Does anybody listen to this music anymore? I always make something and then think if it is even worth pouring my time into. Guess I will always say that until I start making dank EDM beats.

godspeed anon, you're doing god's work

but it does seem much worse in here, maybe it's just today, not been here for a while
>>
hi /mu/ i dont study music, nor do i know anything about music theory.

But recently, watching documentaries on j dilla has made me want to try to make beats.

Before investing in any equipment should I download protools and see if i have any talent?
>>
>>68274597
I suggest you to start with FL Studio or Ableton because they are used the most today and have a lot of tutorials, Pro Tools is more "old school". Also, ofc, pirate the DAW (or you can use trials) and see if you like it.

What I forgot to add to the OP is that for Ableton, check out SadowickProduction tutorials and for FL Studio check out SeamlessR (his link is added).

i have nice monitors but at night i have use headphones

rn i have the audio technica m50s and i am pretty sick of them. i find they are pretty harsh and just don't sound very pretty. i get ear fatigue within an hour and they are super uncomfortable. Using my monitors, i can work on music all day but with my m50s i find that i just get fed up with a headache after 45 minutes of messing around with sounds.

Looking for a nice opened back headphone, within $200-300 range
>>
>>68274639
Between ableton and fruityloops, which has more pirateable content?
I know fruityloops has like 500 dollar snare kits and shit to save you having to sample yourself.
>>
>>68274597
Pretty sure Dillard's used a MPC to make his beats not pro tools anon
>>
>>68274597
its really just learning how to use software. you won't open pro tools and suddenly be making magic, and buying an mpd won't make anything easier to be honest. all you need is a computer and the software.

I have Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 250 OHM and it is great, although I'm not really familiar with other brands.

mp, electribe, microkorg, protools, macbook, numark pt-01,
a technics 1200, dj mixer and 2 sets of monitors with a stereo receiver/cassette deck.

Donuts was made almost exclusively on his mp while in his hospital bed.
>>
>>68274663
Those samples can be used in any DAW, you just add them as a library. And both DAWs already have everything you will need as a starter, so you don't have to even worry much about other samples anyway.

I'm personally an FL user but I also have Ableton, I can just say that FL has a huge library of awesome instruments and drum samples, it's synth "Harmor" is great, although very very complex.

It's what workflow works for you the best, really. I'm still trying out Ableton and even though I like the simplicity and a slight productivity boost, I'm still a fan of FL Studio.

Don't want to sound too much of a dick here but you can improve everywhere you've not even broken the skin in 2 weeks...Jesus fucking christ
I mean ask for tips and advice but most professionals take 2 weeks to make a track after 10 years plus of producing

waht he is saying is true tho. You forget your asking people who want to make careers out of producing and they know that the half an hour that you put into this is not worth giving feedback too when you should be focusing on a lot more other things that would benefit you way more in the long run

>I bet his track his better than yours faggola
I wasn't debating his songs being better than mine. My point was 2 weeks is a splash in the ocean. Asking for feedback on a track after only doing something for 2 weeks is pretty dumb..."hey guys hows my piano playing I've only been playing for 2 weeks?"
Asking specific advice like "I've only been producing for 2 weeks and I'd like some help getting my kicks to sound punchier" is totally fine.

I'm making an album right now and each song begins with a 10-15 second clip of quotes from different sources that inspired me. Is this trashy?
>>
>>68279265

>>
>>68279265

Nah family
>>
>>68279265
hey if they actually are the song's inspiration and not just shoehorned in because you feel like it /needs/ to start with a clip, that's awesome and a cool insight into the creation of the song and the mood you're trying to evoke. go for it as long as it's genuine
>>
>>68279178
really like the drums, good song
>>
Regarding workflow in FL studio:

do you use one separate track for every pattern? or mixer channel? or instrument?

how do you deal with automation clips? do you group them or anything?

also, do you name and color your mixer tracks, instruments and playlist tracks?

cause I've been working with fl for 7 years or something and to be honest my projects are a complete mess.
I don't do any of those things above and my playlists are literally Tetris.
>>
>>68279589
>do you use one separate track for every pattern? or mixer channel? or instrument?

what I meant by this was separate playlist track.
>>
>>68279280
>>68279287
>>68279468
Thanks guys
Each clip comes from a source that inspired me, and I have a connection with because of the time in which I first heard it. The idea is to play it and then have the song capture the atmosphere and emotion of the time from when I heard it.
Thank you my dudes!
>>
>>68279589
>do you use one separate track for every pattern? or mixer channel? or instrument?
yes to all the above, I use seperate tracks 100% of the time unless it's a melody
>how do you deal with automation clips? do you group them or anything?
nope
>also, do you name and color your mixer tracks, instruments and playlist tracks?
I rename my drums, that's about it though

>>68279559
Thanks man!
>>
>>68279685
>yes to all the above, I use seperate tracks 100% of the time unless it's a melody

Shit gets so vertical then though
Depends on the kind of music you make I guess.
but in the project I'm currently working on I'm at playlist track 55 already while having a lot of stuff on the same tracks.
so much scrolling
>>
>>68279774

Yeah, if you make Dubstep or something. 55 is still a lot though.

I spend a lot of time in the channel rack too

>>68275884
For the vocal sample in the beginning You should look into late-90's to early 2000's southern/Houston rap. For the actual main sample You should listen to 70's and 80's Funk and Soul

I been out of the synth game for a good while and have been recently getting back into it, I stopped about 6 years ago and I'm shocked how insanely expensive vintage synths have become, they were super trendy back then

I bought a Oberheim Matrix 6 for $400
Sequential Six Trak for $300
JX8P for $250
I had a friend with a Juno 106 he got for $400

Even newer stuff that was used seemed cheaper, I had one of the cool keyboard monomachines that I got for $850 and a machinedrum uwmkII+ that I got for $950

you can change how that works in options.txt with the line ThinningAggressiveness

When recording automation data, Live smoothes the recorded data with a pre-defined value. The default value is = 0.45

Higher value = more breakpoints eliminated.

Example: -ThinningAggressiveness=0.1

is anyone here involved in commercial audio production? Like doing sound for commercials, TV, Film etc.

I was considering it as a career choice, because it seems like it pays well and not as competitive as trying to produce music for artists. From what ive researched, it seems to pay well too. It would be cool to eventually get to do film scores too.

I made this yesterday and I'm looking for some criticism on it. I have no soundproofing where i recorded the vocals so I had to make up a little bit using utility and reverb as well as doubling.

Are my drums too compressed? I've been searching for little bit more of a punchier, livelier sound.

Not the anon you asked, but I can easily spend over 20mins on one drum sound. I have been producing for over 10 years too.
Music production seems to get harder by the day for me. Years ago I was happy with just using a drum kit I liked and chucking a load of stuff together that worked. Now its like I have to apply everything I've learnt along the way. Along with being bored as fuck with all the styles Ive got into writing in the past it just seems a lot harder the longer I produce. Obviously I'd like to think I'm much better than I was when I first started, but as far as writing music I think it gets harder by the day

>so /prod/ I have the opprotunity to move my home studio (pc 2i4 monitors couple of synths) to the back of my brothers new business. Do you think it would be a good idea?
Not really. I can't think of any plus points for that other than if its somewhere where you can make lots of noise and get no complaints.
On the downside if you want to use your studio it would mean going to your brothers place of business rather than it being at home.

>I would eventually like to have clients and record them do you think I can do it with the gear I have now? I would get a mic. is this a good idea family?
Again no. I'd imagine most musicians would have a basic bedroom studio set up much the same as what you have, maybe they'd not have the same synths but unless you have something thats very much sought after then most people would not bother. I think if you are charging for a service you need to have something much more appealing than a basic studio setup. Once you have that then yes it'd be a great idea.

For example my bedroom studio consists of the following:
Mac
18x20 audio interface
Some midrange monitors
16 channel mixer
couple of hardware synths
couple of hardware samplers
some outboard effects units
Maschine Studio
Microphone
Guitar and amp
a bunch of bought software including Audio editing software, DAWs, Komplete 10 Ultimate, other random plugins.
I can't really think of any reason why anyone would pay to come and record in my studio.

here is a list of stuff available in my local recording studio:
Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG and Sontronics microphones
Full Mapex drumkit with cymbals and snare
Orange, Vox and Blackstar guitar amps
TC Electronic bass cab and head
A wide range of regular and boutique guitar pedals
Apple Mac running Pro Tools HD, Cubase and Logic
Massive suite of UAD and Waves plug-ins
Universal Audio Apollo interface with UAD processing
SSL Nucleus and three AVID Artist Mix control surfaces
Yamaha, Focal and Adam monitors
Various preamps

>>
>>68287822
this percussion is tite af holmes i dig this. im >>68283021 btw

first thing is I hope it's a premaster cuz this shit is quiet. Next, that main synth that starts at :44 is doing this weird pumping thing that I cannot tell is accidental or not. It might be the sidechain because at 1:24 when it plays solo it doesn't do it. Last sugg is that bass is fat...too fat. It's overpowering the obvious limiting/compression on the master and murdering your hi frequencies. But that's all really minor stuff dude the composition is good
>>
>>68284269
mess with the velocity of your piano and spread the notes out a bit to humanize it a bit more, they sound very programmed as is

and yeah, i think the drums are a bit overcompressed, a shorter transient is what you want to aim for if you want it to be punchy and prominent in the mix, more compression for boomier
>>
https://clyp.it/cozfd3us plz 4chan tell my why im so bad
>>
>>68288202
o shit also thanks
update: https://clyp.it/hkurpsow
>>
>>68287822
the use of foley and the chords are really lovely, good stuff there dude

i'd suggest using a ghost kick to sidechain the main synth at 0:44, the big thumpy kick makes it duck down a bit harshly

the bass - heavy tail of the kick is also clashing with the sub a bit, so replacing the kick for a shorter one entirely might fix the main issues with the mix
>>
>>68288299
couple of questions that might help you out...
what daw?
what are your export settings?
where do you get your samples?

I'm asking because the quality sounds genuinely degraded. Like fractions of the actual sound wave are missing in the file
>>
>>68288395
It's in FL studio. whatever the default export options are. I recorded it using a shitty cable plugged into a guitar so that's probably why it sounds bad.
>>
>>68288356
well for starters, your instruments completely drown out the drums, there are a few things that aren't matching key, and there doesn't really seem to be any kind of central idea that holds it all together

turn down everything except the drums by a significant amount, look up some general mixing/ sidechain compression tutorials, and make music 'til you cough in c major my dude

also, really listen to whatever artists got you into production in the first place, and try to separate each element and instrument to understand its purpose in the song

Hi, /mu/. I came here just to ask a simple question, do you think this synthesizer sound can be realistically recreated in FL studio or am I just wasting my time? I found it on a guy's vine page and I am interested in using this type of sound to make a sound theme for my Linux installation in FL, but I don't know the first thing about mimicking sounds. If it can't be done, that's cool, I'll give up on it, but I just want somebody's honest opinion of whether or not I'm just wasting my time, haha. Thanks, /mu/.

Is there anyway to stop my midi controller (1st gen axiom 61) sending out fader changes and only send out modwheel/pitchbend/aftertouch CC messages?

I'm sending midi from ableton to reason in rewire, to the PX7 FM synth and even a tiny movement on the faders makes the sound change completely.
>>
>>68294507
I'm not a breakcore producer but you'll be wanting to get a tracker style DAW for that kind of thing it would seem.
>>
>>68295257

An Axiom 61 user in the forum post below managed this for their pitch bend wheel that was broken - they pretty much assigned it a "no CC assigned" value and you'd need to do this for each fader.

Keep in mind with this method you'd need to re-assign CCs to the faders if you want to use them again later:

are you applying additional reverb? if so, you might be splitting hairs... unless you are purposefully trying to retain (steal) other producers' stereo spectrum work.

You sound like you haven't been producing long, and no one mentioned anything about reverb except you, so I'm just gonna call you a faggot and be on my way.

native instruments and izotope vsts are some of the most popular. i think i would invest in mixing vsts rather than synths tho. maybe a unique sampler or something.

All the free http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/ (Compressors, saturators, reverberators)
TDR Nova GE, Slick EQ GE, Apqualizer, Sytrus, Synth1, Kontakt, Korg's M1 VST, Voxengo Boogex, Faturator, CamelPhat, Vapor, DeVerb, and DeFilter. Fabfilter and Melda sets.

TDR Nova GE is the enhanced version of a dynamic equalizer which will raise or lower bands depending on the input signal which is very cool.
TDR Slick EQ GE is the enhanced version of a very tasteful EQ. Apqualizer is an EQ for precise surgical EQing, like removing rings.
Sytrus is a stock FL Studio synth with lots of possibilities thanks to the FM / RM matrix hooking up 6 or 8 oscillators with subtractive and additive functions as well as waveform loading. It's disgustingly well equipped for most things.
Synth1 is a free synthesizer based on the old Nord Lead II. Very simple but capable of a lot, lots of presets out there too.
Kontakt is your staple sampler. There's no sampled instrument library worth getting that isn't on Kontakt.
M1 is an official software version of Korg's M1, a big ol cheesy sampler. Love it.
Voxengo Boogex is a guitar amp and thank God almighty they finally made it stereo, the stubborn cunts.
Faturator is distortion and degradation, it's a unique grindy cardboardy sound.
CamelPhat is saturation, distortion, compression, filtering. A staple.
Vapor is flange with diffusion. Think flanged reverb.
DeVerb removes reverb, DeFilter removes filtering. They work better than you'd think but worse than you'd hope.
FabFilter and Melda have good all-around FX. FabFilter has great sound, Melda has great options.

I agree. I'd also add FabFilter stuff. I wanted some mixing and effects VSTs but to be fair I ended up with N.I Komplete Ultimate as by the time you've added a few compressors, EQ's and reverbs to your list you are pretty much the Komplete Ultimate price range.
Waves bundles are also quite good value for money.

I still want to get Fabfilter ProQ after demoing it absolutly great EQ
