I'm pretty sure the Pikes series (the bulk of his studio works) was a way to get a steadier stream of money while his parents were dying and in the hospital and whatnot

if it wasn't that, then he either knows he is dying (likely marfans) and wants to play until he dies, or perhaps he just has to constantly record as a kind of OCD or emotional release mechanism

when it all finally clicked for me was the connection between him not touring for a year while he pumped out pikes, and his history of heath issues and his mother also had health issues (the birth of Colma was when she had cancer) and then his mom passed away and his father followed soon after

Alright, you're improvising a solo and the chart says to play over Dm9 for a bar. What do you play?

>>
>>69369230

>>
>>69369270
By the way, those are descending and I forgot to mention that you should follow it with a nasty chord
>>
>>69369274
Wouldn't A Phrygian essentially just be D minor?

Or are you putting emphasis on the 5th, 7th, and 9th of Dm by playing A Phrygian?
>>
>>69369149
Not too familiar with his own health, as he keeps literally everything about himself a secret. Does he have Marfans? Definitely, but so does Paul Gilbert, so does Michael Phelps, and they're not dying from it. Of course, no way to know if Brian Carroll, which is Bucket's real name, is actually suffering because he doesn't let the world know about himself.

His parents though have both passed, which is terrible and sad, and I feel for the guy. Pike 65 is one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever made, and you can feel him literally pouring out his soul into the guitar in that song, which is amazing to me, because it's a heavy, shreddy song. Proof that Bucket can do anything he wants with the instrument.
>>
>>69369458
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68W6CiZbVnA

Listen to that to really understand the guy better. Brian Carroll is a regular ass dude, who just happens to be an amazing guitar player. Buckethead is like a character he plays, it's a persona, but he's not "autistic", he doesn't sleep in the mask or any of that.

I feel like he's one of the most misunderstood musicians of all time.
>>
>>69369458
Buckethead has taken quite a bit of tie off of touring for health reasons since the early 2000s, the onyl time fans know about ti is when someone like Bootsy Collins posts on social media that Buckethead is sick.
There is even footage from the late 90s onward of him with braces (European GR2 tour) and clothing meant for spinal support (2010 on compression shirt worn at most live events)

and Marfan's only usually becomes an issue when the body is already prone to being sick, leading to bone and heart issues in later life (usually age 35-40 onwards)
>>
>>69368885
>crying about crazyaga
>because he's so new he doesn't know about filtering
Why are newfriends always so hilarious?
>>
>>69369508
Brian Carroll is basically just a disney, horror movie and music nerd who is really good at music in general

the buckethead character is to separate him from his work to maintain freedom as a person who likes to go and do shit. It is also just a fantastic piece of performance art at this point
>>
>>69369543
He shouldn't cry about me aniway since i'm a kind and nice guy

Reminder that this is the only confirmed picture of Buckethead known to exist and it's only of him when he's very young, so it's not helpful in showing how he might look now, in his 40s.

Also, his dad looks like he's Mexican perhaps, so maybe he's half Latino or something.

I just noticed something cool that should've been obvious. I used to panic when I needed to solo over a b9 or #9 altered dominant arpeggio, but I realized I can BS my way through it by simply playing the dominant arpeggio, not messing with the 9th at all.

Now I'm just going to concentrate on making #5 and b5 altered dominants sound cool.

Keep practicing and try slightly using the side of your index finger to help you barre, and also try to make sure the thumb is positioned comfortably somewhat opposite your middle finger (so if the neck wasn't there, you could touch your thumb and middle finger together). If you have a guitar with a skunk stripe, I think it's generally good practice to place the thumb on or near the stripe.

>always absentmindedly lighting up a joint in my car when I told them not to in case the cops stop us and bust me even though I was not smoking.
>>
>>69373162
>>69371888
I smoke cigarettes, and I'm in a band with 2 of the biggest potheads I've ever met. Never have any of us called a smoke break, and we usually practice like 4 hours at a time. If we do more than that we'll take a break, but it's a mutual thing across all 6 of us.

I told them no one smokes in my car, none of them have ever even asked since.

Maybe it's cause we're all in our mid 20s, we're not trying to fuck around and waste our time.

We were working with one singer who would try to pull shit like that, he got the axe. No time to baby sit, no time to wait when you got a show in 2 days and this is the last chance you'll have to pull everything together and make it spotless.
>>
>>69373162
>>69373162
That's pretty damn bad man. I had a similar experience, except the other guys would always get drunk during practice and it basically got to the point where they just wanted to hang out for 12 hours a day 4-5 days a week and maybe get a total of 3 hours of actual playing in. And most of that was shitty playing since they were too intoxicated to play right.

Unless you think you've got something special going musically I'd say tell them to start chipping in money and spending more time playing or just find someone else to play with. You can find tons of musicians on craigslist.
>>
>>69373692

They were pretty good musicans, it was the only band I've been in that was able to improvise songs (music + lyrics) right on the spot when everybody joined in.
Eventually I left because there was too much bullshit, it was costing me a lot of money driving around for practice and gigs but was never going to go anywhere because they couldn't get their shit together and tried to rely too much on schmoozing other people instead of putting the work in, not suprising for people who couldn't work a normal job.
Right now I'm working on getting a house in the country with a dedicated fully equipped jam room, and then they can come to me. I've been saving for almost 2 years and in another year I should basically have it all ready to go.

>>
>>69373770
Right on man, at least you have a plan. If you can make that country house with a jam room work then that would be fucking sweet. Good luck with it.
>>
>>69373800
Getting drunk and stoned is one thing. Wanting to be in a band and just sitting around being drunk and/or stoned all day is another.

I'm sure there's been plenty of good bands who would hang out and do drugs all day and still managed to do alright. But in my experience the most successful bands are the ones who meet up and practice for a few hours straight and really work to get their set down. The ones that just want to hang out and occasionally play usually suck and go nowhere.
>>
>>69373800
I'd rather get paid and get repeat business. As it stands I'm making like $250 a night.
>>

I just started taking lessons with no musical background or knowledge at all. I've played guitars in the past but really only know a couple chords by feel not by name or sound. Same with bar chords. I know how to do them I just don't know the difference between major/minor and what key Im in and all that. My first lesson was last week and my teacher gave me a couple sheets of paper with a couple variations of the pentatonic scale, showing bar chords in major and minor and what key they are in based on what string your playing from (6th or 5th). He told me to practice the scale with an a minor/c major backtrack. I really think it's too much too soon. I can barely play the scale fluently without hitting the wrong string and fuckin up my fretting. My posture was all fucked up and thankfully he told me how to correct it. Should I just let him guide me however he sees fit or should I speak up and say I feel like he should slow down with me?

So my bandmate and I are starting to play some shows and with $600 we need a good Electric-Acoustic and an amp. We prefer to split the cost for each at a good $250-300. I tried to refer him to Music Man amps like mine but they seem to have risen an extra $200 since I last saw. I was also looking into Jazz Choruses or a Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville. Not so sure on the guitar yet we were thinking something Korean, Japanese or American.

Better than the originals? Have you tried an original D'Angelico?
Also, nice auto.
>>
>>69376812

I'm just using reaper, I start off putting in the song to cover and add a click to queue it in and start adding the layers, playing off the original song. Perhaps this is not working as good as using just a click track but I fucking hate playing to a click.
I'd rather not cheat to fix the mistakes since I see this as a vehicle to hammer out the remaining sloppyness in my playing as you say.
You cant properly hear your playing until you listen back.

You're making a joke but I really wish I could. If I ever really "make it" I think I'd like to do exactly that, give away guitars (or musical instruments) for free to people who couldn't afford them otherwise. I'm not in a financial position to do that right now unfortunately.

I think I'm in the same boat with a lot of other players, I've read over and over again about famous guitarists who had one main magic ass baby that they didn't want to be separated from. Brian May, Billy Gibbons, Santana, etc.

It's a ''79. That's the ultimate kicker too, it was obviously put together by people who didn't give a fuck. It is hands down the ugliest, poorly constructed piece of shit you'll ever find.

But the "magic" isn't a feeling at all on this one, it's the sound. Indescribable. My sound. I've actually been in my friends project studio when they were listening to samples of chopped up experimental music and recognized my guitar in a mix I didn't actually play on. He had taken some of my raw tracks and cut them up and placed them into a song and I could still pick out my guitar distinctly.

The thing is it's my guitar's sound more than it's me. Sometimes I don't know if I should feel sorry for people who actually believe "tone is in the players hands" or me because I know that's not really true at all.
>>69379431
I know it'll never really be over because magic ass guitars are rarer than hens teeth. I feel bad for the people who will probably never experience the truth, but if they don't know then they don't know. You can't blame them for something they can't help.
>>

My dude, I'm in no delusion about magic wood and the biochemistry of trees of yesteryear. It's just a fact.

It's such a double-edged sword I might add. I've known at least one par-for-the-course player who thought he was so nice but it was really just a freakishly good guitar he owned. As in, every note it produced SOUNDED good. It was actually kind of funny to see his charisma disappear upon picking up literally every other instrument.
>>
>>69378968

That's another asskicker, it still sounds like my guitar even when I change out the pickups. I've got Seymour Duncans in it right now though, I like them the best in it. It's kind of like it's singing and changing the pickups is kind of like changing the mic in front of a great singer. That's why I preach tonewood, I don't have any other explanation for it.

Tonewoods are a bullshit lie created by guitar companies so they can sell overpriced stuff to dentists but anon isn't wrong you can't just mod some Squier into a perfect guitar. There are some funny stories involving Buckethead floating around. Here's a quote on his wiki page from Ozzy Osbourne regarding Ozzy offering Buckethead a spot on tour with him:

>"I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me, but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later, and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing! I said, 'Look, just be yourself.' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum, then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up'? Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker."[26]

At one point in my life I would have agreed with you but I'm a tonewood convert now. The thing is my Les Paul was considered garbage when I bought it because it was built in the 70s and I payed less for it than I did for my American Tele. Tonewood isn't necessarily expensive but it is rare as fuck apparently. I'd easily pay three or four times what I originally payed for a backup spare at this point.

Sure you can. Just the amount of things you need to replace are such that what's left is maybe only 30% of the original guitar. Maybe 50% if the pots and capacitors are okay. As long as it isn't made of literal plywood and the neck isn't warped, it's doable. The issue is cost and whether it's worthwhile to do that kind of overhaul or spend some extra for a mid-tier guitar that does not need as much done on it.

See, this is why I don't mention tonewoods very often, because I get completely irrational responses like this. I already stated My 30+ year old guitar was bought used and very cheap. Not sure what guitar industry "scam" you could reasonably think I fell for.

I really hope when he retires he writes a biography because it would be hilarious.

He's also really in to the Wu Tang Clan and loves ODB. He was also good friends with Shawn Lane.

nigger I got one word for you: molecules
>>
>>69380899
If I were to mod a squire for best tone and playability possible with no consideration for nice feel on the secondary parts I would do something like this. Also assuming usual Squier materials; basswood or agathis or something body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard:

>replace bridge
>replace nut
>level and crown frets
>file fret ends
>change pickups but keep existing pots and switches if they are functional and not interfering with actual sound output
>clean up wiring as needed
>keep original tuners because even though they feel terrible they do still work
>the usual setup adjustments you do on every guitar + fresh set of strings

That will give you a comfy to play guitar that sounds pretty close if not exactly the same as any US Fender.
>>
>>69381254
>bang hickory drumstick on table
>nice noise with percussive attack
>bang maple(not even sure that shit's maple tho) neck on same table
>boring bland noise
tonewoods confirmed

>>69381278
Not molecules, but rather cells and cell walls. If you'd look at wood on a molecular level, the organisation would be very messy in either case of "high quality" maple and a "low quality" maple.

Right but how much of an effect that has on a solid body electric is pretty small.

I'm right there with you if we get in to semi-hollows and acoustics though. That's where wood and construction makes big differences.
>>
>>69381440
>pretty small
hmmmm so you'd admit they play a role then? highly suspect behavior coming from someone who's trying to deny the wood has role in an electric guitars tone. sounds like your contradicting yourself
>>
>>69381440
Its important for acoustics. I think its real for solid bodies in some small way but that way will likely be lost if you play anything other than clean through select amps.
>>
>>69381535
If woods didn't matter, everyone would be making their shit out of a plate of plywood and compressed old pizza boxes like Danelectro.
>>
>>69381440
>Right but how much of an effect that has on a solid body electric is pretty small.
And that's what ultimately the tonewood debate is all about. "Is the difference important enough ?"
There is absolutely no doubt two pieces of wood CANT sound exactly the same, but what's unsure is can we hear the difference beween those two pieces of wood ?
>>
>>69377125

>>69381156

>>
>>69381568
this. if fender could sell plastic guitars made from recycled diapers they would. they're made from wood for a reason
>>
>>69381680
Look! It's a guy that doesn't have a counter argument.

I bet you own a Danelectro too.
>>
>>69381618
I think everything else from the wiring, to the pickups, to the amp and so on are likely more important in determining if you can actually hear it at all.

I guess you could say I'm a believer in it but I'm really suspect of anyone who says they can hear the difference any way other than playing unplugged and who wastes their money on a top of the line electric guitar to just play it unplugged.

>>69381535
Yes. Wood type will affect the vibration of the string in combination with the nut and the bridge. I think it's a small thing but it is a factor of course. Like i'm not going to be saying hey plywood or plastic or whatever is just as good as a couple pieces of solid wood glued together to form the usual solid electric body.
