I feel the same way on guitars being small, but I wouldn't buy an 8 string just for that reason alone. Since 8s and bass 6s have apparently the same kind of neck width, it may also lead you to fucking up the string spacing when doing chords or arpeggios.
Have you tried some 7 strings ? Especially the longer 26.5" ones like Schecters or Ibanez RGDs

I think I'm gonna buy my next guitar from them, the prices and variety are much better than anything you find around here.
But I'd like to hear some input from someone who did business with them; shipping prices, shipping times, if the item arrived ok, if they're helpful and quick to respond to emails, how payment went etc

Just got two new picks. Wegen GP 250 to be specific. I've played Jazz III 2.0 for a long time and it started to feel that I need more stuff between my fingers. Compared to that Jazz, they both sound pretty much the same but because the GP is longer, there's a smaller risk of hitting the strings with your thumb, so chords can potentially sound better. Because of the length and round tip, it's not as accurate and agile but my initial impression is that this is actually better for me, because it feels more versatile. For fast and technical playing short and pointy is probably better but if you aren't a fast player and your songs aren't only soloing, I'd say this clumsier pick feels easier to play. For example you don't have to move the pick between your fingers depending on what you're playing. Tremolo picking also feels easier, because the round and beveled tip doesn't grad the string as hard. There's an indentation on top but not in a bad way like on the Big Stubby, so you can hold the pick closer to the tip. On the bottom there isn't as much patterning and the indentation is shallower, so the grip isn't as good but still good enough. The tip is beveled, which improves the agility a lot but lefties can't use this because of that. However, it says on the package that lefties can order a pick that has the beveling the other way around.
All in all a good purchase. Not regretting it yet. Thanks also to the Anon, who recommended Wegen.

Would anyone kindly share their training regiment/regular practice routine? I've been a casual player for years with lessons on and off, but I am ready to get more serious about my guitar playing. I know running scales is standard, but if anyone is willing to talk specifics I'm sure a few in this thread could learn a thing or two.
>>
>>68734644
instead of doing scale runs, pick a scale and write a small looping melody to practice faster and faster, it'll help your fingers break out of the dumb mold all boring lead guitarists follow
if you can't write anything, practice your scales in thirds, that way you can also know which diatonic triads correspond to a scale's degrees.
>>
>>68734644
Just playing is fine. If there's something you want to get better at practice that I guess.
>>
How much time do you take to change strings? I took one hour to remove the old ones, clean the guitar and put the new ones in. And I still have to stretch and tune until they relax.
Simple shit like this has no right to take that much time.

Oh, the pick is fast (wouldn't say faster) but I was talking about playing styles, when I said that in my opinion Jazz III would be better for faster playing. That's mostly because the tip is sharp, so it feels more accurate. Not really much point in speed, if you aren't hitting the right notes. My speed may improve over time, when my hand gets more used to this pick.

>Maybe you are holding the pick on a perpendicular angle against the strings?

Terrible advice.
>>68734644
I spent a while learning to play monophonic horn lines from jazz albums by ear. After a while the clean note to note runs gel into instinct and you stop thinking about the note you're looking for altogether. At this point my fingers automatically go to the fretboard and play the notes I'm imagining in my mind. That's how I got over the hump of my creativity being limited by my playing. Creative songwriting is something else altogether.
>>68734781
I don't think you know how this works. I'll take it though.

I do that too. Most of the time goes into winding the new strins, I think.
And that in the video is an acoustic. Not sure about steel stringed ones, but I really don't mind changing strings in my classical, it's the electric that is a bore and a chore.

Yeah, I used horns because there's a separation between my guitar's voice and the horns voice that I could easily distinguish when I started doing it.

As far as recommendations go just do yourself a favor and start with songs you're already fairly familiar with and start with those. The truth is no one can really help you learn to play, it's a matter of you putting in the time ans energy. A little initiative on your part goes a long way though.

Self-taught for the first year or so (with some background in other instruments). My decision to take lessons for helped me make a big jump forward. My instructor pointed out a lot of weak spots in my playing and cleared up a lot of things.

If you're already fairly comfortable with the basics, maybe just take a month of lessons initially and get as much knowledge and practice material as you can in that month. Then woodshed that stuff for a while until you think it might help to come back.

Either Ibanez Prestige or PRS Custom 24. I had a PRS some years ago but I had to sell it because I needed the money. It still breaks my heart thinking about it. Scale length is in between Fender and Gibson and the neck is quite comfy. The pickups are built for suble overdrive imo. I have an Ibanez with HSH now and I'm surprised how versatile this thing is. Thin neck, great pickups and a decent tremolo (even though it's no original Floyd Rose).

>experienced player's take
I've only been playing for two years and half, I'm not experimented so much, just a fancy wankster who likes playing hard stuff
back on topic, when doing that kind of two handed tapping, usually with the pick in hand, you want to keep the intervals simple in shape, for both hands, so the right hand's only going to be tapping the 5, 7 and 8 fret, while the right hand taps 12 and 10. Try to not move the right hand too much (but don't anchor it either) as you want the palm to mute the lower EAD strings. (you don't want to use a sock/cloth like a pleb, right ?)
Other than the small 7/8 fuckery, it's a rather simple tapping part, both hands stay in the same position and there's no large stretch.

Pastebin has zero resources on this

Thinking about buying a fretless bass guitar. Would you recommend fretless over fretted? I've also never played guitar in my life, so should I start off with 4 string or 5 string? Also, what separates a good bass from a bad bass? I've looked at the shop I was going to purchase the bass from and the cheapest one was this Rogue LX200BF Fretless Series III Electric Bass Guitar for 130. How much should I be looking to spend?
>>
>>68733160
never because i trim my nails like a civilized fucking human being anon
>>
>>68726748
I took lessons for a while. Maybe a year max, when I first started playing.
I learned open chords and that was basically it. The teacher was an acoustic guy and only wanted to teach me acoustic stuff and I just wasn't into it. I wanted to play heavier stuff and play electric.
I quit the lessons and taught myself from videos and have been self taught ever since. That was 10 years ago.

Honestly, if anyone could be considered my teacher it would be Paul Gilbert. I used to watch his instructional videos all the time and he was a huge influence on my playing.
>>
>>68739071
>Would you recommend fretless over fretted?
Both have their ups and downs. With fretless basses, the strings are usually quite now, thus making them harder to play slap basslines on where the strings need a little bit of "air" to resonate. However, nothing beats the nasal sound of a good fretless bass with flatwound strings. Especially if you're into jazzy stuff and Fusion, getting a fretless bass becomes obligatory at some point. Playing is also comfy as fuck once you get the note position down.

>I've also never played guitar in my life, so should I start off with 4 string or 5 string?
That's up to you. While having a chunky five or even six string neck is rather intimidating at first, you're more versatile because of that extra string because you can either tune the bass to BEADG where the low B makes downtuning for some pieces obsolute, or you can tune it to EADGC where the high C gives you a broader range in the upper registers for soloing. I started playing a bass with a five string and I don't want to miss it.

>Also, what separates a good bass from a bad bass?
Mostly the feeling. In terms of tone, you can make up a lot with a decent amplifier and maybe a compressor.

>How much should I be looking to spend?
My impression always was that fretless basses are more expensive than the fretted ones, so I'd take that into consideration. It's really up to your budget here but I'd invest a good amount of money in it. When I get a new bass, I usually spend about 1k to 1k5 but everyone's budget is different. In my opinion, spending more than 2k on a bass is either spending extra money for the brand name or for aesthetics. Apart from that, you get what you pay for.

Hope that helped.

>>
>>68739071

Don't spend too little if you're looking to play seriously, your first bass should always be an investment you don't wanna have your first bass be a shitty 100 dollar amp + combo Ibanez you'll sell later cause it sucks and then will always regret.

My
>exgf
bought a fretless as her first bass and regreted it when she realized fretted is a lot easier for a learner, ended up asking me to lend her one of my P-Basses. You can do it, but it's pretty much hard more and you'll have to train your ear real hard.
>>
>>68739613

the color is pretty boring to be honest, how much did it cost you?

mex strats are real workhorses, if you got it for <~$250 then you did good anon
>>
>>68737324
To some it looks better than dark woods even when it's worn. Personally I have no idea, how some get it to look bad, because on my guitar it looks literally the same as new after a year and a half of active playing and even on a 20 year old Strat my friend owned the fretboard had no wear. So personal experience with them suggests that you the wear happens only if you are Freddy Krueger and you don't have frets.
>>
>>68739701
I think the color looked pretty good. But yeah, got it for about 350 as Fenders are way more expensive where I live, which is Norway. This is actually the best price I've ever seen for a Fender in Norway
>>
>>68739493
5 string necks aren't so intimidating, they're barely any wider than regular guitar necks on some models; managing the muting with the extra string is another more important issue
6 string necks feel like you're trying to hold a beast though
>>
>>68739071
If you're new to bass, then you should stick to a fretted 4-string unless you're absolutely sold on a fretless or having more strings. Look for some Squiers if you want a cheap but good bass. Got mine for $150 when I started and it would still work if I didn't abuse the shit out of it as a teen.

well, i mean, of course an amplified sound that is being produced by pickups is going to sound different than the natural sound of the guitar, that's just how it works, because reasons

/r/guitar is a faggy place, but for anyone who's interested this a really good explanation of how guitars (Gibson here, but the same applies to other big names) are a ripoff.

>tfw gibson is a such a jew they teach this business school

Not necessarily.

>Compared side-by-side with more value-competitive guitars, a Les Paul had fewer features, an old-fashioned appearance, less versatility, was heavier and harder play fast on

that guy saying it has less features is kind of silly. it's not a swiss army knife. just because it doesn't have tremolos, locking nuts, only two pickups, and all that kind of stuff, doesn't mean it has less features... it just means the people who buy les pauls usually don't want or need it.

i don't think that guy plays guitar, he seems like he's just viewing a guitar as a product with features and more features is always better.

own two semi hollows, 3 solid bodies, one of my semi hollow has same wilkinson pups as a solid body, sounds completely different.
>>
>>68744886
The lower end 'studio' models of Gibsons are okay, value-wise. I have one of the faded LPs without the maple top, binding, fancy stuff, that plays and sounds pretty great. Burstbucker pickups, neck-through. It was about 800 buck. I won't call that a great deal or anything but it's a lot better value than the nicer models of Gibson with all the pretty aesthetic touches.
>>
>>68744040
My semi-hollow pretty much sounds the same as a solidbody guitar plugged in, not even gonna lie. Hollowbodies are a different story though, you actually get some of that acoustic sound coming through the pickups.

Are you sure about that? Is that your final answer?

Are they set neck? I forget. It's not a bolt on anyway.
>>
>>68745448
LPs are almost always set necks
>>
>>68745462
Gotcha.
>>
>>68745448
Set-in neck. In neck-through construction the neck piece goes all the way through the body. Firebird is a good example.

Why are people so butthurt about Gibsons. Is it just because they can't afford them? It seems da haterz spend more time hatin on Gibsons than actually playing their own guitars.

I play my Gibson at least 4 hours a day and every second it's a joy to play. Can you say the same about your Ibenhads and Yamawhos?
>>
>>68747398
Their CEO is a Jew and it just so happens that he acquired the company in 1986, i.e. right at the time the the price hikes started.

>>68747505
Because their guitars offer very bad value for money and the quality control is all over the place. It's an iconic brand, so people hate the current state of the company. We don't hate the brand, just the management.
>>
>>68747505
>they can't afford muh overpriced status symbol
>they must be dumb peasants
keep fooling yourself.
>>
>>68747548
They're actually better now than they have been in decades.

Have you ever played a Gibson from the 70s/80s? They're pretty bad more often than not. The only time Gibsons were truly remarkable guitars was pre-mid 60s imo.

Gibsons today are overpriced if you buy them new, but the prices on the used market are totally reasonable for an American made guitar imo. I guess I just spend more time playing than obsessing over small details. Most Gibsons really aren't THAT expensive to get so worked up at.
>>
>>68747602
Haven't played any guitar that's that old. Two years ago I went to the local music store and tried a couple of Gibsons, because I was looking for a new guitar. First I tried a Les Paul Special, which looked nice but the frets weren't crowned, so it was completely unplayable. Then I tried a Les Paul Studio and after a few minutes there was more lacquer on my thumb than on the neck. Both of them just felt cheap. The Studio even had warped pickup rings. Haven't touched a Gibson since that.
>>
>>68747602
The QC is still pretty patchy.

You definitely need to try a few out and compare before buying - they are still shipping some real dogs, but the good ones are amazing.

Perhaps that is the problem with Gibson: the lack of consistency - you can have two seemingly identical guitars hanging on the shop wall, one will be mind-blowing, the other a Friday afternoon special that is nigh unplayable
>>
>>68747548
It's funny how they pose as "the ultimate US patriot's guitars". Speaks volumes about "patriots".
