~ CHALLENGE #4 : WORST or BEST Original Character! ~

- Draw either the WORST or BEST OC you can possibly think of. Do your best to be creative; anyone can make a black and red pony.
- You WILL need a tripcode OR a name! Otherwise you won't be able to prove your pony is yours.
- If you are found to steal or in any way plagiarizer you are obviously cut from the competition. If you cheat and re-enter I can't really do anything but I'd hope you guys would be honest as I hope I can trust y'all.
- If you'd like a bit of a challenge, I'll post one of the palettes and you can use it or not.
- You may enter up to 3 OCs
- Your OC is limited to any kind of sentiant being such as - pony (mare, stallion, filly, foal, baby, alicorn, earth, pegasus, unicorn and any other kind of pony I forgot), dragon, griffon, donkeys, breezies, changelings, and any other sapient beings. So no bunnies for example, but dragons are fine.
- The winner will be chosen through a poll! So I'm not voting on my own; we all are.
- AND Whomever wins will get a real prize (and it's not some shitty request!)

~The Voting will begin Tuesday, March 14. The winner will be announced Saturday, March 18!.~

(Pic related is one of the palettes that I saturated a bit and changed the hues a little. It's NOT necessary, it's just for people that need an idea.)

If you have any other questions let me know~

I could really use a shit ton of help. I'm trying my best to follow the instructions, but it seems like my ponies always turn out like deformed potatoes with wrong proportions. You can't even tell if it's a stallion or a mare, or what animal in general.

I can't even draw circles which look like circles and I've been practicing since days to draw them.

I'll get to the colouring and outlining when I can finally sketch ponies which look like ponies.

Every little bit of help is appreciated, thank you.

Is this the basic idea of drawing the head at a cocked angle and any mistakes to fix? Like I said I'm new and don't know much about drawing. I get the purpose of the cross in a circle for head but just out of curiosity what do they call the cross. I know I probably sound dumb btw.

no I mean out of all the more or less decent resources the comparative leg anatomy shit is shitty and wrong, and this has been pointed out multiple times before so why is it still there

Okay, well, I (and a lot of people here) agree that the leg anatomy is good or at least good enough for a cartoon pony. Look, I don't like to be mean, but as a wise man once said, "If you don't love it, you can shove it."

ok so the cross goes like this:
- vertical from the highest point of the skull to the middle of the nose, between the nostrils
- horizontal from eye to eye or brow to brow

do note that G4 ponies have such curved faces that it's probably easier to draw the vertical as flowing along the midline of the face instead

>>29650158
your album already has a few good and great leg anatomy things, the shit one has no reason to be there expect misplaced nostalgia

>>
>>29650448

>>
>>29650293
The cross doesn't need to be anything really. It's just a guideline, so use it however you want as long as it helps you. I like to split the head into quadrants, while others like to put things lower or higher. Proceed to shit all over my face if you disagree though.
>>
>>29650535
I'm personally in the habit of using the brow ridges as the horizontal checkpoint because I drew a lot of horses before venturing into MLP and the brow is the widest part in a horse's head. Getting the length and width as well as the forehead-nose ratio figured out before bothering with details is good.

For pony heads the cross is most useful for perspective methinks, and keeping features symmetrical.
>>
>>29650535
I always draw myself guidlines and mess around anyway. But still they help me to place things. And if something is off I fix it. that is why I don't draw on paper too much. I really like to ship my Shift with Z. This is the best shipping.

This plus you gave the arms and legs as many joints as you wanted. There are not 6 joints in a pony leg. The bent arm is also wrong because the first bend should be bent the other way before it's bent down like that.Make sure you're actually paying attention to tutorials and not just making up your own thing

drawing on a tablet is difficult for me. How does this look? This is my OC, which looks a lot like babs I guess but I was thinking of android 18 when drawing the mane. The colors are from a random palette, since i never had it colored until now. I might keep these colors though. I kinda like it.

I can understand that this may not be the best place for me to post, but I am still learning how to draw ponies at the moment. Besides, I'd rather not create and maintain a Tumblr account that I won't use much, and would prefer to stay somewhat-anonymous. I checked the catalog - THANKS, >>29656943# - and the only threads that are solely for drawings are this and the thread that's just full of requests. Perhaps someone should make an "Original Art Thread" for others to post their own art.

Also, I don't mind getting my ass kicked, or being criticised, but I will stop posting if that's what everyone wants.
>>
>>29657525
No one here want anyone to stop. We want everyone to keep going.
Instead of posting old drawing that lead to nowhere post what you did recently. That way we can help you.

By the way. I've just spent 3 hours drawing pair of hind legs and I am still not happy with them. Life is hard.
>>
>>29657525
you dense fuck that IS the "original art thread"
go post there
drawing requests is purely optional
altho if you do a request or two they'll kiss your ass raw

also it's not like we don't want you here, we're just trying to keep the thread on topic
you want /ic/? sure
redlines? comin' right up
some tricky aspect explained? we'll try
don't know what to try and improve on? we got notes
but don't show us everything you draw ok
>>
>>29657578
Old drawings? The one last one I posted was only two days old, and I had drawn it with the intention of uploading here. The same one goes for the previous drawing, which was made the same day it was uploaded. I would never upload something old, or else I would have 'improved' from then.

I don't want to start an argument or be stubborn, but I'm just making a point.
>>
>>29657629
I don't know whether to feel insulted or very thankful.

It's still mostly requests, but I see that, now that it's updated, people will post drawings there from time to time.

I take it that I should upload drawings that I didn't already post here. Bye!
>>
>>29657629
Also, I would be interested in knowing what to do next to improve. I tried some different angles and leg positions (on the other Draw Thread, you're welcome) but I just went back to side views because it was time consuming, hard, and didn't turn out the way I planned it to.

Also, what are redlines? Are they just how-to-draws?
>>
>>29657637
Oh I missunderstood the whole thing. My fault.
>>
>>29657804
Redlines are your drawings with stuff fixed in them by a more skilled drawfag. Usually with a red line! So if perhaps your face is wrong, someone can redline a correct face into your work to show you which lines need to change and how.

>RED
Outlines should be thicker than detailing lines. This makes it easier to tell objects from each other.

>ORANGE
Remember to taper your acute angles.

>YELLOW
Major facial features need to be in line bold enough to be readable. If your outlines are much thicker than the facial feature lines, the mouth and nostrils will look like ballpoint doodles on a featureless face, not like body parts.

>LIME
Make hair wisps large enough that they don't get mistaken for irregularities in the line. Try to make them flow according to the main flow of the hair so they don't jut out randomly like thorns.

>AZURE
Line thickness should be consistent within the same object and nearby objects within a shared general area.

>CORNFLOWER & PURPLE
Try to avoid wobbly lines on objects that aren't meant to look lumpy, they look unintentional. Either maker it wavy, unwobble it (cornflower), or figure out something to redeem the line's shape (purple).

>LILAC
Rule of thumb: thicker lines are closer, thinner lines are farther. This is an effect that can really bring lineart alive, but it needs to be consistent.

Objects that aren't in the foreground should not have foreground line thickness. Objects inhabiting the same plane should have a consistent line weight, or the thinner -lined parts will look like they're skewing away in a distorted perspective.

>PINK
Observe the amazing power of little black thickenings(TM) in corners--these serve to hint at shapes and depth differences and help in creating the illusion of 3D even if you never add actual shading to the work.
>>
>>29661804

>AMBER
1. Eyes should not lose in (outer) line thickness to anything in the same plane. Humans have a psychological compulsion to locate a character's eyes, and the effect of thinner lines "hiding" the eyes amidst bolder lines is a bit creepy.

2. Remember to draw in some detail lines to denote creases wherever fabric or similar material is bunched up or pulled or whatever. Don't overdo it, a little detail goes a long way.

>LIGHT BLUE
Watch out for line conlicts like these--they create false impressions--here the ear (?) looks like it's a part of the bunny ruffle thing. Try to move the elements slightly for a clear overlap perspective to keep them visually separated.

I haven't done any turn-arounds mostly because I'm almost constantly fiddling with proportions of the eyes and muzzle and general headshape. I don't really like the forehead in that particular fluttershy so it's something I'm still messing around with.
>>
>>29666492
Yeah, not like there've been huge episodes about cutie marks or something

Might be irrelevant to the craftsmanship of anatomy/value/color/line weight/etc, but they're pretty closely linked to the character's identity.

Sketch your ideas the best way you can and add notes about details that you can't draw yet. Write down descriptions.
You can draw those things later, when you'll git gud.

Good ideas are too precious to waste them, to just ignore them like that.

It does need to calm down for different reasons. Make an inspiration chart and strive for that with everything you do whether it takes a few hours, weeks, maybe even a few months on one piece. You need to practice making better art by making better art. You don't even need to master fundamentals to make a solid composition. So keep sketching ideas too.

That is what I am trying to do. And I try to not care about time it takes me but sometimes when I look at people doing stuff in minutes I get a little frustrated. But I also remember they- most likely- do that longer then me.
But still it is painfull when you have an idea and just can't bring it to life.
>>
>>29668636
People can only do that kind of stuff in a few minutes because they made making good work a habit. Just learn to enjoy the process itself and you'll eventually get faster.
>>
Seems like I'll be able to get something done again sooner than I expected. Managed to get my head cleared up a bit so I can finally draw again without having to worry about other shit, really looking forward to it.

I know that feeling all to well, I've got a text file in my art folder where I write down any Ideas that come to my mind if I remember to do so. Sometimes I'll also do a little basic sketch of it like the others suggested. Just find a way to hold on to those ideas for when you've gotten gooder, you'll probably be glad you did.

First off, the picture is pretty good overall. The basic structures and shapes are all correct AFAICT and the problems lie mainly in some details and proportions. Let's just say it's nice to see someone your level looking to improve.

>1
The angle of the eye is a bit too forward/vertical.

>2
UTIYPSP, the mouth could be a bit higher for a more feminine/youthful look--same with the jaw/chin line. If you want the muzzle to look a bit narrower and daintier/more childlike, you can move the nostril up just a smidge, about its own height.

>3
UTIYPSP about the the sword-shaped primaries, anyways I drew in butterknife primaries for demonstration. Main point here is not the feather shape, it's the secondaries' placement. Note that the redrawn secondaries are in such angles and have such length that they cover up where the primaries meet and would begin to overlap. The outline of the primaries naturally needs to be wedged deep enough for this to look balanced. The other option is to show overlap in the primaries to avoid the paper cutout look.

>4
The hind legs are correct, but the foreshortening is excessive for such a shallow space so they look undersized, even somewhat disconnected. So suggesting you make them a bit larger.

>5
This front leg slightly too long,

>6
Careful with the slope of elbow and arm outlines, a small difference makes a big impact on how long the arm seems to be and too steep an angle makes it look like the elbow hangs way below the chest level.

*UTIYPSP: unless this is your personal stylistic preference
>>
>>29681260

>7
Shortened the arm/lifted the elbow a bit here as well, were too realistic for the rest of the image.

Note the change in how far the limb outlines enter the silhouette of this bent leg. The left foreleg is in a frontal enough angle that it needs a 'full circle' outline. The right one however falls in a 3/4th view and if the lines are not interrupted, they make the arm and forearm look like separate pieces glued onto each other and the torso rather than organic shapes flowing into each other.

>8
Neck looks stocky. Chest width = neck width might work in strict show style, but you have a more realistic rounded chest here so making her neck the same width looks heavy and masculine.

>9
Wing tip: for visually pleasant curves and a hint of realism in the realm of aerodynamics, imagine/sketch sticks inside the primaries. Make the sticks fan out. Use sticks as guides for your primaries' directions. Blue: observed directions. Pink: example of improved directions.

Yo this is really nice. My only complaint would be that her jaw would need to be moved back just a bit and that her wide-eyed stare is a bit off-putting. The left leg (our left) could be brought in just a bit, overlapping the body.

Nice job lining up the major features of the head though. You'd be surprised how often I see people fuck up that basic concept.

some thoughts I can give for your next picture, whatever it might be
- you get ONE lightsource per image--pick wisely
- get some super practise in just doodling random fave characters in outfits and poses from "celebs in normalpeople clothes" snapshots or whatever -- harsh daylight photos are great for clear shadows -- don't concentrate too much on shape and anatomy beyond getting the overall figure recognisable, just get some sloppy-ass shading in and move to the next one
- fill out a printer sheet or something go crazy
-sound boring? bet you can't fill the paper under 30 min!
- no sweating details during this exercise!

Here we go, part one.

>Achtung
You'll want to get a good look at this at zoom levels 25-50%.

>1
marked in light blue some things in the hair that don't make sense:
- a sliver of hair on the top, inexplicably flowing against the natural direction--I'm all for Ponx having crazy whorls but if it's a whorl it should show
-at our left, a bump of hair mass that doesn't seem to have much reason to jut out, or terminate abruptly the way it does
-at the top, almost flowing onto her part, a large mass of hair--this line is not necessarily the one that needs to be fixed, but this looks like a very separate entity, like a badly blended-in switch
- it's also very voluminous but curves around the head strongly without an apparent reason, even distorting the mass above it--with some editing it'd be convincing either as a falling megastrand or a sloppy pull-up in the back
- hair is tricky and stylised hair is also tricky
- studying photos is very recommended
- hint: try to find photos of commonfolk, especially of those who don't conform to Western fashions, there's only so much you can learn from looking at perfectly straightened/permed borefests

>2
Use shading to hint at creases and garment structures such as seams. You could also use detailing linework to do the same, but the effect is a bit different and IMO not as organic and soft. Your picture here relies very little on lineart in any case so I went with shading only.

>3
Shadows below and at the sides of (and sometimes on) the bust is a powerful tool to bring out the shape in an understated fashion. Use it responsibly.

>4
One of the things I noticed first--arms are practically cylinders, so 1/3-width shadow in this light is just wrong and distorts the shape.

>5
See yellow dash line for rough approximation of hairline. Assuming this is Pank's own hair and not a wig on her shiny cueball, the hairline must show below the part.
>>
>>29680586
What, no track ball? >>29681260 looks a lot better than the older ones do, even with a mouse. I'm not saying it's not appreciated, because I'm sure it is, it's just hard to read what's going on.
>>
>>29683335
>6
The eyebrow protrudes slightly from the forehead plane thanks to local small muscles and the hairs. Thus it should cast some shadow even if they're shaved and painted in. The top of the eyebrow right here is raised due to the expression, so the shadow dips a bit to show how the flesh swells slightly from under it.

>7 + 8
The eyelid folds are curved surfaces and should have curved shadows.

Eye highlights should always conform to the main light source and be consistent--if you copy and flip the other eye, remember to adjust the highlight! Or just do the highlights afterwards. In this pic the straight above lightsource combined with the lowered lids makes a challenging combo, so I cheated and put the highlights off to one side. Note that the small highlight is actually light going through the lense, so its placement is dependent on the main light source as well.

>9
Cheeks are curved surfaces. Using curved cast shadows helps to bring out the shape and depth of the facial features.

>10
Lip shadows shall not be neglected. Note the small shadows on the upper lip's lower surface that bring out the cupid's bow, and the tiny curved specks at the ends of her mouthline enhancing nuance in the expression. The creases between the cheeks and muzzle area are very important for human expression readability--they're often omitted in drawings, but can be hinted at with the mouth corner specs.

>>29683364
No trackball. Not after the incident.

Also thanks. With this one it can't be helped, shading can't really be shown in redline mode and shading is definitely the thing I'd address first here. Or maybe I should've desaturated the picture for better readability? Oh well it's done. OP can crop and save under adjacent names and quick-switch-compare in a photo viewer or something.
>>
>>29683455
>11, 12, 13
Eyeballs are curved surfaces and shall be shaded accordingly.

The eyelid is a protruderance above and outside of the eyeball and as such does cast a shadow onto it. This shadow shall not be neglected, especially with sensual expressions.

Eyelashes. Spend some time looking at eye close-ups, without make-up if you can find them, because eyelashes are wondrous things, quite simple once you figure them out, and knowing their behaviour will make for a small improvement with a great impact. I won't elaborate because I'd end up rambling.

Shadow under the bony brow ridge and beside the top of the nasal bridge--very important feature in showing depth in humanoid faces. It's also very useful for non-explicitly bringing out the nose. This corner is the deepest in the human face right after the subnasal area, and thus should have a shadow pretty much always.

It all depends on what do you want to know. I have no clue how to do backgrounds because I am afraid they will look like shit. 1. perspective is huge in backgrounds the sooner you sort that out the better. you can make a grid to mark where things can be placed.
2. i drew things outside the grid so i can see if they make sense coming into our frame.
3. is showing a block 1 point and 2 point. so you can see the difference.
4. shows how move things in perspective while keeping the scale proper. this works on any object.

once you learn a bit about composition you can easily work it in to your perspective

>I guess /ic/ wouldn't agree on some issues.
>#1: Daily work
They agree. 4+ hours a day or you're not serious about getting gud.
>#2: Volume, not perfection
Oldfags generally agree. Book "Art and Fear" is often quoted on that subject.
That being said, if you're autistic, doing lot's of art won't help you.
>#3: Steal
They agree.
>#4: Concious Learning
They agree: often in study threads someone will point out that mindless copying is a waste of time.
>#5: Rest
lol, nope. Generally speaking they ignore that.
>#6: Get feedback

>#7: Create what you love
Arguable. Lot's of d/ic/ks have mentality of drawing what's popular to get a fanbase faster.
>>
>>29687368
>>29687642
>Only 4 hours a day.
The average artist is doing 8+ hours a day. Great artists /ic/ jerks off to like KGJ in particular filled 50 pages in a single day, every day for 8 years straight.
>Volume, not perfection
Only up to a certain point. If you do 50 pages of mediocre art you don't put much effort into. You'll be good at making mediocre art that looks like minimal effort was put into it. Better you have 5-8 good pieces than 50 okay ones. The only reason to do a shorter study is if you're doing an extremely focused one.
>3, 4
Alright.
>Rest.
Depends how you rest. A good book and some experimental drawing during downtime or a relaxing day at a good museum is a lot more beneficial than playing timesink video games. Time off should be learning to love your craft and getting inspiration because creativity never happens in a vacuum.
>6, 7.
About right. You need to be realistic about things if you want to build a fanbase. But you only get better doing what you like. It's a bonus if the two can merge but this really depends on the person's endgoal.

That being said, the people from /ic/ I talk to don't go to /ic/ anymore because of the influx of newfags who don't even bother to read the god damn sticky. The ones that post the most are the ones that do agree that 4+ hours is enough and for some reason expect they're going to make it as anything other than a hobbyist.

>Bonus feature
I didn't fix this as much as paint over it so consider this more like a demo than actual c/c.

0.
- untouched hair (save for hairline)

1.
- erase some bumpies on top and add to the sides to improve full curly look
- phatten dem shadows, phatten dem curls*, blob in some shine
- basically just painting in the basic shape with the midtone and then carve out shapes by defining major shadows + highlights
- loopies & tight curves 4 curliness
- note the halo-like highlight on the top of the head

2.
- grab the brushy brush and add detail and texture to both shadows and highlights
- note how the halo breaks up into short segments of various sizes -- this brings out irregular height of hair volumes at her crown and brings back the bumpy shape
- a more regular and even halo would make the crown look smooth and flat
- note the part--it's something of an elongated whorl, which goes well with the hairstyle, it's pretty clear that the hair is falling in pretty much all directions and not flowing neatly to one side or the other
- working at quite a small zoom level, keeps me focused on the main features
- highlights refined to conform better to desired varying curves and directions of curls and bends

3.
- drawing in some shinies
- in addition to enhancing shininess (duh) they also add to the texture impression

4.
- doing the same sort of thing as #2 but now with smaller brush
- use both midtone and shadow to further refine and texturize

5.
- comparison piece of how you do this with cell shading as opposed to painting
- all points still apply, only instead of brush strokes you use elongated sawtooth shaped edges between value fields to bring out the texture
- again, pays to take a look at a small zoom level

* strands of hair don't taper out too strongly unless they're just FUBAR and 90% split ends or it's some sort of emotard cut--unless you want that hobo flair, usually we're going to have very gradual taper for healthy/groomed look

So, I haven't been drawing properly for about a month now, so getting back into it i had to re-study some stuff.

I've decided I'm going to draw all of the mane6 that google spits at me, the first full body picture from top left whatever it is. so this is the result so far... That pinkie pose really came in out of nowhere considering I hardly ever drawn anything that is not just standing still side or 3/4 pose. But it was fun figuring out the skeleton of that pinkie pose!

Any general /ic/ is welcome.

I'm mostly drawing my pictures relatively small (about 1/4 of A4 height), so I usually fuck up the eyes because of that. how big (relative to an A4 size) do you guys draw when practicing? does size matter?

- not bad for a start, you get the shapes and proportions about right although relative angles need precision and your hand is super heavy
- 1/4th of an A4 is decent, but going bigger helps to cope with WIP motoric skills -- just remember to step back once in a while (i.e. ambulatory zoom-out) so the larger scale doesn't end up screwing your perception over
- you're supposed to be drawing on paper, not engraving in metal--lighten your grip, absolutely no squeezing the pencil! (drawing larger helps here too)
- make sure you have suitably bright light in your drawing area and/or a soft enough pencil
- harsh truth: to git gud in drawing things you like you'd best be drawing things that you have no interest in--it builds ways around your symbol-obsessed neurons
- so for every page of ponies, sketch a decapod or a fish or an orchid flower or something like that from a photo
- get in the habit of checking your drawings mirrored--either via an actual mirror or against a bright light--you'll be able to find flaws you weren't noticing
- draw some more, draw bigger, post again

>>29690335
- well for starters she has no ribcage or belly whatsoever
- or a muzzle
- lashes growing out of her eyeball
- pole-shaped hindlegs, funnel-shaped forelegs
- butt curve cutting into the gaskin a bit too far, makes the entire leg look like it's 30 degrees rotated inwards
- horn's base too low, nearly at the same level as tops of eyes
- crease on the breast makes it look like 1: her forelegs are overly long and 2: her chest is extremely narrow
- for instant +25 points, decide on what her jacket is supposed to be like, and make it so, i.e. find reference and fill in missing details and parts, adjust line flow to suit the material etc

3 point perspective is not 5 point. just to be clear.
you can use 3 point at about anytime. but 3 point tends to show up when your horizon line is off the image or close too being off. so it's more oriented toward displaying things from above/below. but it's the most natural of the perspectives.
in 1 point your horizontals/verticals are parallel.
alomost the same in two point. (the verticals are still parallel.
>>29678955

refer to the attached image and see the cube's sides non are parallel to eachother cause they all go to a point of their own.
5 point is when shit gets weird.
all horizontal point from 4. to 5. will have varying degrees of curve. same with the horizonals 2. to 3. any lines leading back to 1 will be straight.
so in most images you see in fish eye the round lens is cropped out and you're left with your framed image
>>
>>29692177
3point isn't fisheye*
5 point is fisheye and everything goes weird. cause you can adjust how much the perspective actually curves. look into different types of fish eye lens and see how much distortion each one has and affects a photo

1. basic shapes and proportions
2. posing and details
3. basic shading and line quality
4. the rest

urgent advice:
- an entire skeletal guide shall be sketched
- the figure shall be drawn onto the skeletal guide, not vice versa
- construction guidelines shall be employed to mark central lines where needed (hint: skull needs some)
- anatomical symmetry and pose quality shall be assessed prior to adding secondary features such as mane+tail, facial expression etc.
- tail shall grow from the dock; the dock shall contain the tailbone; the tailbone shall be the extension of the spine
- naked figure first, then clothes/hair/whatever
- to successfully draw clothes on ponies you need to know how clothes look, and be well aware of the 3D shape of a pony

Thanks for the tips.
as a note, I'm not at home currently and I don't have my liner with me. So the lines are heavy cause I sketch using a 2B and then trace it with 4B instead of a liner

I'm trying to draw something other then pone, and I'm really struggling here! I look at a flower or a fish and I have no idea where to even start... Which just proves your point that I've been symbol-drawing for some time now i guess... damn, back to basics i guess :/

The most crucial rule in geometry: perspective preserve aspects.

Your window is fucked up. When you are trying to draw a window in the middle of the wall, you'll have to keep that in mind:

1. project the wall onto orthographic plane (doesn't matter which direction)
2. draw the window. Your eye is very good at making out halves, thirds, 4ths, ... it's what you couldn't do in your image because it doesn't work "in-perspective"
3. project the window back onto the perspective wall.
4. ???
5. Profit!

Alternatively, draw them in orthography and use your drawing program's perspective tool to transform it onto the projection.

Same goes for the door and your pony. Project the heights onto the same plane, size em up, and put them back in the world to make it correct. This is the kind of essential consistency that will instinctively make the image look pleasant to the viewer. We can't draw perspective free-hand, but we can make out even the tiniest error in a perspective drawing. Conversely, absence of such errors makes us very comfortable and draws us into an image.

1/2s, 3/4s, and 1/4s become distorted the more foreshortened something becomes. If you're not familiar with dividing objects into these basic proportions then practice it because its a fundamental skill that doesnt take long to get really familiar with.

okay so your house could use some tweaking. other than that you need to learn to place the figure into a 3d space and also scale it to the perspective it's in. That way objects in the background will be the appropriate size if you were to move your character closer to the horizon line and closer to said object (door, window, anything) etc.
in comparison to your house the pont is very flat and shows little form in perspective.
the green box would represent the pony, the blue circles where the hooves might be planted.
examples also show a figure+ an object moving next to it in perspective. because if you van place a single figure in an image you can literally use that figure to scale everything else in perspective.

OK, but seriously, using expensive paper is a waste of money right now. For practicing lineart, paper from your printer will do just fine. Sketchbooks with paper that have big tooth (like the one you're using) are meant for rendered pieces.
Your proportions are off, you didn't used any guidelines.
Your lines are really messy. When doing lineart instead of drawing many lines in the same place, hoping that one of them will be OK, practice moving your pencil over the place where line should go. Then make a single line.
And you didn't plan that drawing beforehand. Starting with lineart instead of sketch is something only people with more experience can pull off. Start with a very lightly made sketch. This way you won't run out of space and next time you won't be forced to make legs so short.

Attempt was made, but I wouldn't hang it on my fridge/10

Just keep on truckin' Anon.

>>29699548
If you're worried about cost, what I used to do when I started was buy a huge roll of cheap light brown wrapping paper and cut it myself. Newsprint is very cheap too. Both are a fraction of the cost of printing paper and you can cut them into large pieces too if you want to draw big.

I also had a metal clamp and an old piece of illustration board to have it on when I went outside to draw people. I think it was part of the reason I drew nonstop and near carelessly because I didn't have to worry about ruining a nice sketchbook or wasting money.

Dude, rule number 1 of 2PP. Never put your vanishing points inside the frame. It makes your drawing look sharp/distorted as fuck.
>>
>>29703367
i mean there's no solid rule that you should. But you're right further apart they are the better. closer VPs on one object will mean it looks weird as shit when you try to rotate objects etc.

I kinda forgot while drawing up the lines for that one.

The shadows don't follow a light source, like how there is both shadows on her back and next to her. I do like the shading on the bum. Perspective is fine.
I don't have much experience with either so I'm kind of making up stuff.

>shading
Barely any shading. As anon said already, the cast shadow of the pony is inconsistent with the shadows on its body. Pick a lightsource!

Also, the combination of the pose and the environment is just too complicated for beginner practice. Hint: to practise shading on pony body, look for strongly lit photos of pony figurines.

>perspective
You have no perspective in the image. There are no parallel nor perspective-parallel lines.

Note that the lines I drew in are not in a perspective grid--they're in a pseudo-perspective, projection grid. Good enough for small scale scenes like this.

Also the lie of corner lines is too low, if this was 3D graphics the pony's left hindleg would be clipping into the wall.

Forgot about the paint overs I was going to do in the last thread. I've been shitting myself for 2 weeks after that damned trip. Anyways, here's the building blocks of my thought process when I paint something. And why I suggested that one challenge a few threads ago, because it’s pretty good for all skill levels. I used a default square brush for this, not much hue nor saturation shifts between the light and the dark, and only one light source for the sake of example.

No matter how stylized something is light will always behave the same way. It's fundamental knowledge. Toss the idea that you're making a 2-D image out the window and really start to think based on the forms that should be there. Where will the light source hit? Take a big brush and messily block it in. It's just two main values you're looking for. If you think you have it wrong, flip the canvas, zoom out, or take a break. But if you take as much time as you need to get this part done right without jumping forward too hastily. If you can draw a roll of toilet paper being lit under a desk lamp, you can do this.

Usually next, I’ll directly apply where soft and hard edges are. But for the sake of study, especially if I can’t wrap my head around the form, I always think of therms in flat planes. Here I added back in some bounce light. Because everything is mirrors. Same process from there on. If you think it’s right, subdivide until you get something that almost looks smooth.
