Hey guys, it's been a couple days.

Expect a fairly large balance overhaul for Symphobattle in the two days or so. Just got done playing for about 3 or so hours with about 10 different characters to flesh out the system and find some balance.

Some previews:

It's really tough to do combo attacks well in a pen and paper. Especially with the recent changes on their way. If the community here could assist more, that would be nice. I discussed it with my playgroup, who have been assisting me in battle testing, and they also cannot think of a means of making it work.

You'd need to work out range, adjacency and line of sight for each component of the attack. In practice, I beleive the most practical manner of working combination attacks is to have the attack be created in a similar fashion to Symphogear and other mahou shoujo/mecha musume sentai series, in that the team itself must actually design the attack using the effects of each character's existing abilities in order to produce a result. This means that the functionality of the combination attack system (as there must still be a solid framework with which to create the attack) must flow organically from the existing gameplay functions.

As someone who plays a lot of RPGs I don't think that would work. It would really screw with the balance because then combo attack kinda just appear and deal extra damage. So as a GM this causes a problem where you have to design monsters under the assumption that combos attacks always happen. Also as a player, I would want to be able to plan my combo attack into a larger combo with the rest of my party. Would also allow me to add roleplaying into the use of combo attacks, as I would refuse to combo with characters that my character didn't trust yet etc.

Personally I like the idea of the players in a combo attack holding their actions, as that provides a drawback to using combo attacks but also allows combo attacks to be strong enough to be effectively game changing. It also allows there to be counterplay, like maybe some boss level opponents have an ability that allows them to disrupt forming combo attacks with against a saving throw.

Hibiki is sort of in the right because it's something of a moral question of punishment vs. heroism, that a "superhero" can only save people by harming others. Being a "hero" means someone needs to be the "villain" and Hibiki doesn't have the guts to without question harm another person even if it's the most sensible solution. It's somewhat echoic of Shirou's altered ideal in Heaven's Feel, only far less thought-out or sensible. You can say it's a stupid ideal that wouldn't ever work in reality, but it's certainly a noble one.

I'm familiar with the system, anyway, so if SBD doesn't mind I can try and toss a variant together for you to try if you're super opposed to many types of dice.

For selling d% or generally FFG-style I personally wouldn't focus as much on the dice as on the style of character progression, myself. 3.5e-style class progressions, while intuitive to people who've played 3.5e, aren't as interesting to me as something more modular than Dark Heresy's or Only War's until you have a LOT of classes. Especially for something like Symphogears, which are explicitly modular per the however-many-locks they have on the system.

On OW's character creation [full disclosure: I'm only playing in my first campaign of it now, so some issues might not have presented to me yet]: I think the concept that FFG was going for was sound, but by making the aptitudes as dynamic as they did (costs of everything potentially changing every 2500 exp?!) they made things a pain to manage, especially for novice players. Plus the fact that some aptitudes were basically useless while others were essential to every class... it's a mess, but not an inherent mess.

I'm not sure how exactly I'd fix it: reducing the class shifting makes PCs much less dynamic, but keeping it as it is makes them unmanageable. Making aptitudes purchasable every X levels or with XP might work but I'd have to playtest it; the problem is making them too available ends with an "everyone does everything equally" issue at high levels.

Sliding scales of aptitudes with fixed discounts per matched, maybe? Still complicated.

The main reason I talk d% is because it's a lot easier to explain "roll these two dice and look at the number" to newcomers (which I deal with a lot, as the designated "GM when nobody knows the system" of my peer group) than it is to match out which die goes to which roll and which ones matter for what.

I disagree completely. Not having the courage to act and causing innocent people to get hurt is something I find despicable. I didn't even realize Genjuro was knocked out in that scene until I saw it on the H&D blog, so it's fairly new info to me. It's fucking bullshit. I'd always asked myself "What the hell was Genjuro doing in that scene?" and then I come to find out her was right there, in the middle, knocked out. And this assassination was all done so that Elf9 could get her sacrifice, Carol could be "absolved" of sins, and topdad could give a speech about being a father. I couldn't be more disappointed with Kaneko. Ignoring canon because it's convenient to shoehorn in your shitty narrative ideas is LN tier garbage writing.

I felt the same. It seemed like they really didn't know what to do with her, since she had the most complete character arc in S1 and there really wasn't much left.

There were still things like showing her being more laid back and comfortable with school life, and the whole thing with worrying about Hibiki, but she didn't have any real development or payoff like Chris did.

I thought that was ok, though. Better than trying to force things to happen in what was already a fairly cluttered season.

How Chris was handled in GX is rather worse. The existence of the keyword just serves to annoy me further. The things written there aren't even something we couldn't surmise from the ideas they seemed to want to go with, but they're things really ought to have been expanded in the show itself.

Characters don't need to constantly have some challenge to overcome and learn from, despite what some people will claim. If the character is developed, don't try to shoehorn in a new problem or tread back over previously covered ground and ruin them in the process. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a character being fully developed at the start of the season, all you have to do is have them help other characters while balancing a group dynamic, and give them external (rather than internal) obstacles to overcome. I don't know why so many writers don't realize that.

Maybe they don't need it, but there's the thing. If a character has nothing left to overcome, she'll be forced to take a backseat and allow for new characters to overcome their issues. Hence, less relevance/screentime. Putting up new issues is a way to try to keep the character interesting and make people want to see her fighting her issues.

And this is probably a terrible example, but remember Kira Yamato. He had all of his development in season 1. Season 2 having him as a protag that was already finished developing made him out to be a robot.

But that's not true. You aren't limited to character development and overcoming personal struggles to get screentime. Genjuro got most of his screentime in season 1 and he didn't have any personal issues to overcome, he just helped others. There's nothing wrong with that, and when you have characters that aren't overcoming things it lets you introduce new elements to the cast and dynamics.

I'll give you a good example and a bad one. Good: Genjuro in season one. Bad: Genjuro in GX. You just need to give them the appropriate support role and you end up with a better story than if you'd have just focused on people with issues.

Back in S1 characters faced their struggles with some self-awareness, actually tried to improve, and developed gradually by thinking critically about their experiences. The end of the date in S1E9 where Tsubasa realizes what Kanade meant about something beyond the fight (having a place in the world you're fighting to protect) and decides to follow her dream of singing, or Genjuro's conversation with Chris in episode 10, couldn't have happened with Tsubasa and Chris from episode 4.
You can get development just by having the characters striving to better themselves and succeeding, and it doesn't have to be forced, intrusive, or "profound."

I'm basically agreeing with you, in that I think GX's way of doing things was fucked up and unnecessary, but also suggesting that you don't have to make the character completely static to avoid that trap.
