You have all the rights in the world to be a critic if you read through a thread
I agree it's more wordy than I had hoped, but I chose to give players a picture of what the youth of the haracter is exactly like, but most of it would be probably boring to play so I made green out of it

I guess it would be fine if they were in their changeling form but he was a pony when we got him and i always thought transformations were more restrictive if that makes sense.

So how much freedom do you allow in your cyoa? Let's say the setting is a pirate ship and the mc is a pirate pone on board. When suddenly, OH NO! GIANT CRAB! But then the players decide to shitpost and say they want the mc to do her taxes right then and there. Do you let them? Do you let them completely ignore the danger and disrupt the flow of the game? Do you make the crab attack the mc anyway and then the players say they dodge the attack and escape in a life raft and do more taxes? Do you have the monster attack the raft and OH MY GOD THIS QM IS A FAGGOT JUST FUCK OFF!

Is that YOU? Or do you say that they can't do their taxes and have to fight the GOD YOU ARE A FAGGOT! FUCK THIS GAME!
>>
>>27676182
I'm sorry?
>>
>>27676195
How do you keep the game flowing without railroading or hand holding in the slightest? Players bitch no matter what.
>>
>>27676208
>Players bitch no matter what.
This is true, and I find that it's best just to let them bitch.
People who bitch at the QM are the worst. Speaking both as a player and a QM.
The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to ignore the bitching and keep the game moving.

In your example, though, if everyone decided to ignore the incoming threat, I would have the monster attack the ship, do a minor amount of damage and let them know I'm serious.

If they continued fucking around, I'd bring the hammer down. Kill off a party member, badly injure the MC.

If they still continue doing their taxes, then it's clear they don't want to play anymore, and I'd probably consider killing the MC.

Of course, if you're playing an adventure where you encourage and enjoy shitposting, then that's different, but in your situation, that's what I'd do.
>>
>>27676306
But what if the railroading is because the QM is just bad? In the quest Planeswalker. In less than 10 posts, the QM managed to let our home village get destroyed, have a disease run rampant, have corrupted plants spread like wildfire, and have our mom get disintegrated when we try to teleport her and us away. Player actions were basically disregarded at every step. Should we be allowed to complain about that?
>>
>>27676371

I am suddenly glad I didn't bother picking this quest up.
>>
>>27676371
Criticism is valid, certainly.

There's a difference between bitching and valid complaints.
>>
>>27676378
>>27676371
Yeah. I saw all that happen, I wasn't very happy. Not sure if I will head back to that quest.
>>
>>27676371
Seems like the QM had exactly one way this intro was going to go, and player input was meaningless
>>
>>27676423
He actually said it was avoidable despite us not getting a chance to avoid it.
>>
>>27676442
Yeah, he knocked our character out for three days. At that point everything gone to shit!
>>
>>27676442
Nah. He said he wanted the whole thing to start on a tragedy. His excuse was "I was just trying to be realistic. Those magical metal balls you brought home were actually dangerous corrupted plant seeds an you should've never brought em. Anyways, you have magic. Now go fix everything you did."
>>
>>27676473
Even though the seeds acted more like slow-picking-up-pace bullets. How were we suppose to know they were seeds?
>>
>>27676489
He wasn't expecting us to know. He kept making subtle suggestions every post saying that we should find a container to take them back. He WANTED it to happen.
>>
>>27676473
>no way to know we brought the evil seeds
>trying to be realistic

Beautiful.
>>
>>27676473
Shouldn't have brought them despite having them act in a very strange manner infront of a character who's core trait is curiosity. Than he knocked us out for somewhere between three days and a week and wake us up just in time for everything to go to hell. He also said that we could've found out how dangerous they were before everything went wrong, but we had no input over that period of time.
>>
>>27676473
Oh, so he's a le ebin ruseman QM?
>>
>>27676526
Yep. Every suggestion we made in that quest was literally a narrow escape from an unexpected "oh no! you died" and we didn't even know it.

When we teleported into a desert. There was a sandstorm coming. We debated whether we should take refuge in the giant walled city or just teleport back home. When we teleported home and came back to the desert, the city was just a pile of rubble.

Another one was when we tried to open some magical door contraption. Everyone suggested try to power it with a lightning bolt. At the last second, I said let our storm golem do it instead of us..... the storm golem exploded when he casted the lightning bolt.

>get popularity points
I understand that, but don't. Popularity means lots of players, and lots of different players with different opinions, timezones, and agendas. That's how you end up with three threads long arguments. And as you can easily tell, they're not enjoyable for anyone, QM, players, or readers. See M&M, Dirty Work

>just become relevant
Now that's something I understand. You want people to acknowledge your presence and think you're doing a good job in general, so that you can feel your thread (and you, by extension) deserve their place on the board.
Well, good news: >pic related are the threads you could potentially bump off the board with your new thread.
People will usually bitch because of useless / repeated bumping, tripfag circlejerks, and threads that can be driven and contributed to by one person only. There are less complaints for new content, or things people like. And you'll never know if people dislike your thing until you actually start it - or at least pitch your idea here, for a CYOA.

>not for fun
If you don't enjoy it, nobody is going to enjoy it. See that one infamous retconned demotion in Threshold.
Sometimes you will have to force yourself a bit, especially if you want your thing to keep being a thing for a long time. But if you get absolutely no satisfaction out of it, if you don't like or aren't proud of what you do, then there is little to no point in doing it.

>>

>>

Fine, "I'll TRY to play your shit". Better? I'll admit to dropping crap quests, but I at least try pretty much everything. I wouldn't even try out "I'm running out of obligation to make people like me: the quest".
>>
>>27679974
Yes, better. I try every new quest (unless it's blatantly lewd) too.

Speaking of reasons to play or drop a quest, what about run schedule?

Just a few hours every weeknight, dead during the week and comes back for a bit on weekends. On and off semi-randomly. Long hiatuses but sure to come back eventually.

Just how important is runtime consistency?
>>
>>27679974
>>27679990
Doxels pls.
>>
>>27680038
Quite. Players notice QMs post patterns, and that affects who's around to keep the thread bumped. Plus with a regular schedule you don't have to keep informing everyone you're running. Without that, well you can always just monitor your thread and update the general when you run.
>>
>>27680038
>Just how important is runtime consistency?
Not even remotely. As long as you say when you'll run and don't just disappear, nobody gives a shit.

>Hey guys, I'm not going to be able to run this week, but next week I can run every day but only in the afternoon, and after that just weekends.
Thanks for letting us know.
>>
>>27680038
Nobody gives a fuck about the run schedule so long as you actually hold your word and run by it.
Just look at Pyrefly: He kept promising to return this day and that day, yet he never did. And now his CYOA is pretty much dead because of it.
>>
>>27680064

>>
>>27680038
Your schedule needs to match how you run. If you run weekly then each week's session should feel like there was solid progression. Daily doesn't have to deal with that since it has constant engagement. As long as your schedule matches how you run and you hold to what you say then you can do whatever.
>>
>>27680038
I say it very important. Consistency of schedule and run time are a part of why my favorite cyoas are my favorite.

Fluttershy is Unimpressed.gif
359KB, 404x393px
Can someone please explain this whole cyoa thing to me? From what I've seen here in the few threads I've dropped into, the qm offers a setting and maybe a main character and then players control everything by saying an npc has appeared or something else happens and then the qm flavors it up a bit. But in an actual cyoa story book or visual novel, the author controls the npcs and setting and the players control the main character for better or for worse. The difference being that everything is an ongoing scenario instead of freeform all the way. So which is it being used here? I want to join the fun, too.
>>
>>27683109
The second.

The players only control the main character, QM does everything else.
>>
>>27683118
That doesn't appear to be the case, Anon.
>>
>>27683109
Most CYOAs on /mlp/ have the players only control the MC and the QM controls everything else.
If you want to participate, go into a thread that looks interesting, catch up on the story, and then suggest an action for the MC to preform.
>>
>>27683136
I haven't seen a single CYOA where that's not the case.
>>
What is specifically required of a qm?
>>
>>27683136
What threads are you looking at?
You are talking about /mlp/ CYOAs right?
>>
>>27683109
Here, I'm just going to highlight the parts of your post that you got right.
>the author controls the npcs and setting and the players control the main character
>everything is an ongoing scenario
There, done. Now you know how CYOAs work.

>>27683136
I have no idea what quests you are looking at, anon.
>>
>>27683184
To run the quest.
>>
>>27683184
To provide the setting, NPCs, and MC.
The players characterize the MC and say what they do.
>>
>>27683205
Then what should a qm not do? If the qm must ensure the game must continue, and is supposed to progress the game based on the player's actions, then how can one get it wrong if everything is made up on the fly with some pre-scripted stuff thrown in?
>>
>>27683224
>Then what should a qm not do?
Not run the quest.
>>
>>27683224
>Then what should a qm not do?
Trivialize player input or make them feel like they're just along for the ride in a greentext.
>>
>>27683224
Ignore player input, punish the players for no reason, say they're going to run and then not run, put humans in their quest (unless they're nips), or put systems in their quest (unless they're Hiji).

yeah, and a lot of early modern english is just a very lattinate version of modern english, with a bit of shakespearian thrown in there.

"from ancient grudge, break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean"

none of that eth or est going on here, just like poetry, held all the way through, people consider old modern english very well put together, probably because there was peasents speaking 'Anglo' and 'Latinate' speaking nobles, and shakespeare wrote half way inbetween.

god, some of his stuff really is beautiful, but some of it is really stupid sounding as well.

In the year 2077 pony-kind has expanded to the stars. As their species flourished further and further from their home planet, a push from the powers that hold dominion over the home world has begun to take absolute power over the colonies. Seeing how corrupt the home world government has become, the conies form a shaky alliance to push back the home world's forces, using young hot-shot mech pilots.

To the one anon who might care, the Pony Planeswalker cyoa will pick up tomorrow night at 9pm and could become a nightly thing if there's interest in it. There's going to be an in-universe reboot of the events from the first session... sort of. I think you'll find a happy medium has been reached so the backstory can remain true to M:tG in its tragicness while player control hasn't been corralled into an unwinnable situation.

As always, knowledge of M:tG isn't important in this game but you might "get" some references. Also, the main character exists in a ponified multiverse and will never visit or interact with established M:tG canon. We will make our own rules and planes up as we go. Players are also encouraged to think up "summons" for the main character to keep on hand for battles or to help her on her quest. See you there.

What do you consider the minimum amount of players for a quest? (Not counting the QM of course)

http://www.strawpoll.me/10530828
>>
>>27691474
If there's only one player then it's just two people telling a story to themselves. 2 players add variety but can disagree on how to proceed with no means to resolve the issue fairly. 3 players should be the minimum so that if there is a resolution on how the story should continue then a tiebreaker vote can decide.
>>
>>27691474
I said one, but that was dumb unless that one player has no life and is a good creative match for the QM.
>>
>>27691507
Three or more also feels less awkward.

I like think 1-3 players is good.
If you're the only one in a quest, you have all the freedom. Though having one or two extra players allows players to correct each other over bad suggestions and further refine strategies.

>>
>>27692328
>I just wonder if shes gonna try to stab us in the back if she even slightly gets the chance.

I have my doubts. She wanted out of the village primarily. So she will probably be content with that for awhile. However things will depend on whether we make a good binding deal with her or not. Unless of course Joyride alrady made a deal with Pip when meeting with LS.
>>
>>27692362
I get the feeling she'll be more temporary than anything, but that's mostly unfounded feelings.
>>
>>27692362

She's probably gonna stick around with us. I want her too at least.

I mean, we have a steady supply of monsters to burn and bad pony's souls to consume around every corner Emerald turns.
>>
>>27692400
I don't know if she'd be interested in monster souls. I get the impression she'd rather have pony souls.

But even so, soul stealing is something we should reserve for really really evil bastards. And even then I think we should be tactful in "wielding" it.
>>
>>27692422
>I get the impression she'd rather have pony souls.

She would probably prefer good souls of ponies over evil one's. As they are less corrupt and less like herself. Of course it's just a theory.

>But even so, soul stealing is something we should reserve for really really evil bastards

Agreed. Soul eating/stealing doesn't sound like a good aliment/karma act.
>>
>>27692439
>karma
Pippy already told us that we reek of corruption. Joyride probably does too. Our morals have basically decayed into nothing already. That combined with a low willpower check.

I have a sudden fear for more people like Venator now. I don't want to lose little Pippy.
>>
>>27692476
>Our morals have basically decayed into nothing already.

True they probably have, but we don't have to act that way.
>>
>>27692476
I think the debauchery kinda karma and killing/soul stealing are two different karmas. I would take anyone who is just slutty over someone who kills/soul steals indiscriminately any day.
>>
>>27692476
>I have a sudden fear for more people like Venator now. I don't want to lose little Pippy.

We'll just need to keep the book hidden. Besides the Order of Arrow would be very useful in taking out our step-parents. As long as they don't see us as evil as well.
>>
>>27692506
Which they would if they knew about us keeping Pip as company.

More CYOAs started and a higher rate of failure. Mostly because there's now a good deal of idiots out of school who rush headlong into running without an idea of what they're doing or how much commitment it'll require. Also a good deal of them have no idea how to write.

Imagine there is a qm out there who has the stubborn refusal to quit, the terrible ideas, and the inability to listen to critique. We usually refer to that QM as coltshan.

>Humans
>Equestria Girls
>Bad interpretation or refusal to accept player input
>Horrifying spelling and grammar
>Quests that are literally just excuses to write lewd green text
>Obscure or unusal ships that are the focus of the quest
>Quests that are made to explore a single concept, rather than setting or character.

Where is the anon who was dong all of those world-gen threads for creating his quest? The moment he said that he finished the last world-gen thread, he just sort of went silent.
>>
I've got it.
Res is gay for Tink. That's why he cares so much about someone in a CYOA he doesn't read.
>>
>>27695659
Res hasn't read super? you sure?
>>
>>27695662
Considering he's said as much. Yes.

If this is wolvan speaking, you really haven't learned much but to avoid provoking ire. You make the a lot of the same mistakes, just with improved grammer and less people polarized to your existence.
