Color theory is completely not needed, yes.

Knowing color theory does not matter at all when you create art from your own imagination and vision.

How do I into pickups? What's a good resource for learning more about them and how they work and what makes them unique?

i want to get 400$ out of it ( it retails for 600) but i also want it gone fast, what do you think the best way to go about selling this is and what do you think a fair price for it would be?
>>
>>68270855
Use Craigslist or a local classified ad source as a means of selling it, don't pawn it or settle for less than 350$. If I were you I'd polish it, restring it, give them whatever picks you have available and market it out as a "starter kit" could probably fork 500/550$ this way.

>>

Nothing but practice.
There are no shortcuts. You either practice them enough to develop the strength to play them, or you don't and your chords all sound like shit.
>>
>>68270754
Dang ol magnets man
>>
>>68272067
Any suggestions for songs to practice with lots of barre chords?
>>
>>68271976
Pick two chords and switch between them for 5 minutes each time you practice. One strum per chord to make sure each note is ringing cleanly.
I would begin in the middle of the neck (7th fret or so) because the string tension is less than first fret, and the frets are not to squished together like they are way up by the pickups. Slowly work up and down the fretboard over a couple weeks.

Make sure you're using good technique, good wrist position and guitar on the elevated left leg, classical style. Fingers pushing right next to the fret youre on.

Classical guitar repetoir can teach you all you need to know about barres.

Off the top of my head, a fun guitar song by City and Colour called In the Water I'm Beautiful has some good two string barres in it.

It goes without saying that your guitar should be setup at least moderately well...

GL m8, you'll get it with practice
>>
I use to take lessons, but then my instructor moved away. Now I'm just kind of aimlessly practicing with no direction. I don't really have an idea where to go from here. I've never been good at self instruction.
>>
>>68271008
That's a $1,000 fix. Repairing the headstock and filling your screw holes would be a tough job. Just throw it away tbqh man, no one in the world is gonna buy that shit.

How do I go about giving my jazz improv form?
I want to have my solos feel more like a coherent melody(there's not one to borrow from in this song) rather than a series of scales of varying speeds.

Key changes are alright.
For Example (each of these get one measure except for the last chord which gets two):
Fm7-Bbm7-D7-AbMaj7-DbMaj7-G7-CMaj7(x2)

How do I go about creating something that is more than scales?

why does everybody think barre chords are so hard?

if your guitar is setup properly with a good action height and good strings barre chords should be no problem
>>
>>68272923
>why do beginners* think barre chords are so hard?
Because it's a weird use of tension and muscles in your hands that have never been used like that before.
>>
>>68272923
Buzzing, proper technique, and stamina can all be issues when first starting.
There's only so much you can do to setup an acoustic guitar.
>>
>>68272923
Because if you remember back to when you started, it took you at least 6 months to a year to develop the finger strength to play them without issue.

Beginners also tend to have shit guitars with shit strings and shit setup.
>>
>>68272974
i think the hardest part is the coordination

if your guitar is setup properly i dont think it takes much extra strength. but maybe, i can't remember that well. my fingers were more sore from bends than barre chords.
>>
>>68273061
Flexibility and stamina were my worst issues. Cheap ass 80s plywood Korean Westone didn't help.
>>
>>68273148
aha yeah my buddy has this cheapass epiphone acoustic, i cant even barre on it the action is a mile high and the factory strings (he hasnt changed them yet lol) are stiff as fugg.

I don't want to be that guy, but I asked in the last thread and didn't get an answer.
The middle 4 strings on my guitar buzz/are flat against the frets when playing from the 20th to the 23rd fret and they'd need a significantly higher action to be playable clean.
Knowing that it basically HAS to be the 24th fret that is a bit too large, right? Could I get away with just getting that 1 fret filed down a bit? Could I do it myself?

>>
>>68274605
The truss rod doesn't do much there, it's exactly at the neck heel, 23rd fret. That's screwed into place
>>
>>68274006
is there a demo of this?
>>
>>68274628
It can be other things. Could be the neck angle, and you would have to shim the neck, provided the frets are already level, and you can check that with a straight edge. Is the fret seated properly? Sometimes a tap of a hammer can do wonders. What kind of bridge? Is it radius compensated? And how much is too much on the action, and pics.
>>
>>68274628
if the neck is "dipped" too much, fixing this will cause the action to go down so you'll need to raise the saddles at the bridge, increasing the angle between the neck and the strings when playing on the higher frets

A#, F, C, G min, A#

Play with barre shapes and add an F to the C (a shape barre) on the B string just before flipping to G min.

Play around until you figure out how many strings are played with, it's simply A shape barre chords up the neck with a G min.

I've been practicing the blues minor scale for a while now. I can do it in all positions in G and a few tricks like skipping strings or going in thirds, but that's it.
Like, if I try to play it in A instead I'll get lost, if I try to improvise upon it I'll forget what notes I can go to from the one I started, especially in the horizontal direction. What can I do to get better at that and be effectively able to use the scale for actual music?

Mine's kinda setup like shit and I never struggled with them. But I didn't think about trying them out before at least 6-10 months after beginning because I was too busy playing stupid, simple death/thrash metal; so they never felt any awkward.

>>68276206
Practice your scales musically, on a metronome, instead of practicing them octave to octave. Don't learn pre-made licks even if they're yours, you'll turn into a lazy and predictable guitarist.
>>
>>68276236
You're out of your mind. That's a horrendous break and a profoundly shitty repair.

>Are you just focusing on what note you're playing or something?
I'm not sure what you mean by this, but possibly, since I can't see the rest of the pattern.

>Shapes don't fucking change across the fretboard apart from the b string.
I know, and it's why it frustrates me so much. The whole thing is quite symmetric and logical, but I can't seem to get it into my muscle memory I can barely only work in one key.

>>68276330
>Practice your scales musically
How?
>on a metronome
I do that sometimes, should really do it more often though.

>Don't learn pre-made licks even if they're yours, you'll turn into a lazy and predictable guitarist.
Oh well, I never felt so happy for having studied so few licks then.
>>
>>68276401
>I'm not sure what you mean by this, but possibly, since I can't see the rest of the pattern.

Here's what I do when practicing scales. I'll put on some shit anime or whatever and sit with my guitar in my lap not plugged in. I'll do scale shapes up and down while disconnecting my brain from it, then change root note and continue and so on and so forth.

The best way for me to get the old muscle memory to play along is to not focus on it. Once you have the scales down to muscle memory is when you start playing around with them.

Also a really good way of practicing alternate picking at the same time.
>>
>>68270950
Look man, the neck has no value now. Take off the tuners, remove the neck, and throw it away. You can probably still get a decent price for the body and tuners.
>>
What are the best all around bass strings from your experience? I play funk, rock, and metal. But i do like to try other genres. I am currently using some old d'addarios 45-105.

>>
>>68276206
you have to keep practicing it until you don't have to think about where your fingers need to go

there's no real trick to it other than grinding away at them. i like to practice scales and stuff like that while i'm watching tv, because it just gets fucking boring. i think it's useful though, if you can grind out scales left and right without thinking too much about them because your focus and attention is directed towards what's going on in the tv show/movie, then you're on the right track, because it's just a part of you at that point and you don't have to think about it.

sounds stupid but it's helped me.

Gibsons have set necks, they would have to unglue it which is a pain in the dick, and getting finished, proper Gibson replacements for them isn't all too common.

The intonation is probably off, and I wouldn't be surprised if it couldn't hold tune. Plus pressure will probably make the screws damage more wood around the neck until they give.

It has to be glued and bonded with graphite.

Funny thing is that I began studying the major/minor scale patterns recently and I have way less trouble doing them across the neck. Maybe it's because this time I set to learn each pattern regardless of key rather than learning them all in one key and then trying to shift around.

i just don't see the point in intensely focused practice sessions for scales after a certain point. in the beginning, sure, i need to focus and pay attention just to understand the notes, intervals, and positions, but once i get that down it's just a matter of drilling away at them until my fingers know where to go. i don't need to sit in silence for that because it's not that complicated

>how to practice scales musically

Couple things. Mix up the rhythm; so tap out a beat that sounds interesting to you then try to play the scale to it. Play scale to a swing beat. Mix in triplets. Mix in slides and hammer on/pull offs. Play the scale to a drum beat off youtube.

Also look up the basic fundamentals of walking bass lines. Walking bass lines are great for guitar practice as well (transpose up an octave of course). Experiment with note order. I drives me crazy seeing people practicing scales by jusy doing them in ascending and descending order. Start in the middle, hop around by thirds or fifths, play in pseudo-random order and you get a feel for how those notes can sound in sequence, both in good and bad ways.
>>
>>68277399
If you can't even change the root note of a scale without fumbling, that's not good advice. Mindless grind until that shit is fixed.
>>
>>68277399
Ah yes, I do some of that. Varying rhythm is something I should try more, in particular, because I absolutely suck at rhythm, thanks.

>>68277439
You do have a point, but I did also ask how to get better at actually putting scales into use besides ascending/descending and simple tricks, and his post addresses that.
>>
>>68277439
Oh, break out the pencil and paper if it's a memory thing. Say you want to practice X scale with a,b,c root notes; write out the whole thing and drill it. There are no points for how fast you can commit this stuff to memory. Work it out by hand on paper, practice, back to paper for different arrangement, practice. It won't be second nature right away and it doesn't have to be. Time and repetition solves that eventually.
>>
>>68277231
Jesus, stop calling it the "top." Its the headstock. That guitar is fucked, and just blasting some screws through a major break like that isn't really considered a "repair," even if you skeeted some CA glue in first.

The value of mass produced objects for sale is determined in part by their condition. You took a badly damaged guitar and made it worse by doing incredibly poor "repair" work. It doesn't matter if the rest of the Les Paul is in nice shape, its still going to be hard to sell.

So I have been looking for some Tone City pedals but it looks like the only dealer in the US is Riff City... who I've literally never heard of until I started searching for Tone City.

But I also noticed when I search for that, I see a lot of results for 'Donner' pedals. They seem to be new and upcoming, has anyone tried them?

Tone City sells for like $40/pedal in the UK but $70+ here in the US... Donner is about $20-40/pedal in the US.

Closed position chords.
Without that Major third interval it becomes more difficult to play them spanning across two octaves in any position(the second octave wouldn't truly be closed position, but nearly)

Both of these chords are in root position.

First song I learned was House of the Rising Sun.

Yeah, I was limited to very simple song books back in those days. Still teaches you a couple of chord shapes.
>>

How do you usually play these? The only close position barre I can think of is C-shape, which is doable in fourths.
>>
>>68278478
My first real song was Purple Haze
>>
>>68278478
Like a Stone by Audioslave is the first I could play from back to back. The chords in the chorus will give you trouble, but the sooner you learn to deal with bar chords the better, so just take it like a man.
>>
>>68278626

Wouldn't you have more trouble with the solo if you don't own a Whammy pedal?
>>
>>68278653
I'd just play the solo without the whammy or using a pitch shift VST. Sure, you lose expressiveness(which you can sort of work around if your guitar has a tremolo bridge), but it's still very doable. Other than that it's a really easy solo.

Well, from the 1st chord of each 4 bars, theres an Ab note in each chord (Fm7 and DbMaj7).

If I were soloing over that, I'd think about all the ways I could link the two.
-I could make ascending arches
-Descending arches
-jumble a cluster of 3 notes or so to form some kind of coherent melody
-do some chord stabby thing with common tone Ab

Really its about seeing chord tones, picking a start and an end, and recognizing a path that sounds good. Often its told that 3rd and 7th note of the chords are the money tones, and the 1st and the 5th are the safe tones.

>>
>>68280652
Gotcha, yeah, the first 5 chords are in Ab Major/F minor and the last 2 are in C Major/A Minor.
The reason I like to include the minors is because it give us an optional leading tone(Harmonic minor) to choose from.
Sometimes we can utilize the minor pentatonic built upon the tonic of a major key which gives access to a flat 3rd and flat 7th, because for some reason in blues the minor second dissonance doesn't make us cringe.
I'll see what I can do, making improv more melodious was my biggest enemy here. Thanks for the advice.

If you are satisfied with the tone you get from fingers there is no reason. This usually goes the other way around for newbies; they become reliant on the pick and are totally lost without one.

One thing you can try if you want the sharper attack a pick provides is to try finger picks. They slip on to the ends of your thumb, index, middle and ring fingers. Popular with banjo pluckers. A lot of people try them once and throw them away instantly because they feel awkward. They have potential though, given practice.

You know Do re me fa so la ti? Always remember where your Do's and So's, anon. Your root note. Your Tonic and Dominant. 1st and 5th. Do and So.

If you don't know where you're Do is, youre lost.

In this case your Do is G. Always be consious of where you can land on a G if you start to get lost.

Because guitar salesmen are failed musicians mostly.
>>
>>68271008
lol

probably worth about $400 like that

a luthier will have to do a shitload of work to replace the damage caused by putting screws into it, usually a break isn't too bad but those screws have made it 5x worse

probably cost about $500 to fix and not many people are going to drop more than $900 on a previously fucked les paul

>>
>>68281002
yeah andy is cool
I like john bolinger cuz hes so goofy and happy all the time

paul from guitar world sucks
phil x is the most annoying fag ever

knobs and dennis keyser make cool vids but their playing style is so unique they manage to make every pedal they demonstrate sound the same and I can never really tell what the pedal sounds like

that russian guy that demos every pedal ever made is pretty good too

mike hermans is too neat and perfect in his playing and it sounds weird

that burger guy from austrailia is annoying too and like an aussie paul from guitar world with dumb van halen garbage licks

No, PRS is the Apple of guitar brands. Complete with a Steve Jobs style Boomer guru at the top.

I own PRS and Fender. I will own a Gibson acoustic one day, an original 50's passed down from my grandfather... but I will never own a current day Gibson guitar unless it is given to me.

probably

they have very good quality from one to another, sound very good, play excellently but they are about as dorky as you can get because theres never been any popular hipsters to use them

they were used by blooze farts and numetal fags in their heyday

If a fedora is something that guys who claim to know a lot about women but actually know nothing wear... then I'd say the fedora of guitar brands is probably something either more obscure or something tacky. Like Carvin.

No, PRS is more the Ferrari of guitar brands. Most of their stuff is completely over the top and many people cannot afford them. They are excellent in quality and highly regarded by many critics, but you're likely to upset a few peasants if you own one.

you don't have to stop playing with your fingers, but you should learn how to use a pick at some point. You'll come to appreciate the articulation, efficiency, and sound a pick gives you in many situations.
