I have already given up, that was months ago.
All i did was memorize a few chords and tried a few exercises but it's just all work and no play so i couldn't force myself to keep doing it.
Maybe I could have fun with guitar if i could play something but if i have to study and do exercises for a few hundred hours first then it's just no fun.
>>
>>68749250
A few chords is all you need to play along to songs, but whatevs.
>>
>>68749250
you are the type of guy who need to jam before learning chord, you need the fun before the practice, and then it'll give u motivation.
Just play whatever that sound good on ur guitar, don't use chord, play with friends, and maybe later learn some easy music like punk rock.
You will want to learn more if it's begin to be a game for you
>>
>>68749445
>Just play whatever that sound good on ur guitar
Could you elaborate on this?
I think you're right but I'm not sure what you're suggesting. I can only play alone unfortunately.
>>
>>68749550
focus on playing on 1 (or 2) string, you can do a good number of good riff with 1 (or 2 ) string (sum41,blink 182, green day, Linkin park etc)
try some notes, once you get something you think is good, try to combine it like you will do for a sentence, try to make "sing" your guitar.
Then do it on every string, but only when you want to play of course remember that it's a game.
More you want to play, more you will play, and more you will get better.
If you do this some weeks you'll start to get the skill you need to begin to actually play what you learn with tabs.

If you don't like tabs try something like Rocksmith or Yousicien

>>

You can learn songs, anon. Look up some pop punk and commence the chugga. Three note power chords max, usually just two.

Don't give up.

>>68750187
Are you trying to use the pedals to make your amp sound better or to make a palette for a sound you want?

If it's the former, I suggest getting a new amp.
If it's the latter, then it's good for you to keep the pedals when you save enough for a new amp.
>>
>>68750187

I would save up for a different amp, if only because I have heard a lot of bad things about the Spider amps. Really depends on what you want to do, sound-wise, though.

I really like the Artcore line a lot. I had an AS-73 before that was great for the price. Definitely get an amp first. As far as tone goes, your amp is like the biggest contributor. A shit amp will sound like shit no matter how many pedals you put in front of it.

In ranking of importance for tone:

Amp>pickups>strings(gauges)>pedals>everything else.
>>
>>68751918
the way you attack the string with or without your pick is as important as the gauge/winding/tension it has

Not the anon you're replying to but yes. Try not to think in terms of 'how will this make me improve' all the time. Experience will always help. And also playing along with songs will teach you things like staying on tempo, listening to the bass and drums and locking in with them. It sounds like you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself right now. Try to split up your practice time a bit tp always include something fun and easy; playing along with easy songs, making silly noises with effects, whatever.

Music is a lot of fun and you don't need to have all your theory and technique up to snuff first before the fun begins. There are lots of songs that require very little in that regard to start playing. Punk and pop punk are good places to look. And also, you will learn the importance of palm muting when you play those genres (learning!).

>>
My guitar's E and A strings make a lot of noise when I'm playing power chords, it's not so noticeable when listening only to the amp but it bothers me somewhat.

Is this normal? It's kinda like some buzzing sounds, they only disappear if I play very softly, but what's the fun in that? It's not like I'm strumming that hard too.

Sound advice. It drives me mad when people complain about how their tone sucks and either have a cheap amp, shit pickups or haven't replaced their strings in 6+ months. Strings are the easiest thing to change and bass players are especially guilty of not changing them enough. Unless they are using flatwounds, then they can be forgiven.

Recording guitar mainly = Alder
Live guitar = Basswood

Personally I prefer alder. But Basswood is lighter so I appreciate that aspect. Although I believe it doesn't make a *huge* difference to your tone, basswood usually tends to help achieve a mellower tone imo.

I have one of these. Comes from the factory in drop C tuning.
It's made in the same factory as Ibanez Prestige guitars but costs less than any Prestige or comparable Schecter. Insane value for money. The neck is especially nice, because the profile is asymmetric.

Cortfag's entry level industry theory:

>The name at the top of the headstock means nothing. A guitar that you enjoy is a good guitar worth your investment.

>Always try before you buy. Buy online to save money, or support a local store which is better for the economy.

>Woods make no discernible difference in electrically amplified instruments. You're paying for a design. Acoustic is the only exception to the tonewoods myth since the sound reverberates through the top of the guitar, affecting its natural tone, and different woods do sustain differently.

>Samick and Cort make the majority of the world's guitars in their factories in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. All import Fender, Squier, Epiphone, Ibanez, PRS SE, Washburn, LTD, Schecter, Jackson, etc. models are made in the same factories with the same parts.
>Because of this, it is always a better value to buy a Samick or a Cort instrument instead of something they built for someone else.

>Whenever you purchase an instrument, pay extra to have it professionally set up with the strings you prefer and in the tuning you will most frequently use. These setups are typically needed seasonally.

>You should generally change your strings every month for guitar and every other for bass. This changes depending on the frequency of play, your climate, and the natural acidity of your hands.

>Do not start learning on an ERG. Start with the basics.

>You do not need to spend more than $200 on a new guitar to get something sufficient for starting out. Wait to purchase something nicer when it's certain that you will stick with guitar/desire a different sound and/or feel.

>It's more frugal to buy a good-playing cheap guitar and upgrade it than to buy a good-playing expensive guitar.

>Rocksmith/YouTube videos will never be better and more preferable to a teacher sitting down with you and showing you how to play.

>Don't ever trust a chain store employee. They are paid to sell you the most they can get you to buy.
>>
>>68750598
What's going on with that finish, you're not attempting a refinish are you?

Totally.

I don't want to get into the whole "Tone Wood" debate, but I'm always taken aback at how many people get a fancy electric guitar, only to play it through a Roland cube with a sub 12" speaker or a cheap Fender Frontman.

You can make an Epiphone SG starter pack guitar sound great through a Dual Rectifier, but you'll probably run into some difficulty making a Gibson Les Paul sound good through a Line 6 Spider.

No. Guitars with pickguards sound boomy, which I dislike a lot but you simply don't need both in the same guitar. It's like gluing the neck to the body and still using screws on top of that or using a headless guitar bridge in a guitar with headstock and regular tuners. They could have just attached the pickups to the pickguard or get rid of the pickguard and used only the pickup rings. Even better it they used direct mounting and got rid of both.

i-is that your gf anon?

>>
>>68757486
I like it because it looks nice, is really easy to clean, and makes the neck feel more "solid". I personally feel that the density of the wood does make the strings sound less dampened compared to softer woods like rosewood. It's comparable to maple in sound imo. Your pickups may or may not pick up that difference though.
>>
>>68758071
Well they do, because the routing and the pickguard form a chamber that starts to echo and resonate. It makes the guitar sound muffled. Self-denial doesn't help you here.
>>
>>68757404
Bingo. The only discernible difference woods bring to the table in solid body instruments is feel and look. Most of your tone comes from your pickups, then your bridge, then your strings. You will also always sound like you on anything, so your fingers do the work as well.
>>68757486
>snappy
Hehe.
You most likely will not notice a difference.
>>68758196
This is valid. Anything that affects pickups will largely affect your tone.

Shouldn't direct mounting your pickups and having string through hardtail bring out more of the characteristics of the tonewood? It would be closer to an acoustic guitar constructionwise.

Then it should sound good. Lots of blues guys used shitty gear and sounded great, if you have a Les Paul you're already doing better than half of all blues players.

Blues is one of those genres where your playing matters much more than your gear (unless you want to play some shitty corporate blooze like John Mayer or Eric Clapton)

Most pickguards are made of plastic lmao
Literally has no effect on the polepieces picking up the vibrations in the string. It's a fucking magnet. Putting plastic next to a magnet doesn't change the field produced by a magnet.

Is your brain getting enough oxygen? We're not talking about an electromagnetic phenomena here. You know how a semi-hollow guitar sounds different from a solid body? Similar effect. The pickguard also attenuates certain frequencies, which produces a muffled sound.

>>
>>68758751
What the fuck are you on about? You were criticizing and electric guitar for having a pickguard because you claim the pickguard acts as a resonating box.
Your argument works acoustically, but do you even know how an electric guitar works? The strings vibrate over magnetic pole pieces, disrupting the magnetic field and generating an AC current in the coil around the poles. This is the signal which is amplified.
The acoustic resonance which you claim affects the sound clearly cannot in any way affect the electromagnetic phenomena which IS the sound.

Are you a bad enough dude to play the fourth chord in this tune in standard tuning with proper voice leading?

Pay attention to the 8vb on the tenor parts, they're not actually higher than the Cantus.
Also remember the guitar is an 8vb instrument, which is to say that when we read sheet music, we play it an octave lower than what is written(this only applies to the Cantus).
>>
>>68759834
How does it feel to know you've wasted an hour of your life arguing about tonewood?

Alright /gg/ boys I need some help
I've been playing guitar for about a year now, so essentially i'm like a guitar newfag. I tend to pickup concepts very easy, at the level I am now I usually try to learn songs but ear, practice my Scales and modes and shit, I try to improvise alot as well but thats besides the point. The point is that I've fallen into a void I can't seem to crawl out of. And that void is practising, see I usually try to practice 1-2 hours a day but recently I've just felt VERY unmotivated, is there anyway maybe anyone had some advice for me regarding practicing?
Sorry for the shit grammar and whatnot.

Nope, it would be a G major chord like this:
3 x x 7 8 7

The reason is because the two tenor parts are 8vb, which makes them an octave lower than actually written(same way guitar music is normally read), while the Cantus is a normal treble clef which means that we would normally read those notes an octave higher.
It would look like pic related.

I've affiliated myself with musicians ever since I took an interest in playing, even before I learned how to play. This meant associating with a lot of pieces of shit, but the networking can't hurt and it mentally prepares you for tolerating a lot of manchild behavior.
The band that I play with currently, I technically knew indirectly from school, but met them at an open mic in a local library, of all places.
I would recommend going to shows and trying to find the promoter and asking if they know any bands looking for musicians, sometimes they foster an online community for musicians to do just that.
In a pinch, you could also go to a local community college and join up with a class band.

>>68760592
>how you met people to play with
I had one friend in high school. We hung out occasionally after we graduated, and he brought me along to a small apartment-party one time. There was a seemingly stereotypical dude there who brought an acoustic guitar. He noticed my band shirt, asked me if I played, then wanted me to play his guitar. 4 years and two albums later, I'm still in my first and only band with him.

I hardly ever went out of my comfort level to socialize, but the one time I did I got lucky and a band formed from it. If you're not a social person, you're going to have to leave your comfort zone and put yourself out there every now and then. Or since you're a bassist, you could probably just look online for Craigslist ads and shit like that. People are always looking for bassists
>>
>>68761136
At this point I'd say yes. You should start with something simple first and learn some basic electric theory. Pedals and guitar mods are a great way to start. You don't necessarily even need to know any theory for those. Just follow the instructions get used to working with electronics. An amp can even be dangerous, if you're not careful.
Reminds me that I have a Civil War Big Muff waiting to be built.

I actually spent some time tonight working on it.
I play classical almost exclusively these days, but I dabble in jazz in my free time.
Listen to horn players, it's great to take inspiration from them because they create melodies. Guitar players often get stuck doing scales and don't critically think about the notes they're playing beyond "is this note in the key."
La vie en rose(on trumpet) is a good one to start, try to emulate Armstrong's phrasing and create a variation based on the melody he makes.

You have to listen to lots of jazz to make it sound natural. Keep in mind way back in the 1920s-1950s most jazz musicians were drug addict blacks that never really had a formal education, the way they played jazz was through learning the language, being fully immersed in it and playing from the heart.

Eventually you start to hear the melodies in your head and you'll be able to easily play them if you really do know the fretboard as well as you say you do.

Charlie Christian is probably the best guitarist to study if you want to get a good foundation for jazz improvisation.

i heard great humbling advise from Josh Homme who I think a lot of people in this board at least appreciate his influence. i'll add my own tidbits:

don't expect anything from music. literally nothing. you play because you love music and you love to play. get a real job and work at it and play on the side. i work 2 jobs and go to school and still play for hours a day because i want to

i am going to record some music with an old friend and his band mates over winter, and i expect only ourselves to listen to it. there's no expectation. maybe we weasel our way into some shows featuring shitty local bands. only there because i love playing

this mentality is going to help when reality sets in on 99.99% of musicians (even talented ones) that they will never be famous and wasted years when they could have been at least getting some progress in another field

i'd suggest looking into location recording for film or live events (very underpopulated because everyone wants the camera), and mixing of any kind if you're obsessed with sound at music. at least you'll be around it

TLDR play for you because you get nothing

Friends, friends of friends, etc.

Slightly related story, there was an ad up in one of my uni's classifieds bulletin. It was a person looking for somebody to jam with. I wrote down the number and texted the person.

The person introduced herself as "Britney" or something (I just remember it being a stereotypical white girl name). I asked the person what kind of music she likes and whatever, and got pretty typical generic responses. I finally caved in and asked if she's down to jam, then she set up a meeting in some abandoned middle school gymnasium at 11 pm (with my guitar)

idk I had a bad feeling about it so I didn't go through with it. it was a slightly off putting experience

Im using a moderately dirty/crunchy tone for rhythm and I'd like to be able to step on something to boost this sound into something more suitable for lead work.

On a tube amp this is where a TS9 comes into play, but I'm using a SS Orange combo (that I'm otherwise incredibly happy with). My question is if distortion can be used here.
>>
>>68765904
All the pedal is doing is changing the signal so the answer is yes.

When I used to do it on my fender 15g I got a lot of noise when not playing when I had the amp distortion and the pedal on at the same time.

It had something to do with the amount of gain so I started turning the gain on the amp to 6 and the DS-1 knobs to 180 degrees. The noise was still there but bearable.

It was fun playing around with it.

Anyone else got any recordings of jamming with a buddy, or are you all alone NEETS?

Your playing sounds like someone who's been playing for 2 weeks.
You've made a track of nothing but error notes.
Try bending to an actual note once in a while.
Half this track just sounds like you raking dead notes by accident.
I take back what I said earlier about sounding like you've played for 2 weeks. This sounds like a 5 year old got hold of daddy's guitar and plugged it in.
Overall I rate 0/10. Get better.
>>
>>68767316
Sounds alright, but since there's hardly any tempo upkeep in your arrangement, I hope all of your boys have a very good sense of time otherwise I'd put out for a percussionist to at least keep sweeps on a snare or something just to keep everyone aligned.

Actually there is one thing I would change, when you start playing the heavy chords around 3:19 they come in way too heavy handed and it sounds abrupt (i'm very familiar with Ryuichi Sakamoto so it caught me off guard) . If it were me I would do a quick crescendo into full intensity. Otherwise it's a great arrangement, good job dude.

Kind of reminds me of Fripp's crafty guitarists ensembles.

saying outright "people don't enjoy it" just because you don't enjoy it isn't an argument, there's people listening to literal noise and enjoying it, taste is subjective

9 strings are shit as guitars though, the range's too big and is ultimately pointless

Why is it that chord progressions are the way they are? Why is it that I V vi IV sounds so much better than I v VI IV
Is there some logic behind knowing how the chord of a note in a scale should be or do some things just sound good a certain way and all we can do is learn/memorise what these patterns are?

music theory
>>
>>68757238
And you can hear a difference between two guitars cut from the exact same tree.
The difference between a pine guitar and a rosewood guitar is as great as the difference between two guitars of the exact same wood. The individual pieces of wood will change your tone ever so slightly, but your build quality, pickups, and bridge determine a very high % of your tone... The breed of wood is as inconsequential as dumb shit like stainless versus nickel frets, or bone versus graphite nuts.
>>
>>68771179
Everything your strings come into contact with affects your "tone"
Thats all I've noticed personally, anyway.
>>
>>68771063
>psychology
I would have rather said mathematics, intervals and chords are just ratios between multiple wavelenghts

>>68771179
>dumb shit like stainless versus nickel frets
fret material actually matters, SS frets will last longer before you need to re-crown them

>>68771213
the issue is not if it does affect or not, the issue is how much does it affect your tone

This is a large list, but which one would you get?

I already have a guitar so the bass is just a consideration.

Im mainly considering the rga72qm or the ka5-tc, but for the latter id need to get a bass amp or something right?
>>
>>68771262
yes, but im talking about why theyre interpreted as pleasing, which the math doesnt explain. Its the psychological aspect that explains that
>>
>>68771213
You're noticing things that aren't there.
Bridge, strings, pickups, and overall setup determine your tone to an extremely high percentile, with strings being less noticeable than something like a new bridge. Chambering of the wood can make a difference.

I've heard people make some dubious claims like the string trees, frets, nuts, and even type of truss can determine tone, but if you were to ever do a double blind test, they wouldn't know their favorite tonewood or a bone string tree from their assholes. It's a bunch of superstition that dates back to microphonic pickup days.
>>
>>68771262
Yes, frets do matter, but they don't effect tone. SS frets should be selected for the exact reason you mention, play smoother, and are basically indestructible.

But there are tone assholes that insist nickel sounds different.
>>
>>68771289
this is a very strange list of choices

>>68771396

>>how do you find the length of one the sides of a right angled triangle if you know the lengths of the other two?

>>
>>68771546
Gibson seems to come with a gigbag, the electronics are most likely better quality, woods are most likely better quality and work in the USA costs more. That being said, there's a good chance that the Epiphone plays better. Gibson's quality control is very inconsistent. So the Gibson can potentially be a lot better to play but there's also the chance that it's a lot worse. I'd still probably go with Gibson, because usually the issues can be fixed but on the other hand it would probably be better to look for something else completely.
>>
>>68771782
Alright. I just never understood how Gibson les pauls ,cost like two times the epiphones . Guess its better pickups and whatnot. I just don't understand how does one know what's better and what's worse.
>>
>>68771769
in that case the answer is "pythagoras", as in do some self study.
You could easily infer "psychology of chord progressions" or something along those lines.
>>
>>68771895
On those higher end Gibsons (or any other brand) the materials and building time make up most of the cost. Attention to detail, finish, playability and quality is overall better. For example frets are finished better and the woods are lighter but light mahogany is also more expensive, because it's more rare. The pickups are actually one of the least expensive upgrades.
>>
>>68771990
But what affects the sound , the most? If I'd want to buy a guitar , and I take only the sound into consideration. I should be looking at pickups, and the wood used to make the guitar, right?
>>
>>68772205
Tone shouldn't be the most important factor. Playability and build quality are more important, because pickups determine much of the guitars tone and those can be changed afterwards. And your amps is even bigger part of your sound. Wood matters depending on who you ask.

Buy more amps. I did and it actually made me a better guitarist. A tube amp gives much better feedback on your playing than a tiny and old solid-state digital modelling shoebox. Same with guitars, because it's much easier to play, if the guitar doesn't fight back.
>>
>>68772471
If you dont seem to be improving, as you put it; do something new. Like get good really. Focused learning on specific elements.
>>
>>68772398
Make peace with the fact that you will only see improvement by playing a whole lot, and that the more you play the faster you'll see improvement, but even then, it'll still be long periods of time before you see improvement.
