For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, lets gunpla!

Fuck, I made the subject my name. Apologies, everyone.

who here has made the Sazabi ver ka?

i always get the impression its flashy and complicated and I feel intimidated

I have it, great kit. Don't feel intimidated, it was my 2nd MG and it's a fun (but long) build.

how can you be intimidated by a snap together kit that fits perfectly and gives you complete instructions step by step in order

Sure. I'm still kinda new at the whole scratchbuilding thing myself too. I've done a few weapons and a backpack, but I'm still not up to par for making a whole arm or something

Hey hey, that looks alright.
How was the process for you? Lot of trial and error, I'm assuming. Got any shit weapons to show that helped you to get better?

The original idea was a sort of heat sword thing made from one of the blades from the Amazing Red Warrior, a piece of the MG Aile Strike's backpack, and a spare 1/144 handle (Think it was a bazooka, it's been a few months). I decided not to use it for this since the build evolved into a more ranged support unit, and I figured physical melee weapons fit Zeek shit better than a GM.

Have a before shot

It helps to have been building kits for several years now, so you've got a lot of old junked kits from the early years that you're trying to salvage (Most of them are SEED hand-me-downs from my older brother who wasn't all that great at building, but you'll eventually have a few spare rifles or beam sabers lying around.

As for the process it's really just throwing things together trying to see what works. in the case of that heat sword it was just a stroke of luck when that red piece fit in fairly easily.

Just gluing stuff together works, really. This rifle for example is just the EZSR shoulder cannon with the joint removed, and one of the EZSR arm guards and a beam saber glued to it. Although, I kinda stole this idea from that guy on /toy/ who made that Grimoire with the light-up head.
>>
>>14860115
That's fucking great.

So after seeing the jazzed-up G-Self from yesterday I feel like taking apart my Gyancelot-in-progress and at least spraying the relevant sections gold, because the stickers are rubbish.

The arm guard makes it. It's also painted pretty nicely.
>>
>>14860171
I've never scratch built anything before, but I do have some tools for messing with sintra, just not plaplate. I'm more concerned with a base, do they even make HG Maxters anymore? Or would the Maxter be too different to work as a base?
>>
>>14860195
>do they even make HG Maxters anymore?
They never did.
>>
>>14860165

I mean don't let this stop you, but this is far beyond your abilities and it would take years to get good enough to do this

so get going on that or just do something else
>>
>>14860195

Honestly this should be doable, but you're going to need some non-Gundam things. Go to a toy store and find a pair of cheap plactic pop guns to cut apart for the shoulders, maybe a cheap cowboy action figure for the hat. Scale is going to be the bitch, you're going to need to either carry some of the parts with you to check before you buy or else have the measurements on hand to compare.

Then it's a matter of figuring out how close the rest of it is to Maxter, or if you'll need another kit to approximate the limbs.
>>
>>14860195
>>14860205

how can you people hope to build something like this when you can't even tell how different every single piece is from the suit it just happens to look somewhat like

seriously you guys would look at a skyscraper and be like "it's just a big box how hard could it be"
>>
>>14860213

>>
>>14860213

i'm at last year for my architects diploma, and yes, i happens to look at skyscrapers and be like, its just a big box, how hard could it be

regard hg maxter, might be promising to dig up some AGE-1 Titus shoulder or just get the old maxter kit and retrofit it

>>14860213

Because you CAN sort of approximate, that's the point of scratch build. It doesn't have to be absolutely perfect, you can find the best equivalent and make up the difference with putty and paint. If you're really good you can build from plamo plates.

The point is you have to try.

Here, this was my first kit bash, putting the Master Gundam together with the Titus from AGE. It seemed like a simple idea, but the shoulder joints were completely different and needed heavy re-engineering to fit. It can be done.

Gunpla is freedom.

Those arent bad, but I would get like a little tray ( I use a round paint dish) and get a little bit of that paint on there and use a fine tip brush. A lot of guys I know use the citadel layer brush, or if you want to go crazy, use the citadel artificer brush to paint those fine details. I feel like I'd be a legit waste of a P-Bandai kit if I ever got my hands on one. I only ever go as far as nub removal.

I fucking wish Bandai would put the Pale Rider into HGUC normal circulation so I could just butcher one already for one as a toy and another as a wall-poser.

>>
>>14863397

A lot. And some of them are frail stickers, as in the coloring scratches off easily so you have to baby them. And then there are parts where they could have made a sticker for them but didn't, like the shoulder vents. So it actually doesn't have enough stickers.

>>
>>14865539

Citadel primer is expensive and not very well liked in general. Tamiya fine surface primer is great stuff if you can find it. Are you in the UK judging by what you're using?

I think you are not waiting nearly long enough between coats

Enamel have stronger solvents and can dissolve coats below that haven't cured, much less fully dried.

By not waiting you've now created much more work for yourself unfortunately
>>
>>14865572

Also because enamels are oil based, they stay wet longer. Then you sprayed a lacquer spray can over the top, which has even stronger solvents

Your tamiya spray has reacted with your enamel white because it wasn't dry enough to not get dissolved by the solvents in the lacquer spray.

If you don't know what type of paints you are using or how they will interact, you need to let the preceding coat dry much longer. You can spray paints in nearly any order you want IF you let the first coat CURE.

Bandai has a patent on 4 color injection runners. This automatically reduces cost significantly both in terms of # of runners, # of molds, # of plastic used, depth of packaging used.

Also Gundam has a lower license royalty rate since Sunrise is a sister company to Bandai.

Spray in your bathroom, but make sure to wear a painter's mask.
Let the kit sit in there maybe 30 minutes to dry before moving it to another room. Have the vent running during the process, but once the kit is out, just run your hot shower for about 10 minutes with the vent. The steam should cause the fumes to rise and leave through the vent. I do it when it's too hot outside.

I think the new IBO gundams have some gimmick we haven't seen yet.

Looking at
>the side pods/scabards, feet, and backpack of the Vidar and
>the backpack and arm guards of the Flauros, and >the parts of both the Full City and the Lupus

The armor is going to combine or transform or something.

I feel like something is going to have a flight mode because of the vidar's part design, I think the blades flip forward and the feet spin on the ball and straighten out. Flauros' backpack clearly locks back into a straight up position like you would need for a flight mode.

Because all Bandai's kits are made at home in Japan, whereas almost every other manufacturer makes their kits in China. Right now the Chinese economy is going through a boom so their currency is getting stronger, combined with the fact that the Japanese currency is purposely being deflated by the PM, means that having shit get made in China is hella expensive for Japanese companies these days. Just look at the Robot Spirits line and how its prices have literally doubled the past couple of years.

Going to the page you got that picture from, here is another older Volks kit to the right from 2 years ago- it was also 11,000 yen. But look at how much larger it is. In just a couple years, the price of toys and kits manufactured in China had gone up that much.
>>
>>14866757

The thing is that Mika and Akihiro already have their signature Gundams, Orga is not a fighter, Eugene pilots the boat and doesn't really seem to have an interest in getting in an MS, and everybody else is a literally who.

On top of them pushing it hard that Hush wants to pilot an MS, his inferiority complex and having grand goals and no AV set him up as a counterpart to Mikazuki, so of course he will be the one to pilot the new Gendum, rivalry works better that way and I think Tekkadan needs once since they are actually partnered with the Char of this series now, they can't bash nameless jobber pirates forever, and the Arianrhod Fleet is something that has to be drawn out a little so they won't be dealt with until around ep 12 probably.

I kinda want to talk more about IBO now but just sticking to gunpla, yeah, it's going to be Hush. But I don't give a damn, just give me that 1/100 Vidar.

Being able to work on custom builds again after a year is a treat. The f2000 is such a cool design, but it's such a brick. After doing this testfit, I might go back to using the gouf custom's torso. The f2000's torso is almost comically wide.

Probably won't have it done in time for the group build, but I'd rather take my time with this one than rush and end up with something I'm dissatisfied with.

if you are snapbuilding if you can clean one nub you can build any gunpla kit bandai makes

While not wrong, you can't fault someone for wanting to get fuckups out of the way before moving onto something significantly more expensive.
If he's lucky he'll get all of his "oh that wasn't a nub" moments out of the way now rather than during the sazabi build.
You're absolutely right though, no one should be anxious about building something provided they follow instructions and understand the basic techniques.
Everyone does things in their own time.

I'm really glad I got a cheap kit I didn't care about for my first one so I didn't make that kind of mistake on one I actually like
>>
>>14867051

Then how come so many people have to go back and clean their first kits or are ashamed of how shit they turned out? Could it be that it's not that simple, that there actually is some level of technique so you don't end up with a nubbed up, gouged mess?

Why do you even care?

I'm not even against snapbuilding but I am against this like inflation of the difficulty of snapbuilding. I think some people focus on the "difficulty" of different kits and it artificially keeps people from trying more than snapbuilding because the bar is held so low. Everyone should expect more of themselves in this hobby.

Bandai has made the regular build process so simple and mind numbingly easy it's just a more complicated version of the "fit the peg through the right hole" childs toy. Old kits needed paint, old kits needed glue, came with waterslides, still looked like shit. They have improved the kits but the accepted bare minimum continues to fall to the point where people are intimidated by out of the box builds.

Cleaning nubs and MAYBE lining are the skill ceiling for snapbuilding. What is that? It's like tedious manual labor. Once you start painting or using raw materials you start to take things from your mind and make them by your hands. That's when it becomes a craft.

All of you should be able to build any kit bandai makes out of the box, it's not that fucking hard.
>>
>>14867117

The guy just started out, you are shitting on some guy because he wants to actually get good before tackling a bigger project. Are you a mind reader, you think that he thinks snapbuilding an MG is the hardest shit ever and then he'll just stop after that?

I mean what would you rather do, just start with an MG Sazabi ver. Ka, drop 70 dollars on that and then fuck it up? It's not rocket science but there's more to it than just "hurrr read the manual it's super easy." People have been assembling gunpla for literally decades and no matter how carefully you read the manual the first couple kits are always rough. It's understandable to want to gauge where you are before spending money on a kit that is harder than 10 dollar HGs.

You are the problem with this hobby because you think that guys just starting out should start out with perfect execution and knowledge of every aspect of the hobby and be assembling full dioramas of armor plamo or they're babbys forever.

I mean the project is about utilizing putty properly and there's already a bunch of custom components, so now I"m adjusting larger thrusters to fit in the spot that the smaller ones were in.
Unfortunately my lhs is also out of the primer I was using for this model, so I have to wait before I can make further adjustments.

he's clearly shown that he can build HGs, it's not like he picked the sazabi for the first kit, although typically I worry when people go right to the Sazabi or Nu right off the bat, I feel like you can tell new people are building when you see either of those kits pop up because they google shit like "best gunpla kit" etc. and order it. I'm trying to comment more on the fact that he's still hesitant to attempt it even after doing other kits and reading how to do the simple stuff, that's created by other people in the hobby.

weren't you going for mobility? slap a thunderbolt backpack on it.
>>
>>14866323
neither do I but I'm erect
>>
>>14867576
The backpack is already similar to the thunderbolt one as it has three thrusters on it. I've also added thrusters on the shoulders, and the main thrusters on the legs are from the wings of the physalis. I'm also now replacing two of the smaller thrusters on the backpack with slightly larger ones. I just think I need a fuel container like those found on the zaku II thunderbolt to fuel all of these new additions.

that could work. its profile just looks a little lack luster. something back there would spice it up a bit.
>>
>>14867615
Personally I'm fine and pretty happy with how its profile has turned out thus far. About as happy as I can be, anyways. But I really liked the basic model in the first place.
>>
Is there a place where I can get those smalls 1/100 1/144 pilots?
>>
>>14867618
then you do yoi anon. im sure itll look great after you throw paint on it
>>
>>14867618
There's nothing wrong with a vanilla frame.
>>
>>14867573
>>14867575
I dig it. I love chunky suits with lots of guns so this is already going in the right direction for me. Definitely give it something to hold. What's the point of having shoulder cannons to free up the hands if we don't fill them with more guns.

As for feeling faster, there's always the thunderbolt route of more everything, but then you'll never be able to pose it without needing a stand.
>>
>>14867625
Oh, I'm not saying that, there's some models that I don't think you can improve upon at all outside of detail work, at least designwise. I like the vanilla frame of the GM Cannon II which is why I wanted to make a custom with it.

>>14867630
I think it's mobility will be a non-issue at this point considering what I've added and the slight adjustment on the backpack thrusters. I don't want to overload it with weapons, I feel like the gatling shield would be a detriment if it weren't for the fact that it's a shield and can be ditched when needed, but I did want to somehow add holsters for beam swords, or heat hawks on the sideskirt. I'm just not entirely sure how to go about it.
Adding a pair of heat hawks to the other arm instead of a shield was also something I thought about since there's already a custom GM Cannon II that does it with a neat dazzle camouflage, but I don't have any spare heat hawks.

Panel washing gives me an orgasmic feeling. I love to see a loaded brush spiderweb and form beautiful constellations of black/grey on lined plastic.

Then when I clean it up with a q-tip dampened with enamel thinner I pretty much cum all over it from the sheer beauty of an exquisitely panel-lined kit.

If I cut my nubs or, more like I tear then apart as my nippers are a little bit fat. They have small holes in them. Is this normal?
>>
>>14868386
No
>>
>>14868432
Should I get fkat nippers that can actually snap the parts off? I don't think there are a lot of nippers that are flatter than 2mm
What nippers would you suggest?
>>
>>14868386
Post pictures of the nippers and the holes

Whatever you do, don't buy those excel nippers from Walmart. Mine broke in half in less than twenty kits.

There's a pair or nippers in the guide. Aside from that, anything that says "flush cut" should work, or as a third alternative, something from a modelling brand like Tamiya or whatever your local hobby shop carries
>>
Just started working on the shin matsunaga and Imorty already loving it even though it isn't finished. Are all the zaku II 2.0 kits as good? I've seen chars and the regular zakus 2.0 for around 30 and I'd pick them up if they're good

>>

fuck i forgot to upload the resized pic
>>
>>14868638
I'd say top coat it then do a panel line wash. Other than that it looks decent for your first build from the picture

I think I found the error. The nipper head was just too fat and it pressed against the fat part of the gate if you tried to cut with them. The tamiya ones I ordered are much more flat
