The increasing problem for most guitarists nowadays is indecisiveness. People don't know which guitar or bass they want so they start trying to ask people on /mu/ for money and shit. It's pretty stupid. I payed like $1400 for a Fender last night and it was very much worth it. If you think you can go on /mu/ and try and blow peoples cocks for money for your stupid ass guitar then you must be completely retarded. You are the only person that does that, Montie. I know it's montie I see him in these generals from time to time. Make sure to block his trip
>>
>>68250449
I've been playing guitar for 10 years. I started when I was a freshman in high school. My favorite guitar is undecided thus far. I like my Jackson. I think all nice guitars are nice guitars, I just prefer the wide but thin necks with 24 frets and either EMG humbuckers or Seymore Duncan single coils. Stratocaster shaped bodies are nice. I like Taylor acoustic guitars.

My favorite guitarist right now is Takayoshi Ohmura. I like his YouTube videos and he does some cool stuff with Babymetal. Aside from him, I like Buckethead and Jimi Hendrix. I really dig John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck and dixieland style jazz, like what you hear walking around at Disneyland. I also like a lot of classical era pianists.

I have an electronic project called Totally Tubular. I just posted this video. It would be cool if you gave it a like and a positive comment. Nobody wants to practice all day just to hear a bunch of hurtful comments on the internet when theyre trying to get noticed.

You can get mounted pickups that do not require holes to be drilled and just sit in your soundhole
>>
>>68250936
I've used it, and enjoyed it, but now I'm moving away from it. I've put in about 300 hours on the software and have learned a lot from it. Provided you use the custom site to download dlc, there's a lot that can be installed and learned.
If I can ever suggest one thing from this program, it's to focus not on playing the song, but learning it from the perspective of the person who wrote it. I have spent hours playing one song trying to figure out what motions were coming to their mind while developing the riff. The lessons and guitarcade parts are interesting, but take too long to load.
also:
1. turn off venue mode, it kills the sound of the song you're playing.
2. you can amplify what instruments can be heard through the speaker.
3. the rocksmith plug should be able to plug into your amp. I use mine on -15db while using the 0db to hear what I'm playing. So now you can play from your pc/console while also playing from your amp.
>>
>>68250936
>i find it difficult to play the songs without the backing track/rocksmith on in the background

>>

How is it a waste of money if you like it that much?
>>
>>68252576
Some are. Pretty much anything you can't build by hand is worth something if you find a use for it.

Digital processing has put them out of favor in recording, though. Still useful

Is it normal for me to tear open my calluses? Am I playing too much?

I've been playing for a year (I currently play in D with .11-50s) and every month or so my fingers will get rekt and the entire callus comes off. I don't play after I shower or anything either.

Get used to it. Your fingers are always going to have a dull, throbbing pain at the tips after long periods of playing. You'll barely notice it after a while.
>>
>>68252576
Put a modulated tape delay in front of that thing and it'll sound fucking gorgeous.

Having pedals really depends on how you plan on using them or what genre you play.

Generally speaking, most guitarists have an overdrive/distortion, delay, and at least one type of modulation.

If you're a traditional rock/metal guy, that may be all you want to use.

If you're into shoegaze, ambient, etc, you'll probably want to get yourself a couple of delays and reverbs as well as a fuzz box if you want that really washy/spaceous sound. Get a looper if you want to add layers.

Pedals aren't necessarily essential, but if you learn how to do certain things with different kinds, you can really expand your sound.

You'll like it, if you own a non offset like a Strat/Tele then you'll be fine. It's a perfect guitar to learn to upgrade too. You'll definetly want to change the poor stock pickups too but any Strat pickup fits and works well just pay attention to the phase switches when rewiring. Check eBay I got mine with a hotrail for $220 on there due to auction but I know there's an Olympic white one on reverb now for $270. The neck is a bit thick and glossy but it's not bad at all, the rosewood is holding up well especially since I oil it everytime I change strings.
Here's the reverb one

On the last 2 or 3 frets my strings are basically flat on the frets. Meaning they just slap against them and can't be played. Do I absolutely need to raise the action? Is it a neck issue (I have minimal neck relief, less than a credit card thick) or is it the last few frets that need levelling? I'm just confused because those last few frets are literally on the neck pocket thing on the neck, so I'm not sure if adjusting neck relief will actually do something.
Google is telling me that it's probably the 24th fret that is a bit too high? Could I just get the last few frets levelled on the cheap or will I need to do a complete fret dressing?

Nobody wants to play bass, they pick it up out of necessity because either they're the worst guitar player in a band without one, or they can't be arsed finding a failed guitar player for their own recording work.
>>
>>68254819
i can guarantee it helps a lot and its free, but you have limited lesson time , 30 minutes a day or so
>>
>>68255176
Not true at all. I'm a dedicated bassist, the reason for my decision to dedicate all my time and effort to it is because the entire creative capacity of any musical work lies on foundational instrumentation. It's the difference between Iron Maiden and Avenged Sevenfold - sure you can have a shithot lead guitarist, but if your bassist can only play open E the entire fucking song, it really limits what you can do.

Owner here. It's a custom partscaster project started by a guy in Vancouver that makes bolt-on B-bender systems, company is called Van Rosa Innovations, I think he sells them for around $250 CAD. He built this guitar very cheaply (basically a countertop with a Squier neck) to test his B-bender product with the brass barrel style saddles. I'm the 3rd owner and I've done a few mods to it (staining the wood, changing out the saddles), but it's still far from an enjoyable instrument. It desperately needs new pickups, these old Teisco single coils have gone very microphonic. It could also really use a nice neck. As of today I keep it around more as a novelty than anything but the bolt on B-bender system is actually fantastic and works really well. I may eventually turn this one into a decent guitar or I might just pull off the bender system and put it on something else.

I'm considering a design like pic related (crappy paint thing but it gets the idea across). Half is 2 tiered and half is flat. Left side for 'normal' sized pedals, the right is for volume/wah/tuner.

power supply would be mounted under the second tier shelf.

What think?

Buying a guitar with knowledge and intention to "fix" it is pretty ahem "cuck" in and out of itself. Your guitar should be great as is when you buy it after just a set-up.

I still think it's unfortunate the bad rep and overhype Fender offsets have been getting recently.

>people believe wood affects the tone of a none acoustic instrument, that it somehow affects the way the magnets vibrate and transform energy into an electric signal

If it's difficult to tell the difference between Cedar and Spruce tops of classicals made by the same Luthier(the back an sides make little to no difference Torres himself set out to prove that and did so), why on earth do you think you can hear something that's not there through a thick coat of lacquer?

You're hearing with your eyes, McGurk effect in action.
>>
>>68260121
No; it doesn't appear to have a truss rod. Truss rods are a godsend for vintage guitars.
>>
>>68260828

Plus, you know, the amp makes a dickload of difference too.
>>
>>68260828
This. But I think the current argument is that the body wood acts as a filter and resonates with different frequencies which are then sent back into the strings and change how they vibrate, which is then picked up by the pickups.
Just thought I'd keep you updated on the latest pseudo science.
>>
>>68260828
The bridge of a fully-electric guitar is still connected to the body, so it's actually transferring energy to the wood, which dissipates it more readily in some frequencies than others.
Now, of course the effect is pretty negligible and only the highly-functioning autist(or barely-functioning /mu/tard) crowd would care much about it, but it's there and it's detectable. There's a couple of studies on that on the internet IIRC.
>>
>>68253167

Agreed. Important pedals to have:

>EQ
>some type of fuzz or distortion if you don't like the distortion your amp has
>compressor if you play bass (just learn when is tasteful to use it and when not)
>reverb if you don't like your amp's

optional but useful in lots of cases:
>delay
>chorus or maybe phaser

All the other stuff is more if you really think you need to have it for making funny noises.

I have an Ibanez RGA with DiMarzio pickups that were made specifically for the guitar and they're fine. But I've just always had a certain sound I've liked and wanted to get from a guitar.
Pls no bully, but I really like the sound Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold has with his guitars, that really "whiny" sounding lead that he has. I've always wanted to have it in my guitars. I'm not even a fan of them, I just love his guitar tone.
He uses Seymour Duncan Invaders. Are their any other pickups that can give a similar sound and does anyone have experience with the Invader?

lol,it's more like just feeling or believing rather than functional uasges for most players. But good producers seldom pick woods with bad quality.So-called good tonewood are something good producers give you in order to charge you more.
>>
>>68261174
I'm gonna say:

fingers > amp > pickups > nut > wood > bridge > strings
>>
>>68261014
EQ setting from your amps and tone setting on your guitar and other pedals are enough in most situations. You don't need an extra EQ pedal.
>>
>>68261420
>But good producers seldom pick woods with bad quality.So-called good tonewood are something good producers give you in order to charge you more.
All "tonewoods" happen to be cheap, readily available, have great milling properties and are easy on the tools. Seems like an incredible coincidence that it's exactly these woods that also produce the best sound.
>>
Any tips for getting better playing through an amp? I'm used to playing electric without one (annoying neighbours) and in practices I ring out the non-fretted strings constantly. I bought headphones and started practising through the amp with those at home, is it just a matter of time and effort or are there techniques I've skipped learning because I haven't used an amp much?
>>
>>68261596
Learn every muting technique possible. Check out Ben Eller's stuff on that, it's great. Look into the lessons why your power chords suck. Most of that can be used in any other context also.
>>
>>68261596
>>68261629

Yeah i ran in to troubles a while back for the same reason. Always practiced unplugged and when i went to play on the amp all of the random harmonics and open string ringing I hadn't noticed in practice would come out.

Always good to practice with headphones in amp for this reason.
>>
>>68261596
Honestly, the only real answer is practice. Playing with an amp and distortion to the point where open strings don't ring is just something you get better at after a while. I was terrible the first few months I played with an amp. You just have to consciously try and mute the other strings and get better and better over time.

>>
>>68260828
Not quite. I'm a physics major though so I can enlighten you.

Different densities in wood affect how much string vibration energy is lost when you pluck a string. A higher density wood will reject the string energy transfer into the body (this is called internal stress) and thus the string will vibrate longer. With that being said keep in mind two pieces of wood from the same tree would probably sound different due to slight differences in density. It would be very hard to attribute a sound to a certain species of wood.

Also keep in mind a higher density neck will resist the physical pull of the strings and thus stay in tune better. This can also be achieved with multi-piece lamination's which is common on 8 string necks for example.

When a manufacturer uses the misleading term "tone wood" they're really referencing a word that a luthier would use to describe a piece of wood that rings out a specific note when tapped. A piece of wood like this would usually be used for an acoustic rather than an electric guitar though.

Is the wood that your electric guitar is made of as important as your amp, pickups, etc.? Obviously not, but the idea that the wood used in an electric guitar has no effect on it's overall sound is wrong.
>>
>>68262823
lol no your not a physics major you fucking poser lyer wood doesnt do nothing for sound
>>
>>68263165
You'd be right if an electric guitars overall sound didn't have anything at all to do with how long it sustains notes or how well it stayed in tune.

Unfortunately though both those things are crucial to an electric guitars overall sound. Sorry.

>>68262823
I hate to admit that this is correct. Acoustically there's a few more factors than density, and working backwards from some of those test results we can see that there are some woods with equal density which will have different damping coefficients, but I always tell consumers to go by weight. It's the largest contributing factor and pretty much the only one you can measure on your own.

The fact that higher order harmonics are more easily lost than lower harmonics, and that mahogany has a reputation for warmth despite this fact, should be enough to explain that although wood does affect tone, virtually every piece of marketing and conventional wisdom on this subject it wrong.

http://www.scielo.cl/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0718-221X2015000400011
(The authors of this article have another similar and great study I couldn't find)

The only factor I can pick up by ear is between two guitars of drastically different weight with all other factors equal. The audible difference I hear in such an example is that chords, particularly more dissonant chords, tend to resolve to harmonically related overtones sooner on a lighter instrument than a heavier one. This is audible as the characteristic warbling of nearby frequencies lasting for a significantly longer period of time on the heavier instrument. Personally despite hearing this difference I have not been able to notice a difference in sustain of chords. While in theory single notes should definitely sustain longer on a heavier instrument I haven't found a good audio example to see if this goes beyond a mere measurable difference to an audibly noticeable difference.

If you have an all solid vs an all laminate electric you will hear the difference.

Can I ask for some advice as a newfriend?

I'm trying to get some people together at my University to just practice jamming, and who knows make a small group. I've met two pianists and three guitarists, what can I do with this?

I'm thinking bring the group together and play a backtrack through a small speaker and just jam out. One of the guitarists is a girl who is just interested in me but I offered to teach her what little I know in the forms of single note soloing and scales.

Any recommendations for songs, scales I can teach the other guitarists (besides Am Pentatonic, D Maj. E Maj, and Em), would be truly appreciated.

Currently in the process of ordering a soldering iron to fix my first electric.

>>68263368
There are a lot of factors that play into the way an electric guitar sounds for sure. Even something like saddle material (steel, brass, etc.) plays a part in the overall sound.

You can take two of the exact same model electric guitars and one might have the "mojo" while the other doesn't. That's just the reality, a really good sounding electric guitar is only rare because of the variances in the sum of it's parts.

I'm would never say that wood plays the most important part in the sound of an electric guitar, I just take issue with anybody claiming it plays no part at all.

The wood used to construct an electric guitar will effect the overall sound of the instrument. Period.

And you claiming someone can't really tell the tonal differences between two identical guitars and they're just "hearing with their eyes" is also wrong. The variations in pot values alone are enough to change an electric guitars overall sound. Never mind all the other variables like pickup height, pickup output, etc. I'd invite anybody to go to their local Guitar Center and A/B two of the same guitars to easily disprove what you're calming.

Some lyrics need to be heard within the context of the song.

Just look how this lyrics look like with no context, for example:

Everything, everything, everything, everything..
In its right place
In its right place
In its right place
Right place

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

Everything, everything, everything..
In its right place
In its right place
Right place

There are two colours in my head
There are two colours in my head

What was that you tried to say?
Tried to say.. tried to say..
Tried to say.. tried to say..

I'm perfectly aware of you obviously have no understanding of either one of those terms and tried to erroneously use them in defense of your first claim which was:
>people believe wood affects the tone of a none acoustic instrument
After which I provided you with clear scientific explanations as to why and how wood affects the tone of an electric guitar. Then instead of challenging the facts I provided with an actual argument you chose to throw out "Just Noticeable Difference" which wouldn't refute or apply to anything I stated.

Here's a link so you can clarify for yourself what the term actually means for future reference.

More to the point was that any tone changes coming from a body of different woods is well below the threshold of anyone actually noticing. Stimuli(sound in this case) from a mahogany and a basswood body in a double blind test would sound the same because the minutia of the tonal difference is such that the human ear can not percieve the difference.
If I told you that Mahogany has a bright sound your mind would start to look for that quality anytime you played a mahogany guitar. You hear with your eyes.
What difference you are hearing between identical guitars(pickups, electronics, strings, setups etc) with different body materials is entirely fabricated and based on heresay.

The first rule of punk music is that you have to forget about the whole idea of being a good guitar player. No punk band has ever even been music literate to my knowledge your best tool would be to pick up a guitar and sit down with it for 5-8 hours a day trying to play a song only listening to it, once you get a feel for replication and standard chord progression by repetition, you'll be halfway to making your own stuff.

It matters EVEN MORE. You don't need to pay attention to color theory when doing observational work because the shit's all right there in front of you, but even there you can do some simple shit to improve observation work.
>Did you really never watch bob ross lessons
Yeah, he uses color theory a lot and does some stealth teaching by talking about what colors you should use when. His paintings work BECAUSE he's got a strong grasp of color theory - and almost nothing else, I might add - he's really bad at perspective and even his trees have, for lack of a better word, poor anatomy. His strongest ability is being really fucking good at color and pushing paint around in effective ways, and he chooses subjects that let him play to his strengths. It's why you don't see him painting fucking portraits.

If he was a more well rounded artist he could have painted anything.

And it's the same in music you stupid bitch. The only thing you do by not learning is limit yourself.
