Just how popular is Victory in Japan, exactly? I read on Wikipedia that G and Wing were the only Gundam series to have an average TV rating of 4% in the 90s.
Was Tomino out of touch at the time? Was SEED the show that caused a resurgence in popularity for the franchise?

They tried to cash on older fans and at the same time bring the kids who are into SD Gundam models. So they made they youngest main character and included a bunch of children in the cast. It backfired and the series had low ratings and sales. Next year, the idea was to get the elementary school children market back, so they scrapped some unused concept in favor to G Gundam and Tomino appointed Imagawa to direct it. G Gundam started with a backlash from older fans, but got popular with children. Sales were good. They made Wing more serious to satisfy the older fans, but keeping the "Sentai" format used in G. It kinda of worked, even thought the show is pretty bad.
That said, it seems Victory was still popular with the older fans and did well in LD sales.

It's a shame F91 didn't take off, really. It had none of Victory and Wing's flaws, and managed to be mature while also bringing new elements to the table. It had the potential to be something great.

Not to mention, it's ratings weren't that much lower than what G ended up pulling in. 3.89%, and it's worth noting that Japanese wikipedia says that even Wing's ratings weren't that impressive at the time.

What the fuck happened with this? The last five or so episodes are an absolute mess. Huge chunks of story are missing and the last episode makes no sense because nothing is explained. It was pretty good up until the ending, and now the whole thing has kind of a sour taste.

It got cancelled.
It had two main sponsors, Sanyo Electronics and Bandai. Sanyo Electronics pulled out because of an incident involving faulty heaters. Bandai took it on themselves to carry it on for a bit but Layzner plamo sold poorly... it was competing against Zeta Gundam and later Gundam ZZ so that's not terribly surprising.

There's also how in the manga the actual ending with Mazinger Z being defeated and such is thrown as part of the Great Mazinger manga, rather than Mazinger Z's ending itself, but that doesn't solve the rather rushed introductions of stuff like Boss Borot in the 2nd half of the original manga.

Be honest, how does it make you feel when you get to the end of an episode and they still haven't deployed the mecha? How many times, per show, are you willing to accept Voltron not being formed or the Gundam not launching?
Pic related, I'm on Episode 8 and they've only formed Dai-X once. I guess the fact that the show was originally called X-Bomber and not Dai-X should have tipped me off.

Mecha is hardly in the episode outside of a minute at most (possibly a snippet of a battle or the mecha in the docking bay) with the episode focusing on limited drama/development: exactly once every six episodes.

This may seem like a cop out answer, but it really, really depends on the show.
Gunbuster barely makes an appearance until the fourth episode of the OVA, but the structure of the story and the pacing supports this late appearance and the show is all the stronger for it.
On the other hand, if Dangaioh or Zeorymer (as other 80's OVAs) are so predicated on the cool robot fights, that had they faded an episode it would have been miserable.
Dancougar is a good example of just how far you can push it. It takes a few episodes before all the individual component mecha are introduced. They don't actual transform until episode 10. They don't actually combine until episode 15.
It almost works at first. There is a solid build up, and the anticipation of the next new thing is actually exciting. But it greatly overreaches, and by episode 15 the big payoff is just not enough.

He was awful at it. Hell, ZZ actually reinforced the fact that Bright wasn't shit by having him survive WITHOUT mobile suits against another ship that still had their MS. The fact that he survived was a testament to his skill.
