I can't say exactly because I'm phoneposting but... essentially, yes? I have the main track turned up. But it only sounds shitty when exported. I could not do that but then the final result will be borderline inaudible.

Hey is there a way to offset midi notes with the groove pool in ableton? All I can get it do do is add a shuffle, but I want the notes to remain straight and just play slightly before/after the metronome

It seems that War of the Worlds is often attributed to the Thunderchild synthesizer, but the Yamaha CS-80 replaced almost everything that came from a Thunderchild in its creation, and the CS-80 has two software recreations, Arturia CS-80 V and Memorymoon ME80. Thunderchild seems to have none.

He also used an ARP Odyssey mkI and a Freeman string synthesizer. The ARP Odyssey has many software recreations, but I've had bad lucky running them in FL so I can't recommend any. You'll have to go through them and try them out and see what doesn't act funny.

I think you'd be fine with something like Synth1, a wow & flutter effect like wow & flutter www.interruptor.ch/vst_donationware.shtml and some analogue-modelled flavour from http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/ particularly ThrillseekerVBL and TesslaSE, perhaps also ToneBuster's ReelBus or U-He's Satin for tape flavour. Straight up channel some recorded analogue noise into your effects chain too.

>Anyway, Ken did most of the synth-work for WOTW using an ARP Odyssey mkI, Freeman string synthesizer (prototype #2) and a modified Yamaha CS-80.

i'd like some help on where to take this track, i don't wanna make it a straight loop
also i would really appreciate if someone could help me find some relatively easy to use (and free) soft synths. i've exclusively been using 3xOsc on my tracks and i'd definitely like to add some different sounds into the mix
>>
I posted this the other day
https://clyp.it/2dspxt2z

I've made some changes and I think I might have overcooked it a bit. Obviously needs fleshing out to a whole song, more variation and some sort of a top lead in place of a vocal (or perhaps a vocal)

Is it better or worse and does it sound like shit? (audiowise)

I think you have a little to much going on in certain segments, you must let the melodies have room to breathe, right now, i feel theres alot of fighting going on for the room there is.

From 56 and onwards you have some chords going on, a bouncy melody that moves up and down the register and two very tonal tom hits that are fighting for attention. try taking one two out and let them trade places after it has played a few bars.

That is only my opinion though, somebody else would probably not have the same issue with it.
>>

>>
>>68306246
3xOsc can get things done but it has a very low quality sound due to aliasing, which may go away on export if the quality settings are turned up but you'll hear it while working at least. Just use Sytrus, it's mad good. If it's too complicated to you, don't worry, it looks intimidating because of all the features but you don't have to use them all. If you don't want FM stuff you can just use the matrix on the right as a mixer for the individual oscillators and use it like a normal subtractive synthesizer like 3xOsc.

I think you could get a nice call and response going on with the gated pad and square lead / bass. Like 0:46 in, before the second chord if you came in with a little phrase from the square while the next chord plays it could be neat and sound dynamic. They don't all need to play at the same time at the end, give them each a turn to say their part in the conversation.

Think of the instruments as talking to each other, one says a phrase and sustains while the other has something to say, and then the other replies. Thinking about it like this can help get things going.

Speaking of 3xOsc, one of my favourite things to do with it was to set the first to a saw, turn off the second, and set the third to a detuned sine 1 octave up with AM enabled. It made a strange churning bass when distorted.

First impression - John Carpenter as fuck! I like it. The bass stabs are a bit much, use them more sparingly. The fact that it layers is neat but it gets a bit thick and muddled. I think you should change things so it all really locks-in and starts driving at the 00:45 mark or at the 00:52 mark, latest. Because it's around there that I just sorta feel like it gets lost. It has tons of potential m8, but I'm not yet stunned. I get bored by 1m.

warped soundscapey stuff pushes my mind towards wavetables. Are you really getting the most out of alchemy already? Logic's ES2 synth and Alchemy are both killer synths.

Your post sort of implies that you are after a hardware synth, at least in my reading of it. Waldorf blofeld might be a good one for you. It would be a good choice for long evolving pads and evolving sounds in general. I've not used one, but I own an older waldorf synth, the Q, which is really killer for this type of thing- and I assume the blofeld is by extension.

On the soft synth side, check out zebra2 and serum.

I've been using the Korg iMS-20 on my iPad for a while now (since it first came out) and I really like it. I was hoping to buy the MS-20 module but it looks like by the time I have any cash to buy one they'll all be gone. (I think there's 3 left in the U.k).
I'd never considered the MS20 mini until recently due to not wanting to spend £400+ on a synth that's got 3.5mm jacks, wobbly knobs and an issue with being noisy!

How bad are these issues, am I just being paranoid? I'm guessing it's built like a Volca which is fine for a £100 synth but I'd worry spending £400 on something built like that. How noisy is that fucking thing? How long do you think those mini jacks will last being plugged/unplugged all the time?

Warm and ethereal, digging it. I feel like the ending could expand itself into a whole different track. Love the chord progressions as well.
>>
>>68313881
>I'd never considered the MS20 mini until recently due to not wanting to spend £400+ on a synth that's got 3.5mm jacks, wobbly knobs and an issue with being noisy!

>wobbly knobs
People exaggerate the issues honestly. Mine may be an outlier as it is from Japan but there is very little wobble on the knobs. Some don't wobble at all, more than knobs than not infact.

>noise
I haven't had too much trouble with noise on mine, but I have heard some that are worse than others. It's not much noisier than my Minibrute though, you can filter it out pretty easily honestly.

>3.5mm jacks
This is the only real issue (besides the CV thing obviously). They're certainly sturdy enough, but the 3.5mm to 1/4 adapters does get a bit tedious. The only one I'm genuinely paranoid about is the signal out. That being said, I can't see it being that hard to replace in the event that it does break.

>I'm guessing it's built like a Volca
It's much better built than a Volca, but it's not as well made as an old MS-20.

Overall it has some flaws, why they didn't give it Volt/oct and pulse width modulation is beyond me, but the pros outweigh the cons for sure.

I really slam the crap out of mine and it takes it like a champ.

>I figured the noise issues weren't as bad as reported, same with the knobs and sockets.most of my gear is noisy anyway.
It really isn't that bad unless you do specific patches. I can almost completely filter it out with an ISP Decimator ProRack but I don't tend to bother.

>I wonder if Korg will bring out a mini desktop version soon.
Maybe, they have the desktop version already and they just did the ARP Odyssey desktop. Fingers crossed.

How do I get samples of instruments?

Is it possible to get samples of all the old DOS midi sounds? those would actually serve my purposes pretty well

I will definitely look into the Biofield. I'm looking up demos and it sounds pretty interesting. I actually didn't know that Logic had Alchemy built in - it looks like my version is just a bit too old for it. I'll have to try and figure out how to update my cracked version, that's a fantastic synth to come built-in with a DAW.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I was definitely looking for a hardware synth. There are obviously lots of great software synths but they seem tough to manage if I want to play live without using a backing track or something.

Unfortunately I don't really know as much about synths as I wish I did. What's wavetable synthesis again?

>>
>>68318298

(not the anon you replued to) You pretty much just load them on a laptop computer and use a midi controller if you use them live. When you say soundscapey, that usually means
A) at least 6 voices of polyphony, therefore cheap analog is out
B) lots of effects which are more available for softsynths.
C) sampler/soundfont orchestral synths put through effects
>>

you spent all that money on both machines without knowing the first thing about them? come on
>>
>>68315064
i'm not quite sure what makes it sound like background music, i think it has to do with the fact it sort of constantly flows at the same level, there's not much variety in terms of intensity, which can be a good thing if you're making certain types of dance music or background music but if you're going for a different feel you might want to create some difference between parts, some more intense and dense some less, some build ups and so on

the composition is very good, especially since you're "fairly new", but the sounds could use a bit of work especially the drum samples

Depends on how you like to work. I prefer Hardware to software as it seems to suit my work style more, I prefer playing with physical functions rather than using mouse. midi controllers I can't really be bothered to assign to things, with that sort of thing I prefer controllers like maschine thats pre mapped. I'm not a analogue purist in any way though I have lots more digital gear than analogue

I have a Focusrite 6i6, connected to my PC, that is causing a ton of static.

The FocusRite is connected to my PC using stereo 1/4 cables, which split into a single TRS cable that goes into my PC's motherboard.

I don't hear any static when I plug headphones into the audio interface. But when I record the Line In on my PC, like when I'm streaming online, I get HEAVY static and buzzing.

Any idea why this is brothers?
>>
my macbook has been weird today

ive been making music, i use both headphones and monitors to reference so i am frequently going back and forth .

first, the right headphone stops working. i'm not sure if its completely out. it might be at like 10% volume, not too sure. it just suddenly stopped working while i was using them. I think the actual headphones are fine because i plugged them into my phone and they were working fine. so that leads me to think its the audio output of my macbook

then 30 minutes later, no sound was being sent into my monitors. i use an audio interface.

i think the built in speakers on my macbook is only working on the left side as well.

What gives lads??
>>
>>68327474
also, i always plug my headphones directly into my macbook. not the audio interface. maybe i will try plugging them into the interface to see what happens
>>
>>68327290
you're supposed to plug that focusrite audio interface into your computers usb port so it can replace you computers internal audio interface.

so start with that.

Have you ever sampled someone off of /prod/, clyp or soundcloud without their consent before /prod/?
>>
>>68327290
yeah, don't do that. What the other guy said. You don't want to take the sound from your shitty PC soundcard and deliver it to the interface. The audio interface will replace your sound card, after you hook it up via usb, and you select it in the prefs of your OS.

definitely not advisable to plug line level, high impedance signals into random plugs in your interface.

Takes too long to get into the meat of it. A lot of the samples sound so robotic and clinical (not organic) This is a style thing, but damn, Every drum beat sounds the same. It should get to 2:40 so much quicker when the synths come in. The synths also soften the sound of the drums. I'm not a big fan of the guitar that comes in at 3:12. It changes the mood you had to like a goofy kind of happy/bouncy sort of thing. The swelling that happens half way through completely drowns out everything. 5:00 sound cool. Overall, I think it's too long with not a lot of ideas in it. But I did like the ideas you did have. If you want to loop for 6:48, it's going to have to be a really good loop.

Hope I wasn't to harsh, I liked some parts

compression swells aren't that cool anymore tho nice lil bells in the mix. generic plateau work on that.

I really like it. What do you use to make music? DAWs, VSTs, instruments of choice?

Hi /prod/ I need advice about buying usb audio interface. I would like to use the line level XLR out from my bass amp to record to computer and understand an audio interface is the way to go for that.

I don't intend to use the interface for mics. Does it make a difference in this scenario if the audio interface has a tube preamp or solid state?

I'm willing to spend a bit extra if the ~$100 inferfaces are total garbage but I'm not sure what constitutes good value. All i'm looking for is a thing that will deliver the existing signal as-is from my amp through to computer without degrading anything.

This is just for home use. Not recording for highest possible quality here.

I actually expanded it quite a lot and gave it some structure

/prod/ can you guys help me find a synth that i could also use as a midi controller?

i was looking for some korg ms2000s but can't find any. any other suggestions? microbrute? budget is pretty low, around $400ish

you need to read up on stereo placement. There are things like that backround arp that should not be in the front, and then for no good reason, bass and drums are all in the back. It's like you live in some alternate reality where everything in mixing is flipped. It's almost definitely your monitoring tho homie no biggie no offense meant.
>>
i updated to the new mac osx and now my bootleg version of live wont even open if i run the executable what do i do.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE tell me the name of the sample? I'm sure it's a fairly common sample. I've heard it before
>>
>>68363122
yeah my monitors are dogshit right now
it's been like that for half a year
my old ones died before my eyes when someone spilled a can of beer over them

didn't realize it was that off. now that I'm listening to the sound with headphones

ordering some hs7 tomorrow.
