The song was nice, I just wish it wasn't so poorly embedded within the episode. The way it started, when it happened and how it was storyboarded in regards of the situation presented ruined the whole effect.

It could have been a great song for sad Spike trying to figure out what to do, Pinkie's Lament style. It definitely didn't went well with the whole standing up for a friend theme.

I liked the episode overall, and Thorax commenting about getting the Changlings to give a fuck and care about each other as a source of food was cute. The song and Shining/Cadences quick turn around were the down points I thought. I don't even think it would have needed to be a two parter, just better paced from the start.

I hope the finale is the main six trying to rehabilitate Chrysalis, and she's in a position where she has absolutely no interest in getting reformed but can't just tell them to fuck off without getting blasted back into the wasteland, so she's just getting shown around ponyville passively dryly commenting on everything, and slowly coming to realize how much better life is in ponyville

Wow MLPG stop being so ded after an episode

I'm a bit late to the party, but whatever.

I always wanted an episode to bring more on the lore of changelings. (In a way, I did, seeing those little changeling grubs hatch. Very cute in a gross way.)

However, I feel that they didn't use enough imagination to show how they were truly different from other ponies. Let's face it, Thorax was designed to be more "human" among monsters to make him more likable. Indeed, it made the transition of him being foe to friend easy, but also very forced.

I feel the story would have packed more punch if Thorax was following the Queen's orders from the get go. Maybe he saved Spike to gain a favor and played along to get closer to the baby. Only when he finds that, after he was forced to flee, he would be moved with Spike coming back to get him the second time. Something, ANYTHING, that made him truly different from the rest of Ponykind.

I was very disappointed. Thorax wasn't a true changeling-turned-neutral in my eyes. He was like everybody else with a shade of black, and THAT was where the story fell short.

Spike comes out as gay to Twilight.

Interesting. I didn't feel bothered by the lack of reform or change of heart by Thorax. I was fine with the idea that he's a changeling who just doesn't have it in him to be nasty and follow the hivemind. He's just "one of the good ones".

You definitely wanted something differently out of it than I did. I can see why you were disappointed. The story you wanted where Thorax was a spy to begin with and befriends Spike and just wants regular ol' pony friendships instead and becomes reformed would be interesting. I'm not sure if they could pace that out properly in 22 minutes. Maybe if they cut down on the opening a bit and some of his tour with Spike.

Do we really need yet another reform episode? As is the episode was, it had some nice ideas about standing up for friends and about believing others. The fact the princesses trusted Spike's judgement in Thorax seems like something that could be empowering for children.

This episode committed my biggest pet peeve: the sudden turnaround. Ponies all looking super pissed at the end of the song and even as twi walked over... then next frame all cheers and super welcoming. Ffs couldn't they have made a gradual change of expression as the song went on? And a more realistic Luke warm acceptance? Like "this is a lot to take in but we'll give you a chance"? It would have all fit into the same time.

Yeah, that was some shit reuse in that song. Exact same animations for the exact same lines that close together. Not a single difference. Not until the third did Spike do something mildly different. Their expressions didn't really change, just like you said.

It was fine with them being super accepting because of the chain of "if Spike says he's okay, Twilight is okay with it and if Twilight and Spike are okay with it, Cadance is okay with it, and Shining will believe his wife, sister and Spike." but there needed to be some editing in there to show that better. The show does such a good job making sure the little viewers understand things then they kind of just gloss over the facial expressions or explaining why they trusted Spike. Maybe they didn't. I should watch it again.

Honestly, the reason I wanted him to be in the spy in the first place was because I like the idea of these changelings being "inhuman" monsters. After what I read in the comics, canon or not, I warmed up to the idea that these were somewhat of a plague, capable of wiping cities. The only way was THEIR way.

That would definitely make it more amazing that Spike made a Changeling friend, because it would show that, even in the face of opposition, he would reach out and touch the heart of something so unlikely to listen. After all, would you listen to what your next meal ticket had to say? They made Thorax too open. If they had only made him open to the idea of friendship, just a little, it would make the conversion that more glorious.

I'm going to get off the ride if they convert Chrysalis. That shouldn't fly, no way, no how. The show needs a definite antagonist, even if there are some rogue followers out there.

Yeah, dehumanizing the Changelings a bit more would have been interesting. Make them more instinct-driven. It's possible the Changelings will still be presented that way. Thorax from birth seemed to be less nasty than the rest.

Maybe show Thorax slipping out of English and into just growls and hisses more instead? Make it seem like speaking is unnatural to him. Maybe with a speech impediment like hissing for s's and rolling his r's or something. More like noise.

What you're proposing sounds like a better episode, really. Maybe it was even written that way originally. But I think they really, really wanted to sell Thorax as a genuine character and had difficulty making his reform seem genuine after coming out as a spy.

I'm always suspect when there's more than a simple Written by X or Written by Team X. The story was by 3 people. I feel like sacrifices were made. And that song was probably unnecessary and should have been cut.

I love the idea of alien changelings but fuck that guy. Changelings aren't base thoughtless and evil creatures. If that was the case, chrysalis has no need to cater or love them. As is, she replaced cadence near perfectly. If shit went down, she could have dissapeared. she insinuated herself into the highest chain of royalty.
