You begin to feel very tired, and quite frustrated.

"I don't know," you sigh. "Maybe digging for treasures was a bad idea?"
She doesn't reply, fiddling with the shovel between her hooves.

The next day, you go fetch some lemon, and Sugar Star adds all the good things that turn the lemon juice it into lemonade. You spend the afternoon selling your product to a few ponies, and make about eighty bits out of it! Rich ponies are really rich.
Soon you'll be able to buy that lodge!

It does crib a couple of character abilitys from 40k namely a blank and a drednaught and the ocasional minor refrence but nothing major

Battles are not edgy brutal sure but edgy seems a poor choice of words
The stuff with the star magic is a little edgy but its the good kind of edgy more grimdark then grimderp and there is plenty of softer stuff to balance it out

I would say the main bulk of the quest is interactions with the other characters

I will agree it is certaintly not for everybody though (especialy sunfags it does not paint celestia in a very good light at all)

Alright, so I'm sorta working on a Paper Mario-esque CYOA and I have two questions:
One: is it worth trying to put together a battle system? I have no experience with them, but I was also thinking PM was simple enough that I could figure it out. Turn based, damage applies in small numbers like 1s, 2s, etc. If it didn't have a battle system, would you be less interested?

Two: I'd like to use actual paper to help differentiate my shit from Juicy's dead Paper Pony quest. Not like paper craft, but just paper cutouts against a drawn background. It'd be time consuming, but I think it'd be cute. So I guess the question is; would anyone mind the style?

Three: Pic related is my concept for a Diamond Dog partner. I'd like opinions on him. Too edgy?

If you can find a way to take pictures or scan it so that the quality is consistent and it doesn't take you an entire day to produce one slide, it'd be fine.
As for the partner, whether or not he's edgy would depend on the overall tone of the quest. If it's supposed to be light-hearted like paper Mario, then you may want to consider changing his weapon to a bat or hammer or something, as that may seem less edgy than a tool with a literally sharp edge.

Any kind of conflict can do. I just find "swipe sword at X, shoot thing at Y, dodge left, dodge right" not very engaging, personally. It can be okay as part of a quest but I'm not too keen of it being the focus of a quest. Again, just personal preference and with a good system it's a totally valid thing to have in quests. It's much better than "you have 56 HP and 78ATK, you hit the enemy for 27dmg, he now has 494 HP left", too.

... except I don't really like quests that mainly focus on combat. I think RGS had a good mix for example. I loved it in "This Fucker". Fights were rare but real highlights and - as you mentioned - more focused on the "how's".

And it also depends on the tone of the quest I guess. I don't mind bleak or dark settings (except for grimdark/grimderp) but I like those more for the atmosphere. Sadly, quests with those settings tend to be rather combat-heavy. There were some rather light-hearted quests in the past that had a lot of fighting and I enjoyed those as well forgot the name but we had a pet-golem and a male pegasus companion who was kind of a dick. BoatQuest was rather enjoyable in that aspect as well.

It's hard to generalize. But at the end of the day, I'd say I prefer narrative-focused quests with a bit of action here and there.

That's one of the bigger issues to me as well. Since the entire thing is revamped every time there's no way to actually learn the new system without being in sekrit and talking to him. Normally for any game you learn how the system works from prior experience, so anyone could figure it out through experience, or in quests through reading past fights. It's impossible to do so in Hijack. Old players, new players, players that enjoy combat, it doesn't matter, the way he goes only works for two people.

It's not wrong [although it is occassionally mishandled], but its definitely why combat has to be easy. If you threaten to de-horn steel and then players lose, what happens? If you de-horn him, you thoroughly jump the shark, if you don't then your next dark plot element losses gravitas. He can't exactly maim the characters carrying his story and if he does do-overs then he's just extending combat sections, which will always keep some people away.

So the solution is easy combat, which some people will see as a criticism of his system even though it has more to do with the story than the combat.
