It's almost Halloween!
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Just listened to pic related. The Scatman was surprisingly based early in his career. "John Coltrane" is hair-raisingly good, and while the rest can be way over the top kind of hammed, there's good stuff throughout. It's a bit cheesy—maybe inherent to scat—but the songs were usually very enjoyable. The ones without vocals just fell a little flat, which is probably testament to his impressive vocal ability.

jeez finally
Hey guys, I used to be here regularly, glad to see some new and old faces. I took a hiatus from /mu/ for a while, but still listened to a ton of music.
Anyways, get this: I have been listening to albums regularly since I was little. Recently, I was called my dad to catch up, shoot the shit, and we came to the topic of music. I was talking about how I have been listening to The Replacements, and he was like "yeah they sound like me" and laughed. I had to ask what he meant, and it turns out he made an album when he was in his 20s with some friends. I asked for a copy of it, out of curiosity, and got a no. A week later, he shoots me a text saying that it was burned off of his cassettes, remastered and ready for listening. I threw on headphones, and oddly enough, it all immediately clicked. I wouldn't say I am as picky as a lot of people on /mu/, but I simply did not expect anything quality. The music was a little lo-fi, but not painfully so. Very Americana, and casual, even funny at points. Tfw the record your dad made and never got released is one of your favorite albums ever now.

Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus (1997)
>abstract hip hop, east coast hip hop, experimental hip hop
I'm not as big of an El-P fan as I was a couple years ago, but the dude's got some serious chops. His production is immaculate, hard-hitting while still being off-the-wall and experimental. He's more hit-or-miss as a rapper, but I love how he always sounds like he's about to go completely off the rails when rapping much master, he's got a choppy flow but I think it works really well. Bigg Jus is certainly the vocal star here, he's got a wonderful flow that melds with the production perfectly. It's far too long, as a lot of hip hop albums are, and it's occasionally a bit too safe for what it's trying to be, but all in all this is a damn fine hip hop album.
3.0+
Thomas Leer & Robert Rental - The Bridge (1979)
>minimal synth
A decent combination of weird, Throbbing Gristle-esque industrial minimal synth and floaty, dreamy ambient. They balance terribly, taking on totally different moods and aesthetics, but by themselves they're pretty alright. The minimal synth tracks are sometimes forward-thinking and hard-hitting, but occasionally get somewhat irritating, an issue which lies a lot in the high-pitched tone of the synths themselves. The ambient is nice and pretty but somewhat unremarkable, save for the slight dark ambient influences. Nothing out of this world, but worth a listen if you like this style or this era of music.

All of these albums were good, but I did have some gripes with the Amon Düül II record and the Lustmord record. Amon Düül II is a great band, but their live record doesn't show them at their peak, for the recording isn't too great and it seems like a lot of the tracks have been cut in order to make it all fit on one disc, which is kinda sad. The Yeti tracks on here are played fine, but the worse recording makes it hard to justify listening to them over their studio counterparts (however, the shorter and more intense rendition of Soap Shop Rock is quite cool and worth a try). The improv track and the tracks after it (which I wasn't familiar with before listening to this album) were all good though, so yeah, a nice enough record for the fans. Purifying Fire mostly suffered from the same problem as most dark ambient albums: it's cool, but its shtick wears off eventually. "Normal" ambient doesn't require full attention since simply having it in the background can be rather comfy, but since the point of dark ambient is to be unnerving rather than comfy, it doesn't really work as well once it slips into the background. Eh, still a nice record all things considered, nothing I see myself listening to very often though.
The other two? Great outsider house and great detroit techno, respectively. I could try to say more about them but I feel it's pointless since you'll know whether you'll like these records or not by looking at the genre tags.

Oneida - Each One Teach One
knocked me on my ass, those first two jams are legit 10/10 material, but the rest of the album sadly fails to live up to the energy present there... not by much, but there is a remarkable (in that I can remark upon it) drop in quality... repetition in the album both works and doesn't work but not at the same time if that makes sense...

Ilk - Zenith
>Merzbow – Material Action 2 (N.A.M) (1983)
A change of pace for the first Merzbow LP ever: instead of the loud, ear piercing madness of the past 12 discs, here the songs are more quiet, more subtle, more ambient.
“Nil Ad Mirari” features some percussions, a strange whistling sound, a violin(?)/stringed instrument, an electric tone and some field recordings. It is strangely melodic and dissonant, and definitely eerie; I really dig this soundscape. The track slowly gets more chaotic, with more aggressive metallic percussions, like bells and crashes.
Fairly simple song, with the first half being the best, thanks to those semi-melodic moments and to the atmosphere delivered by the synth and the field recording.
“Nimbus Alter Magneto electricity” is based on static and various electric tones that get slowly more layered and chaotic; percussions are also present. The track has a really nice progression, with a lot of synths degenerating into chaos, gradually changing sound, position and loudness. 14 minutes in, some fantastic strings are introduced in the mix, and they sound really, really good. The track ends in a very nice way with a duet of violin and electronics.
Again, really simple in the concept, but executed majestically: the production and noises are full of atmosphere and they really make this track; it is really a strange experience both to get lost in this eerie soundscape and to follow it very closely.
I really like how this record sounds: it’s a nice change of pace from the usual Merzstuff, plus it delivers some of the most intense ambiance I’ve hear from Masami.
Very interesting, check it out.

But this made me realise what I actually want to listen to right now is something punky, maybe heavy.
Smog - Julius Caesar
I should preface this by saying that there is very little lo-fi music that really grabs me. I love Ariel Pink's early stuff and a lot of Daniel Johnston's stuff, but the simpler stuff like this is a bit dull to me. There are some really tender lyrics on here, and it's clear that Bill is really wearing his personal issues on his sleeve. I enjoyed this aspect, but the instrumentation just bored me throughout. I did love Your Wedding and Stick In The Mud, definitely my favorite track. I absolutely hated I Am Star Wars, though.

>The Quick - Mondo Deco
This thing was so overly cheesy that it was actually kinda enjoyable at some points. Most of the lyrical stuff didn't leave any impact on me, but some of the songs did end up being pretty catchy. There are a lot of bizarre choices made on this album like using a super cheap toy sounding synth, starting the song no no girl with a super compressed sounding version of chopsticks, and ending the song anybody with some pretty chunky noisy guitar stuff. It's certainly an oddity with some charm, but i don't think ill be giving it another listen anytime soon 5/10
>Quickspace - The Death of Quickspace
This album was also somewhat bizarre. It set up lots of really serene soundscapes with birds chirping, but then have a loud noise rock guitar line blaring over it. There was also a seemingly random use of electronic sounds throughout that would kinda just come out of nowhere and overpower the rest of the song. The only one that i thought was used effectively was in the beginning of the song the munchers which had this weird alien sounding thing that fit well with the strange time feel of the rest of the song. My favorite song by far on the album though somewhat long winded at times was climbing a hill. I just loved the overall tone of it and the lyrics though simple and repetitive really painted a vivid and emotional picture. This album tries a lot of interesting stuff and not all of it sticks, but it's certainly worth a listen. 7/10

I've also changed my mind on Vanishing Twin's record. It just didn't have enough staying power to keep me interested after the second listen.
07/10 - IGLOOGHOST "Little Grids"
Listens: 6
Choice: Peanut Choker(+)
The quality of the tracks seems to be in a constant decline over the course of the EP, however the slope isn't particularly steep and Peanut Choker is an absolutely banging song so it's all quite good.
Not much to say about this, but as an aside the narrative tacked on to this is quite amusing.
GOOD
08/10 - BBNG "IV"
Listens: 3
Choice: Speaking Gently, Structure No. 4(+), In Your Eyes
BBNG have always annoyed me. I can never quite pin point why, but I think it's because I feel like they are all very talented, but they don't have terribly much creativity. It's nice in a way that they've branched out from mostly doing covers and I think this is their best yet, but I still can't say I like it.
The huge swathe in the middle of the album is a positive sleep aid, which- between `Speaking Gently` and `Structure No. 4,` only picks up briefly for `Lavender`. Happily, it starts and ends rather well, with the first two, and two of the last three tracks being quite nice.
BADNOTGOOD

Listened to the The Stalin/Hijokaidan live collaboration today. I'm admittedly not very familiar with either of them, but it was one of the best noise rock albums I've heard so far. Definitely check it out.

Some ambient and Sun Ra
Btw am I the only one that gets insanely agitated by constant repeating basslines in jazz? For example, on That's How I Feel on Lanquidity, its funky and all but it makes the track sound so much more static and less interesting to me.
>>68410757
/f's new album, probably some merzbow after that.
Bobb Trimble - Iron Curtain Innocence (1980)
>psychedelic folk, singer/songwriter, psychedelic pop
Trimble's high-pitched, reedy voice coupled with his smooth, agreeable melodies all wrapped together in this nice little fucked-up outsider package certainly laid out the groundwork for artists like Ariel Pink. Even barring his influence on newer lo-fi singer/songwriters, he's still pretty good. This album is pretty frontloaded, the first three tracks are by far the album's best, mixing the experimental tendencies of Trimble's with the poppy melodies to great effect, creating a surreal atmosphere. The rest of the album is pretty much just in pop mode. It's decent, sure, but unremarkable, and Trimble's voice doesn't fit these songs nearly as well as the more out-there songs. A mixed bag, but overall a good listen.

Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade (1973)
>european free jazz
Dark, evil free jazz. Almost completely escapes the confines of "jazz" as a whole, it's more just a bunch of improvised sounds made using conventional jazz instrumentation. Most of the time, it hits the mark, creating some dirgy, downright scary music. The instruments are in sync perfectly and the shocks of noise that punctuate the low rumbles of the percussion and the piano are timed perfectly. Some of the time, however, it misses it's mark, and it gets kind of annoying, to put it lightly. Parker's sax work is obviously amazing, but sometimes it's in such a high register and it becomes too squawky, for my tastes at least. Disgarding that, it's a damn fine, free jazz/improv record.

チャラン・ポ・ランタンと愉快なカンカンバルカン - ただ、それだけ。 (Tada, Soredake.) (2010)
>balkan brass band, cabaret
Interesting little record, to say the least. I'm not sure balkan brass band infused with j-pop is something I'd ever imagine existing, but here it is! Instrumentally it's pretty great, it's super bombastic and over-the-top with some great melodies, and I just love the sound of brass band music to begin with. The vocals are totally superfluous though, they tease the listener with the first 3 instrumental tracks and then add in some pointless vocals for the rest of the album. The album is also entirely one note, I don't think this sound really suits itself well to an album format, it just keeps on repeating itself ad nauseum. It's still a very good sound, and it's so damn energetic and fun I can't help but love it just a /bit/.

It's not really worth it in my opinion
I have yet to fully understand Eastman's method of reincorporating melodies on his "nigger" series, but what I can praise is the fact that his music gives off an intoxicating feeling of dismay and tense introspection. But that's just me.
The strings over the tubular bells near the end of "If You Are So Smart" are fantastic.

>>68412788
>something about the '80s performance is just too sterile for me
I'd say the opposite: I find it to be quite too much emotional. In the 1981 version it is clear that Gould is playing with his heart out and it's not just being bold and audacious as he did in the 1955 recordings. I have to agree with you that the latter versions are inferior, but the reasons are diametrically opposite.
>there are writers nearly dead that are way better than Dylan
true, but frankly most of them aren't ready to die as Dylan is. Plus, he is quite an influential figure in the literary world, even if some anons on some boards here say it isn't like that.

I listened to Torture Garden by Naked City today, it was so bizarre, yet entirely compelling. I was initially interested because of the grindcore description, and while I feel it was accurate, I was definitely more reminded of Ground Zero's Revolutionary Pekinese Opera than any grindcore record. But it's great! I gotta listen to it more. It's total balls-to-the-wall insanity, but I might actually wind up integrating this into my regular listening.

Havent heard his free jazz work but the jazz fusion stuff he put out in the late 80's I'm somewhat warm on although not crazy about. >>68425090
I see. I kind of like his fusion records as well, mostly because of the atmosphere he gives them. My main appeal with Sun Ra other than Glimore is the unique sound he has in some records. He's put out some pretty popular records in various styles and those manage to sound very different from other records in their same style. It doesn't always end up being that great though. Space is the place is just annoying for me.

09/10 - Xiu Xiu "Plays the Music of Twin Peaks"
Listens: 4
Choice: Into the Night(+), Blue Frank: Pink Room, Falling, Josie's Past(+)
Haven't enjoyed an album from Xiu Xiu this much since Fabulous Muscles. Being covers, they lack Xiu Xiu's usual habit of lyrically punching the listener in the stomach aside from the great `Josie's Past`, which works incredibly well for being "fit together and go." Still, the atmosphere certainly fits more with the feeling I got from the pilot (which I have *coincidentally* been prompted to watch). Where the score works great in the episode because the muted melancholy plays off the eeriness of the plot occurrences, PtMoTP works well on its own as it manages to capture both sensations at once.
Really lovely stuff and got me started on a really lovely show I should have started far sooner.
GREAT
>>68428441
10/10 - DJ Shadow "The Mountain Will Fall"
Listens: 2
Choice: Bergschrund, Ashes to Oceans, Ghost Town
Aside from "Endtroducing...", I haven't listened to any of DJ Shadow's other work, but perhaps I should. "The Mountain Will Fall" is a neat little mix of incredibly crisp production and old-timey samples with some relatively straightforward beats that makes for great ambient listening. Like Tycho's work, it's not something I'd often listen to with my full attention, but unlike Tycho's work, I can actually tell the tracks apart and follow the arc of the album's mood from start to finish.
A complaint I'd lob at it is that ends on this horribly dramatic bore called `Suicide Pact`, which is the auditory equivalent of having to wait 20 minutes for a first date to arrive in an overly expensive restaurant that doesn't turn the heat on for a rainy November evening.
