I'm more worried about Rina than her to be honest. Also her SDP would clash with the core, so it probably wouldn't work as well. It only worked with Akira because of the twin properties and he has the same SDP as Rina.

It's becomes clearer with rewatch, but like the last couple of battles I feel like a few scenes got "director's cut" so they can slot it into the programme's time, although it wasn't hard to piece together what happened. This episode for instance, we didn't hear Sui explaining his plan anyone but Akira and Rina suddenly knows, and then after he summoned the laser, Amateratsu was suddenly faceplanted onto the ground but we didn't see him crash. Earlier episodes of Exodus didn't really have this problem.

The problem that's bothering me is just the inconsistent tone.

In which rather than face some self introspection Kazuki gets told he's "super special" and he rolls with it and comes and saves everyone. Then Mimika is healed by Kazuki but Akira is just left to go poof.

The Mimika thing shouldn't have happened this episode. It should have been next episode and it should have been shown to require a decent amount of time, like 5 minutes or so of contact. That way it shows Kazuki has gotten this power but isn't omnipotent and makes sense why he couldn't save Akira.

As it is now we get an inconsistent feeling because since Kazuki needed no time at all to not only free Mimika but heal her, then Akira not getting healed doesn't feel right.

When I rewatched the series I realized how shallow a lot of fafner characters are. They're kind of 1-note until you get to "their episode" which is what we remember them by. The flip side is they're pretty good at those episodes. Considering that Akira got one of the most memorable episodes.

To be honest, it's likely Mimika's gone too. Kazuki just pulled her body back from being assimilated. Remember back in episode 9, he was able to pull humans from assimilation but they were pretty much dead.

Also can't help but wonder if Kazuki's powers only apply to people being assimilated forcefully by the enemy, but if it's their Fafners... well SOL.

I think they were trying to bring back Soushi from the start. Misao was a failed Sushi.

There was also how Canon asked Kenji to go help Kazuki, and then his next appearance has him assimilated by the Diablo-types. Koyo slashed once at the Mir, then did nothing afterwards. Same with the Eurus-types. And Misao didn't even appear after Vagrant started the stab.

This is largely because of just how many characters there are now. When the cast split, there were 5 on the island, so episodes could focus on all 5. Sakura and Canon were added to make it 7, but it was their first re-sortie so it wasn't an issue to give them a bit more focus at that point. After Canon was gone, Kenji and Koyo joined back to have 8 island pilots. With the return of the expedition, that includes Akira, Kazuki, and Misao in this battle, since Hiroto is gone and Soushi and Maya are away, up to 11.

So we've basically doubled the pilot count from early Exodus when they had 5 in one sortie, to this where we have 11 (+Eurus-types and Narain). There's just not enough time to give focus to every single pilot like they did before.

So Kazuki is now end game Setsuna?

Kazuki's been piloting the Sein on and off again for 4+ years now, been in 2 comas now, touched his hand to a fucking Festum and let it partial assimilate him, and had his arm explode. Kazuki's still the one who gets to make the deal with the Mir and of course it only occurs when they're neck deep in the shit when if Sein had been active sooner, this fight would have been a non-issue

The issue isn't that Akira was in bad shape. The issue is Kazuki's plot armor has gotten obnoxious when previously it was passable. The world bends over backwards for him whenever necessary while everyone else doesn't get the same treatment.

I think part of it is Kazuki's mindset. First, in DA he has such a low sense of self that he's able to get into an altered state of consciousness and be Fafner more easily. Even after he gains more of a sense of self, he still becomes one with his Fafners easily, which is probably a quality that lets him relate to, and be related to by, Festum. This quality also let him birth Sein, which turned out to be a platform for him to attract more notice from Mir. Second, he goes from wanting to disappear to wanting to live, which must touch a chord with a learning Mir. Third, he's a pretty simple guy. His wishes are to live and to protect. He doesn't have side-issues of jealousy or love or anger at other humans like Akira does.

tl;dr being a zen combat Jesus lets Kazuki accumulate more special powers that keep building on each other.

Everyone on the island are actually various Festum who've come to believe themselves as humans. And if one looks closely, many of them share similarities; and that's mainly due to them replicating the personalities of the dead in the region.

All them have the power to shift into a Fafner Festum. All Seri bodies shift into Zwolf Festum, for example.

That is, all except one. This exception is a normal human. One who was discovered and raised by a Sein and a Nicht. Despite her inability to shift and her relatively weaker body, she has gone through school and made friends with Festum.

One day, she's called in to figure out how to activate an ancient machine that resists and repels all attempts by the Festum to activate it.

First season had him screw over his whole island because of his ~muh humanity gotta save other humans~ mentality. There's the running away to ~see the world~. I think, in Exodus, Kazuki's flaw is easier to take in as a Gary Stu quality. He's turned into a self-sacrificing hero it seems like... but all I see is someone who's desperate to die and have his life have a meaning. I always thought he was suicidal. And towards the end, and especially with Sein's limiters off, he pretty much got drunk with what seemed to be his invincibility.... I think I read somewhere that if he hadn't gone ahead and offered his hand to the glowing festum trees, he probably wouldn't have had his whole arm crystallize during battle (It was the same arm he offered). At some point, he probably believed his own luck would save him. It didn't.

tldr; Kazuki's not exactly relatable, but he's not perfect. I blame plot armor writing not his character.

There's a link out there that took the random numbers they flashed around in the first series and Kazuki and Maya were at a 3 and 5, I think, with 1 being the ideal synergetic number. I think, Koyo came after them.

The issue with this is that despite being a "self sacrificing hero" other characters have sacrificed themselves when they clearly had things they wanted to live for. Holy shit, I'm done though. The Kazuki Makabe Defense squad is in full force. It's pretty much a given in any show that someone who wants to live makes for a far more interesting death. I think it's a lie that Kazuki didn't really want to die. 1st cour, I'm pretty sure he wanted to die piloting over living a boring but limited life. He sort of got better and fooled himself into thinking he wanted to live, but he didn't really get into that mentality until the latter end of their away journey, when after seeing everyone drop like flies, he probably realized he was being stupid. Too late though.

Anti-Festum Mecha Fafner Zeta

Set years after the original series. Soushi's now a renegade going by the alias "Gillette Labia" who works for the Anti NNUN (New Neo United Nations) organization, the YUGO. He gets a new Fafner called the Nichtshiki.

The main character gets made fun of by a grown-up Billy for having a girl's name (Angelica). He gets the Zeta Fafner. Which can turn into a submarine.

Winds up turning into a three-way power struggle when the Axis Mir appears and stages their rebellion. They're led by some weird Maya/Kazuki hybrid. The Kazuki half is mad that Soushi rejected him and the Maya half is miffed that her Kazuki half is still hung up on him and his magic golden fingers.

None of the previous deaths have ever had this after taste because none of the other deaths ever happened after Kazuki had gotten his 2nd Festum recharge meanwhile Akira's goes because he doesn't get that.

That's the issue, you've got Akira dying of something that Kazuki's basically been bailed out of for the second time now.

In HaE he got Festum magic to heal him all up.
Now in Exodus he got more Festum magic to heal him all up again.

And then you've got Akira poofing because no free Festum heals for him.

It'd be more like if Kazuki and Shoko had both fenrir'd at the same time but Kazuki was able to escape.

Or if Kazuki survived getting his cockpit twisted up or slam dunked.

It's a matter of it being well executed. This wasn't well executed. I just finished watching Victory Gundam where people dropped like flies and Uso had the plot armor of a tank and nothing was flawed like this.

It's immersion breaking and I've already said that they simply had to modify the scene a bit and the after taste wouldn't be there.

Kazuki only shows up AFTER Akira dies. That improves the scene.

Akira holds the fort long enough for Kazuki to get there. He doesn't just burn himself out doing something that if he just waited a moment Kazuki could have just rapid fired into the pillar.

No. That incorrect. The scenario I present has Akira overcome Vagrant without Kazuki's help. He fires the blast and frags it on his own, dies, and THEN Kazuki shows up and cleans up all the fodder.

As the scene is currently set up, Kazuki is necessary for Akira to destroy Vagrant.

That isn't Kazuki getting more spotlight. That's Kazuki managing to save everyone only because Akira beats Vagrant's attack on his own.

Or alternatively make it so Kazuki fails to break the barrier just like Koyo and it's all Akira who repels it without help.

Plot armor is a given in the genre. The issue is it's implementation.

I'll give you an example in DA

Mamoru's death. In Mamoru's death Kazuki could not have stopped the Reflection Type Festum and it was Mamoru's actions that led to it's death and the cost of Mamoru getting hit by a shock wave and mulched. Kazkui, despite having plot armor as the protagonist lacked the agency to save the day.

In this scene, Kazuki had all the agency after being revived. In that everything could only have happened because he was there. This is sub optimal execution because it feels like Kazuki could have easily done more if the writers didn't feel like killing off Akira.

The writers job is to immerse you in the story so that you forget you're reading or watching a story. The better a story hides it's binding, the better a story is. Fafner has been good at this but this scene really makes those seems obvious.

And with Exodus, Fafner has become more an ensemble cast than even more and yet Kazuki has still undergone the least amount of turmoil and development.

He hasn't faced the turmoil of fighting humans because he's always off fighting Aviator when they show up.
He hasn't faced the dehumanizing aspect of the new assimilation phenomenon because he wasn't on the island.
He's made the big speeches about wanting to use what's left of his life to save people but he's outlived three other islanders now who've basically done the same thing.
His story isn't as compelling as it was in DA and he feels more like a hold over than a developing character. That "Kazuki's the MC but all his scenes are him moping a bit, him piloting his robot and fighting aliens, or him letting people do things for him"

I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade Kazuki getting more development in exchange for Maya/Canon/all the others getting less.

If Kazuki had to deal with fighting against humans (again, because this was already an issue in DA) I think it'd draw away from Maya's arc regarding this.

I think at this point, really, Kazuki (and Soushi), are pretty much satellite characters. They're the main characters, but at the same time, they're not. Their characters have run its course. If Exodus is to be followed by another season, I'd say this season is the transition season... actually, Exodus might even be a litmus test at this point. Can Fafner survive without Soushi, Kazuki, and Maya?

Jumping in once this is long past relevant, but I always took Canon's skill as being a result of her experience too. Seems like even by DA she had been a pilot for quite a while with the NUN.

I guess it's sort of a Char situation, where he was a crappy Newtype but a very skilled pilot, so it balanced out. Canon didn't have the built-in genetic advantage of the island kids, but made up for it with combat experience.

That was a part of a joke while also being serious at the same time, expanding upon the idea we had in the previous thread about an alternate reality where the Island spawned Festum Fafners the way Sky-kun's "island" spawns Eurus or Roadrunner spawns Diablos.

The idea was that Festum haven't quite learned about human-style reproduction, so they just birth another copy with some preset personality then have some older pair raise the "child".

While some may pair off differently than the humans they replicated, maybe a Seri with a Kazuki for example, they otherwise have the same core personality as the humans they took after.

And because Festum don't place much on looks due to incomplete human knowledge, there isn't anything wrong with several different Mayas existing at the same time, just in different age levels.
