***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Is painting ever mandatory on Gundam kits?
>>
>>14715714
HGs sometimes need it.
>>
So is anyone getting the Scopedog that is coming out this month? I'm pretty excited
>>
>>14715710
color seperation on pgs is perfect. only paint if you're a masochist
>>
>>14715710
Top Coat is always mandatory.

If you have an airbrush you should be painting everything because you can mix the right color.

If you're using spray cans and you're not making your own colors spraying the armor seems dumb to me, but adding details like gold/chrome/gunmetal/silver/Titanium on certain parts like thrusters and weapons can add a lot while leaving the main colors be.

While sanding and denubbing is always mandatory and top coat hides it some it will look better with primer and paint.
>>
You know, I'm still kind of amazed we didn't get a Zaku Amazing MG, even if P-Bandai.
>>

Is the Gundam Breaker videogame Gunpla-related?
If so, how far into the game (3) do I need to go before I unlock Barbatos or Gusion?
>>
>>14715868
Yes it's heavily Gunpla related. That's the whole point of the game.

You can get the Barbatos like 5 missions in I believe or just going to Bounty Hunter mode until you find someone using Barbatos parts.
>>
>>14715877
I mostly just meant is it cool to post about it here.
I just picked it up and I'm looking forward to grabbing the Barbatos, the FA-78 and maybe one of Char's Zakus.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, get building!

>>
>>14716061
Will it free me from my never ending depression that seems to get worse and worse every day
>>
>>14716090
Yes. If it doesn't I'll buy you a MG.
>>
>>14716097
How do you guys get the motivation to build? I have a bit of a backlog because I kept buying kits that I thought I'd enjoy building or having on display, hoping that doing that would be enough to get me to want to build but I can't seem to get myself to actually start anything.
>>
>>14716090
No duh?
>>
>>14716118
Think of a project and do it. Give yourself a deadline. My current projects revolve around group builds luckily, so I have motivation and a deadline from those.
>>
>>14716118

I think about how two of my friends went to Thailand and had some wild orgies, and how the cost of their trips were about as much as I've spent on gunpla. So if I don't build it was all for nothing.
>>
>>14716145
Gross.
>>
>>14716136
I've tried something like this, didn't work though. But I think it's mostly because of my own inability to properly meet any deadline I give myself. I try to force myself to just do it but I end up just losing steam after building an arm or a torso or something. It sucks, I can't get myself to enjoy anything anymore.

>>14716145
That's pretty funny. You must've spent a shit ton on gunpla.
>>
>>14716160

You can't force yourself to build. If you have to force yourself the hobby isn't for you. I don't know about anyone else, but for me gunpla is a meditative experience. I relax through the gentle motions of denubbing and things like painting give you time to do whatever it is you need to do while waiting for paint to dry. If you're getting bored try working on 2-3 kits at the same time so if you're sick of one you start doing part of another. Just have a well-organized area so you don't get confused.

Also I'm pretty sure everyone has those kits where you buy it and then you lose all motivation to build it. If you didn't start you can always sell it. If not keep it for future customs.

Minus it's FUCK HUGE booster things, I agree. Wait, is it a parts former? Do you have to float parts from one section to another?

>>14716439
But it has to separate into multiple parts, which is totes lame. Anything with a single piece transformation without floating parts/parts forming is best.

>>14716440
Yes.

The best transformer, both in design and in transforming mechanism, is the Airmaster.
>>
>>14716446
Nah. All that happens is that you fold up its chest piece and fold out the tail bits.

Other than the sword-rifles, no it's all one solid transformation. Legs just collapse in, (You need to remove the kneecaps that hold them in place though), shoulders and chest flip up, backpack just folds out. It's loads better than most other HG transformations (ReZEL and ZII comes to mind)
>>
>>14716463
I think it might have been to make the original toy actually transform, but I haven't picked up a No Grade of it to fiddle with. They maybe could do the transformation by folding the legs back, so that the hips would be just below the backpack, but the engineering isn't there.
>>
>>14716453
110% agree. It's a single transformation and it's awesome.

>>
>>14716160
Build with others. Maybe collect a few people that like to build Gunpla, chuck everyone into a Skype call and point your webcams at your work area. You'll be surprised how much more fun it is to do tedious tasks like sanding and nub removal when you can watch a handful of other people also making progress on theirs.

>>
>>14716485
The Z+ has nearly the same transformation.
But yes, the Zeta is a clusterfuck, but at least it's a decent transformation without "HEY YOU GUISE!" face peaking out the bottom or just flipping it over.
>>
>>14716549

>>
>>14716469
I kind of meant in the series. All that happens when Bawoo shows up is the Attacker docks with the Nutter and forms the actual suit. Why have it in two segments to begin with, why not have a waverider form or just keep it as a single mobile suit?
>>
>>14716640
there was no stated reason, Zeta and ZZ era is when everyone went a bit crazy with a lot of high end or gimmicky or experimental but ultimately inefficient and impractical designs

biggest difference on the Z+ is how the wings move, on the Zeta they flip and spin and unfold on sub-arms with multiple attachment points in each mode, while the Zeta Plus just rotate out and plug into the torso...
>>
Going right in deep with my first gunpla kits . Got 3 rg kits cause flat rate shipping. And I know I'm gonna do them. Picked up chars zaku, quanta and of course; the mark 2 AUEG. Because fuck
>>
>>14716696
Well, the Bawoo's surprisingly close to the Victory's Top Fighter and Bottom Parts.
>>
>>14716707

You know, if these are your first kits you're inevitably going to end up with nubs(not too bad) and gouges(bad). I don't know why people keep jumping into the hobby with complex kits. All you're doing is fucking up more time consuming/expensive kits.

Get yourself one of those 10 dollar IBO HGs and do that first, please.
>>
>>14716720
But the Victory actually had a legit reason for being a partsformer, in that damaged or destroyed components could be ejected and a fresh one would dock to continue fighting, after the awful beginning where the League Militiare forced Uso to learn midair docking mid-battle. I don't recall Bawoos doing the same thing in ZZ.

Run a vent during and after, and if the kit isn't drying in that room, then run the shower with hot water for a few minutes. The steam should rise taking most of the fumes (if not all) alongside it and your bathroom is safe to shit in again.

Alright, I'll look into the Bandai kits. On just a quick search I found this: a kit for the rebuild unit 01. This one looks like it comes with a good number of accessories too. Are there any real differences between the different kits? I notice that there is another 01 kit from like 1996.

Forgive me, but these elbows are kind of suspicious. Are they just a kind of rubber that goes over an inner frame or something? I ask only because I can't find any EVA stuff on dalong. In all the screens I can see, the elbows don't seem to move.

Going to be building the MG Zeta 2.0 or the MG Sazabi Ver. Ka next.

You use the syringe to count the droplets you put down.

When you see a ratio, you can count it by how many paint droplets you put into a cup or plate.

You should do the Sazabi since if you build the Zeta you're just going to be thinking "shit, I should've built the Sazabi first so I could pose it with my Nu."

Makes me seriously want to hope that one of next year's shows will be an Origin anime that directly adapts the manga. I wouldn't even care that it'd just be a fancier retelling of the original show. Just give me some goddamn MGs from it.

They originate from SEED. Basically backpacks that carry additional guns/gear that strap onto the MS so it can perform different roles, whether that's high speed, long range firepower, melee, whatever. G-Self does it too.

This guy almost has it, but his layering is all over the place. I'm going to assume he doesn't actually mean to use the same grey as the inner frame for armour parts, as that's a terrible idea. Try not to use colours both under and over other colours, as it makes it look all haphazard.

As for the grey itself, don't make it too much a contrast with the shite as it's purpose is to break it up, not be a colour in its own right. The principle behind it is spot on, though.

Lastly, make more use of your detail colour. In my humble opinion black and white colour schemes always, always need a fairly bright colour to contrast with, which should be a bit more prominent than the occasional lens here and there.

All that being said, black, white and yellow is a great colour scheme.

Yeah, I kinda derped there with the black. Realized it a bit too late. It kind of ended up being just really dark grey for "black".
I was aiming for a sort of panda scheme, since it's going to be my Trueno inspired kit. I should've mentioned it at first, I'm really, really sorry.
That said the extra yellow for top camera and the round in the arms wasn't anything I thought of, so I'll definitely keep that in mind, and the yellow at the end of the shoulders I was planning on having orange at, for the orange lights.

Hey Orphans,
My name is Ein, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are manlet, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day guarding stupid ass princesses. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten any pussy? I mean, I guess it’s fun killing people because of your own insecurities, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than having no parents.
Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much perfect. I was 2nd Lieutenant of the Martian team, and starter on Lord Gaelio's team. What positions do you play, other than “jacking off while crying 'Kudelia sugoi' ”? >>
>>14719280
If a dude is taking pictures of kits like that, he's not thinking about how cute he looks or how he wants people to pay attention to him, he's just showing off kits. Girls posting in the examples in the thread are purely for attention. They have to include their face in it, otherwise they wouldn't even post it in the first place because they're insecure about their positions as women. There's always exceptions to the rule, but what's been posted in this thread aren't so.

Its wrong to show that the gunpla sausagefest stereotype isn't always true?
You haven't explained why this is inherrantly a bad thing.

>>
>>14719323
You can feel proud of your hobby without having your face being the centerpiece of every picture and not the model. The examples posted don't show off the model well at all, just the person's face. If you want more women in the hobby, fine, but realize how women getting into men's hobbies has never, ever ended well. And I'm gay and I don't post pictures of myself next to my gunpla in a sad attempt to be "cute" or for compliments, and I've yet to see examples of men doing the same standard pictures women have.

Literally Tomino's words

"What I want modern day Gundam fans to understand is that Gundam wasn't nurtured by the PlaModel enthusiasts. It was young women who first came to the after recording studio, and Gundam is a work that began with their support. And it was a work that had no connection to the popularity of Gundam PlaModels. So I think the most important thing is creating a work that will attract those kind of girls to it again. I don't think movies as an entertainment industry can succeed without touching on that kind of fundamental portion."

“The very first fans of the original Gundam were young women. Definitely not the PlaModel enthusiasts. With both Gundam and Raideen, of the first fans to be active, 90% were girls. Among a gathering of 1000 fans, about 100 were boys. Around when the first cour ended, young women began to gather to the after recording studio. It took until much later for male fans make an uproar, around the time series got canceled. I thought: You’re late to the party!”

"When the movies were screening, we had many male fans who got into Gundam via Gunpla come to see it. Meanwhile, the girls who had been fans since the TV series aired got together to create their own world via fanzines. The fans, never interacting with each other, existed on separate planes."

Minorities in their suburbs

And their reasons for all these are flimsy at best.

Prime92 gets hated on because her reviews are fucking awful and while I haven't checked out any of her customs recently she was absolutely horrifying in her painting skills before. it's already been explained why it's different. Not to mention the angle that this picture is at is showing the comic bigger than the guy's face. In the pictures posted in this thread, the women have all had the focus of the camera not on their model, but their face. Women can build models, but when they post shit like that it's just attentionwhoring, plain and simple. It's not the fault of others that you're too vapid and stupid to understand such a concept.

The only stickers I see on that are on the knees and eyes. Everthing else looks to be molded in color. They were even advertising the part separation on the shoulders after people complained about them on the original.
>>
>>14720427

I don't think so, actually. With the original HG Barbatos the shoulders didn't come with even a sticker. But here the most complex part, the red part of the shoulders, is a separate piece. Really, all you have to paint is some gray on the face.

But I'm still not going to preorder it because for all we know the 1/100 will be all the same shit but better.
>>

The latter. I really enjoyed the Mobile Suits but the show itself was mediocre.

There's a few. The little vents on the top of the sideskirt, the grey parts on the calves, the grey parts on the top of the backpack, and maybe the entire blue part on the back of the sideskirt are all stickers
>>
>>14720453
Funnily enough, the grey on the sides of the face are painted this time. From what I can see from here (granted this is my autism of not wanting to use stickers so take that as you will): Things that need paint:

>Blue of skirt thrusters
>"Toenails"
>Possibly the red on the heels
>blue-green teal things on knees
>Grey on leg thrusters (god why'd they have to make it such a complex pattern compared to last time)
>Grey on the backpack sides and vents

>>

>>
>>14720519

This. 90% of the time I buy a kit because I like the way that kit looks. Shit, I have built kits before when I didn't like how they looked just because of interesting engineering.

I never got the mentality of people who, for example, say they like something like the Aile Strike but they can't get it because it's from SEED or something.
>>
>>14720523
>>14720525
I guess that was poorly worded. I meant to say save money by getting the Origin and get a better kit out of it than if you'd gotten the 3.0
>>
>>14720525

IIRC it's the best in terms of articulation because it has no Core Fighter. It also has a good balance of having a lot of surface detail without going overboard with it.

Some prefer the MG 2.0 because it looks closer to the anime version and comes with the most stuff.

>>

>>
>>14720592
Not necessarily that they're for newbies (though they are newbie-friendly), they're just a much older design and so are much simpler.
>>
>>14720613
>>14720592

They have a lot of white plastic, which is probably the easiest to de-nub.
>>
>>14720588
I didn't know what I was doing and I fucked up on it big time
>>
>>14720649

Did you gouge?
>>
>>14720655
>gouge

no idea what that means but I was on holiday and the only tool I had was a dull scissors and the only thing I've built before that was a NG sword strike

you imagine the rest
>>
>>14720659

Gouging is when you dig too hard into the plastic and you rip out of a chunk of it instead of smoothly de-nubbing.

My first kit was one of those old NG 1/144 Wing kits. I think it was Nataku or Altron. I literally just tore the pieces from the runners with my bare hands. I'm cringing thinking about it.
>>
>>14720427
barbatos just keeps getting uglier
>>
>>14720617
This cannot be understated. Light colours are many, many times easier to de-nub, as anyone that's built a dark green kit will tell you. Man fuck the Blitz Gundam, that thing is a mess unless you put twice the work into it.
>>
Is Mr. Color usable for hand painting or should I go with the Tamiya acrylic paints? It'd be more convenient to use Mr. Color but I've heard mixed things about using it for hand painting.
>>
>>14720861
>Is Mr. Color usable for hand painting

The Aqueous line is, regular Mr.Color is not. Regular Mr.Color is technically an acrylic, but uses a lacquer thinner which dries too quickly and is too harsh to handbrush. The Aqueous line is water based and can be handbrushed.

>Tamiya

Tamiya is alcohol based. While you can handbrush it, it really isn't that good for handbrushing and can be a pain to work with as it can dry fairly quickly. It's okay for painting in small details though.

>>
So how ridiculous does it look when you mix grades? I have my heart set on a MG Gundam and while I have some experience with models I've never done Gunpla before so I figured it'd be best to grab a HG Zaku or two to practice with.
The real meat of the question is; how dumb is my Gundam going to look slicing up mini Zakus? Should I just spring for a slightly more expensive MG Zaku instead?
>>
>>14721233

>>
>>14721269
>>14721311 is right. Grades aren't necessarily the thing you should be looking for, it's the scale. If you were to do a fight with an RX-78 and a Zaku in different scales, one would tower over the other.
>>
>>14721320
Ah, are scales independent of grades? I thought for the most part HG was 1/144 and MG was 1/100. Obviously there are some exceptions and it's not a hard and fast rule, but.
>>
>>14721331
>Are scales independent of grades
Yes they are. Not every 1/100 scale is a Master Grade. These models are called No Grades, officially "1/100" because they don't have either the HG or MG logo on the box, they just say "1/100" instead.

In simple terms, NGs are essentially HGs upscaled to 1/100.
>>
>>14721331
That is a general rule with Bandai, though if you go outside of their kits you'll want to pay attention to scale. Typically HG and RG are in 1/144, MG is 1/100, and PG is 1/60. Older kits don't follow the formula as closely, NG can be all over the map, and I believe the Revive kits are in 1/100(?).

Actually what apparently happened is that the original plan during initial production (When the model releases were being planned out at the same time) s that Barbatos was supposed to swap over to the Katana as the primary weapon in form IV. During later production and actual animation the staff decided they liked the mace a lot and they decided to keep it instead. So the first kit comes out with the mace, but the 1/100 that comes out later during the aring was going to not have it in favor of the katana and cannon instead to better fit the planned current version of barbatos. Then the change happened and they tossed the mace into a later release instead.

not really, I think the swords look better with 1/144 kits. they just seem smaller than they should be when held by a 1/00. the biggest sword in the set, the buster sword, is supposed to be fucking huge compared to who's holding it. you don't really get that effect when 1/100 hold it. the rapier that comes with the set is too small to be held by a 1/100 and would look like a toothpick in a 1/100's hands anyway. this is just my opinion though.
