We were discussing Ayler in the discord earlier and I strongly believe he was never given the opportunity to peak due to his suicide but how do you feel?
>>
>>68341953
Try leaving the womb some time.
>>
>>68341988
I agree. I'm a huge fan of Ayler's uniquely individual approach to jazz, but I don't think any of his albums are worthy of heavy praise.
His compositions are usually weak, which is why he recorded many takes of his best songs.
Had less pressure by Impulse on accessibility been applied, he could have taken his creative direction forward in the mid 60's rather than backwards.

That Bill Evans record is the best piano jazz trio ever recorded.

Skeleton Tree is great but it has a very limited scope; the instrumentation and lyrics are very good, but the dull repetitive delivery leaves a little to be desired.
Think a sparser, darker and moodier Push The Sky Away.
Definitely worth a listen. Rings of Saturn is probably my favourite song this year so far.

Ah.

The other Evans album is more of a platform for Steig's flute playing than a focused piece. The tracks are all covers and re-workings, so there's nothing particularly stunning or original.
The musicianship is great, though, and Steig's flue playing melds nice with Evan to create a calming atmosphere.
It's pretty good but I wouldn't really recommend it unless you dream about Bill Evans every night.

>atrocity exhibition
fucking great, this album is dark as hell and all over the place but it somehow still has an air of cohesion. not every track does it for me, but the better tracks (standouts: Downward Spiral, Tell Me What I Don't Know, Really Doe, Get Hi) are fucking insane. shoutout to Earl for fucking killing it on Really Doe.
>city of caterpillar
post-rocky screamo. neat balance between melodic and chaotic intense parts, but i feel the muddled production takes away from the punch it could've packed.
>poems from a rooftop
easy-going downtempo with acoustic instrumentation, very chilled out but it occasionally borders on elevator music. the more electronic sounding parts remind me of Jan Jelinek a bit. not very special, but it's great to study to.
>the moon is a dead world
prog skramz. really needs more listens as i feel it went over my head for a bit.
>sirens
retro pop filtered through Jaar's futuristic, somewhat off-kilter production. occasionally drags, but i love the idea of rockabilly synthpop.

>Heavy Heavy Low Low
>mathcore, hardcore punk

This is the sonic equivalent of chugging a warm energy drink. Fast, lofi riffs played over some super punky drums that are way too catchy for how irregular and quick changing they are. The vocals are really blown out and intentionally grating too, which matches the EP's DIY hardcore flavour.

I really loved "Customary Impurity" which fits an insane amount (I counted six) of different punk riffs into 1.5 minutes, each of which could probably be their own song if you build a little more around them. The band moved between all of these different ideas flawlessly, and performs each of them with a lot of synchronicity despite feeling really unbounded and raw.

Hospital Bomber was Heavy Heavy Low Low's final contribution to the musical world that left me 100% certain they had the ability to keep getting better. They went from creating slightly above average math/grindcore to alienating their fanbase with their jazz/surf/funk inspired metal album Turtle Nipple and the Toxic Shock. Hospital Bomber may have only been 4 tracks within 5 minutes but they further purified their unique sound to make it without a single flaw.

So, I still wish we had a full album of this material but that's just where the story ends and if you manage to enjoy it then that makes me happy.

VHS Head - Trademark Ribbons of Gold (2010)
>IDM

Shockingly good, I came into this expecting little and I got one of the best electronic albums of the decade. The most obvious and immediately memorable thing about this album is its use of samples. It's almost proto-vaporwave in how it chops, screws, or in some way plays with '80s/'90s pop music samples, but it injects the samples with an Aphex Twin-esque energy, while still never forgetting to make the music be danceable as hell. The various sound effects also add quite a bit, with what I think is the pistol sound from GoldenEye appearing on nearly every track. It's far too long, however, with the album running over an hour. Overlong ambient tracks that use these aforementioned sound effects as the base of whole tracks rather than to compliment already great tracks seem to exist just to pad the album's length, and add absolutely nothing interesting by themselves. This can't take away from the bulk of the album /that/ much, so shorten the album by 20 minutes or so and you're left with one of the most inventive and flat-out fun electronic releases in recent memory, keep the length and it sometimes becomes an overly lengthy slog. Luckily, the former mostly wins out.

I've been to a few metal shows, you don't have to worry about anything. Gojira is popular so it'll probably be a big venue with ample security. Just look out for where mosh pits form if you don't want to participate. Stage divers, too.
Metal crowds can look scary, but they're very friendly in my experience. If someone falls in a mosh pit, they are helped up. Everyone is there because they want to have fun. Which you should do, too! Enjoy it anon

Changed a few things on my chart because of reasons.

>Savages - Adore Life
They expand on their sound displayed on their debut Silence Yourself, which means the great punchy basslines are still there, but they're a little bit reduced in favor for more atmospheric songs. Jehnny Beth's voice compliments the moody guitar playing well. I just wished they experimented a bit more and added more interesting elements than standard post punk revival, but they are still good at what they're doing. 6/10

My MacBook is acting very weird right now, it just shuts down randomly as if I'd pressed the power button. I just formatted the drive too.

Probably something hardware related, it seems to happen when I put some pressure on the man body. Also covering the IR receiver and turning off remote controls seemed to help a bit (very, very weird). It's almost as if someone stood in my room beaming the computer with a remote. Fucking ghosts man, I'm telling you.

So it happened again. I flipped it over and pushed a bit on the back, and it felt sort of squishy. Odd. Decided to open it up, maybe the back plate is touching the main board and shorting it or something? I could just put some insulation there.

Here and Now - Give and Take (1978)
>progressive rock, space rock

Decent prog, sorta like Gong filtered through '70s punk, with some flouncy Jethro Tull-esque woodwinds thrown in. Punk is done a whole load better than prog here, when the band taps into an energetic, heavy punk sound like on the opener "What You See Is What You Get" (at least after a terrible introduction), it's really cool, the vocals are delivered wonderfully and insistently, the drumming is great, and the riffs are catchy while still retaining a certain heaviness to them. When they start to experiment more with their prog sound, however, the album starts to become an exercise in just how unbearably ostentatious a prog album can get. They obviously take a lot of influence from the British prog bands of the late '60s and early '70s, but do so without taking any of the songwriting talent, and only some of the instrumental skills. They're wanking without the ability to really wank, to use a really shitty metaphor. There's some nice electronic soundscaping in the back of a lot of tracks, and the 11-minute "Improvisation" has some badass guitar work, but outside of the more straight-up spacey punk bits this is merely a footnote in the canon of prog. Still worth a listen.

Lard Free - Gilbert Artman's Lard Free (1973)
>avant-prog

Lard Free experiments with so many styles here: jazz, krautrock, progressive electronics, but never melds any of these styles together, each style only gets its time to shine on indvidual tracks, making the album as a whole a disjointed mess. The only sense of consistency here lies in Artman's steady, lively drumming, which lies down the base for all these different genre experiments. "12 ou 13 juillet que je sais d'elle" is probably the album's best track, every single style here is put into one supremely fucked up, off-the-wall song, with frenetic electronic bleeps eventually leading into a disjointed, dirgy free jazz track. The rest ranges from pretty decent to downright forgettable, "Acide framboise" lays down a good groove that serves as the base for some interesting guitar solos, but following that is "Livarot respiration", a standard, bland jazz tracks. It's a really frustrating album, never truly reaching it's full potential, but it's interesting, and when it occasionally focuses and puts together all of it's separate elements, it's pretty brilliant.

Vomir & Yoshihiro Kikuchi - Collaboration (2015)
>harsh noise wall

It really does take a lot for harsh noise wall to be interesting, and this doesn't hit the mark. It's not a pure blast of noise, like The Rita, but it's repetitive, lazy, and awful in it's own right. A three second segment starts off each track, and then that three second segment is repeated ad nauseum, with no variation whatsoever. The slight black metal influence with the guitars is a decent touch, and I guess it gets pretty hypnotic at times, but this is just /lazy/ music. It does nothing interesting besides blowing out speakers, something good music can definitely do too.

Last African artists from Blacktober:

>Coulibaly Tidiani et l'authentique Dafra Star de Bobo Dioulasso • s/t (1976)
2.0
Mande music from Burkina Faso: not fan of the singing part (quickly annoying), but the music itself (orchestral brass parts, and plucked strings?) is pretty. The A-side is a 20-minutes interesting long track sung in French about the recent independence.

>Ama Maïga • Une Flèche Malienne (1984)
3.5
Highly melodic Malian music mixing afropop & more traditional things, with diverse influences: reggae on #1, afrofunk on #2 & #3 (but still quite different from the usual afrofunk/afrobeat from Nigeria). The 4th track is a slow (dated) ballad with sad arpeggios. Ama Maïga voice shines with the help of a tight funky band (session men met at Paris during the recording) using guitars, kora & brass instruments.

>Ballaké Sissoko • At Peace (2013)
4.5
More amazing kora arpeggios, similar to Toumani Diabaté (they have released 'New ancient strings' together in 1999).

Lonnie Holley - Just Before Music (2012)
>psychedelic soul

The comparisons to Arthur Russell's World of Echo are definitely just, with Holley's ultra-minimalistic, spacey sound coming shockingly close to encapsulating the singular sound of Russell's opus. Holley's vocals also come close to mimicking Russell's mumbly, sophisticated style of singing, especially on the track "Here I Stand Knocking at Your Door", albeit with a lot more of a soulful inflection. Mostly, Holley's work is pretty great, he sings with a lot of passion and the instrumentals compliment the vocals perfectly, in their own cheap little manner. The major issue is that this style does not lend itself well to /ultra/ long tracks. The two 13-minute long tracks are cutting it close, the 25-minute track is just absolute overkill. The basic sound itself is still great, but the songs themselves wear incredibly thin around the 10-minute mark. Some editing could make this a modern classic, but as it stands it's far too bloated.

3.0-

heRajiKa Tracks - Love Universal (2011)
>instrumental hip hop

Your standard Soundcloud/Bandcamp beat tape, pleasant enough but absolutely nothing to write home about. Most instrumental hip hop I like works well on it's own as well as sounding perfect with vocals on top of it, this seems like it would only really work with a rapper over it, the beats are just bland and boring by themselves. It's got something of an early Kanye-esque sense of pure joy and hopefulness to it, with a lot of cut-up soul and gospel samples, but they're executed poorly and the whole tape just sounds cheap. It's enjoyable enough, and the beats would certainly be decent if rapped over, but as a standalone album it's bland and tedious.

Ritual is a pretty frustrating. Fire! Orchestra had hit a stride of brilliance on the track "Exit Part One", but they can't seem to emulate the pure genius that was put into it in later works. For fans of Swedish Jazz, "The National Anthem" by Radiohead, and Joanna Newsom.

The next release was a single by the band "The Hated". I hated it. For fans of limp-dicked emos whining over an uninteresting guitar performance.

Telstar Ponies - In the Space of a Few Minutes (1995)
>indie rock

Spacey indie rock, and in the theme of recent discussions here, pretty similar to Built to Spill. It's got a noisy edge to it that I like a lot, soft, instrumental passages are often interrupted with bursts of overdriven guitars, creating a really nice sense of dynamics. The /much/ softer tracks like "Moon, Don't Come Up Tonight" and "I Still Believe in Christmas Trees" are a bit overbearingly twee, and a song like "Not Even Starcrossed" shows off the album's frankly awful vocals, hurting the track as a whole, but they balance these negative aspects with fucking /awesome/ aspects wonderfully. The drum beat on "Lugengeschichte" proves that motorik can make anything amazing (really, it's the best damn drum beat ever), and "Her Name" is wonderfully cathartic. Pretty damn good album, not sure how it's so under the radar.

3.0+

BusRatch - Memorium (2002)
>turntable music

Two dudes fucking around with a turntable for 45 minutes. It's occasionally cool, and always really ominous and creepy, but sometimes it's a bit irritating. The album is at it's best when various sound effects are mashed together to create an overbearing, powerful, oppressive wall of noise, but it suffers a lot when these same sound effects are focused upon individually. They lose all weight and power when taken on their own, just becoming irritating and kinda lazy, for lack of a better word. A perfect scary listen for this season, but it has it's fair share of flaws.

the drums are pure drum and bass/jungle, so here are some releases in that style I like:

DJ Jeffee-Jungle Spliff
Gachet-Elite Sounds
Jacob's Optical Stairway-Jacob's Optical Stairway
Remarc-Sound Murderer
T Power-The Self Evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind
Various Artists-Rumble in the Jungle

they're all mostly jungle, so they're more aggressive, but that drum style is still there.

that track is also totally nu jazz with the horns mixed with the drums. I don't know anything about nu jazz, but Amon Tobin and Herbert are big artists in that style. Herbert especially sounds a lot like that song.

Gotta love it when your internet goes out for two days. I have three really brief write ups of the albums I had for the days I was off the grid.

toe - Hear You

I found this to be an underwhelming version of what this already did in their older albums. There are still some beautiful moments and really cool riffs, but I found the majority of this thing to super dull. They seem to be going for a "chill" sound that just ends up being boring.

4.5/10

Uchu Conbini - 月の反射でみてた

This band's first album is one of my favorite emo albums, and one of my absolute favorites to come out of Japan. I listened to this back when it was released and was really underwhelmed, but a revisit really helped me enjoy it more. The band toys with more instrumental content on here, and it definitely works. The vocals are still fucking beautiful, and track 4 is probably one of my favorites from the band now. Check this band's whole discog out if you're into classic midwest-style emo.

7.5/10

Acid Mother's Temple - La Novia

I'm going to guess that most of the posters in here have heard this thing. I've listened to it in the background a few times, but this is my first time really sitting down and focusing on the music. There is some incredible stuff on here. The 40 minute title track is absolutely incredible. It's one of the most intoxicating pieces of musical psychedelia I have experienced. The rest of the album is very cool as well, but pales in comparison to the centerpiece. The final track is still an awesome crescendo focused piece. If this album was only the title track, it would maybe be a 10/10.

8.5/10

VA - Cold Waves and Minimal Electronics Vol. 1
>Minimal Synth, Coldwave, Synthpop
A very well constructed compilation of many lesser known minimal wave artists from across Europe. This is one of those records where I went in not knowing a single artist that was billed and left wanting to hear more of each and every one (for the most part).
What is presented on this album is an assortment of shoulda-been hit club singles for all those depressed and cynical 80's goths.
If you've heard The Units, or New Order, or Solid Space, you should have a good idea of what this music sounds like; minimal repetitive synth lines, snappy drum machines, and gloomy vocals. A lot of the songs on this album do follow the same pattern and sound pretty similar to each other.
However, this is the cream of the crop when it comes to minimal wave. Almost every song is fucking catchy, groovy, and just makes you want to snort some coke and go dance.
Y'know, 80's stuff.
A few songs here or there lack that essential beat to get you goin', but those are few and far between.

John Fahey & Cul De Sac - The Epiphany of Glenn Jones
>Avant Folk, Drone, Spoken Word, Musique Concrete, American Primitivism
Like most late period Fahey, it has its goods and its bads. I will say that this record has probably the most fully realized sound of all his later experiments. But it still manages to falter at a few crucial points.
The record starts out with a spectacular 3 song run of excellent material. Shifting from Avant-folk to Sound Collages to psychedelic improv, it's surprising this constant indecisiveness works so well in each case. The "Gamelan" collage pieces work incredibly, harking back to Fahey's experiments in the 60s on albums like Days Have Gone By. All in all the drone and electronic pieces mesh together very well with Fahey's unconventional guitar melodies. I even enjoyed the slightly humourous spoken word piece "More Nothing" (however I thought "Nothing" overstayed its welcome and was not nearly as charming).
The biggest place this album fails though, other than the closer, is in the short blues interludes. "Short" being relative to the other song lengths.
They felt completely out of place in this weird, dark, avant-garde atmosphere that the rest of the record does a pretty good job maintaining.
They aren't even particularly good blues pieces, they are completely marred by Cul De Sac needlessly trying to force in drumming or bass accompaniment that just doesn't blend well.

Cal Tjader - Soul Sauce
>Latin Jazz, Mambo, Boogaloo
This record starts out very promising with the fiery titular track, sneaking in some very obvious mambo and boogaloo influence on the first few tracks. Once it gets into the meat of the album and sheds its afro-cuban skin, my interest wanes a little as it becomes sort of just another Cal Tjader record.
That's not to say it's bad or disappointing in the least. Tjader is of course killing it on the vibes, somehow managing to turn the cool instrument into one of intense passion on the mambo tracks.
And they sure do play the room well. The reverb on this record is so fucking good, the congas are just bouncing off the walls.

Dirty Beaches - Drifters // Love is the Devil
This was occasionally excellent, this dude has this really meaty synth-punk thing going on, everything sounds kinda like it's underwater... so it works when it wants to, unfortunately there is far too much blubber on these songs to warrant anything above a 6, am interested to see whether or not the guy can tighten up the screws in the future...

Pelt - Brown Cyclopaedia
Really great, less immediately drugs than Ayahuasca, more of the kind of downbeat post-hardcore you'd hear out of US Maple, but it pulls it off really well gotta be honest with you, can't wait to pull this out on a tourney because it has great rigging potential

Fugazi - In On the Killtaker
pretty legit, not gonna lie... pretty relentless throughout although Facet Squared, Sweet and Low and Great Cop were definate highlights
It's really well sequenced as well, like it's something I would listen to all the way through multiple times without skipping kinda like the uh... Blink 183 Greatest Hits album
It's fucking Fugazi, you know that it's good

Sightings - Arrived in Gold
Kinda bullshit, I know what they're tryna do, but it's less Sonic Youth and more formless, tasteless mush

definitely nothing revolutionary, quite similar approach to the Uno Dos Tre series, particularly Tre, which was my favourite of the three
they aren't going for the opera-dramatic style, but instead try to go back to their roots and fortunately not succeeding, continuing a streak
not all songs deliver tho, I miss highpoints and catchy tunes, but these will probably come with repeated listen, the ballady elements are weaker here than usual, opener and closer are especially disappointing
there's alot of energy in this, so I hope they make an accompanying live album for it, I'm sure that would top the studio one

I agree with you on the fact that it is frustrating, but I'd say they are instead trying too hard to emulate what made their past albums so great. The vocals are more exaggerated, the noisy moments are noisier... and in the end it all feels kind of bland.

Started with orkblut cus it's short. Six of eleven tracks here are pretty brief and rarely exceed the minute mark. Those are mostly acoustic and serve as interludes for the rest of the songs. They're pretty, but I don't like how the album switches between them and black metal, and I'd rather have only one of those styles because the record is already pretty short to be fragmented in two.

I feel bad giving out three high ratings in such a short time, but there is so much high RYM rating content on here.

Keiji Haino - Koko

What a fantastically simple piece of music. I'm a massive fan of Keiji, much like many others here, but I somehow managed to miss that this album existed. I'm actually pissed I didn't listen to this to begin my Haino journey, as it is a fantastic introduction to his range of work. It's probably the most accessible Keiji piece I've heard, bearing many pleasant similarities to the work of many ethereal post-rock bands. Keiji's vocals really shine in the second half, and the noisy end segment was a perfect finishing touch after 20 minutes of being soaked in lush guitar.
