***READ THE GUIDE***

DO NOT REPLY TO SHITPOST-KUN POSTS
DO NOT POST IN SHITPOST-KUN THREADS
DO NOT BE A NEEDY TRIPFAGGOT

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I have a bottle of Tamiya enamel that dried out leaving just a thick deposit at the bottom. Can I turn it into liquid again for hand painting using lighter fluid?
I know people used lighter fluid to thin enamel for panel washing, but what about using lighter fluid instead of proper enamel thinner for painting?

I fucked up the stickers on this side, since I'm feeling under the weather, but the detail on this kit is great.
>>
>>14855265

the idea behind using lighter fluid for enamel washes is partially that it is a less "harsh" solvent than a regular thinner, so there's less of a risk of it eating through your gloss. It should not be taken as a pure replacement for enamel thinner, and your use is an example of one where an enamel thinner would be much better to use.

Apparently the epoxy putty on the axe was messed up so I basically had to redo everything, but it's fine now. I did a primer check after sanding and the blade shape is pretty good for the first test. Right now I'm pretty much focusing on getting the edge right, like how far the cutting edge cuts back into the body etc. I added some material to the top of the horizontal part because I think I will need to bevel the edges and maybe even add some tiers to be more interesting looking.

I also was working on another project and had some silver left in the brush so I wanted to see how that would look on the edge. I think still want to do heat style though.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

The final date for entries has been extended to November 7th! Let's Gunpla!

To me, being a true gunpla builder is to build as many kits as possible, so when my friends come over I can show them my collection so they can remain largely unimpressed.

I was bored and decided to calculate exactly how much Snapshit has snapshited over the last year and a half on and got this. Prices are from Amazon except for P-Bandai exclusives where I went to ebay for, since I doubt he knows how to buy from Amiami/HLJ/the rest. This doesn't include cost for shipping though, so that could easily be another $200 or so.

You guys are all so stupid you don't realize that if you reply to snapshit even to insult him or even talk about him, that's what he wants. It's all about attention and you all take the bait 24/7. Eventually he'll become practically an institution like all the faggots of legend on other boards.

One has to wonder how much of this thread is just him samefagging. I would like to think it's everybody, because the thought that all these people are legitimately still biting the bait after a literal year of this is just too much. I wish Jacky Chan would institute forced thread tripcodes like on /pol/ on every board so we could be free of this bullshit.

From now on there should just be a gentleman's agreement on /m/ to never talk to, or about, or to anybody talking about, snapshit. Just don't do it. Don't even correct people who do. Ignore it 100% and keep bugging mods to end it once and for all.

Looking at that, it has less to do with skill and more just patience. It is well done but you just go over the edges and contours with a sharpie or something and you get the same result.
>>
>>14856853

Why not try sticking the Schwalbe Graze boosters on the hips?
>>
>>14856912
Sure ill give that a shot
>>
>>14856910
It really isn't as simple as that. He painted not just the outlines, but each individual reflection, each gradient, and there are multiple levels of different shades of grey applied to each part to give it a line art appearance. Just going over the edges with a sharpie won't give you even close to the same result, especially as sharpie ink tends to bleed into the plastic and paint over time which blurs the edges.
>>
>>14856910
>>14856923

To expand further, the technique is known as "Non-metallic Metals", or at least he's using something very similar to that.

It's a miniature figure painting technique for painting metallic parts without actually using any metallic paints.

Is there a difference between clear coat and top coat? Cause I can't seem to find anything on it in the guide
>>
>>14856954

They are the same thing. Topcoats are a clear coat that goes on top unless it's a gloss coat for panel washing.
>>
>>14856954
there are various shinynesses of coats like gloss, semi-gloss, matte etc
>>
>>14856954
Different names for the same thing. It's mostly gunpla hobbyists who refer to it as "Top coat" because they're usually just spraying a matte coat on top at the end instead of multiple layers of gloss and satin between steps.
>>
>>14856958
>>14856961
>>14856963
Ah, okay. I got a bit confused with Tamiya's spray can numbering, cause they have matte, gloss, and semi-gloss top coats as loke colour 123-125 or something like that, but then they also have something just labelled "clear coat" at like 50 something between a bunch of colours.

Either way that means if I want to panel line a kit after painting it I can just apply any top coat after it's painted, line it, and then add a final layer of top coat?
>>
>>14856983

If you're going to panel line you need to use gloss. When it's done being painted, gloss coated, and lined, you can then finish with a topcoat of clear, semigloss, or matte depending on the final look you want. Usually you want matte.

I love them, but they've kind of ruined the MG line desu.

Ver.Ka's are of such high quality that the expectations people have for MG's as a whole have been raised, such that it's hard to get an MG made that isn't a gundam. I mean, the last non-Gundam MG was the Sazabi Ver. Ka in 2013, and even then, that was a Ver. Ka kit.

Although, perhaps I'm over blowing this a bit, since a lot of potential MG's for IBO were instead NG.

However, we are getting a GM Sniper II MG next year, so I hope that does well enough that we get more grunt/non-gundam MG's.

I also hope this GM Sniper II means we might get a Kampfer/Alex 2.0 soon too.

I don't think so, but I love the shotgun too, and the fact that you can swap out the stocks on each one so you can get the "sawed-off" look. The little flap on the top is really fragile though, they're on a hinge, and that hinge broke on both shotguns for me. I can still move them, but I have to be very careful.

I didn't get the 1/144 because barely any of the yellow thrusters are parts separated, so unless you have paint (I don't) or don't care about that, the kit doesn't look very good. It does have shotguns though.

Honestly, the MG is so old (2000-2001) that the HGUC (2008 I think) rivals and surpasses the MG in terms of poseability while also being less flimsy (the MG is saved by having so much mass in the lower legs and feet that it avoids the issues of many contemporary MG kits). If the HG Kampfer had better parts separation, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

If you're willing to put some extra work tightening joints, modifying pegs and peg holes, properly aligning, etc, then there's nothing wrong with bootlegs other than the morality or supporting what are technically "thieves".

To be completely honest, it would be worth getting a bootleg, especially a considerably bad one, if you plan on going up to working on scratch builds and resin since theyre cheap enough that fucking it up isnt such a big wallet hit and it'll teach you some more advanced tactics on working with the medium.

Same shit that happened with the Gusion Rebake from season 1. They go and put a ton of effort into the majority of the kits... but the Gusion Rebake gets the cheapest build of a figure and stickered to hell.

Nobody really cares if you're a snapfag or not.
I myself am barely above snapfagging and had posted my shit before on both /m/ and /toy/ and gotten little to no flak, even got some advice to improve.

He has a trip so you fucks (my lovely dears) can fucking filter him. His "problem" being, whatever point he tries to make and bait with, is that he keeps getting replies. He has made it clear he does not want to improve and is clearly baiting. Why give him (You)s?

Seconded, as soon as I can get the proper supplies to do so.

On a related note, two questions for you guys;
1. Is there a Dom kit that has legs usable on the HG Zaku II F2?
2. If I wanted to, say, give my model hair like an afro or something for kicks and giggles, what'd be the best way to go about it?
>>
>>14859188
>afro
just stick a ball of putty on its head and carve detail into it.
>>
>>14859149

This is why I always liked to just try making my own changes to kits rather than doing kit bashes. Custom stuff requires more up front investment but I think kit bashes are much more expensive than people realize
>>
>>14859188
1. As long as the F2 uses ball joints, most likely.
2. Probably some kind of foam, like the kind on a mic boom for an afro.

I think would be much easier to make a ball of epoxy putty, then make numerous small balls, cut them in half and place them around the top like the bumps in >>14859194

I'd let that dry then use more thinned out putty to fill in all the gaps between the bumps to get to the shape you want. I think that would be a lot easier than carving an afro. Carving is in general much harder than building with soft materials that harden.

I might spend a semester in Beijing next year, is it a good place to find gunpla? Or am I better off planning a trip to Hong Kong?

The shit storm continues, anon suggested schwalbe hip booster. I went a little nuts, but I'm liking it, remove the brown of the gusion and add standard gundam colours maybe

I think you should keep the Astaroth legs but change the feet.

I'm just saying the original unveiling samples were painted purple because that is the color it was supposed to be, then the kit was printed in a different color

Beijingner here, i know two gunpla heavens where you can get them cheap, one is some sort of weeabo floor on a gallery like shopping nearby city center, horrible service and cringe people, another one is a garage-like shop at west area by a hueg /m/ weeabo, not expensive too and has a few buried treasures like old Gundam Victory series models.

Since i live close to center and i hate interacting with live weeabos i order my gunplas from taobao and pretend that the rest of /m/ are chipmunks not humans
>>
>>14859660
My chinese is still pure shit, so I can't really navigate taobao. Is there good prices on it?
>>
>>14859634
Show me, anon.
>>
>>14859664

usually the same as those two places i listed above, why would you go to beijing if you cannot into mandarin?

there are also gunplas at kids area in the big malls but the prices are jacked up to p-bandai store rates.

I'm looking to turn the HG version of this sword on the left into this sword on the right.
I've never done custom work or scratchbuilding, so I'm wondering how to go about this. Would it just be putty work and molding/sanding it into the shape I needed? Would I have to strip the chrome paint off the original sword before priming?
>>
>>14859645

Don't buy the sword on the left, it's not similar enough if you are really trying to make a monado, so why do you need it?

What tools and supplies for this do you have
>>
>>14859762

Glad I bought a pinvise, it's such an useful tool. Now I can mount HGUC Ex-s to action base and customizing stuff.
>>
>>14859776
>>14859778
Nothing yet. I'm doing my research before hand. The only other similar sword I could find is the red katana in the Astaroth Origin kit.
>>
>>14859758
Almost never as every guncannon I see is being used right in the think of the fight, but then again, its not like the guntank was ever actually used for artillery purposes either.

PS
I adore both the guntank and guncannon and giving that a sniper rifle isn't a bad idea, I just couldn't resist that dank meme.

I mean are you trying to make the monado, or something that just kind of looks like the monado, because you don't want to order any expensive premade thing if you are trying to make something that is completely different
>>

>>14859841
If I'm going about this all wrong, can you point me in the right direction? I always assumed you worked off an existing weapon to make a custom.
>>
>>14859891
It's the sword that comes with the PG Strike Gundam.
>>
>>14859807
That looks pretty good now
>>
>>14859818
not him, but pretty sure it's a gm type c (could also just translate the japanese in the corner)
>>
>>14859897
For weapons and simple stuff, it's often just scratch built with plaplate and epoxy putty
>>
>>14859951
Ah, so I could easily just make a rough form with plaplate and add the larger body with the putty?
>>
>>14859955
Pretty much
>>
>>14859955

yeah, you need to start smaller, scratch is a serious learning process you don't just pick anything you like and wham you can just make it, it's the kind of thing that sounds much easier than it is.
>>
>>14859968
>>14859957
so basic tools are styrene, epoxy putty, hobby knife, sanding paper, what else am I missing?
I need the liquid cement for my adhesive, right?
>>
>>14859974
Super glue is easier for plain styrene
>>
>>14859978

I can tell you don't do this often
>>
>>14859974

you need liquid cement because super glue dries harder than styrene, and will sand unevenly
>>
>>14859986
Thanks!
>>
>>14859983
>>14859986
For scratch building, I usually end up using a file, so I don't usually notice a difference when sanding super glue vs plastic cement
>>
>>14859997

the main advantage of superglue is that it's good at putting together things that normally don't like to, but styrene doesn't have that problem at all

what advantage does superglue offer over something like plastruct bondene which meld styrene in seconds
>>
>>14860004
I find that dries faster, but that's basically it. It's probably just best to go with plastic cement like you suggested

This isn't always like with traditional model kits where they gouge you with all manner of metal parts, photo etch and little bits to make a crappily molded kit reasonable.
