How much do you guys need fret inlays? I'm putting together a custom build and don't know if I should go completely inlay less. Usually side dots are enough, but in some dark venues I feel like I need something to see on the top too.

They already are back in style. It's way cooler too play a strat than an offset right now.
>>
>>69383650
I think you should at least put one on the 12th. I don't really look at the fretboard, but having the 12 is a good reference when your moving all around.
>>
>>69383650
Couple of years ago I bought a guitar with sole inlay being on the 12th fret. Took a week to get used to.

Dots aren't that big of a deal when it's primarily muscle memory that drives your hand.
>>
Who does the best equipment demos?
>>
>>69383650
They're nice, but ultimately side dots are enough. And even then once I get into the right position I can move about freely without looking. Try this. Put painters tape in between all your frets. All of them, so you don't look for patterns. See you you can play like that.
>>
>>69383650
Dots on the side are necessary, as well as an inlay on the 12th. Anything else is a bonus

Is that the Steve vai one? I couldn't get through it.

What did help me though, years ago, was John petruccis rock discipline. I liked it a lot because they made very good warm up exercises, and a lot of them are basically the same. The focus is picking and finger independence. One part is all a major arpeggio that you move across the neck atonally and pick it differently. All down strokes, all up strokes, sweep, alternate, skip 1 string, skip 2 strings , etc.

I haven't practiced those in years, but I made a lot of progress with it.

okay /gg/ i need your help.

Bought a Tour TKO 115 back in like 2012, stopped playing for years and just left it in my living room. when i moved it upstairs i noticed the smell, my cat fucking pissed on the thing, right in the front where the speaker is. i plugged in and noticed an idle hissing, didn't even have to play, then i unplugged the chord and the hissing was still there. no sound option could fix it.

it sounds like it's coming from the tweeter (that's what theyre called right? market it on the pic). so what can be done to fix this and how much will it cost me?

NO THE HISSING IS NOT MY CAT

Still no answer. Honestly, could be 4 things I think. The noise was always there and you didn't notice it then(happens all the time), it's a bad capacitor, there's a bad ground in the amp, or there's something on that circuit causing noise.

1. Nothing you can do.
2. If it ruptured it'd be noticeable, but unless it was several years old I doubt it, would need to be desoldered and replaced.
3. Wire might have came detached, has to be reattached.
4. Try plugging in it on different circuits. Ground loops, computers, tvs, fluorescent lights, and a ton of other things can introduce noise into a circuit. If your amp has a switch that says ground lift press it and see what happens.

No, they're not. What the fuck are you talking about? It's clearly a tweeter
>>69383993
A hissing tweeter is a common problem with midrange cabs like this one. Amp manufacturers like to put shitty tweeters to cut the costs. Chances are it was hissing straight out of the factory but I could be wrong. A new tweeter will cost you about 50 to 100€.

Dug up an old Video.

Running a 1979 Guild S-70 into an Epi Valve Jr head with a NOS Sovtek and a new EXH tube, chained with my 1986 Peavey Envoy 110, into a 1989 KMD GV412-S.

Stylistically, I've changed since then. I wish my homeboy from this video wasn't in the army now. I miss those times.

Sadly, most of the gear I used back then was sold off when my family hit some hard times, even my beloved S-70.

Amateur mistakes you made?
Used big wire cutters to cut string ends, didn't pay attention to the tips, which had a string between them. That was like 12 years ago. The guy at the store asked me why I needed 1 string the same day I bought a pack.

Couldn't figure out why my amp wasn't making sound, checked everything, messed with levels, messed with pedals, realized I never plugged my 18volt pedal in that's not connected to my power supply. That was 4 months ago, during soundcheck, no one noticed cause they were talking trash about the chick the bass player brought, including him.

Share, no one's perfect, we all did something dumb at one point. It's funny now.
>>
>>69385849
You're out of tempo, and not just once, do the retakes. At 1:23 you're dragging so much a deaf person could notice that. The tapping (?) intro has an uneven tempo as well. Is there a melody there? I can't tell. If it's just improv, it's very bland, you're just playing B minor pentatonic scale. Also, if you're gonna use that screeching hi-gain tone, you better throw some fast runs in there for spice, otherwise mellow you tone out a little bit.
>>
>>69386120
Well I'm not really sure but I'm mostly interested in Dinosaur Jr.-esque noise rock, the sort that's heavily distorted. My budget is anywhere from 100 to 500.
>>
>>69386231
>Amateur mistakes you made?
I never used my pinky when working scales. 10 years later, I still don't use my pinky on leads unless absolutely necessary
>>
>>69386272
That's not just an amateur mistake, that a bad habit. You have to use your pinky if your lead playing is any good.
>>
>>69386257

On the 4th string I was having a hard time reaching a D, by the time I was nearing it I had to put a lot of force on the peg to keep going, suddenly, my string snapped, turns out I was trying to tune it an octave higher.

Guilty. First time I changed my strings I thought I messed up because they were incredibly floppy. All an octave low. I just kept tightening them thinking i would still be able to play it again even if the tuning was wrong as long as i got them tight again. Eventually got it in tune. I thought my tuner was broken. Next day they were floppy again and I thought I broke the neck over tightening them. Next time I got to a computer I looked up whatever I could and found out I was just dumb.

The big difference here is if you have a PC and want to learn "visually". I recommend you do research on both to see what fits your style along with looking up what Rocksmith is. (assuming you have PC, PS4, XboxOne, ect.)
As for shopping, I would recommend going into the store to purchase, as you can ask questions and get a better refund if it doesn't work out.

Not anymore. I learned a long time ago not to settle. If I can't clearly decide between 2 or more options I walk away. When I find the perfect guitar for me I don't have any doubt in my mind.
>>
>>69387430
They're the best for when you need a good backup guitar on the road. Nice thing about Jackson low end guitars is that they don't flat out tell you on the headstock like having a Squire or Epiphone, or Ibanez gio. Although those aren't bad for the price either.
>>
>>69387430
I have that still (and use for aesthetic recording, I'll explain) but what had happened was the back pick up caved in up by the E, A, and D strings. So when I kick the tone back and turn on a lot of gain, I get this almost Tame Impala-ish tone. Turn the tone knob up and instantly a sort of Paranoid like distortion

16 year old me with his first guitar was a raging fool. Some highlights,

>it was a couple years before I learned how to adjust intonation
>several weeks before I realized the dive bombs i was doing on the trem were causing my (already out of tune) guitar to go (further) out of tune.
>I once checked my guitar in to baggage on a flight in a soft case. It wasn't even padded. Lady at the counter asked me repeatedly if I was sure, I insisted it was fine. Through some stroke of luck or baggage handlers taking pity on my stupidity, the guitar survived
>attempted to change pickups with only the briefest glances at an article on 'how to solder'. Had no wire strippers. Tried to use a pocket knife. Had to take guitar in to a tech to fix my many mistakes.
>first pedal: Boss Metal Zone
>first song (sort of) learned: Enter Sandman

I'm 33 now and there is nothing I would enjoy more than going back in time and slapping 16 year old me in the face. Better yet make that a full force punch to the nose.
>>
>>69387390
Ibbys are kinda the same, I honestly think they expect everyone that plays them to eq their amp like a metal player, and the muddiness is and attempt to make it sound full even with scooped mids. I haven't had a guitar with stock pick ups in years. I keep them for a month or 2 and change them out. I might get one just to mess around with.
>>
Has anyone here done one of those pay monthly plans with Guitar Center or Sweetwater music or some other site/store? I've seen them before where it was like pay $100 a month until it's payed off but now it looks like they're offering 3-4 year plans where you only pay as low as $20 a month for an extended period of time.

I've been looking to get a $900 Fender Jaguar and seeing the "Only pay $20 a month" looks appealing but seems kind of sketchy to me. Anyone doing that yet? Should I avoid it?

Exactly. I'm surprised by the low quality. But I was amazed how how much they dropped off in quality over just the last few years. My 2011 Dinky pickups aren't great, but they get the job done. The 2015 one? Unplayable with stock pickups. Unless of course, like you said, I were to play just muddy generic Metal.

I would say don't do it unless you're hopelessly impatient and can guarantee those payments. I asked about it at Guitar Center out of curiosity and apparently what you can do is put as much of a downpayment as you want. So if you want to walk out that day with the guitar and spend nothing then you got it but the montly payments will be high. You can put a few hundred down to lower them but that's your only chance to do that.

After that, you have a minimum price to pay monthly and you can pay extra if you want, to try and get it payed off faster, but the price you have to pay monthly is locked.

The real problem though, is that if you miss one payment you have to pay like 30% interest on the whole thing. So there's a good chance they'll fuck you over at some point and you'll end up overpaying like crazy for the guitar.
>>
>>69387541
Financing is a sucker's deal. Never buy what you cannot pay for in full up front. Unless it's a house, and even then with the current economy I don't recommend that either.
>>
>>69387541
If you're responsible with money it's great. If you get on one of those no interest if you pay it off plans.

Rules:
Have enough money put back to at least pay half of it off. So $450 for your jaguar.

Never miss a payment

Never have multiple things you're paying on.

Don't over buy, if you can't pay it off in 2 months don't do it.

Over pay. They say pay $20? Pay $60. Pay $100 of you can afford it.

My mind set is its better to have more money on hand than credit, but these things are designed to screw you.
>>
Daily reminder that if you're in debt, that's not Student loans, car loans, or a mortgage, you're a sucker
>>
>>69387659
Sounds like a good deal if you manage your money well. You forgot to mention that there's absolutely no interest unless you miss a payment. Besides, the guitar I want is only $900 and I can put at least $300 down on it so I would probably only have to pay like $14 a month and could probably get it payed for in 12-18 months.

Dubs speak truth. My thoughts exactly. The 30% interest if you miss a payment sounds like they might try to fuck you over, but honestly, there's so many idiots out there who will miss a payment anyway that they won't have to.

Ultimately it's a good deal, the question is how reliable the person buying the guitar is.
>>
>>69387531
Are you me?

>attempted to change pickups with only the briefest glances at an article on 'how to solder'. Had no wire strippers. Tried to use a pocket knife. Had to take guitar in to a tech to fix my many mistakes.
I thought for years you had to heat the solder, I never had to go to a tech though. I managed to scrape by by some miracle. I opened up a guitar I haven't touched in 9 years a couple weeks ago, belongs in /diys/ cringe thread. I actually stuffed a sock in the cavity to keep stuff from moving around. I used a razor knife.

>first pedal: Boss Metal Zone
Behringer ultra metal

>first song (sort of) learned: Enter Sandman
Nothing else matters
>>
>>69387758
I meant that $14 would be my mandatory minimum. Obviously I could afford way more than that and will ultimately pay it off faster. But there's almost no scenario I could see myself in where I couldn't muster up a measley $14 bucks so I don't miss a payment.
>>

>>
>>69387541
I fell for it. Just made my first payment. Like others said, it should be good if you make the payments. I set up an auto withdrawal thing so I won't miss a payment do to my forgetfulness.

I would only say avoid it if you live desperately paycheck to paycheck or could afford to buy the guitar by saving up just a bit longer.
>>
>>69387886
How does it feel to be a sucker? What do you think the odds are the "auto withdrawal" won't work one week like 2 years in and they add an extra five hundred dollars to your payment?
>>
>>69387839
Eh. If it means getting the guitar now instead of a year or possibly more I'll take the risk. I've never had a nice guitar and I'm tired of playing my Ibanez gio or Squire strat.

Besides like I said, at the worst I'll have to pay $14 a month. And most months I'll be able to pay a lot more. I'd be surprised if I didn't have it payed off by next Christmas.

He probably has mommy and daddy to buy him out. That's how you can tell the difference between the manchildren and the adults. The adult won't take the risk and knows the value of just saving your money up. The manchild knows no real world consequences and thinks "eh fuck it"

I guess you could say that. I'm a 20 year old college student who works part time. I live on my own with help from my parents thankfully but it's true that if something happened and I needed that $15 I could just ask them for it and pay them back asap.

But I think the fact that the payment would only be $15 a month is part of why it's such a good idea. Even in the worst case scenario it's only $15 bucks. I mean fuck, I'm gonna be paying like $500 on students loans monthly in a few years. If I can't handle $15 I'm fucked.

Because if you play scales at all, you will have to stretch your fingers for no reason, where you could've used a pinky. Go and play standard 1st position A minor arpeggio without using the pinkie on minor 3rd. You're reaching that note with your ring finger and fucking up your hand for no reason. Unnecessary strain brings more risks of disease and a chance of never playing the instrument again. Trust me, it's really easy to lie yourself and say "It's ok, other people do it too!" That's what most people here tell themselves and others. The only place you'll hear bad habits justified is on the Internet. And none of these people have amounted to anything. It's far worse to close your hand in a fist, and equally bad to rest it on the bridge like some strat players do.

I don't own the pedal in pic related, but it's also really good.

It has much more options, but the thing is, the empress reverb also costs twice as much.

Looking to get a Joe pass emperor ii PRO

all the reviews seem good and it's in my price range, really love jazz guitar but don't have a hollow body and I love the sound of them.

Do you think this is a good guitar to get?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtUD0XVS3UE

I believe this is the same guitar this guy is playing, I hope so I like the sound, not sure though.

That's the older made in Korea model, the new ones are made in China and I think in general they are of lower quality than the Epiphones made in the Peerless (korean) factory

If I were you I would call around to places with used Emperors and ask for the serial number. If it starts with a R it was made in the peerless factory. The Chinese models aren't terrible though, you will probably still like it.

I would also suggest an Emperor Regent if you want a more traditional full size archtop sound

People in this site ranked different guitar companies:
http://www.thetoptens.com/best-guitar-brands/

Their rankings, in case you are too lazy to watch the link:
1st. Gibson
2nd Fender
3rd Ibanez
4th Paul Reed Smith
5th Epiphone
6th Jackson
7th ESP
8th Yamaha
9th Taylor
10th B.C. Rich
11th Martin
12th Rickenbacker
13th Schecter
14th Gretsch
15th Mosrite of California
16th Carvin
17th G&L
18th Kramer
19th Washburn
20th Les Paul (people in the comments are mocking the person who made this entry since it's a model, not a brand)
>>
>>69392931
The way it appears to me, the "Les Paul" entry talks about the person who is called les paul, as a guitar Luthier.

"upgraded" the pickup on my shitty guitar. (but now I have something that sounds good if I set my action miles high)
bought a cheap distortion pedal so I could play some big riffs, so now that I have a proper amp it's useless

thankfully I didn't make so much mistakes on technique, I even went for the thumb on back technique naturally.
I did however not learn how to count the beat with my foot, and now it just feels simply impossible to do so. I'm correcting it since I practice rhythm silently with some drumsticks, but it feels way too awkward compared to counting the beat in my head.

>>69388859
legato is always smoother if you're staying on one string (plus, no string to mute) and if you train your pinky you can play some wider, more "out" sounding chords.

Some people do, most do but not consciously. Sometimes a fat tone with no attack and no highs provides the perfect feel for a song, sometimes you need no resonance and high boost to actually make out the note being plucked, sometimes it works well to use 2 different sounds. If you took a punk bass tone and put it under a cool jazz track it would not provide the right feel.

I made a thread about playing off tune >>69393248

Something you can deduce from what i said in that thread: if you are playing alone, your guitar will sound in-tune even if it's not actually tuned according to conventional tuning, if the strings will be tuned relative to each other.

If your entire guitar is playing a quarter-tone down, and you are playing alone, i doubt most people would notice it without anything to compare it to.

What brands are good for LP clones? Wanna have a decent LP but I'm not too interested in paying for an overpriced Gibson.
Are LTD ec1000 and gretsch electromatics my safest bets?
Also considering buying a Burny, Greco or Yamaha if I ever come across one here in South America but they're really rare around here.
>>
>>69393360
For musical purposes it would be useless to pay this much for a normal strat just because it's old.

Just my opinion. you can get even an high-end custom strat for much less.

Also, for the record, a sun-burst stratocaster is one of the most common guitars. even if it's from 1965, the way it looks is just... normal.
>>
>>69393484
You know nothing.

Also, sunburst is the most common because it looks the best. Nitrocellulose>polyurethane.
>>
>>69393533
I've seen better finishes than sunburst, but i agree sunbursts looks great.

You can order a new, custom fender guitar. tell them exactly what neck finish do you want, it will cost you less than 11,000$

What about an Epiphone Les Paul Standard?

Are Yamahas really rare though? They imported a ton of stuff to south america n the 70s/80s. If you could find an old Yamaha SG series that would be the best for a true Les Paul sound on a budget.

There are fuckton of older cheaper BTBs. some of them are not neckthrough, and usually those are the older models without the upper horn cutaway. check BTB200, BTB400/4005qm and similar shit on ads.

My main gripe is that those older ones usually come with that matte silver hardware and I really cant tstand that shit.
>>
Whats a good beginner bass for heavier music like rock, grunge and metal? My friend wants something that has a growl or distortion or warvick tone, along those lines but he's poor as fuck

Should I just convince him to buy something more basic?
>>
>>69393905
used Spector Legend series
used Warwick rockbass series
used Ibanez BTB (longer scale with more EQ options, easier to bump mids for that growl)

for distortion you need a separate pedal obviously. if you want something cheap I recommend Hartke bass attack, digitech bad monkey or ibanez pd7 if you can find it. More expensive options would be Sansamp stuff or EBS Multidrive, but that is already 100-150$ turf.
>>
>>69393905
>>69393934
Define poor as fuck? If <300$ just get the prettiest ibanez SR and call it a day.
>>
>>69393891
I already know about them, but I've only seen a BTB400 listed so far. Didn't buy it because 4 strings are yucky for someone who basically sees the fretboard vertically.
Ideally i'd like a 6 string too, and those older models don't have 6 string versions too iirc.
>>
>>69393968
>Budget
>six string

Pick two my negro. You will think im memeing on you but harley benton got some ridiculously cheap 6 strings that are actually not too shit quality. Schecters can be also had for fairly cheap but I find them all to be ridiculously uggo tier.

>>
>>69393977
Yeah I know I'm kinda reaching for the moon there.
I've been considering the HB too, but the lack of general information on their precise specs makes me a little less confident about buying one.
I share your opinion about Schecter basses, but I've absolutely never seen one either in a store, on the craigslist equivalent, or even internet stores. The guitars I had tried were nice feeling, but ugly too.

I'm not in a hurry anyway, bass isn't my priority.

What does /gg/ think about Schecter as a guitar brand ? yes?no? Especially for heavier styles
>>
>>69394968
Yeah, built in South Korea right ? Is this a good thing ? Korean-made guitars are usually good-quality ?
>>
>>69395001
MiK for the upper models and indonesian for the mid tier.
Same factory as korean PRS and production strandbergs, I heard the quality's great for that factory, but I can't affirm if that's true or not.
The only ones I've tried were indonesian. Coil splitting and longer scale lenght on ERG made them very appreciable compared to the same priced 7 string Ibanez.
>>
>>69395001
Not really, no. Korea, Indonesia, and China might as well all be same shitty Asian place as far as electric guitars go. Japan is a somewhat different story.
>>

Picking up a Washburn PXL10 I have on layaway next week, here's my current project demos, I'm changing the composition for my next release and making the songs longer and have an actual progression. These were recorded with my Oscar Schmidt OE-20 and on a ux2 interface with podfarm becuase I didn't have a reasonable mic then, but now I have a dynamic mic and a Peavey Bandit 112 so I plan to go that rout with my future stuff, as well as throwing in bass.

I don't have the budget for a caparison and between a 'made in china' one and a 'made in south korea' I'd go for the korean one imo
>>
>>69395086
Nah, at this point it doesn't make any difference, China might as well be Korea as far as general quality of the build/QC goes. You'd only be right if the guitar was built 5-10 years ago.
