Second-hand HSS MIM strat, around $350. Something cheaper? Yamaha Pacifica or Squier strat.
Second-hand because 1) it's cheaper with no discernible reduction in quality and 2) so you won't lose money on the resale if you quit.

This is the guitar of a guy I know.

Essentially he channeled his inner Jackson Pollock and threw house paint at it from across his garage.

He loves glam metal and dresses like Vince Neil in day-to-day life. He rarely washes his hair so he can tease it for hours on end.

He plays as fast as he can but never got good enough to sync up his hands. He also plays with no pick, preferring to use his index finger (not fingerstyle) as a pick. He's probably got some fucking monster callouses cause he always chewed his nails a lot. Haven't seen him in a few years though, maybe he stopped doing that and has Wylde talons now.
>>
>>68344161
I'd be his friend irl.
>>
>>68344161
>He also plays with no pick, preferring to use his index finger (not fingerstyle) as a pick
The best guitarist I know plays like that. He pinches his finger and his thumb together and treats the nails like a pick, and somehow he has super good accuracy that way.
>>

Should I get a 4 string or a 5 string bass? I wanna play shit like Lightning Bolt and 385. I especially wanna learn to slap good. I know someone who has a 5 string I could borrow if the music demands it, but is owning one going to make playing things written for 4 strings harder?
>>
>>68346051
you certainly wouldn't have to shift as much if you aren't worrying about the tone created by the different strings.

Big difference in thickness in sound for the C between the E and A strings.
>>
>>68344806
I've always had good experiences posting here. You guys are alright in my book.
>>
>>68346075
Hmm, true. When I'm playing covers though I usually try to play it the way the original person did though, so that advantage would only help me when writing my own music. In that case it may be a luxury I can afford to live without.
>>
>>68346313
what if you decide to write your own music?
>>
>>68346051
I don't even get why 4 strings are still more popular, you can't move as much vertically and the 5th string isn't that much of an annoyance.

I can't choose, and everything is 50/50 on the internet. Fender Standard Fretless for $600, or this Warwick vette Standard (Made in Germany) for $750? The neck and fingerboard as well as the EQ for the Corvette are better imo, but a lot of people can't seem to stand the tone of the Warwick. I can't really play either, no local places carry either of these.

>>68346313
I was looking at buying a 5 but never got any use out of the low B; 5 strings are for /bass/ people; if you are all about being a bass player, doing bass stuff and only that, go with the 5, as it is unarguably more options. However, if you like Lightning Bolt (I love them, and the bassist plays a wonky 5 now. I'm certain you won't need 2 banjo strings for your A and E. their old records were all with a 4) and slap, a 4 is probably the way to go. Sorry for the long answer.
>>
>>68346051
If you're getting 1 bass and you have a use for a 5er then get the 5 string. But keep in mind that muting will be a bit harder (which you'll just get used to honestly) but it might be an issue for longer, especially when you want to play slap.
>>
>>68346439
Get the Warwick. Friend of mine has one and it's absolutely killer.
>>
Looking into lessons but most teachers only do 30 minute lessons and the few that do hour lessons are super pricey.
I feel like 30 minutes is nothing, like you show up, go over last week's practice, then they tell you what to practice next week and it's time to leave. No time to go in depth about anything. Any advice?
>>
Did I fuck up getting a guitar with a floating bridge?
>>
>>68346515
I took weekly 30 minute lessons for a couple years, and it certainly always felt fast, but I was always able to go over a warmup sort of deal, like a slap exercise, and then a song that we were either working on the week(s) before, or a new one. If you are new to guitar they're super helpful.
>>
>>68346341
I already do, but I generally use vsts, piano, or samples for bass. I just haven't played bass before so I don't really know what things will be easier on a bass with 5 strings.
>>
>>68346515
Put an add on Craigslist looking for tutor, paying a case of beer per lesson.
>>
>>68346439
Thanks, this is mainly what I was wondering. I figure if there's something I specifically need a 5 string for I know someone with one that I can borrow.
>>
>>68346668
The nut width will definitely be wider compared to a 5 string, and even more on a 6 string. Presumably this is compensated for by decreasing the thickness of the neck.
String spacing will be a separate issue entirely.
If you are comfortable with bass lines starting from E and up, then no worries about requiring a 5 string. I prefer a 5 string so that I don't need to retune for Drop D or lower down to the B.

What are the things I need to do to my guitar when turning it into a fretless guitar, besides pulling off the frets (and maybe filling the gaps up)?
>>
I want to start playing electric slide. As far as I can tell the action is high on slide guitars anywhere so does it matter if I just buy a piece of shit to play on?
>>
>>68347616
The nut slots need to be filed deeper, you definitely want to fill in the fret slots and then you should sand down the entire fingerboard to make sure it is level.
Also, flat wound strings or you'll chew up the finger board.
>>
>>68347703
Thanks for the advice.
Do you know what I could use sand the fingerboard to be level? I doubt its really possible to do with a handheld device/sanding by hand (maybe it is?).

Of course it is, you sand slowly and you check with a radius block. You can also try using it as it is and just sanding out the bumps and imperfections it has.
>>
>>68347986
Could I take a radius block and then stick sand paper to it so I can sand the entire thing into the radius and level needed?
I don't know much about luthier tools but I can diy most things I need.

So many scales in so many modes in keys with positions like pic related, there's no way I can practice even the 10 most common scales with their dozens of different variations, right? Or is there something I'm missing and are only a few ever really used? Like pic related for example.

>>
>>68349363
You don't need to memorize even a fraction of that. You want to refer to a particular scale when writing a song you look it up. Even if you're playing in some ridiculous jazz group that likes to do improv solos in a million different keys you still just learn the stuff you need for that setlist. It's completely pointless to commit the entirety of music theory to memory.
>>
>>68349363
>>68349404
in case you didn't understand what i meant here, the scales are the same in every key except they're just moved up and down the fretboard. so G minor is the same exact scale as A minor, except it's 2 frets lower. the same for every scale, chord shape and arpeggio
>>
>>68349471

Thanks, that makes more sense. I've been looking around for a sort of recommended scale set to memorise but often the "essential scales" are only shown in one position. /gg/ should make a guide.

>>68349638

Thanks, funnily enough I was just about to ask about that. That makes things easier. There just needs to be a resource with the "essential" shapes but in full to be shifted up and down and practiced at will.

http://www.justinguitar.com/en/SC-000-Scales.php

this has all the common ones. follow his program though, don't just go arbitrarily picking out scales. if you're going to do that though i'd focus just on major and minor. you don't have to memorize a mode to be able to play in that mode

I'm trying to get an echoey sound like in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbvvMMIfzj0

is this a studio effect? or is he using a delay pedal?

also, is there any way that you can control feedback? I get get feedback loops easily, but nothing I do sounds like that grateful dead/alex harvey beep-y feedback, and It usually comes about by accident. while I can sorta find a way of creating it, I can't control it for shit. is that just the nature of feedback? or am I just doing it wrong?

my main method is hitting the neck back and forth with my thumb and fingers in a shakey motion, and cranking my fuzz pedal to the max. Harmonics are a good way of producing high tones as well.

Hi. 2006 Mexican Fender Jazz Bass, refinished in Shell Pink because Fender hates their best colors and only offers shitty ones.

2006 AVRI Jazzmaster w/ gold pickguard, I'm an ok guitar player now but I wouldn't want to be seen playing by a real guitar player because I'm not good at it at all, I just own it cause I love Jazzmasters and needed something to write songs on.

I also own a Squier Chris Aiken P-Bass, the neck on it is amazing but I never take pics of it cause the pickguard broke and I taped it up and littered it with anime stickers so it looks like shit now, I'm buying a new one for it soon, but I'll probably sell it cause I'm not a P-Bass guy at all.

"small hands" doesn't mean shit, that's a cop out.
>>
>>68354924

If it's Japanese check for the Crafted in Japan print and the serial number in the lower back of the neck, right on top of the body joint.

If it's American it has to have a letter + 6 number serial code in the back plate.

If it's Mexican the serial number will be on the back of the headstock.

If it's any of these, it's worth it.

If it's a Squier or a Modern Player (humbuckers instead of singles) avoid at all costs.

I know this is a guitar thread but I need some help here. I have a vox ac30cc2 and I think it's time to change the tubes, but I'm not really sure. My amp makes a hissing sound when I play any guitar and it seems to sound stronger when I play with a strat or tele. Also, even if I did end up needing new tubes, I have no clue on which tubes to get or where they would need to be placed in the amp. I know I probably sound retarded but I'm pretty new at the tube amp life. Any help would be appreciated.

have some emg sax's in my strat which i love, genuinely have the single coil sound/chime/sparkle to them. i believe they have an x series for humbuckers but idk if they even sound as good. 81/85 sound way too cold and the 60 sounds lifeless, if you're looking to play metal go for it, otherwise with what money you'd spend on the x series you'd be better off spending them on quality passive hb's, i'd only recommend their single coil stuff due to them being noiseless but still retaining great natural sounding tone

nah, there's way better pickups than the 81/85 or 60 for metal, my X2N equipped PoS sounds better than my friend's EMG meme machine, and I still have some interesting clean tones to go with it.
The only advantage they give is the slight compression on the 81 iirc, which I think is stupid since you're better off buying a compressor, which you can then turn on and off to suit your needs.

>i just think they look very cool
>and i'm really curious about that tremolo system

Anon that's no basis to buy a guitar, go play one before you do it.

The bridge is a piece of shit on most models, the tremolo will detune the cheaper ones real easy and sustain is non-existent in this guitar.

I own one and it's my favorite guitar ever made and I love Jazzmasters in general but they're by no means an easy guitar getting accustomed too and you don't wanna end up with a JM when your indie-dream guitar was a Tele or a Csaino like all the indie memers.

The classical guitar pieces written by composers are very hard yes and it takes a lot of practice to make them really work. But even then to untrained ears they don't sound all that much more impressive.

Give flamenco a shot. They have reoccurring themes and techniques which sound very impressive. Put together you can easily learn new song because they stay the same and you just add different chords and small plays.
I learned classical guitar for years until couldn't stand it anymore because I plateaued like fuck and then I just quit.
I picked up Flamenco last year and had a lot more fun again.

4 strings is too much

>>68347832
I don't know what but I like it

There's a nearly 6GB one in TPB, which happens to have Martinez, although it doesn't seem to be complete.

explain how without resorting to "b-but you can't hear him"
if you can't hear him he's either a shitty player, or you need to get an audio tech

Is it necessary to grow ones nails out for flamenco guitar?
Kinda stalling with my playing right now (electric guitar) and want to try something new for a while
>>
>>68363088
Yeah, you'll sound like shit if you don't use your nails.
>>
>>68363088
Have a nylon string, grow your nails out just a bit.
The shape matters a lot, they should be smooth a a stone in a creek bed with no sharp edges and beveled to the right.
Spend some time playing classical to devolop a neutral right hand technique.
There's a huge amount of carryover between classical guitar and flamenco given that they came from the same place.
Flamenco was just for the uneducated spanish peasants while classical was reserved for the upper-crust of Spain.
>>
>>68363088
I actually know a lot about this because I work at a nail salon. Your nails have to be a certain thickness and the edges need to be just the right radius for your picking to have rigid fluidity and tonal dynamics. Make sure you keep them too so as not to cause premature rusting on the strings. Nails collect a lot of dirt and skin oil! Only buy titanium nail clippers.
>>
>>68362702
really like it and not usually big on natural finishes.
>>
>>68346051
>is owning one going to make playing things written for 4 strings harder
if you ignore the bottom string, they're the same. Hell, think of the low B as a thumb rest and you have more consistency with your right hand as you move up the strings.

Newbie question:

Is the Peavey T-40 a good high-end starter bass or is it an over-hyped, overpriced meme?

And what's a good price to pay for one?
>>
>>68343716
I think your Chapman Stick has cancer or something.
>>
>>68363413
Do you get lots of classical guitar players customers in the nail salon? Just curious.

Any opinion on BC rich ones? I'm picking up one of those warlocks today because i like how it felt, also how they looks is a plus.

I have the Mockingbird One. It's basically a cheap ass black metal guitar.
>>
>>68363632
Who the hell told you that a T-40 could be a good idea for a starter bass? It's heavy as fuck, the neck is gigantic and the range is too limited.
>>
>>68364036
>Mockingbird
Thats depends of the class, theres a lot of high end warlocks and shit like the dignature line. Shame they dont even make high end stealth models anymore.
>>
>>68363632

They're like 600 bucks how are they overpriced.

They're good basses, but make sure to check out some videos or play one first before buying, they're not for everyone.
>>
Hey /gg/ could someone recommend me a practice amp. I live in a apartment so I have to watch the volume. Up to 400$ budget.
>>
>>68364166
I like the Peavey Vypyr stuff for a modeling/practice amp. Has a headphone jack/aux in, so you can play along to things without being loud.
>>
>>68364166
save some for headphones

I just picked up this one since i have a friend who has the same one and i liked how it feels and sound, also 7 strings.

>>68364398
You're going to regret it.

7 strings are shit. Buy a baritone guitar with a set of 70 - 13's.

Also people who buy signature guitars are destined to struggle to get attached to it personally.

Is it worth it?
i know very little about buying guitars but it seems like an ideal choice

Looks cool, i always liked warlocks design for some reasong despine i don't even play metal.

Have fun with that axe dude.
>>

It's just Squier, son. The cheapo brand not good enough to be called Fender.

Get something else for your first guitar or you'll most likely drop it within 6 months.
>>
Would you guys buy a POD X3 Live for $150 in good condition?

I'm looking at buying like 2 or 3 more pedals for my board, which is currently small, but im half tempted just to do an X3 instead.

I know a couple artists who make them sound really good and use them exclusively, I'd be stealing some patches from them for sure.

I'm on the fence.
>>
>>68364530
What do you recommend?
>>
>>68364512
There are many models, depends on how much are you willing to spend.
Classic vibes are pretty decent guitars IMO, I would recommend them to anyone who wants to start with guitar
>>
>>68364477
>7 strings are shit. Buy a baritone guitar with a set of 70 - 13's.
7 strings are great in the case you know how to play them. Considering it's a BC Rich it's very likely he won't be able to do so, but they offer a lot more advantage than a baritone, and once you get to 26.5" they feel nice.
>>
>>68364539
>Line 6
>>
>>68364556
I recommend that you go try various guitars from various makers at your local store before blindly buying something.

You can get far more for your money than Squier, personally I think they're really uncomfortable to play.
>>
>>68364563
>>68364601
ehh, i don't know. I'm looking for something that won't get out of tune easily and is durable.
>>
>>68364698
Then you sure as fuck shouldn't buy a Squier. Buy something with a fixed bridge if you have worries about tuning stability.
>>
>>68364698

This chick I work with gave me an SX PJ bass because her ex gave it to her and she never learned to play it. The finish on it looks really good and it doesn't sound half bad. Plays alright too. I would pay around $100-$150 for one. Definitely better than the squires I've owned.
>>
>>68364931
Never, ever buy a starter pack with guitar + amp. You'll get shit deal on both.

Don't buy shit blind just because you like the strat, that's what it looks like to me.

>>68364931

>>
>>68364105
I've seen a few on eBay for 500. Basically, all I've heard about them in the "cons" department is that they're big and heavy, and that honestly doesn't bother me. I just want an instrument with a nice, clean, top-level tone that I don't hate, that's also durable enough for slap, and they seem like a good (relatively) cheap alternative to a Fender American in that department.

I'm also gainfully employed, so $500 isn't too much to spend.

>>
>>68365029
Better than the Squier, solid beginner guitar. Humbucker in the bridge is a plus if you like playing with lots of gain.

I'd skip the tremolo altogether if I was in the market for tuning stability. Fixed bridge > all.
