the guitar goes, but in a studio environment/arrangement session I could probably make something good if I'm just able to create sound with MASS and BODY and CHARACTER. I hope that's vague enough for you. Advice PLEASE!

(I'm also on a relatively tight budget, but I can probably find some things on eBay etc.)

guitar centre is usually ok. there are some horror stories as with any big chain.

turn the guitar on its side (as if you were playing it) and look down the neck to the tuners. is it straight? or is it curving out to the right a lot? or is it doing like a roller coaster with multiple bends?

Well you frequently need a way to cut through the rest of the band when you're switching from a rhythm section to a lead section. You can do this with multiple overdrive pedals if you're going from a clean tone to an overdriven tone, but if you're already using overdrive then you can set your EQ pedal to roll off the lows and give it a boost to the mids which will have the effect of making your guitar sound louder and letting you punch through the rest of the band. It's not really something you should be using to set your base tone though.
>>
>>69862491
KISS predates black metal...

>>
Alright /gg/, looking to get a decent amp for band practice/live playing, nothing too huge, I'm not fixed on either tube or solid state or whatever I don't mind. Music I play depending on the band can go anywhere from rolling stones/Beatles stuff to 90's alternative rock, but in general it's all pretty tame rock. Budget being maybe in the $400 range or so, where should I be looking? Any opinions vs an amp or head and cabinet?

>>
>>69862934
what's your budget? I'd recommend a VoxAC15 or AC30 if you need the headroom. A Fender Deluxe would be good too, that's a cleaner and brighter amp.
>>
>>69862925
It's definitely overkill for your first pedal, and EQ is something you use to precisely tweak your tone after you've been playing in a band for a while and you need to be able to cut through in a way that the rest of your setup doesn't allow. If you're just using it to scoop out mids you should get an amp with a built in EQ.

How do I play like keiji haino, /gg/?

when I see footage of him playing, I have no clue as to how he even approaches the guitar. because I learned the guitar more conventionally, I pick it up and I play whatever in some scale, but it seems that he doesn't abide by any of that. what is his first thought of what to play, what makes him choose the other notes afterwards?

I've seen interviews with him (the cringy RBMA vid and the off-strings vid) but those only made me more confused. there's some things that I picked up in his off-strings video but I still have no clue.

any help would be incredibly appreciated.

Plenty of bands don't like them, but Black Metal bands did indeed get part of their aesthetic from kiss, though you could argue they really got it from bands like Mercyful Fate and shit.

>But I only like jackets with zippers to the side and chicks love TWD
I dressed as Negan for Halloween and literally did this. I grabbed whatever black leather jacket was closest to his, and ended up with vertical zippers instead of horizon. NO ONE NOTICED. Chicks might love TWD but show up with a Lucile and they won't notice zippers going the wrong direction

So? What's wrong with it?

To be honest I just like the jacket, my old leather one is getting small for me

>What's wrong with used clothes?
Some dude could've jacked off and wiped his dick with it and you're now wearing it

>>69865701
What for? it's just a jacket, nothing embarrassing.

Fuck, Kelly's are fucking ugly. I'd rather have an Epi Explorer for that matter.

Jackson's only good model is King V. But only THAT specific King V because the others have shitty blade switches instead of the superior toggle 3-way.

>>69865870
I got it when I was 16 and I'm almost 20 now.
But yeah I'm getting a little fat.

I know Line6 is widely known as a trash brand, but is the 120W 2x12 Spider III at least tolerable? I want a 2x12 amp and its currently the best deal I can find.

check out randall amps like the rx120rh
also look for jc120 clones, they're pretty cheap usually
check reverb for amps pre 1980 below 300 bux, most of it is trash but some good stuff can be found
>>
>>69865770
too pointy desu

disregard all previous replies including the one that said to 'wash' the fretboard. I mean you can do that on the back of the neck and the body carefully because the wood is sealed. For fretboard you can use the fretboard cleaner sold in guitar shops or naphtha (toxic) or just dry scrub it down with 0000 synthetic steel wool. Then oil the fretboard with pure mineral oil or boiled linseed oil. There are lots of youtube tutorials on the process.

Don't get water on your fretboard. It can warp it and partially dislodge frets.
>>
>>69866096
too late, already scrubbed it with hot soapy water
>>
Why does my nylon sound so empty?

https://clyp.it/2c4xa1rk

Is it just the mic? or is that tiny TINY TINY hairline crack actually making it sound like poo

Anon it's nice that you tried to help but this picture is hot garbage. I've been fixing guitars 20 some years now and I couldn't figure out what this was supposed to show or how you managed to make the pic look like that.
>>
>>69866180
then your work can't have been any good
>>
>>69866112

Okay get some paper towel and go along the entire edge of every fret to make sure you soak up any moisture. Then oil it.
>>
>>69862517
I've seen some stupid shit on /gg/ but this picture takes the cake.
>>
>>69862092
David Gilmour used them
>>
>>69863382
I'd put some strings on it.

Move that knob away from the pickup selector and get nicer looking pickups.
