Second-hand HSS MIM strat, around $350. Something cheaper? Yamaha Pacifica or Squier strat.
Second-hand because 1) it's cheaper with no discernible reduction in quality and 2) so you won't lose money on the resale if you quit.

I kinda want a guitar just to fuck around with, I bought a cheap, used chink guitar before and hated it, is there a way to buy a body and a decent neck and then just install the hardware and the pickups myself? They're legitimately good for what they are, it takes some time to get used to the rubber strings but they're an actual instrument and not just a toy or a joke. Obviously inaudible acoustically, but that should be obvious.
>>
>>68321326
You're going to get a guitar with a bolt on neck no matter how you look at it and honestly a guitar is only as good as the player. Just pick up something that you think looks really awesome so you will want to pick it up as much as possible.

I mean, for 80 bucks you can get a Harley Benton tele, so shouldn't I be able to get a decent neck, any body and decent hardware/pickups if I spend a bit more and assemble it myself?
>>
>>68321328

unless you are switching to humbuckers, it's silly to change the single coils in your tele. the mim's have fine, perfectly functional good sounding single coils.

if you are playing through a crappy amp at bedroom volume it's doubly stupid.

pickups are basically magnets, and lollars are overpriced as hell

sure, throwing in a set of 250 dollar lollars will make your tele sound different but it's a subtle ass change and will probably leave you feeling like you wasted money

get a Yamaha Pacifica. The cheapest ones cost <200 bucks and their necks/fretwork are better than MIM Fenders or squiers.
>>
>>68321387
I recently asked myself this as a beginner and realized two things.

Yes you can play songs with an slow, easy riff or some power chords so you don't feel like absolute garbage and have some fun, but you're not really learning much. Or you can play a song you like (so you're motivated) that's not crazy hard, but challenging. So I guess it depends on what you mean by "best".

it's absolutely happening. If you know how to pawn shop or craigslist or ebay it's so happening

pic related - Yamaha RGX from pawnshop for roughly 70 dollars, seymour duncan mini hb used from ebay for 60 dollars

I know it doesn't look too good but that's considerably less than 200 bucks and you'll have to take my word on how good it sounds and plays

guitars are cheap man
>>

>>
>>68321750

discard if you want, I've been playing for 21 years and have owned over 25 guitars, including Fenders, Gibsons, high end Ibanezes, all kinds of 'nice' guitars.

Yamaha's are the best guitars in the <500 range PERIOD, acoustic and electric
>>
>>68320664
Are there electric guitars with the same string spacing and scale length as a classical? An electric classical, or something along those lines?
>>
>>68321455
>I want a guitar with not completely terrible pickups, with a decent neck, that is comfortable to play and stays in tune.
If you want all those things then you're better off just saving up one or two hundred more dollars so you can buy something decent that you will actually want to play. When it comes to cheap guitars a hundred bucks can make a world of difference in playability.
>>
>>68321384
There is nothing wrong with a bolt on.

I would take the Ibanez all access neck joint bolt on over anything. I've had guitars with set necks before and I want my bolt ons.

Guys help before I make a stupid mistake

So I saw a friend using an Orange Micro Dark:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Orange-Amplifiers/Micro-Dark-20W-Tube-Hybrid-Amp-Head.gc

With an orange cabinet:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Orange-Amplifiers/PPC-Series-PPC212OB-120W-2x12-Open-Back-Guitar-Speaker-Cab.gc#

And it sounded great. Then he told me the price, he got both bundled together in store for $750, and of course, smile gone.

I'm planning on putting:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/hot-rodded-humbucker-set

into my first electric guitar and just making it look nice, all in all should set me back $200, but the fucking amp head and cabinet man.

Can someone help me here? Is it worth it? Should I just look into building my own cab, maybe with V30's?
>>
>>68322024
You're right, there is nothing wrong with it. I was just trying to point out that he's not going to get the most high end guitar. I actually own a couple myself, I think ibanez has the best bang for your buck guitars around.
>>
>>68322101

>>68322082
I watched a video recently about building your own speaker cabinets and it looked easy as fuck. I don't have any of the tools for cutting wood and sanding, but it you did it shouldn't be that hard of a project.
And I checked the price of a Celestion V30 and was blown away by how cheap they are. I always assumed they were way more expensive.

I would love to make my own cabs if I only had access to the tools.

Also, posting my question here again for more answers:
I currently use an off-brand strato plugged to my computer with a 6.35 -> 3.5mm adapter and I'm looking to improve my sound. What does /gg/ think will make a better improvement: buying a proper audio interface with 6.35mm input or getting a better guitar with at least some humbuckers?

How come guitarists are usually retarded? Self included. We can't sing, we don't have good rhythm. We can't read music and can barely read tabs. in general, how long does it take you guys to learn a song? for argument's sake, lets say something with a 16 bar verse, 12 bar chorus, and 16 bar solo. the verse/chorus repeat a few times but the riffs are basically the same.
>>
>>68335153
Depends entirely on style and complexity. Doing a simple rock song a la AC/DC or something would probably take me 30 mins to have at a decent live quality. Figuring out what I want to do for a bebop tune is gonna be different, since I'll probably sit down and do harmonic analysis on what exactly is going on and figure out all my options for everything. The simpler the chords, the more similar to set forms like blues, the less demanding the riffs, the looser the band requirements of me ("just jam man" vs "You've got the harmony part, right? Fourths on the second verse, fifths on the choruses"), the less time it'll take.

The more tunes you learn and the more the tune you are learning shares with tunes you already know, the less time it takes.

>>68335242
>"You've got the harmony part, right? Fourths on the second verse, fifths on the choruses"

They mean that on the second verse you play a harmony note that is the melody note that is up a perfect fourth, and on the choruses you play the harmony note as the melody note up a perfect fifth.

>>
Thinking about getting a 7 string at some point, but I don't like the wizard necks on Ibanez guitars. Is Jackson the way to go?
>>
>>68335475
so how would you figure that out on the spot if it's a complex melody?

or would you just strum a chord rhythm at the proper interval from that bar's chord? like if the prog was c c f g, would you play f f Bb c?
>>
>>68335603
You figure it out on the spot by knowing your scales really, really well. But that's also why I said it would take more time to learn a song where a band required you to play harmony parts. Learning the proper harmony parts is difficult unless you have practiced that exact skill a lot (which is worth doing).

The harmony part is relative to the melody, rather than the rhythm harmony. It refers to a single note line that is played at an interval to the melody, creating an intervallic diad or a chord depending on the number of harmony parts. It imitates vocal harmonization.

Here's a video on it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9ocZIjZa3Q
I don't guarantee it's any good, but you can look for other videos on your own.

another question for you: when my friend and i are jamming and he's playing a chord progression, i find only the root sounds good played over top of his chord, even if i stay within the key (even if i stay within the major triad). do you know why this might be?

All right fa/gg/ots, time for a game.
You've got 2000€ to spend on a guitar and an amp. You're not a begginer, you just randomly got 2000€ and want to spend it on some good shit.
2 rules:
1. it has to be giggable
2. no pedals
Any guitar, any amp, you can mod the guitar. (pickups, strap locks, blah blah...)

Well that's Jim Root's signature model and he said that he loves all the Fender body shapes and wanted to be like his idols who played telecasters etc. but the classic tele sound doesn't go with his style of music and playing. He designed his signature Fenders with mahogany bodies, emg pickups etc. to achieve his sound while still playing the classic Fender shapes.

In my opinion it's a great idea, since not everyone who plays heavier music wants to play those pointy edgelord guitars.
I'd like to have his sig Jazzmaster but I feel like it's way overpriced and I'd change the emg's for passive pickups anyways so it would add to the cost aswell.

work on raising the tempo first then, set a minimum of like 5bpm a day.
Once you reach 160bpm, go back to 80bpm but play in 8ths and record yourself. On some DAWs you can even have the visual confirmation that your notes fall on the beat by just looking at the attack.
It's not a hard thing to work on until you get into some more complex rhythms like triplets over 4/4 or polyrhythms.

Has anyone here played this guitar or any newer Carvin guitar? I'm currently saving up for a new guitar and I'd like to know if the Carvin JB are any good.

No one likes a know-it-all because of their pretentious behaviour.

Every time someone complains about anime posting it signifies that they are a functional human with proper social skills than fits into society

Anyways, is the Laney AOR30 a good budget amp for stoner rock/metal or should I look elsewhere?

Was going to say that. Love Washburn, best cheap guitars. Got a 335 knockoff from them, and their standard dreadnought (all solid wood, spruce top and zebrawood sides and back, like 250 bucks w/ a hard case, had it for 10 years so far)

Been learning this album on bass recently. Definitely one of the most fun collections of songs to play on bass, thanks to based Zender. Currently in the middle of "Music of the Mind". As an aside, the Rhodes piano is also nearly unparalleled in its cool factor on this album, Toby whatsisname is a pretty great keyboard player.

More good albums for bass geetahr?
>>

If you like Jamiroquai then definitely check out funk. The entire genre of funk. I watch old episodes of Soul Train to find new songs and bands i've never heard of before. Anything with Abe Laboriel on bass. Early Stevie Wonder. And also some of The Jackson 5 has good, fun to play, not too simple bass lines.

Disco, too.
>>
>>68342603
P-funk or just don't bother at all

Fuck yes George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic. Good stuff.

I also like some jazz with nice snappy walking bass lines. Like this one.

For sure, Eddie Hazel was a most dope guitarist. Super Stupid is a great track for hearing his playing.
>>
>>68342830
very nice. Saw Tower of Power live.

Sounds like a q envelope on that bass.

different anon here

Got a Q-Tron myself, old big box one. Cheap as hell on Reverb. Great site, that. Sounds really cool

Explain picks to me.

I use a really thin pick, I think it's .73 or similar. Why do so many of these shreddy metal guys using really thick heavy picks? 1.0+ thick ones. Seems like thinner would be better for shred because the flexibility in the pick would be better for alternate picking.
>>
>>68343417
They use heavy strings and thin tortex picks like you're probably using won't create much sound.
>>
>>68343417
thick pick means there's no moment where your pick is bent, you don't have to "wait" for the pick to go back into its original position.
Some thick picks are also not just plain flat, like the Jazz III ultex 2.0mm I use.

>tfw the only good vocalists are assholes, massive drug addicts, or both
>>
>>68343417
Pick flex is generally not desirable for the kind of sound you want in metal. A lot of flex can make for a kind of sloppy feel when doing fast palm muted chugachiggity chugging on the low E and A.
>>
>>68343417
heavy picks are more accurate and easier to control in my experience family
>>
>>68343417
try one, you wont go back to the smaller sizes.

Singers are a burden we all have to bear, sadly. All i ask is that singer shows up on time, functionally sober, able to sing on key. Apparently that's a bridge too far for most (all) of them.
>>
>>68343417
Thin pick = slower attack
Thick pick = faster attack

Think of it in terms of your average ADSR envelope on a synth if you have issues wrapping your head around it.
