I plan on reading the Tanakh, Bible and Quran, but I'm pretty sure the jewy stuff was happening at the same time as the greeks so my timeline is already fucked up, and wouldn't reading the Christian stuff and the Roman stuff at the same time be kind of confusing?

I got into trying to do philosophy on my own because I realized I always tend to see both sides of a perspective which results in an inability of deciding on anything. I'm trying to develop a world perspective but I never went to university so I don't know how to approach research from a scholarly perspective.
Any recommendations on books about how to do research? Where do you go for reliable statistics? What are reliable statistics? How do you research other than a simple google search?

I took psych in university. I was basically taught that if something is not a peer approved article published in a scholarly journal, it's worthless.
But then I also took a ton of history courses, and used various academic sources, but often times also used books that I got from my local library.
It all depends on the subject I guess. The worst thing about leaving university was losing access to the schools resources and academic journals.
Use scihub.org to get academic sources that a locked behind university paw walls.

If you are interested in studying philosophy and doing so from a scholarly perspective, 1) go to university, but 2) read secondary resources. These are academic texts and journal articles that you can, by hook or crook, find on the internet for free. There is the stigma in (non-academic) philosophy of avoiding anything but primary texts, but to properly understand any but the simplest primary works you must build up a basis of philosophical knowledge/history and read commentary and interpretation from scholars.

Why can I only enjoy books written (or translated) in my native language?
I've been living in the UK for 15 years now, and I find my self paying twice as much (or more) for imported books.
Does any one else feel this way?

One of the most lucid and well written American authors I've had the pleasure to read, I think her essays showcase the "idiosyncratic objectivity" that'd become a staple of contemporary journalism - her self awareness (like in her Migraine/Anxiety piece) is equally inactual.
>Hunter Thompson
Unduly characterized as a "drugs lmao" hack, his insight on the American Dream in the "year of our lord 1972" is profound and descriptive (in opposition to normative), while also informed by modern philosophy. I'd recommend reading Fear and Trembling before Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His political journalism is equally, if not more, interesting.

While I'm yet to finish Mass and Power, I feel confident in saying that his short form essays are more than worthwhile (and bleakily funny) - ie, his dissertation on Speer's diaries.

You're just like me except you don't have the sense to realize you don't have anything interesting to say.
You should keep at it though, if only for personal purposes. Nobody is a great writer from the first narrative they write. Continue with the introspection, maybe someday you and me both might have the insight or the talent to propel a novel.
