Okara - Months Like Years (1996)
>emo, math rock

Too sterile to be good emo and too sloppy and amateur to be good math rock. It's definitely got a certain charm to it, that being the "demo cassette made by a bunch of high-schoolers" charm. There's a lot of potential, and the instrumental performances are mostly good (mainly the drumming, which is par for the course with math rock), but they seem to be trying too hard to emulate their influences (Drive Like Jehu, Polvo, Slint) in such an amateur manner, making the album end up becoming a pale, emotionless imitation. The production certainly isn't doing it any favors either, it's at once too thin and too abrasive, which is never a good combination. It's enjoyable for what it is, and it definitely doesn't overstay it's welcome, but it's forgettable at best.

what are your thoughts on desertshore?
>>
>>68287395
I thought most of it was absolutely gorgeous.
The neo-medieval organ/bagpipe drone tracks were the best part by far. Nico's commanding voice really fit the mood. They sounded like some kind of ancient hymnals.
In my opinion there were 3 big missteps.
1. that song with the kid
it felt like pointless filler and the kid sucked at singing
2. Afraid
felt completely out of place.
all this dark, bizarre avant-folk and then suddenly this sweet little folk track. Seems to me like it was a studio placement to push it as a radio single and capitalize on the "cute hippy folk pop" craze. Her voice is not suited for that.
3. Mutterlein
just didn't think this song was that interesting.

Honestly if it was a longer record the score would probably go up. Or if they shortened it to get rid of those songs and just did it as an ep.

The Blues Project - Projections (1966)
>blues rock, psychedelic rock

Hard-hitting, heavy blues rock coupled with some of the earliest attempts at psychedelic rock. The blues rock is uncharacteristically great, it's charasmatic and raw while never coming close to becoming a pastiche of blues music. It also boasts some great instrumental work and an endearing vocal performance. The more psychedelic bits are much spottier. I appreciate the effort and I like how they break up the blues, which would certainly become monotonous if left alone for the album's entire runtime, but most of the time they seem unnecessary (yet still good) at best and somewhat irritating at worst (that fucking jazz flute). Take all that out, and you're still left with one of the best blues rock albums I've ever heard, and I guess the psychedelic, jazzy touches don't hurt /that/ much.

3.0-

Buell Kazee - Buell Kazee Sings and Plays (1958)
>old-time, appalachian folk music

A bit heavier on the interviews than I figured it would be, but frankly I prefer them to the actual music. Kazee's interviews focus a lot on where these songs came from, how they're performed, and what they specifically mean to him, and they're really interesting to listen to, especially when he goes over specific vocal techniques common in appalachian folk music. I don't care that much for the music itself, it's just standard banjo pickin' with some weirdly smooth vocals, but I especially don't care for the fact that the music comes in such brief intervals. He talks for a bit, plays a short segment of a song, and then goes back to talking. He's interesting to listen to, but he always interrupts his songs, I want to actually hear more of the songs he's talking about, the speaking gets pretty monotonous after 55 minutes. An interesting historical artifact, and an interesting interview, but for some good old-time/appalachian music, go somewhere else.

Kate Bush - The Dreaming (1982)

Just finished listened to this, marking my first full Kate Bush. I really enjoyed it, and was surprised at how strange and nearly frightening Kate can get. The range of instrumentation on here is really cool, and the musical styles vary enough to keep everything fresh. Kate toys with post-punk styled guitar riffs on some tracks and waltz-esque rhythms on others. Her vocals are also quite gorgeous, even in her more intense, strained sections. As for cons, I just didn't enjoy Sat In Your Lap or Houdini. They felt a little too scattered for my tastes, and just wanted them to end. Still, this is a very cool album with awesome high points. Definitely check out There Goes A Tenner and Get Out Of My House.

Some especially popular sororities at US universities, instead of voting on pledges, use an algorithm to select their pledge classes. These algorithms factor in numerical scores on predetermined categories, assigned by interviewers from 60-70 second interviews with each potential pledge. These algorithms were created out of necessity, because most sororities can field thousands of applicants every year. Voting on every pledge simply becomes infeasible. These algorithms are proprietary to their respective national boards—nobody in the chapters using the selection algorithm actually know the formula—for each sorority and select girls who would fit best with the sorority culture.

This helps to create not just a unified homogenous identity for the chapter, but a unified national image for the sorority.

Girls just wanna have fun

Because there are more fraternities nationwide than sororities, there are often relatively few sororities on each campus. Sororities are therefore easily rankable on each campus (even though rankings are officially banned by the panhelenic council) and extra funds are awarded to chapters that are highly-ranked on their respective campuses

while I like the lo-fi-ness of it, and all the incidental noise, and I think the lyrics are pretty great. I just think the songwriting itself is incredibly dull.
But what really sent me over the edge was her voice. I am really over that type of "indie" singing style that was popular a couple years back. It's just incredibly grating on my ears.
Same reason why I can't listen to Adult Jazz anymore, instrumentals are pretty interesting, but the voice kills me.

>Thinking Feller's Union Local 282 - Bob Dinners and Larry Noodles Present Tubby Turdner's Celebrity Avalance
Yeah this just did nothing for me. The lyrical stuff was just annoying and failed hard to be humorous in any way. There were a few mildly interesting instrumental parts, but overall the weirdness just came off as dull. The most interesting part of this album is it's outrageous title. 4/10

Kingpin Skinny Pimp - King of da Playaz Ball
This was awesome. The flow of skinny pimp really brought me into the album and all of interesting lyrical imagery kept me interested. The beats appeared to be simple on the surface, but after careful listening they actually had a lot of cool stuff going on. "Pimpin' and Hoin' is the best thing going" 7/10

King Tubby Meets Roots Radics - Dangerous Dub

It's a Roots Radics release, so you know the riddims are gonna be on point. And they certainly are good.
It's a King Tubby release so you know the engineering is gonna be on point. And it is.
The first 3 tracks are fucking the bomb though. Drops on drops on drops. Just masterful playfulness with the reverb and the echo, I couldn't help but grooving.
The middle bit of the record is still very good but the tracks take sort of a dip in excitement and a few become a little too repetitive and predictable for my taste. But then comes Earthquake Shake and the record picks up again and it's back to those tasty tasty dubby licks.
Mixing of the drums and bass is pretty excellent on this. Both are right front and center as they should, snare has a lot of snap to it.
At times the drums dominate a little too much, but holy fuck the drummer is so good that I can't blame them for putting him so high in the mix.
Only other gripe is that I wish more of the songs faded out rather than just came to an awkward stand still.
Other than that it's pretty much just another fantastic record from King Tubby. Not his most innovative, but goddamn solid and groovy all the way through.

Welp, lost a day there.

05/10 - Car Seat Headrest "Teens of Denial"
Listens: 2
Choice: Destroyed by Hippie Powers, Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales, Cosmic Hero (+)

This sure makes me feel 16 again. Teens of Denial combines just the right amount of angst and unmasked gut punch lyrics with a few surprisingly catchy hooks and a few drops more ambition than most indie rock popsters go for on their cuts.

If I could lodge one major complaint against this, it's that the running length is very long for an album without a great deal of sonic variance (wrt. tone and variety of instrument especially). However, despite that cut against the general ambition of the album's last half - `Cosmic Hero` totally floored me, it still stands up quite well. Solid stuff!

Mac Demarco - Another One

Not a complex or particular listen but it's really comfy. I enjoyed it much more than the other discs he released. His voice is really pleasant and fits well the guitar. Maybe I'll give it another spin sometimes.

6.5/10

Archy Marchall - A New Place 2 Drown

The atmosphere in this one is really appropriate, but everything felt really flat. The production is great and the loops are interesting but the album doesn't seem to go anywhere. 40 minuts are surely too long and it becomes boring at around half of it's duration. It was a worth listen nonetheless.

5.5/10

when I went to uni this morning I saw some bag on the streets with a lot of CDs in them. I was kinda late so I didn't really mind it or anything.
anyway around 3pm when I come back to the uni
I see some girl from my class having tons of cds on her table. I asked where did she get that from and she told me from the street and that I could pick whatever I wanted to take
ended up picking pic related +

Murmuure - s/t

An interesting piece of ambient black metal with cool synth work. at only 29 minutes, there isn't much room for the band to do a whole lot, but they use the time reasonably. This album has a myriad of cool samples and synths that segment sections of noise-coated black metal. Primo Vere and Amethyst are the tracks that do this best in my opinion. Torch Bearer is another favorite, sounding like something that could appear in Blade Runner, if Blade Runner was set amongst a noise music scene. However, a lot of the album comes off as the band's best Burzum impression, especially Reincarnate and Disincarnate. Also, L’adieu au Soleil does far too little to justify it's longer runtime.

Meshuggah - Nothing
>djent

I have a theory that the first Meshuggah album that you get into will always be the most enjoyment you get out of a Meshuggah record. My first was Catch-Thirtythree, and when I heard it I was like, “Damn this is pretty monotonous but the irregular repeating rhythms and huge guitar tone are really hypnotic, and I love the way the groove kinda sounds similar on each song, slowly mutating throughout the album.” Then I heard another record by them and I realized “Oh, thats how all of their albums are”.

So this is pretty par for the course. The riffs sacrifice all melodic creativity for rhythmic experimentation, which sounds impressive at first glance but becomes slightly less intriguing once you notice that a majority of the riffs on here are just heavily syncopated 4/4 (pay attention to the cymbals). The songs blend together in a pretty boring way, and the only real standout of the album for me was the closer, “Obsidian”, which functions more as a rhythmic drone piece than a metal song, repeating a glacial, stuttering groove over and over again for around six minutes.

Overall: Its Meshuggah at their least memorable. If you like them a lot, you’ll probably like this, but that’s like saying “If you like water, you’ll probably like this glass of water.”

apologies for the shorter review / not posting one yesterday. been travelling (reading week yay) and dealing with some personal shit

Macabre - Sinister Slaughter (1993)
>deathgrind, death metal, grindcore

It's really a higher-class version of Anal Cunt, if I'm being totally honest. A grindcore concept album about various serial killers sounds like a really obvious idea (and a really good idea, considering I love reading about serial killers), but this is just kinda lame and done with little subtlety. Not that I'd expect any subtlety from an album like this, but the comedy is far too on the nose and it plays up the shock factor way too much. The music itself is pretty alright, just standard grindcore stuff, nothing incredible but it gets the job done. When it switches up styles and gets more acoustic it's groan-worthy, but it doesn't happen terribly enough for it to be a big issue. A decent piece of camp if you're into either grind or serial killer lore, but pretty middling.

The New Christs - Distemper (1989)
>punk rock, garage punk

Down and dirty garage punk done pretty damn well. The energy on songs like "No Way on Earth" and "Coming Apart" is incredible, and the clean, thick production actually helps them a lot, they have a lot of power and urgency behind them. Suffers a bit in it's slower moments, becoming more sterile and less exhilirating, but they don't detract that much, despite being a bit out of place. Damn good punk, no more, no less.

Listened to two Haino releases, short write ups.

>Two Strings Will Do It
Came into this release for Haino, but stayed for Phillips and his wonderful solo bass performance at the start of Kôka. Otherwise, this is a pretty classic Haino free improvisation performance and there isn't much to say outside of that.

6/10

>Fantasy World
A Chisato Yamada solo shamisen performance that is supported by Mitsuo Ishida's flute on the first three tracks and Keiji Haino's guitar cuts (and percussion I assume) on the last two.

The record is peaceful and presents a lot of interesting acoustic percussion choices that work very well with Yamada's playing.

Tamao Koike - Automne Dans Un Miroir/鏡の中の十月

A lot of the time, synthpop is an upbeat or danceable genre. It can take less pleasant subjects, add some synthesizers to them and result in fun tunes like Don't You Want Me, Enola Gay or Tainted Love for examples. Other times, it can just really use fun subjects to make these pleasant and sometimes danceable tunes. However, there are times when synthpop is made with the intentions of merely being calm, relaxing and maybe even melancholy. This single serves as a well done example of more tranquil and slow sounding music from the genre.

Side A, 鏡の中の十月 is a fine work of techno kayo melancholy. Being produced by synthpop pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra, of course the synthesizer melodies are a big part of what makes this song such a lovely listen. The layered synth arrangements are gorgeous and give the track an ethereal sort of tone. The melodies they produce and their fairly calm tempo evoke feelings of a sentimental melancholy.

Koike then comes in to add to these already melancholy instrumentals. The girl's gentle and delicate singing soothes the ears. If only I could understand what she was singing and truly know if the song is as sad as its melodies imply.

Side B, Automne Dans Un Miroir is another version of the elegant tune. The differences here though are Koike's vocals and YMO's sumptuous instrumentation. Despite these differences, the song is just as charming, in it's own unique way.

One difference with the vocals is the fact that this version of the song is written in French. French, being the language of love, in a way adds a bit to the amorous feeling of the song. The other difference is that Koike's voice is softer than than her vocals on 鏡の中の十月. This provides the song with another kind of allure that seems almost seductive in its execution.

Meanwhile, YMO's arrangements are stripped down. The drums are removed and layers are cut out. However, this minimal production style is still pleasing to the ears. While the more complex instrumentation of the original version is worthy of praise, this version has its own magnetism that plays with the beauty of classic simplicity.

Overall, it's a very good single. It's peaceful, well produced and really just a lovely song. I could see this becoming a favorite of mine someday.

To sum things up:

Lol senpai this is so chill. 3.5/5.

Morning /daily/! Spent most of my Friday searching the local thrift stores for records. Here's my haul.

I haven't heard a few of these but I managed to snag some decent stuff for cheap. Anyone pick up anything good recently?

Good Dylan/Band record if the disc is in good shape though.

i wanted to write some short E-less reviews but i'm way too lazy to think right now
i need a rec from Kubera, Smurm, Terminus and Relgob for the second round
the restriction is the same but i won't be that strict this time (although i'd prefer absolutely no "E"s)

Dark Tranquility - The Gallery
>melodic death metal

I don’t know if I just wasn’t in the mood for something like this, but I’m feeling really meh on this. It sounds a LOT like the Jester Race, only it has a slightly more conventional death metal sound (as opposed to the alt-metal of In Flames) and a couple of (really out of place) female vocal features. Even though a few of the guitar melodies were kinda cool, there weren’t enough standout tracks to balance out the extremely monotonous sound that the album drifts into in the second half.

The only standout track was the winding “The Dividing Line” that actually has some dynamic song structure, riff variety, and a sense of progression from beginning to end.

Overall: If this is the “best that melodeath has to offer” I don’t think it’s the genre for me.

Blümchen - Herzfrequenz (1996)
>happy hardcore, bubblegum dance

My brain is complete mush, but I think I actually kinda dig it. It's an hour of essentially the same song—that's undeniable, but it's honestly a /really/ good song. The production is thick and maximalist; the melodies are pretty gorgeous; Blümchen's vocals are ethereal; and, more often than not, it totally bangs in a way only '90s rave music can bang. Then it just repeats over and over again for 60 minutes. I don't even know how I feel about this, I enjoyed myself listening to it, but I got /so/ sick of it by the end, especially with the out-of-place, hokey Queen remix. If it was shorter it'd be damn good, but as is it's overlong. Still pretty good, just way too long.

Venom P. Stinger - Meet My Friend Venom (1986)
>noise rock, post-punk, garage punk

Exhilirating, bluesy, noisy punk. There's nothing here that you couldn't find on another album with a similar style, but it's done really well. Even though it's a lo-fi punk album, the instrumental work is great, mainly the guitar work, courtesy of a pre-Dirty Three Mick Turner. However, it's too reliant on this one style, suffering a decent bit whenever the tempo is slowed down and the volume is lowered, and you could certainly make a case for the album being a Birthday Party rip-off (snarling vocals and all!), but I honestly like it a fair bit more than them, so it's a moot point. Really good stuff, overall.

Pretty much all entry level arthouse is on rutracker, which has no ratio requirements or anything.

If you want anything that's really hard to find (e.g. old Dada bullshit), it's only on Karagarga, which is currently not open to new members via invite or otherwise. It's also virtually impossible to stay on Karagarga if you don't own an expensive seedbox.

Just make sure to download the larger files on rutracker if it's a non-Russian movie. The smaller ones are probably Russian dubs with no alternate audio. Make sure to get things with the Orig. [Language] because that means you get the original audio in the audio selector in your media player.
