I can't say I did. Most major deaths in Fafner can be seen coming, but I was surprised about his.

That I'm just hoping we get a nice blow up out of Rina. A nice little "It's always Kazuki who gets the special treatment."

I know that's unfair but it'd be bit cathartic for me. Especially if Maya tries to defend Kazuki but gets a "You always defend him because you're so head over heels in love with him"

It'd be an irrational scene and even if Rina has grown as a person I want SOMEONE to blow up and there's not really anyone who can besides her.

Soushi and Maya are too deep in the Kazuki hole. Seri is off with Orihime, Kenji and Sakura won't, Reo and Mimika have their romance to catch up on, Misao's a kid and Koyo saying something other than "I'll protect the Island" would be a miracle in itself.

Sui also obviously won't explode but hopefully those hours of video games he played included some VNs so he knows when to fucking go for the kill and get Rina.

I was quite surprised it happened. Usually a character that is wracked with the death of another, or saved by another, doesn't end up dying as well. And he had both, Hiroto and Walter. This scene in particular felt like an anti-death flag to me.

I didn't believe it even during the bus scene. I kept waiting and waiting for someone to tell him to get off, and that it wasn't his time yet.

Akira was using the especially volatile Zero Fafner, by himself, with multiple giant SDP charges used up. Let's not forget this was also RIGHT after waking up from a near-coma that was itself because of his assimilation. It's entirely possible he just couldn't be saved.

If anything he might have made it if not for Rina's SDP side effects, but that's not her fault. It was a crappy situation but he knew what he was doing, and got to go out on his own terms.

I can understand not liking a character. That's all up to preference, whatever, who cares. Or having complaints about a relative lack of development, that's very reasonable to a point. But I don't get why the whole Kazuki thing is being treated as some giant unexplained asspull just because people can't pay attention.

The island has a Mir.

Mir, all of them, have the ability to create Festum as an extension of their self. The island Mir has not been known to do this, instead opting to make use of the Fafners, but absolutely nothing indicates that it couldn't create Festum if it felt the need.

On top of that, it's been established that unusual things happen when a human allows themself to be assimilated. Most sane people are obviously going to fight back against a fate that basically equals death, but when someone accepts it, we get cases like Mjolnir. Who was absolutely more Festum than not, this is important, but also influenced enough by Akane to stand apart. Then there's Soushi, whose mind was left untouched because the Festum needed his knowledge. By the end his body was assimilated completely, but with his intact mind he was able to cross over to the Festum side, again, willingly. This makes his new Festum body nothing more than a storage container for his mind, a shell copied off of his physical appearance. Perfectly within the realm of possibility for Bollearios to create, and able to work for Soushi without a Mir likely because of Kurusu's unique existence.

It's not hard to see where this leads. Kazuki is a unique situation with his arm, it doesn't seem like the Mir fashioned a completely new body for him, but it definitely mixed a healthy portion of more Festum into him. This also comes with some risks though, ghost Canon/maybe the island's Mir stated that Kazuki could trust his heart to it. More than likely, meaning he would become like Mjolnir and be a representative of the island's Mir, or worse, lose himself to the hivemind completely.

This is presumably why the Mir doesn't just go around handing out Festum bodies like candy every time somebody is in danger. Even if it was accepted willingly, it'd be an uphill battle to maintain your sense of self while connected to the island Mir and all of the minds already part of it. They'd end up like Mjolnir or Mir-Canon, emotionlessly speaking for the hivemind with only rare teases of who they once were, would anyone's family really be happy to see that? Also that's not what's being said. What's being said is that Kazuki's level of plot armor and importance to the plot do not match up with how his character has developed throughout Exodus.

Chirico in Votoms has LITERAL ACKNOWLEDGED IN SERIES PLOT ARMOR but it's not as obnoxious as it's gotten with Kazuki because Chirico kept developing as a character.

All Kazuki has done is mope a bit, go on dates with Soushi, fight Festum, make promises he can't keep and now we're being told "YOU KAZUKI ARE THE ONE WHO CAN BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN X AND Y"

But your inability to acknowledge that Fafner isn't a perfect 10/10 master piece is what will destroy these threads.

I thought that even if he was saying stuff like "I will live" and that he'll return to the island, Kazuki was really looking to go out fighting because he didn't want to die useless, which was basically what he saw his fate was before Exodus. Too afraid to start anything long-term, Cooking at a small diner was just fine because there's it's not really long-term. (Or he could leave anytime with no consequence).

It's also likely that the Island Mir chose Kazuki as its representative Guardian Festum-being. Ashoka chose Soushi for whatever reason,and even Orihime stated that Soushi's next life isn't with D-Island, but with Ashoka's.

At this point, Kazuki has likely gained almost as much control over the Island's Mir as Orihime, given that he's able to force Mimika's Fafner's core to restore her original physical self. Either that or it's another side-effect of Sein's unique assimilation capability representing Existence, and Kazuki's will to exist.

Gotta admit, while Fafner Exodus is more aesthetically pleasing, on a rewatch I find Dead Aggressor is a lot easier to go through. That pacing is just right when you marathon it. It doesn't drag out too long and there are very few (if at all) episodes that feel out of the main storyline.

For one thing he made lots of stupid decisions in DA. We also got cheated out of his death in the same episode Akira died (he was suppose to die somewhat soon), so it's understandable public opinion to be somewhat against him.

Actually now that I think about it, how comes he can pilot Sein without limiters for months following the Exodus group when his assimilation pheno was supposely so bad he would have croak in a few years even without piloting.

Three years is still a decent amount of time, all things considered. Even if Sein pushed that down to one year it would still be enough time for what Exodus covered.

I believe that Soushi plays a big part in this too. Orihime calls the Sein and Nicht "two powers as one", it would make sense that they share the assimilation burden when both are active. It would also explain why Soushi, piloting for less than a year and with a Festum body at that, was struck with assimilation as bad as pilots that have been active for years. Kazuki is worse off to begin with (Just ask his arm), but evenly splitting the assimilation with Soushi would still buy him some time.

So I agree that Kazuki is getting a lot of perks this season despite not putting in any more work than the Gen 1 pilots (or Akira). But his Jesusosity is justified by the first season.

In the first half of DA, he's crippled by self-abnegation and dependency on Soushi, which is a horrible personality trait in general but a great personality trait for Fafners. This makes him the most OP pilot of Gen 1. This would probably be enough to attract Tsubaki's attention (and through her, Tatsumiya's Mir's special attention), but him being important to Soushi is probably an extra reason for Tsubaki (and the Mir) to care about him above all others.

His self-abnegation hits rock bottom during Sein's first sortie, but with Tsubaki's counseling, he's able to come out of it with a strong desire to exist. Kazuki and Sein effectively rebirth each other as "existence," which must be interesting to Tsubaki (and Mir). The Mir can probably also relate to the concept through Sein's Tatsumiya-born Core.

In H&E, Kazuki has spent the last two years in Crossing, which Mir probably finds interesting (assuming that it makes Kazuki more of a psychic open book, which Mir can read better than most). He also becomes a duality with the equally-interesting-and-powerful Nicht.

At this point, all the building blocks are in place: of course Tatsumiya's Mir would favor Kazuki and bless him before others. From Mir's perspective, it doesn't matter that he hasn't done anything extraordinary this season, because everything was set up in the first season and the movie. Now, it does seem a little silly from a storytelling perspective, because it looks like "well if Mir was ready to bless him then, why not do it then?" The answer, as an anon probably said earlier, is that Mir has figured out that people don't want to be Festum, and didn't make this blessing-offer to Kazuki until Kazuki had to either become a Festum-hybrid or die.

tl;dr it stands to reason that Mir gives Kazuki special Jesus treatment.

As a bonus, a lot of Kazuki's driving emotions are kind of low on the emotional pyramid, or are things that Tatsumiya's Mir has already learned about -- life and existence. People like Akira are more emotionally complex -- and I don't mean that in a "better written" way, but in that "I have PTSD" and "I won't lose to Kazuki in love!" is kind of "Humanity 201" to "I want to live's" "Humanity 101."

Among other good points, I think this part is really important in a lot of ways.

I tried less successfully to say something similar in the walls of text earlier in the thread, but Kazuki is probably one of the few that could maintain his sense of self because his will to live is fairly "new". Everyone wants to live and would try to put up a fight within a hivemind system, but Kazuki went for years denying himself and his own worth, so when after finally confronting his demons with Sein he came out the other end stronger for it, with a fresh desire to exist and make up for lost time. Not to mention his ticking time limit as a plot point in Exodus, visibly propelling him to find something worth devoting his remaining life to.

They had Ein and Zwei built already, so it might have just been a matter of compatibility with Kazuki. Elf was a pretty basic design too, maybe the flight models and Serpents and such just took longer to tweak.
