Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Does anybody have experience with Frame Arms kits? They look neat.

So I have this gas mask filter that I opened from the packaging about a year ago, but barely really used and left it stored in a box somewhere.

Is that thing still safe to use or should I get a new one?

I was looking at the MG FA thunderbolt and psycho zaku, and the trash bags on the articulations seem really weird. they don't look rubbery enough
any ideas on substitute materials for that kind of stuff?

one thing is to airbrush with an expired filter, another thing is to airbrush without any sort of protection.

i use a cheap simple mask for sanding and hand painting and go full bane mode for airbrushing.

It's the Max Factory kit that came out like two years ago. It's got a few flaws due to it being Good Smile's first kit (I think) but it's alright for a ~$30ish kit. I wouldn't go near it at the $60ish price it's going for on the aftermarket.

depends on what you're spraying. Spray booth or those cheap dust masks may be ok with acrylics but I wouldn't risk it withenamels or lacquer.

I somehow built the RG Zeta as one of my first kits, in a hotel room. I think I had scissors or nail clippers or something for the parts too small to twist off. Needless to say it's not my proudest kit, and I don't like looking at it directly for too long, but I'm amazed it still holds together despite the hand grenade claims.

The MG Unicorn versions doesnt have the added detail on the inside of the 4 connectors ontop, or the little circle on the side, and there isnt a grey piece at the bottom.

I actually think it's a good thing the Gundam is on the generic side, that way it can serve as a good existing base for Custom Gundams.
He is a bit on the lanky side though...

Ironically, while I got it for the fuck hueg Beam Gatlings, posing with them in hand in now the weakest point of the kit for me.
Maybe I just suck at posing, but I'm having trouble getting it IN the hand and looking like it's actually being aimed at something.

Well the Leopard does require it's iconic beam gatling to fold over the left arm, which is kinda a pain in the ass engineering wise for an HG...

Probably going to get the Airmaster to go with it though.

Just did an oil wash on my kit but put on a gloss top coat before hand to protect the plastic.

This is the second time I've snapped this piece. It's my first time trying enamel wash for a grime effect, does enamel paint/thinner usually eat through plastic badly? Really bums me out but I don't think I can justify paying for a third Lupus just for that specific part.

Char's Zaku gets reprinted all the time, Sniper a little less. Sinaju Ver, Ka rarely since there's the superior OVA version, you could buy the Sinaju decals for the same effect though

I'd go with the 7 Swords, mainly because of the price difference. The 00 Raiser is overpriced because it comes with LEDs and pink effect parts, which you will likely never use. You can't mount all the weapons on it either.

7 swords is better bang for your buck and just a better design in general, my only gripe is that it doesn't come with white knee parts to make the normal 00.

Yes, enamel paint thinner is very bad for plastics. I've seen it melt plastic minis into goopy too messes. Never use enamel thinner on bare plastic

My first MG was the Zeta Plus C1, which also transforms. It was the goddamn worst. I ended up super gluing parts of the chest and just about the entire crotch together so it would stay in one piece.

That being said, it's a gorgeous model and I'd love to go back and revisit it and do it better one day.

Not what I was even talking about. The design of the joints, particularly the polycaps, suck. The whole kit is a floppy mess. Most of the polycaps jiggle around like crazy because you can't glue them on. And many of them can't support the weight. I had to tighten a bunch of them with filler paper and it only kind of works.

Worst offender pic related- it's a single polycap piece with no normal plastic part surrounding it, and it's somehow supposed to support the entire massive shoulder and arm assembly? The funniest thing was that the joint itself was torn before I even put on the arms. And since it's polycap material glue and cement won't work on it. It can still support the weight, but that entire area is floppy as hell.

How is that to airbrush? Does it clog your airbrush? Also how do you thin yours?

I've been using Vallejo primer and I find that it covers well, but it orange peels pretty easily, even with extra thinner and low psi settings.

I figured an artillery unit could use a spotter, so I decided to paint up the Mobile worker that came with the cannons and painted it up. Added an antenna in place of the peg thing that was on top of it prior too.

They are the best though, I looked at some of the Wave kits and those are unquestionably hot garbage. The molding and parts separation and details on the Volks kit was incredible, easily Bandai-level. But the engineering of the actual kit was not up to par. It's really strange, considering Volks has been making plastic models for like ten years now. I'm assuming it's because it's a smaller scale than their usual 1/100 line so they didn't make it as carefully, but I don't own any of the 1/100 kits so I don't know if that's true.

I have quite a few Koto kits, like their old SRW ones, and I can say those are much worse kits than this one. Even modern Koto kits have a lot of problems, other than their awesome HMM Zoids.

Bandai is still the king of mecha plamo. I want that R3 L-Gaim so bad but not at scalper prices.

RG Zeta is probably a more complex kit than the FSS ones, but since it's snapfit and everything fits where it's supposed, the construction is much easier. If the FSS kits were snapfit with joints that actually worked, they would not be much more complex than an MG Wing kit to put together.

I don't have that kit but if it's anything like the 1/100 there will be a lot of fitment issues and stress marks. I would recommend you test out the joints before fulling locking them into place because Koto kits can sometimes have joints that are so tight the peg snaps off. It's terrifying.

but the 1/144 Riese is fucking awesome, if anything, the only glaring issue are the large seam for the revolver bunker and the lack of paint for the fins in the shoulders

ealier releases were brittle and had lots of fitting issues, but since then, their quality is up to any of bandai's modern gunpla standards

Most of that markup comes from paint, since Tamiya and Mr Surfacer are expensive as fuck on Amazon.

Also I bought some Revoltech toys while I was there and it would have been double the price to pick them up in the States. It's pretty ridiculous.

Things would be cheaper if Bamco opened up official distribution through foreign webstores with warehouses in the countries. The only way they'd do it is if there was a big enough market and there just isn't one.

It's a lot until you look at the price for a recent Koto kit of the same size. The kit on the right will cost you 6500 yen. The A-toll is 300 yen more and has a lot more going on.

Anything being made in China is much more expensive than before nowadays.
