Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

I wash the parts before I paint. With some other brands you would wash the runners before assembling to get the mold release off them before you glued and assembled everything. Most modern companies have gotten really good about cleaning off the runners before boxing thrm though.

I'm currently on step 01-3 of building an RG Exia, there's a part where it wants you to depress the colored strip G onto the leg and it will then stick to it or hold that shape. However the strip does not change when pressed down, remaining straight.

Could anyone help with how to get the strip to fit the contours of the leg?

I must have missed the image posted earlier. That's a ton more work than what I did, I basically only changed the visor size so I could fit clear visor parts.

I like how strange the kit proportions are compared to almost anything else. I also wanted to use the opportunity to try hand masking MSV style stripes, which turns out to be one of the biggest pains in the ass ever, but I keep doing it anyway because I like how it looks.

I'm like 80% of the way there on paint and then I have a bit more assembly for like the thrusters and leg hoses and little stuff like that, then decals and the rest of the finishing process.

The stripes were way easier on the origin dom test type because it comes with stickers, some of which (but not all) can be used as precut masks.

I think anyone who hasn't tried an old kit should get a 5-10 dollar one just to see what it's like; it really makes you appreciate some of the crazier builds of old kits. The original 1/144 Gundam kit is a good one to have, just as a neat part of the collection, but the old zeek kits are much more charming which is why you see them modded way more often.

Novelty factor aside, I think figuring out how to work around this stuff is what really makes you become better at modeling, not just because they take "more work," but because when you get to a step in the build that is fucking stupid you are forced to learn to recognize it and problem solve.

For example, on the psycommu zaku I made the shoulder armor attach via magnets because I looked at it and said "this is going to be a pain in the ass if I don't make some sort of change, and I want to learn how to use magnets."

When you build a new kit, you follow the instructions that someone really smart has laid down to get you to a great result. In contrast, old kit instructions are more like a blueprint that's kind of like "here's how the parts fit together, but just do whatever because it might look like shit if you do it this way."

There isn't much difference between the two. The articulation is about the same but the Revive has a little more. I like the Custom a little more because it has more/more interesting weapons. The Revive only comes with the sword and the whip.

Yeah. They're decent kits, the Gouf Custom is older but it's articulation isn't far off from the revive. Gouf Custom has less shoulder movement, I should add, because it has pegs in the arm sockets to support the Gatling Cannon's weight.

This looks just like a bluefin sampling so I'm guessing g she bought it locally at a hobbytown etc. They can have very limited selections and is heavily weighted towards GBF, IBO, G and Wing. So not necessarily a sign of bad taste on her part if this was mostly what they had. Master Gundam and fuunsaiki is a great kit and would be my suggestion.

There's also some chipped paint on two of the leg joints under the skirt that I want to cover over if I have the paint for it.

as for a colour scheme, think of something like this. I'm planning to get some cloth and create a makeshift hood/ poncho as well, but I'll worry about that after the main coat is done.

You really want to use the SC Johnson product sometimes labeled as future, there's a guide on it in the OP or in the guide in the OP. It's good to airbrush it, or you can brush it on.

Also I shouldn't say this but you can totally dunk pieces and shake them off very hard before you leave them to dry and it is indistinguishable from an airbrushed finish. The problem is you will fuck up the tolerances on the pegs and holes of your parts if you do this, but if you can make it work it is a great solution. If I were you I would try brushing it on the exterior surfaces very heavily and then shaking it hard to get all of the excess off. That way you don't get any on the connecting pieces.

This kit looks amazing and the parts separation was nice. The gluing wasn't hard either. Much bigger than I thought it would be too.

That being said, whoever designed the joints should be fired. I know Volks isn't Bandai, but I've seen better joint engineering in my old 90s Wing kits.

I've been wanting to start a project like this for a while now, but I can't figure out which GM or whatever to use as a base. I'd prefer 1/100 since I'm a 1/100 fag but I need help deciding what would be good to use. I'll probably just do a recolour rather than actual kitbash or anything to make it look exactly like the picture (like how his head is EZ-8's but none of his body is) though I might use the beam rifle from the Hanger set for the FAG ver ka since it looks like it'll fit and I was thinking of buying it.

Outside the upper torso, the GM Quel would be a good start, that or the GM Custom. The legs are almost identical, the arms and shoulders need some tweaking. The head is close enough. The upper torso is the biggest problem as I can't think of anything.

They are pretty good. Take a minute to get used to just cause its a bit different from gunpla engineering. Be prepared to do alot of painting though. I did a gunsniper and all the guns you see on the back had to be painted.
