***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, lets gunpla!

aw yea, a thread that isn't shit
>>
so how are vallejo paints? is there a mix chart to get gundam colors like chars red?
>>
So I came across this at gcon I'm not sure how to feel about the color sceme on the one hand it looks neet but doesn't it clash with the sinanju? I'm not really in any place to criticize however as I'm still pretty much just a snapfiter/kit ruiner
>>

>>14772916
the entire convention is a social area you retard. If you didnt want to socialize stay at home
>>
>>14774257
I don't know about mix charts, but I've used Vallejo paints for a while and they're ok. They're a bit too heavily pigmented for thin airbrushes (0.3mm) and cake up the nozzle in seconds unless they're heavily thinned, but the flipside is that you still get a really good coating of pigment when they're thinned right down. They're my paint of choice for handbrushing.

Aw yiss, my Adele and Ballden Arms arrived before I'm due to go to NYCC. Got to work double time to catch up with the Ace Custom.

On which topic, I'm unsure which barrel to use, A or B. A is the one that came with the Amazing Lev, but I think a longer barrel matches the railgun better.

Yeah, the suit is a bash between the G-Bouncer and the Adele with a few small mods here and there. The gun is from the Amazing Lev A, with a few more involved mods to mount it under the arm. Probably going to do a Ground and Space type since I love the G Bouncer's backpack but I want to make use of a Hi-Mock backpack I modded already.
>>
Has anyone built the old g fighter kits that they are rereleasing in a few months?
How much paint will i need. I've learned that older kits aren't great for their color seperation.
>>
Gundam Store Idea guy, posting in this thread because old ded thread is ded.

>>14772909
So perhaps I did not word my prompt correctly.
My intention is not to push, as you say "hardkore REAL Gundam fans want," it's quite the opposite.
I don't want to push the niche kits, I want to push the easy, iconic and "looks good/poses well" kits.
I'm not entirely sure where you got that I wanted to open a store and act like a hipster, no, I want to open a store, make money, and sustain a small community of people who will continue coming back for something to put on there desk every now and then.
And even if it does not succeed, well I learned a valuable lesson for my life going forward.

>>14773125
Interesting ideas, however the store I'm going to be putting the kits into will also be a 40k and Magic shop.
Basically the 40k will cover the tools I could need but the thought was for selling people the complete tool kits with nippers knife and files.
But thank you for the suggested kits, I'll keep those in mind.

>>14773127
Excellent, just the advice/list I needed.
The way I figure there is a market for it is because the anime shop that was in town, and went under due to a spike in rent, sold his kits like hotcakes.
And when he closed and brought his kits over to another they still sold well.
But now that store it's in is going under because of bad business decisions (Flames of War is a horrible game to be overstocked in and not have a community for)

I have confidence that the market is still here, small as it may be.
That being said the investor that I'm talking to will be opening his own store soon, and is willing to pay for my startup, allow me to sell in his store, and hire me to run said store.
So even if I have to eat my stock, I will still keep my day job and work for my investor to recoup losses.
>>
>>14774578
Not yet, the fact that the GM Sniper II got upped from RE 100 to MG gives hope for that entire list to get produced in some way.

No they don't. If you compare the Mk II and the Strike Freedom, or even the Zaku II their frames are completely different. The arm joints are different, with the Strike Freedom have a ball joint at the shoulder where the MK II has a weird saddle joint. And even the way the waist units are connected is completely different, with the Strike Freedom the waist is just two parts slotted into one another and if you aren't careful it can fall off.

If you think about it for a sec, it makes perfect sense considering the Z'Gok should and would be a manufacturing pain in the ass, UC-crazy-technology aside.

I mean, it's a big giant robot that can:
- fire mega particle guns
- is amphibious
- can actually generate enough energy and minovsky particles (big honkin generator) to have a beam weapon
- lots of cooling technology or ballast tanks for water to cool itself with
- fuel and other normal MS logistical gubbins
>freaking torpedos in the head

It does a lot of stuff for one mobile suit.

Theyll probably use the frame for revive ground type, revive blue destiny units unless its naoki design then possible p bandai. Slave wraith and other variants shown in recent games and manga p bandai. Ill be upset if the gm sniper 2 custom gets p bandai white dingos pbandai again its mostly reused parts, They have other types they can p bandai. But this frame can mean cold climate, command ground and space type, the spartan based off the sniper frame, possible pale rider. As someone who did work for multiple conventions, the idea that you're going to break even or even make a profit the first year makes me laugh. People aren't going to throw money at stuff they don't know, especially if there's already an established convention in the market area and the more money you spend to make your convention appealing, the bigger the risk you have to take.

I have not heard about G-Con until reading this thread and from what I gathered, it's the standard 'how hard could it be to run a convention? It can't be that expensive.' mentality that bites a lot of first time conventions in the ass. I mean even with a convention this small in America, renting out proper hotel space is going to cost at least several thousand dollars, and that's not even including the equipment and overhead.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but G-Con was the idea of some guy and this local Jap Importer called Japan Cool was brought in as partner to make it happen and they were way in over their head. Yes, no?
>>
>>14774616
I wasn't expecting the G-Self to rank high.
>>
>>14775347
More like they made a ton of ridiculous promises early on that fell apart over the course of the year and then they banned a bunch of respected people in the UK gunpla community from attending.

It was also Japan Cool itself organizing and throwing the event, not just some guy bringing them in as a sponsor. Look at the previous threads, the convention was a massive flop on all fronts, not just from a financial perspective.

>>
>>14776142
They're not water slide decals?
>>
>>14776147
They're waterslides, but I had trouble with a not insignificant number of them on the Gundam itself. I did what I usually do when applying waterslides and cut out the decal/backing, dip in water, seperate and position with an x-acto then lightly press them with a cotton wool tip to remove the water underneath; only to have them either adhere more to the cotton wool tip or simply just fall off from general handling before I could seal them with a topcoat. Would love to hear from someone else who's built/building it to see if they've had the same problem.

Also, I see what the other anons were saying a few days ago when they said the MG F91 has its problems. Ver.Ka MG kits are when Hajime Katoki is involved in pretty much every step of the kits design process. He does the line art, helps plan out the engineering, the decals, the part separation, included gimmicks, etc.

the RG Z'gok was probably my favorite RG suit to build so far [between it, Quan[T] and the RG zaku that broke a leg hose mount while still on the runner]

The frame is actually quite amazing considering there's no other RG that will ever use that frame, it's impressive they even went through the trouble.

as another anon said though, it does have trouble posing it's arms higher than shoulder height [which is fine, it's unlikely it would be holding it's arms that high anyway unless in a swimming pose.]

>>14776999
I'm just curious man, have you ever been at a starting con in a given area?

Because I'll tell you right now I've been to several start up conventions, and it usually takes 3+ years before a convention even starts to really take off, unless there's a huge marketing push behind it, or it's focused around a specific property that's insanely popular in that given area.

As much as we love Gunpla up in here... Gundam's not hugely popular outside of moonland. No matter how much we wish it was otherwise. So a Gundam/Gunpla centric convention, honestly if they had 50+ people for a first time, then fucking good on them, because I've seen con's start with 15-25 people and be considered a successful "first time convention."

The whole thing was set up so some ripoff artists could sell kits.
They had a thing where they'd sell your kit for you and take a slice, so they're making money off your own work.
No other vendors.

It was a "con" only in the sense that people thought it was going to be a convention and instead they wasted money to travel to, essentially, a single stall selling marked up kits.

People paid an entry free for nothing other than a single stall selling japancool's already overpriced kits. On top of that if anyone else wanted to sell a kit at the con, japancool insisted on taking a cut.

People spent money on travel and accommodation (it was in the middle of nowhere) and got nothing, NOTHING other than one stall ripping them off.

Usually people don't mind paying a little extra at a con because there's a bunch of panels and events and interesting guests, etc.
There wasn't even gundam merch for sale other than kits, ffs. And the "Gundam Cafe" wasn't themed food, it was just sausage and chips and a can of coke. (also overpriced as fuck)

Why did they even advertise it as a Gundam Cafe? Because a fat girl in a shitty Feddie cosplay stood next to it for a few minutes.

I went to NYCC last year. It's fucking hard to get into, but there was some really nice kits on display.

they do this on other kits either hints of up coming suits or just cock teases that may never see light of day. Shin matsunaga (sp?) had Dozle's zaku 2 and a gm sniper custom on the art. One of the hguc f91 kits had crossbone suit on the front etc etc.
>>
>>14779625
All the passes on ebay are scams, they set it up this year so that you had to have an account registered in fucking June before buying a ticket and then assigning every ticket bought to someone who also has to have their own account. Then you have to activate it with said account when the badges arrive and show corresponding photo ID at the door.

Source: I'm going to NYCC. Bought four sets of tickets for me, my wife, a friend and his girl, then his girl leaves him after tickets are paid for. I now have some very expensive bits of plastic with zero use. No refunds, thanks NYCC.

But hey, I'll take pics.

MK-II is the most solid RG I've built so far, I put on most of the decals and so far its lookin fantastic.

Its no wonder I see so many anons recommending it, it is well designed, aside from the shitty peg connection thats mandatory if you want to out it on an action base.

Also, just curious if any anons try to put on all the stickers or just put on enough til they feel satisfied? I tend to ignore the tiny square stickers as they tend to be troublesome and tiny.

I have the RG GP01 (I think the Full Burnern is a downgrade in every way that's different) and while I think it does use the Mk.II's frame for the most part the whole chest section is different because of the core fighter. It is less sturdy, but by no means a hand grenade like the Zeta. The only thing I can't account for is the added weight of the FB backpack, as that might compound problems with the torso (which is basically a top half and bottom half plugged on either side of the Core Fighter).

You can buy the Revive RX-78-2 and a Graze(any variant). Graze is basically a monoeye and if you put together a Graze it basically gives you an idea of what every single IBO kit is like. It's also cheap.

Those two kits will give you a good grasp on "modern gunpla" and they're only slightly over 20 bucks and then you can decide if you want to invest further in this hobby.

It's a floppy mess.

An actual plastic hand grenade would be something like the RX-78-2, where things fly off and fall apart. If anything, the Zeta just has floppy skirts and leg connections, which can be summed up as weak. However, everything stays on the model, nothing comes off.

You could always try ordering from Gundamhobby.ca though, 17$ flat shipping rate all across the provinces and their prices aren't super inflated compared to a lot of other sites. RG Sinanju for instance is a whole 7$ cheaper than whichever store price you listed.

For all it's problems, I love this kit. It looks really nice with some paint.

Also best girl.

personally I go for no sticker-decals.

mostly because they start looking shitty after a few months collecting dust and shit.

The BB Senshi Barbatos is actually just a re-packaged SDEX

The prices I listed are from a store on Spadina, in Toronto.
>$7
Hobbywave has it for (at the current exchange rate) $45.80 CAD, and has $18 flat shipping. There's literally no reason (financially) to buy from Canadian stores

I could. I usually prefer to just give them a wash every once in a while though. Much better.

I'm kinda tempted to pick one of these up. The Figure Rise Bust things.

Have any of you made one of these? If so, how did they turn out?

Help me decide which to buy next, HG Master Gundam with Fuunsaiki, HG God Gundam, or MG Gundam Spiegel
>>
>>14783371
those marks on barbatos chest, shoulders and legs are stickers or do they come painted?
>>
>>14783389
They're stickers
>>
>>14783371

MG Gundam Spiegel is not bad for its age, but shows its age. HG God Gundam requires painting for the gold thing inside its chest, but is otherwise not a bad kit. The Master and Fuunsaiki is a great value.

would it be too hard to hypothetically paint them on the parts instead of applying the stickers?
>>
>>14783401
If you have a fine enough brush, the right kind of paint, and a steady hand I can't imagine it would be that hard and it'd probably look better

This was just my practice kit and first gunpla though, I didn't even bother to panel line it and one of the elbows is fucked up from cutting a peg by accident and having to superglue it

My camera/lighting is ass. Its a home made pilebunker I threw together for a Zaku im doing. Would move it to my booth, but I got it lind up mostly straight, and leveled like I want, som im not fucking with it till drys.
>>
>>14783406
I was thinking about getting myself a barbatos as well, but I never liked stickers for main marks

I thought about using something akin to a stencil and spray paint.
>>
>>14783443
There's a sunken groove for the sticker so even some carefully applied masking around it would do the job.

From the bowels of reddit. Lupus with Option set 5
>>
>>14783443
>>14783406
Kind of like what >>14783450 said, you could just apply masking tape to the part, and carefully use your knife to cut out most of the pattern. You could also be less careful and then clean the mess ups with paint thinner, but that might leave the area around the symbol a bit pink (assuming your painting it red and not a custom colour)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Lupus supposed to have white hand covers
>>

>>
>>14783544
Those specific hands are from the option/weapon set, which are typically only molded in one color.
>>
>>14783589
Ah okay, I was going to say, it'd be really fucking lazy of them not to mold the hand covers in white on the standard kit
>>

I've found some long out of print kits on Ebay and Amazon from time to time. Still no LM Leo Custom yet, but a lot of others are there.

Nah, you're all good. My first kits were fucking abominations cut off the tree with an Xacto knife.

Painting details is simple once you get the hang of it, just get the paint, mixing jar, brush, and some fine point q-tips. Always nice to see more people get into plastic crack.
