trying to emulate some kind of cheesy snes sound. joe and mac. I hate programming drums and I think that's noticeable. just wondering if you hear something that you like or something that you don't like

>>68364625
I enjoy this kind of experimentation with textures and stuff but there are some places it could be more 'punchy'. the contrast between the flute and the following part at 0:19 should be more effective. boost some frequencies and maybe add some slight reverb to it?
the part at 0:46 is good in a very different way. really lovely bass. obviously you could do some cool brass stuff with that
>>
didn't get an answer last thread so:

/prod/ can you guys help me find a synth that i could also use as a midi controller?

i was looking for some korg ms2000s but can't find any. any other suggestions? microbrute? budget is pretty low, around $400ish

great point. Practically nothing is compressed now that I'm glancing at the project. Thanks for the help

>>68365351
>just wondering if you hear something that you like or something that you don't like
I'm biased because I don't avidly listen to this stuff on a regular basis but I've known my fair share of game music. I think it's good man. I think the biggest thing this needs is dynamics. Even the old snes leads vary in velocity slightly. I think you should go in and tweak the notes before worrying about the drums, because it will also help them come through the mix more. Then maybe worry about that hihat, other than that the drums are fine.

>>68365382
>budget is pretty low, around $400ish
bullshit man. Sky's the limit with craigslist and other stuff nowadays. with 400 bucks you could buy a vintage pearl kit ffs you just have to be smart about it. I know little about the hardware game but honestly anon just start looking around.

this phenomenon is 100% mental. You have a boring life you just need motivation and inspiration. I am not your fucking life coach so I'm not going to provide those means for you, but tbqhfam if you cannot get motivated to make music, you were probably never meant to be a musician

1st track:
>organ is cheesy sounding
>snare has too much high end, making it sound too bright
>the triangle sounds wack, I'd remove it entirely
Other than that, it progresses nicely and the strings at 0:50 sound really dope.

2nd track:
>hi hats sound like they're not in tune

>>68365961
Sounds really great. Don't listen to the other anon saying it's boring. Atmospheric music can progress slowly.
Only problem is how heavily the elements are panned. Try widening and centering some of the sounds with a delay on the left and right channels. It sounds less empty that way.

Where'd you get the sound that comes in at the left side at 2:45? Did you make it in a synth or use a soundbank like Omnisphere?

>>68365351
Try changing the snare/tambourine out for something else. Change the bassline so it's not quite as repetitive too.
I love the lead and background synth.

There is a /comp/ thread if you want some theory, otherwise its just ear which is trainable.

>>
>>68369893
You just have to trust yourself if something sounds good, and doesn't sound out then it's not particularly wrong to use something out of key. It's when different keys don't work together and the off tune stuff sounds out that you then need to go "okay that was shit" what note does sound good with that one. Having some music theory at /comp/ and taking some music theory classes will help big time.

>>68370601
Hai. Umm it's pretty sweet to have a rest! Okay, so I really liked it by the way. Just so you know the percussion whee it gets a little bit heavier at 1:57 and you redo it closer to the end, I didn't really like the rhythm of it, but it works. Try to stuff around with a couple other beats there, but for sure I can't believe your progress since I first heard you.

/prod/ - whats the advantage of having an interface? do you need one ?
>>
>>68378350
having monitor speakers pretty much requires it.
having any input device that isnt midi does, too.
so yes, you need one.
>>
>>68378406
Okay, so if I'm looking at seriously continuing with my production what kind of interface should I be looking at? Does it need to be as fancy as the apogees or can it be something a bit cheaper?

>>
>>68378742
Zero problems, even got it second hand.

Sometimes reviews are shit because users are retarded.
>>
>>68378761
I'll definitely look into one at that price then.

Sorry if this seems like a really stupid question but what particularly do you have to plug into it? Like I produce with a push 2, launchkey, and apc40 - and want to get a decent set of monitors. what goes straight into mac or interface? sorry for being an autist...
>>
https://clyp.it/0wpmoa1f

I have invented a new genre senpaitachi.
>>
>>68378800
Out of these things you only need to plug the monitors in, the EIE has USB ports too so you could plug your controllers in it too to save your normal ports.

Mics, guitars, hardware synths are all the other things you can plug in.
>>
>>68378820
I follow now, thanks man.

Do you think I need to add anything to my set up? I don't have a modular synth or anything like that, are they really needed at all if your happy with the sound your getting out of what you have.
>>
>>68377464
Is the melody too simplistic or what?
>>
>>68378687
EIEI pro is slightly better version, I was going to buy that one but mc Donald told me to get a focusrite 18i20 so I got that instead.
>>
>>68378837
I'd say that if you don't own any instruments then you don't need an audio interface at all. I did without one for nearly 10 years. Headphones out on computer to headphones or input on amp for monitors.
If you are producing entirely in software then why would you want audio ins and outs?
Top tip always buy an interface with more inputs and outputs than you need. The 8 in I thought would be enough were soon filled when I bought a sampler with 10 outputs
>>
>>68379099
Okay cool thanks! As I said I'm really slow to this, and didn't know why producers I follow use one...I'm guessing simply for their monitors? I know very little about equipment in general, and it's all a learning curve I guess. If I can continue going on without one, then that's how I'll happily stay lol.
>>
>>68379153
An audio interface is purely for getting audio in and out of your computer. For example if I want to record or process my old 80's hardware synth inside my daw I need a way of getting that audio inside my computer so a audio interface is a good way of achieving this. It's also handy if you want to get the sound of a soft synth like massive for instance out of your computer and add external effects (say a nice reverb) from an external hardware effects unit, then send it back into your computer to record.
Unless you have multiple instrument or hardware though you can do all of this individually by using the mic/line input and headphones/output on your computer. Most audio interfaces would have better quality ins and outs than the cheap ones installed on a computer though.
Hope this helps anon
>>
>>68379257

Your kick drum is clipping/distorting. I feel like it's too loud as well.
Consider running it through a compressor. Also look up sidechaining, which is what I think you are trying to achieve by having the kick so loud.

>>68381790
side chain your kick to the synth compressor, nice work needs more percussion though

>>68376617
sounds like it could be on an earl track, very nice super lucid, possible a little more clarity with the synths by side chaining the kick to synth compressor but otherwise v good

>>68378805
no you haven't, your guitars are way too loud, there is no clarity in your percussion. Is interesting though keep it up

>>68377768
love your melodies very chill, comfy

>>68377464
love it, your synth is just a tad high but otherwise very solid

>>68376506
your sequencer is gorgeous, the only thing lacking is your percussion which is quite bare. I'd suggest look for more space in the mix, hit some notes in realtime and keep it syncopated. Good stuff though

>>68375223
have no complaints with this track, like a mix between dilla and avalanches - don't stop

>>68372830
your melody is lacking any resolution, beat does scare the shit out of me though

>>68371803
you just need to bridge these elements and it's a very solid track, good stuff

whatever reverb plate/delay algorithm you're using sounds like shite and it's not the settings of the plugin it's the quality itself. Find a higher quality reverb and drop your jaw at how instantly it can make your track sound more professional.

Second, I'm all for sidechain and all that but in this there's too much. Every time that bass kick hits it ass-rapes every other element. My main complaints are just about the mix for this one anon

Does anyone use the binaural panner in Logic? Thinking of switching to Logic from my current daw because it lacks in certain areas
>>
>>68385537
chances are there are ways to do whatever you are trying to achieve in any daw (maybe not garageband).

just find a work around, it's not worth spending months of productivity loss just to learn a new daw for one ease-of-use feature.
>>
>>68385537
There are VSTs for that
>>
>>68385667
Normally I would agree with you and for the most part I do, but I've been using Ableton Live for years and while I really love how fast it is at getting ideas out and how inspirational it is for creativity, I do feel limited in certain areas, mainly mixing. Mixing isn't my strong suit but if I can get a little bit closer to a good mix with the tools Logic offers, it would be worth the transition imo

>>68385956
It goes back to my first question >>68385537

If they think binaural panning is worthwhile I could see myself making the switch. Learning daws really doesn't take that long if you know the basic principles of mixing.
>>
>>68386035
>Learning daws really doesn't take that long

it is by far the easiest productivity killer. you are literally stepping backwards hundreds of hours. If you've been using ableton for a couple years, it will probably take equally as long for you to feel as comfortable in a new daw. All of those little tricks/shortcuts/methods you've learned in ableton will have to be relearned in logic.

All daws worth the same and follow standard principles, but you still have to learn how it functions all over again, and remember where everything is located. That takes a much longer time than say, working around how ableton (and most other daws) pan.

I see where you're coming from but I fundamentally disagree with you. I've been using Live for over 10 years and I'm as good as I'm going to get at it. I'm still going to use it for creative things but if another DAW does something better/easier I see no reason not to at least TRY it. I get the vibe that people are really gung ho about the daws they use on this board for some reason and while I respect that, as an ethos I disagree with it. I only care about the end result, no matter how I get there.

Thanks for the feedback!

This level of production is what I aspire to, however it seems at times that the beat is out of time/speeding up which may be because of the reversing of the samples?

I'm not sure, but overall very impressive arrangement
>>
>>68386416
yeah, go for it then anon! sometimes a new user interface can be better in the long run!

I don't have much experience using multiple daws in the same workflow. Though i have thrown a few years each at 3-4 different DAWs, and for me, i created the least amount of music during those transitional times.

you need to get more confident in singing, it sounds like you're holding back (maybe you're afraid of neighbors/family hearing you, that's how it is for me)
try to intentionally overpronounce words while you're singing as a practice so your voice sounds clearer and stronger, also use your diaphragm more than your lungs for singing
your pitch is fine for the most part, your voice just sounds a bit shaky because you're still insecure I guess, you can overcome that

Eventually you'll want to be able to create a very specific type of sound that it would be impractical or impossible to create with Live's stock synths or any VST. At that point, when you've exhausted all your software options, is when you can look into buying hardware synths/instruments/whatever
>>
>>68393904
>>
>>68393946
but like...what sounds can't be achieved with stock synths or a vst?
>>
>>68393620
Some people prefer the immediacy of hardware... You can just turn a knob on a synth and get a different sound. You won't have to worry about menu-diving or MIDI mapping and shit like that. It's mostly a matter of workflow preference. Some people will also sing the praises of 'analog warmth' from hardware but that's up to you if it's worth it, 99% of average listeners can't tell the difference.

Honestly if you're looking for someone to explain it to you it's clear you haven't played with one yet. Go to Guitar Center tomorrow and dick around with one and fuck with the filters/envelopes. This really isn't true.
For a start the emulations are getting better but still don't properly mimic the behaviour of the circuitry in these synths.
Then there's the fact that you have close to infinite resolution on filters etc. rather than the 128 steps that MIDI provides.
Also don't underestimate the look/smell/feel/layout of hardware, it makes your brain work in different ways and forces your approach to change (usually in a way that's more fun and 'creative' feeling than clicking around a DAW).
Also there's no access to 4chan on a hardware synth which means you'll make music instead of wasting time online.

I'm not that great with production, and there's this weird thing I don't understand, maybe someone who knows more will be able to explain.

When I'm doing a rough mix sometimes I'll put a limiter on the master track just to get a sort of preview of what the master might sound like. I'm assuming that might be bad practice, but that aside, it ends up causing these really weird fluctuations in volume when I play it through cheap speakers, like noticeable dips in volume to where it sounds like the volume is randomly being turned up and down rapidly. Through my monitors it sounds fine and normal though like nothing unusual.

Does anyone know why this effect happens on cheaper speakers? Again, not really an issue in the long run since it's just a rough mix, but just curious as to why that happens.
>>
>>68400205
Make most of it quickly, leave it for a bit, come back and finish it off.

Or just accept that you're sick of it but plough through and finish up, then don't listen for a month and come back to it with fresh ears.
>>
>>68400302
That's just the limiter doing it's job (lowering the volume by the amount that the signal was crossing it's threshold).

It means you've got loud peaks in your tracks that are forcing the limiter to lower the volume of everything when the peaks hit.

It's known as pumping or sucking in the biz and is generally undesirable but can occasionally be put to good use

>>
>>68400409

basically, what I'm looking for is a pitch control with keyboard tracking if that makes any sense.

I've played with synths and have owned (nothing super crazy expensive) my own synths before, as well as drum machines. The most fun I've had playing on one thus far was the mini juno roland just made.

But the best synth sounds I've heard yet have been made in MAX, atleast to my ears. I was just asking the question because I was watching an arturia mini-brute performance video and it got me wondering why not just use a drum rack?

Overall what facilitates the most comfy work flow is important, but I'm coming from a period in my life where I've sold all my equipment to afford school.

I have anon. Heard back from maybe 3 bigger indie labels but ultimately didn't get picked up. This was back in 2012 though and I'm wrapping up my next demo to shop around. Fingers crossed

What are the best free vsts to make k-pop like music and trap?

software is good, and it has gotten really good recently. But software still falls flat when trying to emulate the natural subtleties of analog oscillators and filters. I know that doesn't seem like much, but it's those elements that make analog synths "scream" and sound "organic" or "rich"

Good example of these subtleties are heard when comparing an original 303 to the software equivalents. the 303 doesnt have much additional modulation, so the sound relies on those subtleties of the oscillator and filter... with the software emulation, you have to add a bunch of additional processing to make it sound as "alive."

when that resonance knob is up, it's like a totally different beast.

How do I synthesize a kick like this one?

I mean, it's a sinewave, right?
I just can't get it to sound like that
>>
>>68403468
Just a sine wave with a very sharp pitch envelope should do. And maybe a click at the beginning. You could also try a self-oscillating filter instead of a sine osc.
>>
>>68403468
why do you want to synthesize it if you already have the sample?
>>
>>68403529
i don't know if I'm just not getting the envelope shape right but it never sounds that full and bouncy
>>68403547
1) learning purposes
2) more control over the sound
3) being able to freely adjust pitch
>>
>>68403598
shut up virgin nerd just sample it
>>
>>68403782
what do you do when the sample you want to use doesn't fit in the mix?
>>
>>68403925
ummm....maybe....just maybe...there's a slight possiblity.....one in a million chance.......that........if........u.........mix...........it.......better....it......will........fit........in........the.......mix
