***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on November 7tht, lets gunpla!

Used for painting. best to empty out a little bit of paint in a dish and use a fine brush to paint small details. Don't just use the pens to glob on paint.

Kotobukiya has been stepping it up for like three years. I worry that at this point they might actually be getting too ambitious.

>>14873765

M.S.G. weapons are in that weird range where they're oversized for 1/144 but slightly small for 1/100. But some work for either.
>>
>>14873679
Yes. They're quite thin so make sure the surface is sanded at the very least, else the paint won't stick. Paint several thin coats rather than one thick one, etc

>>
>>14873743
Beam sabers do look suitable though? If not you can always customize the saber itself. Larger blade, different color, gradient effect, cool handle. If you want a cool beam saber and don't find the base one to work then change it up. Besides, if beam savers are around and beams revolutionize UC warfare there's no reason for a Jim to use a standard melee weapon. Do as you like ultimately but take it as an opportunity to further yourself if you can.

>>

IBO HGS and 1/100 are like the missing link between HG and MGs. They're like MG-lites since they have an inner frame but are still like HGs in terms of color separation and stickers.

I prefer the IBO 1/100s so I'll be getting it and the Vidar as well, but if you build any of them then you've basically built them all. I asked in the other thread and got ignored:

I bought a couple of sets of gundam markers for like 2900 yen (still waiting for their arrival). A set of Pour Type, a set of Metallic, and a set of Ultra Fine/Detailing markers.

>>
>>14873607
thanks
>>
>>14875087

They're good if you're just building the kit without painting, outside of that they aren't much use. I would avoid metallic paints in general, they just use flakes and don't look great at the small scale of gunpla.

For the paint style pens I would still use a small brush to paint details because the paint can come out at different rates, but you also need some lacquer thinner to clean the brush. Basically you just push the tip against a piece of paper and get a little pool of paint. You can try to use them as pens but be very careful.

but I think the pink paint pen is still great for monoeyes

>people who say airbrushing is too expensive but keep buying kit after kit
>>
>>14875095
I don't really do much painting beyond panel lining (yet), so I got the ones I did because I wanted to get a little more detail on my models, especially on some of the IBO kits where certain parts are lacking color (like the FUCKING GUSION REBAKE'S FUCKING SHIELD REEEEEEE) or where the stickers just look like shit. I also thought the Metallics would give some parts a little more pop, like on weapons, v-fins, hydraulics, ect. Sucks about the flakes though, I guess I'll have to deal with it and see how it works out since they're already on their way.

The Pour types I mainly bought out of curiosity. I've already got a set of Tamiya's Panel Line Accent Colors, so I didn't really need them at all. The color range is nice to have though.
>>
>>14875138

I think the metallics are good for things like under exia/00's clear parts where you can use silver the green part to make it look a little nicer, or on eyes

If you are doing Rebake's shield it's going to be tough with pens (and in general) because the surfaces that need white are large, and the thruster parts are very steep. I would definitely use a brush to do the thrusters.

In general masking tape is a good idea that will get you comfy with using it and save you the huge headache of errors. The lacquer paints in those pens are strong and not super easy to clean off bare plastic without other materials, so better to mask and be safe.

For flat detail areas, try using the surrounding part of the sticker sheet to mask.
>>
>>14874773
I think you're supposed to buff it with some sort of polishing cloth.
>>
>>14875159
>not super easy to clean off
I have no experience with the other ones, but the metallics come off with some rubbing alcohol and patience.
>>
>>14875167
really? it came out fine without any buffing the first time when i sprayed on a few other pieces too.
but after inspecting the bottle, the silver particles seem to have sunk to the bottom and got stuck there. i think that might be the problem

There's NO way to fix white plastic, right? You need to mask every single tiny bit of white plastic on a model before you even CONSIDER painting the model because if even if you diluted paint to one part per million, that paint would stain the white plastic within milliseconds of touching it and forever be embedded in the plastic, right? There is *NOTHING* in this world that can remove paint from white plastic.

People need to stop recommending Xurons. Xuron blows.410, 2175ET, they all blow. Just get Tamiyas.

>here's me saying they blow, case closed
>>
>>14876579

OK what are they better for really? What are the 2175ET better than Tamiya hobby nippers for, in regards to cutting plastic model parts off runners?

Tamiyas have a smaller size instead of the huge, ungainly, hyperextending Xurons. They cut much, much cleaner while 2175ETs cut only slightly better than 410s and are still more or less chopping through the plastic instead of delivering a clean slice.

THEY
BLOW
>>
>>14873752
When the hell is Bandai going to get it into their heads that the System Weapons series and add-on Builders Parts series were great ideas?

The option gits for GBF already sold fairly well if it was associated with a good design (they should fire the idiot who released the Jigen Haoh knuckles or Amazing Red Warrior kits; nobody wants $8 bullshit without any guns).

>>
>>14876590

Even though the blades of the 2175 are bigger (longer) the sides of the blades are thinner, so they are actually easier to get into tight gaps like on the BB senshi gates. They also pit plastic way less often than the tamiyas because they slide instead of pinch, they are more comfortable because of the spring mechanism, they are better for modifying kits because of the larger blades, the mechanism is aluminum so it doesn't rust. They are much better for any kind of plastic work that isn't tier 0 babby shit, and they work fine for that also.

Tamiya's are fine too, but you are pretending these cutters are insanely different, when they're both fine options anyone competent can use to get good results. Sorry if you are shit at cutting parts out I guess.
>>
>>14876590
>>14876626

The nippers to avoid are the Mr. Hobby nippers, they are surprisingly shit. Literally just a bad tamiya knockoff.
>>
>>14875627

>>
>>14876626

You are so full of shit.

>Even though the blades of the 2175 are bigger (longer) the sides of the blades are thinner, so they are actually easier to get into tight gaps like on the BB senshi gates.

The Tamiyas have a shorter cutting blade, and are more maneuverable, so they can get into those same areas. Where is the 2 mm space between a sprue and the part where you're going to be able to slide the absolute tip of Xurons but not Tamiyas? Doesn't exist.

>They also pit plastic way less often than the tamiyas because they slide instead of pinch,

Tamiyas pit less because they actually fucking cut.

>they are more comfortable because of the spring mechanism

First off the spring on a Xuron 2175ET is so weak it barely matters, second the Tamiyas are still more comfortable due to their small, light size.

>they are better for modifying kits because of the larger blades,

What does that even mean? Are you actually removing plastic with your flush cutter instead of using it to cut pieces off the runner so you can modify it with... hmmmmm... HOBBY KNIVES? Are you some esoteric fuck who builds the entire kit with nippers only?

>the mechanism is aluminum so it doesn't rust.

Why would this matter unless you're a teenage mutant ninja turtle and you're building in a dank sewer?

>They are much better for any kind of plastic work that isn't tier 0 babby shit

How does that make sense when in the very first line of your post you say they're good for "BB Senshi kits?" Is that not babby tier? I suppose BB Senshi kits are only for the highest masters of the plamo arts.

Get fucked Xuron shill. Literally the only reason to get a Xuron is they're cheap, but Tamiyas are straight up superior as a plamo product and worth that extra 10 bucks. Nippers are a tool for one thing, smoothly slicing parts off runners, and Tamiya's nippers excel at that, while Xurons don't.

>>14876654

I agree, they are way overpriced junk.
>>
>>14876665

So why doesn't Bandai listen to the consumer? If I was in charge of marketing, I'd launch a big voting campaign. Every new kit comes with a piece of paper with a code on it (which would cost fractions of a penny.) Once you have a code from buying a kit (therefore proving you support the company and are likely to buy more kits) you can go to a website that has EVERY mobile suit in EVERY customization, organized by show/manga/game. You select the suit (in whatever custom theme you like, if applicable)
Then at the start of every new production cycle, we look at the results. If a suit with NO models is really popular, give it a HG. If a HG suit is popular, give it a MG. MG suit? PG. PG? Give it a unique finish. P-Bandai? Reprint it, maybe even make it a regular HG/MG.
Maybe there's a problem with my methodology but what I'm really getting at is; Pale Rider reprint when?

From what I understand, the standard philosophy is that the company is always right and the consumers are dumb shits who don't know what they want.
>>
>>14876869
I mean I sort of understand it, but imagine the sheer amount of extra revenue it'd bring in. Not only do you know EXACTLY what your consumers want instead of having to guess or pay for market research (your customers are literally paying you for market research!) I also imagine that it'd drive up sales as people say "Hey, I'd better buy FIVE kits instead of three so I can vote two more times. Those two extra votes'll help secure a place for my favorite mobile suit"

Mineshima's cutters are the next best thing to Gundamplanet cutters, and are on the price range of the aforementioned cutters too. Also fairly thin and fairly flat, nearly approaching GodHand-style.

The ear insert is an old ear pud cut down to size.

build some hydralics into where the leg connects to the foot, and at the top where it would connect with the armor.
Maybe some armor built from the bottom up, but then stopping so you get more shape into the foot, but looking more like destroyed armor rather than an improvised leg?

Okay fags tell me, Gouf revive or gouf prototype and why?
>>

They are both really nice. Revive is just the classic design executed very well. Prototype comes with lots of detail stickers and the design of the weapons is neat and fresh. The Revive's shade of blue is soooooooooo fucking nice, pictures don't do it justice.
>>

>>14877515
The manual has some shit of like taping two small pieces of tape on the sides so that you can direct apply. This shit is way to time consuming in finicky, just take one piece of clear tape, pick up the cut-out of the dry transfer with the sticky part and then slowly apply the sticky side to the gunpla, taking your time to get the spot right, then just take something hard a rub it on. Carefully remove the tape about halfway and if some part of the dry transfer didn't come off, slowly put the piece of tape back down and repeat the rubbing.

Dry Transfers are horrible to apply on curved surfaces because of how stiff the wax sheet is

I'm worried about the residue from clear tape when I do this. I use low-tack tamiya masking tape to avoid that, but that leads to alignment problems.

It's like an RG but bigger, thus making it easier.

It's got no core fighter so it has the best articulation.

Basically there's no flaws.

I've built the Mk-II. It's kinda pricy compared to the other kits but it's pretty sturdy.
Requires a screwdriver, some time and hard work.
All of its outer shell is undergated so it doesn't require a coat of paint to look nice.

Plastic fag here. Polycarbonate have little or no chemical resistance but tend to have high impact strength. Exposing polycarbonate to oils, chemicals or paints cause them to become brittle and basically crumble to pieces. It would seem that any paint made for polycarbonate would be just as safe for any other plastic and just mildly etch.
