***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, get building!

Everything I've seen of HMM is pretty damn solid, Koto has done a good job with the line. Unfortunately for both you and your friend they are about MG priced and MG level complexity, with HG level of color apps because of Koto.
You could help him start with it but you would need to hold his hand a lot, so it's better if you get a cheap gundam he can fuck up on a bunch to learn the basics before bridging the gap to robot animals.
Best case scenario get a cheap IBO kit or a revive gundam and the Zoid at the same time, and just be like "Look what I got you man, and look what I got you to fuck up so you can learn the basics before you dig into the main course!"
If it turns out he isn't into building, offer to build it for him and do a good job of it.
>>
More PGs never ever?
>>
>>14709705
He's not a complete novice to hobby work (he used to build/paint 40k miniatures), though that might not be a bad idea.
>HG level of color apps
How? Zoids only have 2-3 colors apiece outside of the black frames.
>>
>>14709707
It seems like they only make PG kits of lead suits from the highest-selling series. The most recent PG we got was Banshee after the success of the 7th Unicorn episode, so we might get a PG Barbatos depending on how IBO Season 2 does.
>>
>>14709720
I dunno if you saw another anon's recent build of a gunsniper Leena ver, he had to paint every barrel and missile pod, teeth and claws and stuff.
Koto is just like that though, I think they look damn good raw but I also think that the paint apps really enhance the details.
>>
>>14709731
That's unfortunate

So I recently picked up these two kits and an action base. I noticed the build quality of kits seem to vary based on series, as 00 had lots of clear parts and while G-Self had a few it also had a fuckton of stickers.
I'm wondering if any other series kits have the stiff yet oddly flexible nature of the 00 kit without the reliance of stickers the G-Self seemed to have.

I would not be surprised if they have a PG Exia planned / in the works since they already gave us 2 00 RGs and the anniversary isn't even here yet. People have divided opinions about the show here in the west but the show and its merchandise prints money.

>>
>>14709845
In the purely strict sense. you don't need to do anything extra to your model as it's colored already. If you want to paint the model then you should paint every part of the model. Ultimately, your question is if you want to, not if you need to. Ask here if you're confused how but I suggest checking if there's not much clearance between the pieces of the frame to see if paint will rub off.

I think I managed to order Gundam Planet's last Danazine the other day. After I ordered it, within an hour (couple of minutes, really), it suddenly went out of stock.

Waiting on the kits to put this bash together. I figured using kits from the same series would bring a pretty coherent build together.

Using: Grimgerde, Graze Kai, Graze Ritter, and then whatever else I have sitting around for spare parts.

Give me some feedback.

I am not quite sure what to use for building the cloak though. I bought some cheap but real tight knit fabric but I might buy a some costuming silk because it is a bit more fancy-pants which is kinda the theme I am going for.
>>
>>14710144
Looks sleek dude.
Nice color separation, unique look, and design.
10/10 concept.
>>
>>14710144

People use greenstuff to make solid cloaks but it'd probably be easiest to use real cloth. Real question is where are you gonna get a tiny Gjallarhorn logo?
>>
>>14710144

That looks great but I'd just leave the tubing gray.
>>
>>14710144
Looks sick dude. Best of luck to you on your build.
>>
>>14710165

I have some precision jewlery tools that I can use to make it out of Polystyrene just will take some fine detail work and time.

Greenstuff cloaks look kinda neat for action poses but the problem is they are stuck in that pose. I have been trying to figure out a solution by possibly sewing real thin wire into trim on the cloak which would let me bend and pose the cloak while having the wire not be visible
>>
>>14710188

Or you could make two greenstuff cloaks.

I could, but if I can manage to figure out how to make a cloak like that work it is way easier to work with, I only need to make once, and I can put it in any pose that I want. The greenstuff cloak though doesn't really look like cloth though which is my intent to make it look like cloth.

Plus I've never really messed around with greenstuff on that scale, cloth I can deal with.
>>
>>14710213

How about making a cloak out of two pieces of cloth sewn together with wires in between?

So I'm thinking about making a very simple kitbash and recolor from my HGUC GM and an extra GM [G] head from the Ground War Set. I'm still playing around with the colors, but I'm leaning toward more earthy tones, for a more forest camo look. What do you guys think?
>>
>>14710218

I have thought about doing this as well but I am not sure if it will look too bulky, however I think this would be a optimal way to do it but I won't know until I have finished the model so I can actually size the cloak appropriately and test out different things at the right size.

Gonna try a couple of different things and styles since cloth is real cheap considering the scale 1/144 is working at.

If you have a local art store like michaels or Joanne Fabrics then their jewelry aisles have relatively cheap chains you can pick up and cut to length.

So does it still use the stock Graze rifle?
>>
>>14710299

I actually went to Michaels today and did just that exact thing.
>>
>>14710305

No idea yet, I have some builders parts coming but it was part of a deal so I don't actually KNOW what im going to get, there might be a neat rifle in there.

That being said I wanted to base the model off of a traditional fencer by giving it a fencing cape so I might just leave it with the sword. I'll see what I end up with by the time all the stuff comes.
>>
>>14710316

Yeah the theme is cool but even M'Quve had a ranged option. If you wanted to keep it super minimal you could drill some vulcans into its torso and say they're 50mms or mount a gun to that left arm shield.

It's such a sick design, I have to say.
>>
>>14710323

I haven't looked to much at the Graze Kai legs but I think it has a spot to mount a rifle on the back skirt? I know that the Grimgerde does so I assume that the Graze series does as well.

If it does I can definitely stick something there but ill have to take a look once I get all this stuff built.
>>
>>14710330

The Graze has an asshole but it's to mount the thrusters, not a gun. I think it might actually not even be a hole but some kind of T-shape, too.

What in the hell? I'm working on the RG Sinanju, almost done, and the finger on the poseable hand just fucking disintegrated. Full disclosure: It's not my first RG. I've built at least one of every regular RG release and several P-Bandai releases, including 4 MK-IIs that let me recognize the frame used as the base of the Sinanju in an instant. Take this as evidence that I did not ham hand it. I went to rotate the finger into the correct position and it just fell apart. Did this happen to anyone else?

>>
>>14710409
Happens to me sometimes when the mold had excess plastic around the fingers.
Doesn't bother me as I always use the fixed pose hands as those poseable ones are shit anyway.
Especially so in the case of Sinanju as the those finger are not zeonlike like the fixed ones.
>>
>>14710409
... Are you fucking kidding me? The second hand just did the same thing. This one came apart more cleanly, it seems that the bottom part that grabs onto the bar in the finger section just snapped off, but what the flying fuck?

>>14710433
There was no excess plastic. I didn't stress it while trimming the sprues, there was nothing out of the ordinary that I could tell. This has never happened to me, and it just happened twice in one kit. I wasn't planning on using them because I agree that they don't look right for the Sinanju, but it's always nice to have spare parts to draw from for other projects.
>>
>>14710368

Yeah I am excited to see what I actually get sent, with the new Easter style weapons it might come with a spear that fits the theme as well

>>14710371

I just go in with a theme and then look at the parts that are available to me from specific kits that will cost me the least in the long run. Color schemes though you just have to know what colors go well together, plus white goes with basically everything.

Just finished pic related. It might not be AS bad, but if you want it to look nice it will need a METRIC FUCKTON of paint. The guns in pic were all molded in the same color plastic. In terms of the actual build, I'd say its somware in between an HG and an MG. It has a "frame" like an MG, but only with the legs and body. The head just snapped together like a normal HG part. As did the guns, and the feet/arms. The tail is segmented with poly caps. It decently easy to fallow the instructions, but if your used to gundams there a a few things that migt seem "odd" or make you look twice. This kit specifically has a few balance issues, but I would think something like that would depend on the specific kit.

tail pic IE dat ass. I really like how its segmented. The tail and the........gun backpack.....mount....thing, are two things that kind of threw me for a loop. One of the examples of one of those things that makes your head turn for a second, if your used to gundam stuff.
>>
>>14710456
>>14710461
No pictures because I moved and it's now in a box somewhere until I feel like unpacking, but I built a HMM Blade Liger, and it had none of those issues. It is basically on par with a MG.
Also, just a note, but a kit with those proportions (MORE GUNS ON TOP AND TINY LITTLE FEET) is never not going to have balance issues.
>>
>>14710448
The RG Sinanju uses some strange gloss injected plastic and zakuaurelius mentioned it's typically more brittle than normal plastic. It probably has something to do with the nature of the plastic. It's honestly a big mistake, they should've used normal plastic.

>>14710467
I'm well aware of what gloss plastic does, that wasn't the issue here. Only the red is done in gloss. The rest of it is the same plastic you'd find in any other RG.
I will say though, that the hard and brittle gloss red caused me to have to change my exacto blade mid-kit, rather than between every kit like I usually do because it dulled it out faster. Trying to cut gloss plastic with a dull blade is a recipe for chips and stress marks, so if you're not going to use putty and paint, plan accordingly.

I figured. Theres a lot of small details to be had in the guns. The actual dino itself was fine. It did feel annoying lining the orange cap things, just cause there was so many. In general i figure a quadruped design would be better balanced than a biped. Espically with a fuckton of guns. I just thought its tiny little cute feet would be a bit more reinforced.

The Gundam Markers aren't for panel lining. There's panel lining versions, yes, but the standard ones are just alcohol-based acrylic in a marker type applicator. Said applicator is very shitty, by the way.

Nice display, anon. That Sinanju looks extra red.

Curious, but my question is what should you top coat it with that stills keeps the shiny gloss look? I'm not a 100% sure if gloss coat is the way to go, seen a few anons say that it'll actually dull the kit a little.
>>
>>14710959
That's probably more to do with my lighting than the background on the monitor, but I do like how that turned out.

As for the top coat, if you want super glossy, there's that old trick about mixing hard wood floor acrylic with a matte clear coat and then thinning it down to get a more durable semi-gloss. You could attempt that without mixing in the matte coat. Basically just floor acrylic and thinner. I have no idea if that would actually work, but it might be worth experimenting with.

I don't really into camo or camo coloring so you're gonna need to do more research into that but make use of more color desperation at least.
This isn't even much better but I much prefer these legs to those solid brown ones. Play around a bit more after doing some research and maybe we'll color balance better.
Honestly if it were me giving it a color design I'd drop the brown entirely except for maybe some accenting and go full dark green/lighter green.

Only reason I'm hesitant to go full green with brown bits is that that's literally GM Sniper colors, so I'd be too close to that. That's why I went mostly brown with green bits, to make it look like a tree.

Also your recolor just feels too busy To my eyes, which is why I tried to go with more brown overall. Maybe if the green bits on the calf and gears were a different shade of brown, same with the lower Arms... Idk, I just much prefer the poop covered look than the green bushes sticking out every other bit.

>>14711507
I like the feel of the RG 2-tone shades of color thing you had going so how about that for the brown? The reason I tried to make it mostly brown with the upper torso being green was to match what the Feddies seem to do with their coloring. The green waist bit was just to add a little more color. Here's another attempt, with almost what color paints I have (judging from the eyedropper tool at least. I added two shades of green, and two shades of brown in there. How does this look?
>>
>>14711572
I think this one is definitely leaps and bounds above the first, the only thing I'd want to try to push is more details, like on the head and maybe some play with panel scribing, but other than that it comes together pretty solidly.
Personally I'd make all the joints the solid grey but that's just my preference.
>>
>>14710959
From http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html
>In a small cup mix three parts Future with one part pre-mix Simple Green. Apply to your model with an airbrush using 15 to 18 psi pressure and about four to six inches of distance. Apply an even slightly wet coat then immediately cover the model with a large bowl or clean box because this will be a major dust magnet. Allow to cure overnight. When you remove the cover your model may appear to be wet still but no, this is the finish that is achieved - a STILL WET LOOK! You can apply a second coat if needed but be sure to cover the model again during the cure process... Due to the high gloss aspect fingerprints will show up very easily so keep a lint free polishing cloth handy for when you cannot resist touching it.

>>14710476
If i remember right, that was kinda a point in the show. The pilot took what is supposed to be a fast agile sniper mech that could run and jump and climb to get into position, the whole tail is a rifle and the pilot seat spins around to line up with a scope and firing controls, and strapped the metric fuckton of guns on it because "more gun means more better right?"
>>
>>14711738
The fuckton of guns is because the pilot of that specific variant loves dakka (her previous zoid had a bunch of cannons) and her fighting style is basically "shoot a wall of projectiles" because she can't aim for shit. Iirc she chose a gunsniper because it was cute or something. I don't recall her ever even using the tail sniper on it herself.

I know you're trying to take the high ground, but you're basically trying to defend the fact that you're lazy.
Even just panel lining makes a kits look better than unpainted.
Even just painting a kit with the base colors or top coating the plastic makes it look a lot better.

You're lazy. That's it.
If you can afford the plastic, you can afford to paint.
>>
>>14712293
Doing either of them ruins a kit.

Been working on a Dougram kit recently and it had an ad for this thing in it.

Seems like it would work well enough for a little spraypainting for people who don't paint much outside small details.

Can't seem to find them for sale anywhere though, so I'm wondering if any other companies produce something similar.

Painting noob here. What's the best way to deal with painting pegs/ports and joints? I've read the horror stories of joints and plugs getting too thick to fit together after painting. Do I bite the bullet and paint them, or is it better to avoid painting them completely if possible?

Any NJ bros here? Are there any good places in central NJ for buying gunpla? I'll look at B&N if I'm there, but the one near me doesn't seem to have updated its stock in a long time. Gundam Planet is an hour's drive, plus tolls, so that's pretty much not worth it for me.
>>
>>14712820
Just order from the GP website or amazon.
>>
>>14712841
That what I've been doing until now. I was hoping to get lower prices between Amazon and GP's shipping. I have Amazon Prime, so shipping doesn't usually kill me too much, if it ever costs me anything. But I'm just looking to improve prices all around.
>>
>>14712820
Since you're in central NJ, I would assume it's a bit of a trek to go to the store, so gas would probably exceed shipping costs.

However, what I do is I make a wishlist of about 20 items and drive to GP, filling up my backlog for long enough to keep me from paying out my ass from either gas or shipping.

They give you a 15 percent off punch card for the next time you come in if you spend $150 (or 2 if you spend 300, and so on), so if you bulk like me you'll be saving a lot.

Yes. It was a line originally made for foreign markets with the idea being more dynamic looking proportions and with some retarded part swapping gimmick with HG kits that honestly looks like shit and nobody cared about.

They cheaped out on pretty much everything not the articulation on them. Giant gaping hollow parts even worse than most SD kits, poor part separation, removed key gimmicks from the MS that pre-existing sd of the designs were able to work in, weapons that look like they belong on 80s FG kits, and they seem to have an allergy to clear parts.

I was kind of sad to learn that the Barbatos BB Senshi was actually the Ex-standard one with some extra weapons and armor parts tossed in.

A handle should be feasible considering it's just a tube shape with a hole in it.
Measure the little portion of the saber bottom that plugs in to a handle, use a drill bit to put hat hole in a runner. Also there's circular styrene (Plaplate) rods too. The detailing if you want any is the hard bit, and that would likely be done with a panel scriber and forming bits of detail shapes out of scrap plastic.
>>
I have a stupid as fuck idea: Would it be possible to use spray paint in an airbrush?

So spray paint cans (even half cans) usually end up with too thick/heavy of a spray right? Airbrushes let you control how much air/pressure/spread you have to your spray. So assuming there was a way to get the paint out of a spray can, would it work well in an airbrush?
